Phoenix Ascendant [ASH] – Gate of Madness

Earlier today WvW bugged, many of you probably noticed. I went to DH borderlands to actually find myself falling from the sky in someone elses borderlands.
It was Blackgates.
I get on map chat, and there were not only HoD but GoM with me as well.
AND TOGETHER Tier 7 Servers united in killing all of the Krait clearly working for Blackgate. TAKE THAT BLACKGATE! Tier 7 FTW.
Interesting. In vale today we had an Unknown “friendly” who seemed to be able to rez the hostile camp supervisor. The rezzing seemed to be happening too fast to be a stealth rez by a thief. I kept doing death blossoms over the supervisor just in case. We thought it might be a hack, but apparently not.
So… beware of friendlies who can rez hostiles… in addition to Greeks bearing gifts.

Dark Haven has been working super hard to move up a tier! I know im pumped to get a change of scenery. Now that the hard work has paid off im sure dark haven as a whole will be on fire looking to establish itself as a WvW force to be Reckoned with!
It was great fighting Gates and Henge , some good times!
Hyjaxx
Engie Of Grim
I have had fun in this match as well. Never a dull moment in WvW for us these past few weeks. Plenty of good fights, some lost, some won. After all, WvW without fighting is kind of like… crafting. If things go as they seem to be going at the moment, then best of luck and if not I will resharpen the pixels that make up my blades.
Alright. I just have to say that GoM is doing a fine job of defending their keep thus far. We’ve [DH] been attacking it for 4 hours now. In no particular order…
1.) Trebs from Mendon
2.) Rams at Water Gate
3.) Trebs from Anz Hill
4.) Trebs from Island in the Lake
5.) Rams at Front Gate
6.) Catas at West Gate
7.) 15-Golem Rush (this one actually got us to the Lord Room)
8.) Second 10-Golem Rush
9.) More Rams at Water GateClearly, you guys are determined to hold on the keep & Veloka Tower. Nonetheless, we will persevere. Good fight!
Edit: After a final 25-Golem Rush (Of which a few were Omegas), we were finally able to take GoM Keep! Well fought.
P.S. In the time we took to siege GoM Keep, HoD was able to retake their entire side of EB.
Believe it or not, I think you forgot a golem rush. Between the 15 and the 10 I seem to recall an attempt with a single golem to break the damaged gate. There were so many golems in the first rush that they were culling and I thought there were “only” eight. I jumped up on the ramparts to see the 10 golem rush, hit the group a couple of times, but then had to log off to get to work.
Been gone a while… and just stepped in to see what’s it like.
Wv3 is not even worth the bother…. Doubt structured is either.
Gw2 has joined every game in creation… unless you have top gear… you are just fodder for everyone above you.
You’ll get no more badges from me… that’s for darn sure.
Not seeing gear as an issue at all in WvW. I notice very little difference in my effectiveness from level 80s in full exotics down to level 30s in under leveled blues. I (mostly) don’t even bother with jewelry above greens. Do I win 1v1, sometimes, but usually when I lose it is because of a mistake I made and when I win I can usually figure out what my opponent is doing wrong. But then again I am almost never in an even matchup in WvW. Last night I found myself dying quite a bit, but mainly because I was tired and making lots of mistakes.

