and how does a power ranger fair post patch? will it slowly shift into the meta????

Is it possible? Maybe…but don’t hold your breath.

Power builds are still typically at a disadvantage to condi builds unless they have a lot of inherent defense (warriors and thieves) and since power rangers rely so much on the strengths of the longbow, they aren’t particularly good at keeping a point contested compared to something like a warrior.

But I hope I’m wrong on this…

Before the last patch, I believe Jon said he was trying some methods to fix the 1h sword. No one knows what he did, but apparently it didn’t work.

So, the good news is that the devs still want to fix it, but the bad news is they pretty much don’t know how to pull that off…

With the upcoming trait change …
Signet of the Beastmaster: Removing this trait and it is being replaced by Predator’s Onslaught.

Predator’s Onslaught: Deal 10% additional damage (5% for pet) to foes that are affected by movement-impeding conditions (cripple, chill, immobilize).

… the sword’s cripple could be phenomenal for builds using the new Predator’s Onslaught grandmaster trait.

That sounds great!

…until you consider how it fits in with the current meta build for dungeons:
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Ranger_-_Sword/Warhorn_GS_Build

To reach that trait, you’ll need to drop 2 points either from NM or Skirmishing. Since dropping even 1 point from Skirmishing is a 10% DPS loss, you probably don’t want to do that. If you drop 1 point from NM, you lose 5% DPS and if you drop another, then you drop your power a good bit.

Will 6/5/0/3/0 be better than 4/5/0/5/0? Maybe, but not by much.

…and you’ll still be rooted with your autoattack while using the 1h sword.

Here is a suggestion I could have made but failed to do so….

Spectate.

What I do is spectate, watch a class I am interested in trying a particular build or I am looking for something “different” than what I have played. I switch players, switch matches, servers, etc., til I find something. I check their playstyle. If it is something I think is interesting/good/whatever, I screenshot their traits, their gear choices, their choice in heal, utilities and elite.

Now I may never play it. But I have it all screenshotted in my library O screenshots if I decide to give it a test.

Careful with this one…you can only spectate in Hot Join and the builds/players you find there are somewhat less than reliable. Just be sure to remember that Hot Join is optimal for people learning a class or testing a new build, so don’t expect to get the best example of how a class plays from observing there.

However, watching popular streams/youtube videos can be much more helpful.

There’s no guarantee for what will be good after the next patch since all you’ll find here is a ton of speculation. I mean, before the last balance patch, many people were sure that S/D thieves would be dead…but we all know how that turned out.

To answer your question for right now, though, I would agree with Righteousness that ele is a good choice to fit what you outlined. However, if you had trouble with thief, this may have a harsh learning curve for you.

Bear in mind that any time you switch class, there will be a period where you will be learning and will most likely tank your rating. This will be especially true of eles since there are so many abilities and attunements to juggle.

Personally, I would suggest trying warrior. Partly because it’s so OP, it’s a class that does well in both team fights as well as solo. It’s also relatively mobile and is a lot easier to pick up than ele.

Was this what Arena Net thought would be perfect for veteran players?

Yea…and apparently there are veteran players that agree:

They weren’t kidding that this week would appeal to veterans more. The only downside I see is that now one can’t use a mini a while and then sell it unless one is willing to keep it in inventory, since the bank slot for it will vanish when it’s pulled out. Nor can one trade it back and forth. A minor concern, but now Pamela the Cat (a lesser RP character in my story) will have to find a permanent home for sure

All in all this looks very well thought out.

harharhar got rekt by condi spec when running power…. bet it was a power bunker or less bursty power spec then….

The problem is that conditionspecs can be bunkers and tanky as hell but still do as much dps as a full spec zerker with no survival. It’s simple – it takes one stat to go full out condition and three stats to go power.

Conditions have a wind up, power doesn’t. Power builds always try to kite and outlive condition spec’s, I see it happen all the time. They think if they play defensive and stay at range somehow they’re safe. Power damage is instant, condition damage is over time. Aggressive power spec’d builds will always beat a condition build, but 90% of power spec’d builds are too stupid to be aggressive.

A power build can do this at times…but frequently, a condition build can spam condis, then just play defensive while the dots tick. A power build can push out as much damage as it wants, but it won’t matter if its melting while the condi spammer sits behind gear shield or something like that. The same goes for something like a condi thief that can drop condis, then stealth.

This isn’t to say that fights always play out like that, but it’s a bit more complex than a power build player just needing to go aggressive.

