Good luck Astral!
Necromancer! No question about it! …just think, I will be a Flesh-carver, a Maker of things… undead chickens that jump and run around like cats without fur!
…and Minions! Who doesn’t want minions, no matter how dumb they are?
I could start my own “Dial – a – Minion” service!
Need something to hold up that broken table for you? Looking for a doorstop? Want to be followed by a crowd that is constantly awe-struck and dumbfounded by your awesomeness? Dial a minion today!
- Conditions do apply.
I just love dungeons. I have never had more fun exploring a dungeon as a hybrid Well’o’mancer. It doesn’t matter if I am running with a PuG, new players, Dungeon Masters or even guildies. Every encounter is different and every person brings something new to the party.
Last night I discovered the ecstasy of Arah! This is what a dungeon is supposed to be! Dawn of the dead styled hordes. Unforgiving. Pushing you to your very limits and beyond. Stopping every couple of minutes to switch utilities, scout ahead, discussing strategies – it really forces a team to become, well, a team!
Discuss:
Time to show your Arah love! Why do you like it? What tips & tricks do you have for new players?
Survivability. That makes a lot of sense. I have used the Fleshworm during my first encounter with Lupi (placing the fellow right up against the wall for the perfect escape) BUT it must have been my bad luck because Lupi kept on smashing my worm to bits. I think it might have been the ranger/warrior that was running into that direction that drew Lupis attention. But alas, a fleshworm makes for a poor shield.
Would you say going POWER against Lupi would be better than going CONDITIONS? The way that I reason it, half of the fight is spending time reviving party members. During such a situation the stacks of bleed/poison will still hurt Lupi, while when I am Power I can hit him hard, but will be useless while I am busy saving the day.
What are your thoughts on this?
Necromancers are perfect at CONTROLLING conditions …and I just love transferring conditions! Something I believe that no other class can do (Only play Necro so I may be wrong ) Hit me with those 25 stacks of bleed and I’ll pass ’em right back to you. Want to poison/bleed/burn me and my party? Let my staff #4 share the love!
…wasn’t there a trait for minions to transfer conditions as well? I cannot remember now.
Anyways, I believe somebody stated earlier that it takes only one person to mess up with his/her condition removal and you have an Epidemic on hand! Don’t even mention Blood is Power!
Necromancers may not be a “fast-hard-hitting” class but we sure are masters at shifting conditions.
:) Interesting topic! Since we (Sylvari) are all connected through the Dream (giving us something of a Hive-mind) would that not mean that instead of being considered offspring, we are rather “extensions” of the community?
Like bees, ants or the Borg! As for the “Father” concept, do we have somebody familiar with how bees and ants reproduce? Could the Sylvari be viewed like that?
Okay, so last night I have discovered the Arah dungeon for the first time. It is an amazingly, overpowered, unforgiving dungeon with no sense of mercy or manners! It is the rude uncle that never gets invited to family gatherings, the love-child of Dawn of the Dead and Jurassic Park!
What makes it even better is “the Great Lupi”! Yes, I spend hours in the dungeon with some PuG’s where a couple of the players ran away in fear and frustration. The only ones remaining, constantly button-mashing and playing? The two Necromancers and the “support” Engineer. (Hats off to the engineer! Never met an Engi that could play the class that well!)
Now, to feed my new addiction – I am curious – how do you fight Lupi? What tactics, skills and elite do you use when you fight him? I’ve been doing the following in the dungeon, and while I pulled my fair share last night I always believe that there is place for improvement. So let’s discuss tactics, shall we?
Phase 1 – “The Grub phase!”
Weapon – Staff! I use the marks + wells to kill of the insects/grubs and range Lupi while we are all stacked together in one spot.
Phase 2 – “Shadow Step!”
Weapon – Scepter (mh) + dagger (oh). Stack bleeds, weakness and poison like crazy. I found out that while Lupi is chasing a team mate like some rabid dog I can get out of combat and change skills. Changed wells to BiP + Locust sigil.
Phase 3 – “Life Leech”
Basically a continuation of phase 2 tactics. Hit and spam conditions as much as possible.
NOTES:
I do keep the locust sigil on for speed, though I feel it isn’t much use during the fight. Perhaps the sigil that lets you revive fallen (downed) allies instantly would be a better trade off?
As for an elite skill I found that Plague is simply useless. Lupi is too fast to keep up with him, which leaves me floating around like a big cloud of dust. Same with Lich Forrm. I simply cannot keep up with Lupi to damage him enough.
At the moment I am using the Sylvari racial elite (turrets) only because I have no idea of what else to try. The turrets have a nice (1200) range but lack in damage. Don’t forget about the 3 seconds of invulnerability which can be a life saver! I assume that Fleshie will simply melt away in front of Lupi?
Anyways, long ramble short – Let’s discuss tactics and ways to fight Lupi!
:D
Some very interesting points! Just to recap – what do we know about the Colossus encountered during the fractal (lore-wise)..?
I think of it as the Necromancer stepping halfway into the Mists, not quite here and not quite there… their physical bodies become immune to harm, but disturbances to this fragile state dissipates the life force required to hold it, eventually pulling the Necromancer back into this plane.
I really do love this description of the Death Shroud mechanic. So I want to ask a question regarding this – say for RP purposes, how would the fact that you gain Life Force through “pain, death and suffering” around your character be tied into this? Would this Life Force be akin to “Mana” or “threads of power” that the necromancer gathers in order to achieve this state of being halfway into the Mists…?
Ah! It looks good! Sylvari is the best-looking race around.
xD …this is PERFECT!
What a wonderful evening!
Did anybody else receive a Fine Transmutation Stone a couple of days ago after completing their daily? I did and it was an awesome reward! Even though i won’t use it now.