Hey DH, had soem fun at longview didnt we =D
yes i post alot, this thread needs to be lively! and have many pictures!
I remember that fight. From my point of view it was
balista down/death
catapult down/death
catapult down/death
catapult down/not dead, but one catapult left/
wall down/to the lords room (this will not end well)
fighting/down/rally/fighting/down/rally (this will not end well)
fighting/fighting/fighting/what, I’m not dead?
woot we held
oh man, now we have to repair this wall.
For one week I would like to fight someone other than Darkhaven and Gates of Madness… They have nearly 2x – 3x our population at all times in WvW.
Henge of Denravi is proud of how we fight, but it gets old when the 2 servers always gang kitten our side due to Numbers. Tactics and gameplay can only do so much when you cannot even load all the enemies onto the screen at one time.
Can we please fight a different server for a change?
Thanks…
Edit: Been fighting DH and GOM for about 2 months straight now.
I have heard from HoD posters a number of times that DH and GoM are somehow double teaming HoD. Enough times to convince me that they believe it. But I don’t see it from our side… most of the time we focus on DH. I certainly don’t see GoM and DH coordinating their efforts. There may be small groups that get together and do their own thing, but that can always happen.
It is confusing to me how HoD was able to pull off a victory the first week of the DH/HoD/GoM matchup, but since then doesn’t seem to have the same focus and drive. I’ve played against some tough groups from HoD. Genesis Theory comes to mind, but there are others. It seems to me that you all have the players to compete.
HoD made a strong push on GoM (and apparently not DH) today, so the sever’s will seems to be to stay in T7, while at the same time giving the impression that it doesn’t think it can compete with DH. DH doesn’t seem to be playing to escape from T7, so they are apparently happy here. As far as I can tell, GoM is more or less happy in T7.
So with whom would you like to be matched against if not GoM and DH? The higher tier servers have even greater WvW populations than we do and yet HoD does not seem to want to move down to T8. The question is genuine and is not meant to be insulting in any way.
haha in alot of the pic’s i see my guild GRIM!!
I remember seeing that tag last night in GoM BL. Hadn’t seen it much before though. Good times.
you’re lucky i have to go to work DH and HoD -.-
I logged on to check the score right before DH went to work on Bay. I believe that I was the only person on the map at the time, but had to go to work too. Now that I think about it, I did see swords in the jumping puzzle the other day…
I wasn’t trying to make an alliance with the mods. I was waiting for them to infract me for my post. lol
lol.. im surprised that most post are still here but i thinksome have been removed..
just look at my name pita spoon i have no idea what that means but thats not the name i chose, they chose it for me. all they did was rearrange the letters of my name to get me this one.. first one to guess what my name really was and able to tell me in forum before deletion and i actually see it gets 1g from me.
I’ll go with “Poison Pat”. Or maybe “Pat Poison” is better.
Actually I found last night to be a lot of fun. What started as a long slow siege by DH of bay in our borderlands became quite a bit more interesting when we jumped over to garrison to find, was it 9, HoD golems attacking the water gate. Made me smile. The action kept me up much later than usual. For us it became a target rich environment. Some of the people in GoM BL did seem a bit frustrated, but still I think many, like me, were having a good time.
Actium, I am sorry that your guild members received such whispers. I can only assure you that none of them was whispered by me. My understanding is that such whispering requires a party invite to figure out the players account name. My necro has received party invites from HoD players in the past couple of days, which I have been ignoring. Not quite sure what that is all about, but I obviously read the forums so any comments they might wish me to see can be made here.
As far as the jumping puzzles go, my one experience was that I encountered many DH who were quite gracious and others who were quite aggressive. I suppose I could try to learn the stealth run through the EB jumping puzzle
but at the moment there are other things to keep me busy.
Anyone from DH have an explanation?
Putting aside that holding all of DH accountable for the actions of a few, killing people in a PvP zone is hardly bad form. And it’s hardly worth starting a pointless internet argument over.
From what I have seen all parties have been mostly very courteous over this ridiculously long matchup. The people being discourteous are definately in the minority. So… Kudos to everyone?
Killing in a PvP zone is not the issue. The issue is using a known exploit in order to take a keep that you could not take honestly. If members on your server particpated/know who capped the keep or have any knowledge of it whatsoever and you fail to report them then you are complicit.
Have to agree with Theftwind here. We had a mystery keep loss in our BL today. One minute it was red then without warning green. Had thought it might be something we overlooked, but the silence on the matter in the forums is… curious.
Reputation does matter when one hears complaints on the forums. For example, things like
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/13skqn/darkhaven_us_on_notice/
make me less sympathetic regarding jumping puzzle issues.
The mystery loss of west keep in GoM around 5 eastern was 2 [PD], one thief that evaded you guys in the inner, and me, dead on the floor who was revived. No foul play, I promise. Like others have said, I hope you don’t lump all of DH in as cheaters. We don’t condone it under any circumstances, it ruins everyone’s experience.
Well played. It seems we do need to work more on sweeping.