Lol, it’s pretty easy to make a d/p Thief with 3k armor, 2.5k power, and almost 20k HP (assuming full guard leech buffs/blood lust). D/p is just as faceroll as P/d.

Seriously? Who would ever play a tanky D/P…

There’s a huge pack of changes, upgrades, etc. that all benefit current players (even level 80s), who have been playing the game for years with a requirement of nothing more than a single one-time purchase of the game for $60 (if you bought it full price).

With regard to the whole rez/stomp stuff, just remember that you can heal downed allies with Tome of Courage. It’s not as fast as rezzing a downed ally (well, not sure how it compares with healing stats, but with non-healing stats it doesn’t), but you do an AoE heal that can also heal allies rezzing.

Also, I would assume that the stability stays with you if you end your tome early, in which case, you could still get a stab stomp by dropping your tome and stomping. It would come at the cost of the remaining duration of your elite, but is still something that could turn the tide in a fight.

Thieves already have so many ways to secure a stomp that it’s not really worth a GM trait…especially when it’s often better to just let less squishy teammates stomp in team fights anyways. =P

Ranger IS the best ranged damage dealer. The most reliable and tanky? that is another discussion entirely.

read – single target Ranged DPS

If looking at AOE or cleave (pierce/splash) – ele is vastly superior in every way.

In PvE, zerk staff ele is better at single target too…

In PvP-type situations, people will just step out of the Lava Font…but in those situations, AoE tends to be superior to single target dps anyways. =P

I’ll start on a positive note:
gj on winning (or at least surviving) the fights!

But here’s the criticism:
First fight: You’re standing off point the entire time…
Also, why are you using a bear in sPvP? There are many better options
Second fight: You spend almost the entire fight off point, so even though you won the 1v1, you lost control of the point and don’t even get it back when the necro is downed.
…then you went in for a stomp (still off point) when the necro has less than 5% hp left. If an enemy is down like that and far from help, you’ll help your team more by bleeding them out. I.e. keep them at low hp, but don’t finish them. This takes them out of the fight for longer.
Third fight: Much better…but you could have stayed on the point while finishing him. =P
Fourth fight:You just let your ally get stomped! If you would have saved your Point Blank Shot, you probably could have saved them.
…and then you stayed off point the rest of the time while fighting the thief. The whole time you were dancing with him, red team was racking up points. You also went for a stomp on the last enemy when they were practically dead anyways. If they’re low health, just dps them or let the dots/pet finish them off while you move to your next objective.
You did a great job surviving all the enemies, but you didn’t do much to help your team win the game.
Fifth fight: Good job rezzing your ally.

P.s. That sword looks pretty awesome on a Norn…I may consider buying that skin now, lol.

For example, I think we could clean up some of the issues with the Shatterer and just make it a more engaging experience. So rather than spending the entire fight hiding under his right paw he could, say, turn his head and attack that area? :] It doesn’t have to be hard, just a little more involved.

We tried to put in a few changes here and there when we added the new world boss timers. Reactions varied.

But…then I couldn’t afk to grab lunch when fighting him!

Seriously though, I think that’s a fair middle ground. I’m guessing a change like that would make it easier to get the achieve of breaking people out of the crystals since someone might actually get hit by one.

I’m not 100% on the gear (I’ll probably need more knights gear or something with more sustain), but I figure with the changes to longbow and axe, this should give decent ranged damage to help in zergs. At the same time, it should also contribute with spirit rezes in tough spots, AoE poison when attacking, and of course, the water field. The spirit will likely get burnt down fast, but in tough clashes you could still get off some clutch rezes. At the same time, you have the stability from Sig of Wild to get through pushes.

Maybe it’ll still be crap, but I’m looking forward to giving it a shot at least. =P

We could just look at Anet’s vision for rangers…

“Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation.”

Unfortunately none of this is really optimal for a dungeons, although you could argue spirits have their place.

Personally I’ll use any weapon that is most optimal for DPS, but I can understand why some maybe disgruntled by less than optimal performance of other weaponry especially when it’s in the description of the class.

“rangers can adapt to any situation”

Funny how few rangers seem to be able to adapt to melee…

And the description is right. Rangers can bring down foes with their bows. They do have unparalleled damage with their bows. Just because they do more damage with the sword doesn’t mean this is untrue.

Meta Builds Website (sPvP/tPvP)

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

sigh I wanted to stay away form the forum drama but I’m gonna join in on alt acc.

Hi, I’m Hanz from metabattle, one of the PvP moderators. Let me shed some light on some things.