Ooh – this sounds like a brilliant plan! An all Necro team! Not sure when I will be online and available to run a dungeon though. If you need one more for any dungeon, simply add me to your contact list and whisper me in-game!
What a great initiative for the Necromancer community!
The Flame & Frost “event/story” takes place in two different maps, although it isn’t really a dynamic event BUT it could possibly be a test to find out if such “cross-map” events could work? Ah, dreams…
I’m the want-to-be hero!
Sorry.
Now I look at their health bar to see if they’re in trouble or not.
I was that “want-to-be” hero last night near the Twilight Arbor! Was so embarrassed when the player told me to please stop killing the mobs of Nightmare Sylvari as he/she was busy doing the daily dodger.
…and if you are on an EU server add me as a friend and I’d be more than happy to show you around! Better yet (selfish promotion here) move to Desolation (the best EU server around!). We’ve got a ton of people running all over and chats are always active.
Simply keep telling people that you are doing your daily dodger and some want-to-be hero won’t accidentally “save” your life from the overpowered Ettins in Queensdale. Perhaps you could start charging “viewing” fees and make some gold while you are “tempting” the terrifying Ettins!
Although, seriously, I prefer running a path in some dungeon or another which involves enough dodging to complete the task. Either that or WvW where it is a breeze to get Daily healer done.
I’ll remember to stay clear from “helping” people in Queensdale.
Wonderful survey! Glad that i could have assisted you in it.
Good luck with your studies!
Farming Groups – – I love it! Now all we need is Orr on steroids! BETTER loot (obviously) and TOUGHER mobs!
…and there are few better ways (except for dungeons and FoTM) for making new friends and allies.
And yes – Ettiquette is extremely important.
Another important tip to remember is this: You have two weapon sets! Make use of them! Don’t go running around with GS only. Switching between weapon sets effectively adds another 5 damage/control/support abilities to your roster.
Great post!
I have found that my Necro is a much-loved addition to our dungeon groups. Even with PUG’s my Necro is more than capable of handling different situations, being an all-round kitten-kicking machine of death!
Need somebody to kite a certain mob (AC Path 1) – sure we Necro’s are capable of doing that! I’ve seen (and done it myself) better than some Guardians. Also, fear (staff #5) is perfect for keeping Hodgins safe.
Massive AOE damage – we can do that with staff (marks) and wells. Traited for it we can be incredibly useful when it comes to healing/shifting conditions (think about how useful a Necro is in a condition-rampant dungeon like TA). You are a lifesaver. Life Transfer in death Shroud etc. shouldn’t be forgotten about!
Scepter/Dagger is perfect for showing any boss that it is wise to fear a well-played Necro.
Sure it takes some time to get used to and you often have to adapt to the different situations (Zergs, Sniping parties, Dungeons, PVP) but it is all part of the class! Playing a Necro successfully is about thinking and planning ahead.
Is the Necro better or worse than other classes in dungeons? I don’t think so. Despite many things being broken with regards to the classes and their relative skills, a well played character can turn around any situation, despite their class. At the end of the day you should rather ask if you are willing to learn all the mechanics of your chosen class (Necro) and then use some imagination to create a play-style that you would find fun to play with, but will also make people shake their heads in amazement and say… “Kitten, those Necros are OP!”
Good luck, have fun and welcome to the Necro class!
My Mini Vampire Bat needs this! Please A-net! It is the perfect companion for my creepy Necro! Now if only I could have a cloud of minis! T_T I could be a.. mini minion master! Ah, the dreams…
^^ Agreed. From level 50 upwards leveling becomes quick, fun and you really get to see your build shine!
Thank you everybody!
Hi everybody!
Thus far I have enjoyed running around with my Sylvari Necro and I’m quickly closing in on reaching level 80. Now I have a question regarding the Elite Plague skill.
As I understand AoE effects only a limit of 5 enemies. Say I am in a dungeon, surrounded by a trash mob, or perhaps caught in a zerg (WvW) – each time I use a skill (2 for blind!) does it affect only the first 5 enemies caught in my plague AoE or does it randomly choose another 5 enemies each time I attack?
Apologies if this is a silly question!
If they even LOOK at changing the Necro’s AOE damage i’m going to straight up kittening murder someone
This. Basically.
As a Necromancer I found myself asking what else I should do. Spreading conditions in group/zerg fights isn’t an option anymore? Does it refer to conditions too? So instead of giving five enemies a stack of five bleedings, it’s just one for everyone of these five?
Agreed. I love my modified Well’o Mancer built. My entire playstyle is built on AoE damage. worried
Hello everybody!
I’ve been playing GW2 for a couple of months now and must admit that I have completely fallen in love with the Necromancer class. I’ve tried some of the “Minionmancer” builds found here in the forums and was happy playing that until I started running fractals. At the moment I am playing a modified “Well’O-Mancer” build and have found that I am a valuable asset to my team when we do Dungeon runs/Fractals. Even in WvW I get a fair share of kills.
The thing is, I want to find out if there are any type of builds for a Necromancer that is primarily focused on support. Perhaps a cleric-type build where the Necromancer is this almost indestructible character that brings a lot of healing and condition removal to the party.
Sure it may not be a conventional look/play-style for a Necromancer, but who better to heal and aid than a character that has an intimate knowledge of Death and its workings?
6 Gods and perhaps 6 Dragons? …is there a link here?
Hello everybody!
Greetings from sunny (and far too warm) South Africa. I am looking for a fun, casual guild to join. At the moment I am playing with a Char Necromancer!
Admittedly, I am new to GW2 so it would be a great help if the guild that I join is friendly and welcoming to new players. later on I’d be interested in WvW and tPvP events! I’m 27, if that helps at all? I suppose an 18+ Guild would be a better option to join.
Anyways, looking forward to hearing from you!