I know that map and team chat can get a little cluttered, but didn’t think that it was to the point of requiring some form of suppression.
I know that some suspect that inter-server spying is fairly common. Moving tactical and strategic discussions from map wide to more local channels (e.g. say and squad) should make such spying more difficult. If Arenanet wanted to increase awareness of the squad mechanic, I suppose they could make one of the daily events entering WvW and joining a squad…
Regarding jumping puzzle antics, there is an interesting comment made on the Chronicles of Tyria podcast, ep 32:
http://www.cotpodcast.com/2013/01/26/cotpodcast-32-tad-on-cot/
The comment is made by a Darkhaven player/podcaster, comes at 13:20 and points out that “Darkhaven is pretty well known for camping the jumping puzzle in Eternal Battlegrounds.”

loving the blood bath in DH BL. really good fights. You guys really like sunnyhill, nice vacation spot im sure =D
First time I’ve seen myself in a screen shot, so thanks Sororita! These fights were great! Funniest moment for me was getting scorpion wired by a DH thief in Sunnyvale and flying up above the vista there. At least I think that is what happened.
One of the problems the ratings now face is that the rapid rise of servers (for example, Kaineng) has extracted points from the lower tiers and transferred them to the upper ones. Now a dominant performance in one of the point depleted lower tiers will not garner enough points to move the server up. ANet’s attempt at resetting everyone to the same level was clearly going to lead to problems, but having the rankings stagnate is a problem as well. I would think that ANet could come up with a graded approach with resetting rankings such as resetting T1 to 1750, T8 to 1250 and adjusting the intermediate tiers in a corresponding fashion. This would recognize the past efforts of the higher tiers while making the ratings more dynamic.
I suppose this is all fairly obvious and I apologize to those who may have suggested a similar approach in the past. The numbers I used were purely for examples and better values could probably be arrived at by looking at the past history of the rankings.
Don’t think artificer potions do much good in WvW. Arenanet should add a Potion of Troll Slaying giving +10% dmg to spawn campers and such.
GoM and HoD for lyfe <3
Wow, great screenshot of your spy whispering our team chat to you.
Reminds me of an incident last week. DH had “our” keep in EB and we trying to take down an inner wall without being noticed. I think we kept orange swords off the map until the wall was almost down. I was calling out damage on the wall in chat to get our timing right. And just as the wall comes down, an HoD zerg comes in and takes the keep. Their perfect timing did make me a bit paranoid about what I was saying in chat.
To clarify: if you and others are doubting our commanders then the opposing commanders have succeeded. If you have not already read it, I recommend “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu. Surprising how much applies to WvW.
This is correct, although a commander needs to actually win peoples’ loyalty first. It can be a bit of a catch 22.
Exactly, and Sun Tzu knew that:
“A leader leads by example not by force.”
So what example would you have a commander set? Your bad experience with some commander or commanders does not match mine. You seem to have had some positive experiences with commanderless groups, again haven’t experienced that in EB (I have in the BL maps). If you have a great idea of how to get things done, map and team chat are yours. Convince people your plan will work, recruit them to your cause and lead them to victory.
(but at least you didn’t go to Kaineng!)
The Kaineng matchup forum threads are pretty fun to read. You should scoot over to them to see the latest thing that WM pulled… against Kaineng.
Since server scores reset next week, I think Kaineng wants to land in a tier that they believe they can dominate next week. This would insure a larger jump the following week. That may be why WM is backing off. Speculation of course, but I doubt WM is going to make their intentions public.
@Tekyn: I always remind myself that the opposing commanders are doing their best to diminish our morale.
I’m not sure what that meant, but if you’re implying that I am an enemy commander then I can assure you I am not.