@Olrun – I think we’ve already discussed his issue in-game, but a quick recap: there is a rule about moving builds from Testing – you need a minimum of 5 votes, then there is an unwritten one we aren’t really using anymore, but if a build sits in testing for ~10 days, and gets 3-4 votes we move it based on those votes. I thought Olrun’s case was the second, but turned out to be the 1st – after 5 votes, the build was sitting on 1.2 stars – we move builds to Trash below 3.75, so it was a pretty easy decision. As the number of voters grow, we will keep raising the number of votes a build needs.

Later we’ve discussed about the possibility of bringing back something I believe gwpvx had at some point, the “Workable” category, which is slightly below the “Good”.

@ArrDee – let’s recap your 24 hour long activity on the site:

The good:
- You’ve joined the discussion page for a build, suggesting changes – some valid, some less valid, and we made some changes based on that. Appreciated.
-You’ve uploaded a new engi build – greatly appreciated ^^

The bad:
- After uploading that build, you skipped the Testing and instantly moved it to Meta (not to mention it’s not meta). We refused this kind of special treatment and moved it back to Testing.
- Then you gave the meta build 1 star just because it’s not your build.
- Next thing you did was blanking the page of the build you’ve uploaded leaving nothing there but an external link – this is an act of vandalism, even if it was uploaded by the same person.
- 3rd one (clever move) you blanked the page of the current engi meta build and replaced it with your build, kept the ratings of that page and changed the rating you gave to 5.
- Needless to say, we reverted these acts of vandalism but you kept doing it. At that point we had to set protection for those 2 pages to prevent further harm (which means only mods can edit the page, which is not what the goal of the wiki is) – giving you 1 more chance to stop doing things that may get you banned, I think the other PvP mod even warned you.
- Then you went to the discussion page and began to curse and kittentalk us for doing what moderators do: #moderate.
- This was the point where we banned you, seeing no hope for you to stop.

You also kept demanding credit for the build, and you still do – we go by the gwpvx rules, taking credit for a build on its page is not allowed, and once the build is the part of the site why would we remove it – someone would upload it sooner or later, and you have no legal claims for that – only ArenaNet does. Not to mention you aren’t the only one running this in the entire game. I’ve tried to get in touch with you in-game about these things but you did not respond to me, instead kept being a forum martyr. I’ve mailed you that if you no longer wish to be associated with the site, taking you off the streamer list is all we can do, but again, you did not respond but kept trying to cause harm to the site by spreading false info (earth sigil and other things were changed weeks ago and the shield part on the P/P guide was clearly an accident that was there for like a day). I took it as a “yes” and removed you from the streamer list.

Last but not least: it’s a community project. If you find 1-2 mistakes among the traits/skill/runes/sigils of ~40 Pvp builds, I don’t think that means the entire site is just bad. Do I have to remind you guys that it’s a community project? If you find a mistake, propose changes on the build’s talk page – actually takes less time and is more effective than forum posting about it – and most of the time you don’t even tell what do you find wrong and why, or usually it turns out to be a preference thing that we already covered in the variants section.

Wow…

This why we can’t have nice things!

Props to the people at the wiki handling stuff like this that comes from the community. You have more patience than I do.

In Guild Wars 1, rangers not only had poison arrows, but ignite arrows, and apply poison.

Too bad only rogues are allowed to apply poison in GW2… how i miss GW1 ranger..

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Serpent%27s_Strike

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Stalker%27s_Strike

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Poison_Volley

???

First skill is a sword ability, second skill is dagger, third skill is a 2 sec poison..

???

All 3 are poison skills. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bow skill or not (apply poison could be used with all weapons). And Poison Volley is a 10 second poison without condi duration increases when you use it correctly (at point blank range) and it has a 9 second cooldown without traits. This actually makes it more efficient at applying poison compared to Apply Poison since there is no cast time associated.

But the point is you said only “rogues” (lol) had access to poison, when it’s pretty clear that rangers have tons of access to poison in GW2.

My list didn’t include traps, pet skills, or even the master trait that makes poison more effective.

lol…

Point he was trying to make is that rangers have plenty of poison, much more than a “rogue”. We can keep 100% uptime on poison with one skill if you trait into marksmanship, like 80% uptime if you don’t. Saying rangers can’t poison is pretty false when we probably have the most in game, maybe a necro beats us. Not only that but we have a trait that makes our poisons stronger.

Except by using a “Bow”. Which is why most people picked the class to begin with. (FOTM Meta Sword Rangers dont count). Now this is the part where my opinion is my opinion, but I am a ranger who refuses to pick up a sword because that is not the class that I rolled.

