Well the BS thieves running that very specific setup can cause huge damage which is why there are incessant threads about it in WvW which is what I primarily play GW2 for. Plus the rendering issue is indeed an issue that causes this mechanic to become a bit crazy. However I’ve seen ranged classes take me down alot of health from range. Warriors hit me for 20k when I’m not looking with 100b, its all swings and roundabouts. I’ve also simply given up on trying to kill some guardians altogether. Fact is I like running S/P atm with my SB I just like it that way with all the movement and I don’t die very often to anyone including D/D thieves because I spec for evasion. I’m sure there’s a counter to most things, you come across players from all different classes that know what to do and are well tough and some who go down like a sack o’ spuds. So as a Thief I can see why people think BS is OP, but I don’t think it is once that thief is avoided he’s burned those abilities that make BS so effective. So it’s a bit of a one trick pony effect. At least in GW2 unlike other games you can dodge, and avoid.

Also played Smuggler in SWTOR must note. I’ve played a few games with other classes OP. Now whether the thief is or is not (IMO other thieves kill me, but rarely, therefore I think they are not) there’s just this thing about thieves that make groups chase you all over the map, and I love it. We do have awesome escape skills tho, has to be said. If you spec for that. In great guilds I have found myself as the only thief type player in a pool of very experienced MMO players. Wierd.

Am I playing Thief wrong?

Mostly the comments are about PvP and WvW my friend. PvE can be pretty easy so tactics there aren’t really discussed much. In PvP and WvW players get killed by thieves and get emotional about it hence all the threads of thief OP! I’m sure if mobs could post they’d be calling you OP

Since P&P AD&D – yeah kids- whats that? I’ve always played Thief/Swashbuckler types just so happens these for me are the most fun in mmos too. Played Witch Hunter in Warhammer. Fast play style movement being a big key, surprise and thinking about your surroundings, well paced and fun. I think I’d find some other classes a bit dull. Insta-gank isn’t really fun for me but springing in from nowhere to save/help escape an outnumbered team mate and especially killing an enemy right in front of their team mates eyes and getting away makes me all fuzzy and warm.

I’ve experienced over 10k backstab in WvW by a thief and i’m a thief. I can understand people going for backstab and hs they’re easy and do high damage. Too easy for me and lacking utility, however it is correct that the options appear quite limited; Pistol Whip is pretty hard to pull off and the animation root is counter intuitive to the classes mechanics. None the less my quest for non D/D play continues. I wouldn’t be upset with any backstab nerf,a s I generally don’t use it. However my damage is reduced quite noticably into the lesser and much slower category. So are thieves feeling they’re being pushed into using that strategy?

Bah this demn backstabbie, yet again..Yes as a thief I agree with theguy. I haven’t settled on a build/playstyle but like a different approach and I can see the D/D combos are the most easy and damaging. So why not play it? That’s what alot of players want awesome 3 second kills, isn’t that cute? For me it does very little to help WvW which I play. All said and done I contribute alot more to WvW with my bow, my movement , and my awesome timely resses on downed players. I equip the tools to survive these other pesky thieves and can go in melee to take opportune targets. I really can understand why D/D is so popular, it is kinda OP and I do no where near the 22K in about 3 seconds I’ve seen a thief do on me (although he 10 mins later to me). But its a one trick wonder thing, co-ordinated teams don;t really have so much to fear. When teams get co-ordinated and WvW comes along with large scale fights it really doesn’t make such an impact.

People get frustrated and there’s where the complaints begin. As a WvWvW player and a thief (only 71) I’ve got to say I see many players simply dying easily and not exactly being examples of attention or awareness or range. This means they go down easy and think its because of imbalance. I don’t die very often because I’m always moving and always equipping abilities to get me out of trouble, I find not dying fun, and I always play thief classes because I like strategic movement being part of the game. Maybe some thing standing still and smacking each other over the head like a Choppa in War is the way some think it should be done. Having said that I got repeatedly killed last night by a warrior spamming whatever root, haste and thousand blades.. 20K in 1.5 seconds. I was a bit on the slow side last night, was probably the beer, but I’m not going to complain on the warriors forums. I get hit hard by other classes I just know my reactions and how I approach them has to better. Its why the game is an enjoyable challenge. I do not want easy mode. May complainers do and should consider a simpler and more easily paced game.

How do you stop perma stealth Thieves?

yes rendering is a problem, I got killed by a thief I never saw once and I’m a thief. This is a problem not only for thieves that can take advantage but for the simple playability of other players I know when the zerg comes.

It has its uses thats for sure, but grossly overpowered I think is being mistaken for working against those who do not know how to deal with it. It is a non targettable skill I don’t use very often.