Don’t get me wrong I think a GoM alliance is a good idea, but after almost five months of WvW I am convinced now more than ever that commanders do more harm than good. If in the end the alliance is just a small group of hardcore jerks barking orders then the server will suffer and people will leave.
Just my two cents.
now i cant say anything on the matter of commanders before 3 weeks ago (when i started playing) but the commanders ive seen in the past few weeks have been excellent, organized us and have done it all in a fair and fun manner. sorry to hear thats how you’ve experienced it.
+1 to this. I would follow any of the commanders on Gates. It can sometimes take a bit to figure out what they are trying to accomplish and each has his or her own style. So I try to follow as best I can and try to figure out how to contribute most effectively. @Tekyn: I always remind myself that the opposing commanders are doing their best to diminish our morale.
Speaking only of EB now, I have never found a commanderless group accomplishing anything particularly useful.
GoM has given up on WvW a long time ago.
Speak for yourself.
No after participating a little today, i pretty much speak for everyone.
No you don’t. There is always fun to be had. After farming the DH spawn campers for about half an hour (thanks for the loot guys), we went to visit DH’s keep in EB.
Pathetic on numerous accounts.
First saw DH doing this, then HoD (long before this post). There are such points on both sides of the BL maps. Not much different than standing in the spawn. In fact I guess it is standing in the spawn. Never used one myself. It doesn’t seem to affect the balance of the game, so I don’t think of it as an exploit.
Just listened to the initial developer session where the topic of this thread was first mentioned. The only specific problem I recall being discussed is that players were getting through some dungeon encounters by spamming AoEs. The fellow charged with discussing changes to WvW was not the one who brought the AoE issue up. If players can avoid red circles, the AI should be able to as well.
This has been a fun week. Kudos to our commanders and to DH and HoD for giving us some fun battles. Even talked one of my PvP hating guildies to join in the fray and I think she had a good time.

Hey FoS, AKA Fringe Of Sanity, check your mesmers…a female norn or tall female human, to be exact
Just now a mesmer ported in some GoM players into Craigtop Tower at GoM BL.
The thing is, no wall or gate was down, was a breakout event.
I set up some good defensive seige, and Im glad I had a chance to use it, but I am disappointed that GoM took the tower this way.
Here’s a picture of the gate/wall still up with GoM attacking on the outside with some GoM capping on the inside.
This caught my attention since I was playing on my female norn mesmer last night. This was not me however. When I first saw Sunnyvale and Cragtop with their open faces to the cliff, it just screamed out to be one of those walking on air puzzles like that one vista in Malchor’s Leap. Similarly getting to the Garrison wall from the spawn looks like a jumping type puzzle too. Given the GoM PvEer’s in WvW to do the jumping puzzle, I wouldn’t be surprised if they put their talents to other uses. And jumping puzzles are part of the game. Do I know if that is the case, no, but if ANet has made jumping puzzle skills an effective tactic in WvW, that is beyond awesome.
That said, when word of this reached the commanders, they clearly stated in map chat that breaking the rules was not to be tolerated and there was no indication that anyone on was upset enough to do something problematic. I, like many others, still had a great time in WvW last night and in fact all week. Thanks to Kaineng for the excitement, badges and loot. And yes I provided quite a bit to you all, at least the badges and loot part.
This is the first week I’ve spent any significant time in WvW and, even though we seem to be getting rolled by Kainang, I am still having a great time. I have to admire Kainang’s coordination and rapid response.
I think many of the PvE’ers out there would be interested in how easy it is to finish off the Monthly WvW achievement this week. I finished off mine (first time completion) in a couple of hours. It is very easy to find red players who have no fear of dying. Yeah, I’ve helped plenty of Kainang players finish off their monthly’s too, but have managed to not spend too much on repairs.
I can see why many of the normal GoM WvW crowd is a bit down, but for those looking for badges, kills and loot it is a good week… to die.