I mean I was a huge fan of HE-MAN, but he was a warrior.. not a ranger..

http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/236x/93/46/4f/93464fd97b8ae2ac060eac718aa3a0e0.jpg

So because you refuse to use better weapons they don’t count? Well if you want to hurt yourself by using only bows then complain about poison, what do you expect? Rangers have plenty of poison, you simply refuse to use it, so instead of wanting more poison on ranged weapons, perhaps you should branch out a bit and play the class to it’s strengths.

Sword is not a better weapon, its barely a rangers weapon. Lore matters, in Guild Wars Lore Rangers used bows. If you prefer other weapons more power to you..

However, I do not choose to accept it and play the class for its so called “strengths”. I will play it as a RANGER and maybe in time it will be fixed. Until then, I intend to use the forums for the purpose they were created. To discuss my concerns, to the community and to the game Developers.

But…it is a better weapon. It provides the highest DPS of all weapons, which puts it at the top for PvE, where DPS is almost everything. In sPvP, it provides a high amount of dodging, particularly when paired with dagger.

There’s a reason why it’s listed in almost every meta build out there.

The mechanics of the auto attack are frustrating as hell, but you can’t argue with the results.

Also, there’s nothing about a “Ranger” that requires the class to be a ranged class. If you need some sources for why this is, I can provide them, but the “range” in the name has nothing to do with shooting arrows.

You’ve been talking about this “tweaked” version of P/P from meta, yet until now have not posted the build for that “tweaked” version.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Show-me-your-Pistol-Pistol-Build/first#post4342743

The build in the video lacks CC and only one way to interrupt that is using Head Shot.

Also using the word “inefficient” without basis is meaningless.

You don’t need CC in PvE.

I made a pointed comment, but I’ll clarify:

Yes, I know Guards have low HP, but necros have 2x high HP, which makes me think that just adding more defense isn’t exactly the best way to solve issues with necro survivability.

I won’t make any claims that they do or don’t have enough ability to survive, but if that’s what they need, it seems to me like they need to solve this issue through A: more control of enemies to keep them from dealing damage or B: more mobility to avoid the damage. I just don’t see making necros giant clothy tanks as a really good idea from a design perspective…

Oh Vincent…If I didn’t know you better, I’d say this was troll bait.

Look, this is going down a very predictable path. You’re pretty sure that you have some super awesome strat behind using a low DPS build that no one else uses, and I don’t see any chance of you being talked out of it.

If there’s still anyone who is wanting to take your build seriously, I’ll leave the links below for them, but I don’t see any good in any more back and forth with you. =P

Jack, you seem to think a lot of this stuff is harder than I do…not sure how to respond to that part of your argument.

Instead of doing a long quote by quote, I’ll just hit on the major points here:

- Yes, I run Shadowstep, Shadow’s Refuge, and Inf Signet. I know Sig of Agi is popular too, but running Shadowstep instead is hardly a hinderance. They both have their own strengths and weaknesses. Look around and I’ll promise you that you’ll find plenty of other high end thieves that run this as well.

- The reason I gave the example of the front-loaded stun chain was 1) because it exemplified the potential and 2) because sometimes locking down a target with that chain is beneficial. Personally, I use this chain when I come to assist a teammate in a fight. This lock down allows the teammate to either recover from damage taken or go fully offensive and down the enemy.

- Yes, you do have to be behind your target to use TS. It’s not a terribly hard thing to do and if you miss/get blinded/blocked, etc. you can just hit the skill again. A blind will stop an engi’s air blast, a ranger’s point blank shot, a guardian’s shield of absorbtion, etc., but when it blinds a thief, you just press the button again until it lands. Oh, and you can do this again as soon as you drop revealed. =P

- Yes, good players can use awareness to counter or predict your moves, but this is true of all builds/specs. See that giant powder keg sitting on the point? Might wanna move! Do you see a jagged white line between you and that engi? Might wanna dodge! Has that Axe/Shield & Longbow war been using his longbow war been using his longbow for about 5 seconds? Better watch for that swap and shield bash!

I could go on…but the point is that there are a lot of classes that have CC which can be countered by smart play. Yes, there are a few CCs that have no tell (Air Blast, Point Blank Shot, Shield of Absorbtion, etc.), but they all have cooldowns and are susceptible to blinds. Not only do thieves have have one as well, but ours goes through stability.

The grass may seem greener on the other side…but take a step back from your own biases and you’ll see what the neighborhood really looks like.

Agreed. I would love to see this…but I could see how this could complicate the queue system.
