I’d like to have shorter Blink CD’s, but 3-9% reduced damage OVERALL, in a “Tanky” build, is far too good to give up I think… With dual swords I have SO many ways to spawn illusions, not to mention dodge rolls, that I’d almost always have clones up to benefit.
I won’t go into great detail as it’s pretty obvious it’s a shatter build that can take a hit, and I want to be Dual Swords majority of time. GS swap is for range stuff, but might even use Staff swap for Chaos Armor – which is super useful as a combo field and melee.
Because I’d be melee most of time as Sword/Sword I think Illusionary Persona is mandatory. Such a huge DPS and survival increase (not to mention an extra 5s of retaliation on Cry Shatter).
The last “filler” points were the 10 in Power for 20% Mind Wrack damage. I had thought about them elsewhere but, for a melee tank shatter build it seems the best option.
Thoughts?

….. to reroll as an Elementalist or Engineer because then you WON’T weapon swap. That is the only way to effectively do it…..
Weapon Swapping is the same mechanic as Attunement Swapping, and you do it twice as much on an Ele so…
Troll of the day.
Mesmer is an excellent solo class. We don’t necessarily kill things as fast as other professions, but I have, on numerous occasions, solo’d veterans and even champions under the right circumstances – sometimes even in MF Gear.
The thing to note however is: Mesmer doesn’t truly shine until about 40+ when you’ve got some traits and abilities. We are a very slow starting class. Stick to it though, and the reward is great.
Definitely depends on spec, but our AoE leaves a lot to be desired in most cases. Our single target is more dependent on what weapon set and build you use. Nothing super important has changed though with the class, a few cooldown differences and such.
Limited combo fields aren’t a huge deal. And besides, the ones we do have are awesome (almost all ethereal fields, granting Chaos Armor). There’s more than you think though if you use the right slot skills.
Mesmers are decently in demand. Nobody will turn you away that’s for sure. They just might not be looking directly for you. I’ve solo’d the last half of many EXP mode bosses because the rest of my party wiped though. While they shout “Just die so we can reset”, I just end up soloing and winning lol.
Mesmer is, in my opinion, one of the most challenging and fun classes. The payoff is sometimes way better than some, and sometimes worse. You probably won’t be standing auto attacking like a Guardian/Warrior does, but you also won’t be skill spamming quite like an Elementalist all the time. The decision is up to you, but I just leveled an Ele to 80, and a few days later jumped back to my Mesmer with over 500 hours.

Just bumping this thread because I have been looking for a sort of “Hybrid” power/something GS build, and I think I am going to try something similar to this suicide/shatter build.
I like sitting back in big fights and spawning clones, and occasionally when the time seems right toss a shatter out, and get clones back up. As they die they are relatively easy to replace with a 6s Mirror Blade, plus I’d roll Mirror Images, Dodge clones, etc. I think I’d have good enough clone generation for shattering AND suiciding.
Maybe something like:
I’ve got huge attack/power, so my GS abilities would still hit hard. A great crit % for some bleeds from clones. Cripple when they die (and they will…), and random condition on death. Great mobility for a mesmer at least, and… yeah.
I know what you’re thinking “But there’s no condition damage!”, but the only thing that would benefit from Condition damage is Bleeds. Otherwise it’s just cripple, vulnerability and weakness, which do not use condition damage. I’d rather hit hard myself, than up my bleed damage by 50/tic. The bleeds are more just additional damage on top of my own, and the clone suicide mechanic is for kiting/debuffing, imo.
What you guys think??
I had thought about compromising and just using a Staff/Sword+Focus, but last night I did some dungeons in crappy gear with an odd spec, and just can’t kick the GS playstyle. I do understand that we suck at hybrids though, so perhaps I’ll lean towards Power more. I just don’t like being all power focused.
I’ll have a look at a 30/0/20/0/20 build with GS/Staff maybe. Or even GS/Sword-focus?
A mix of Rampager/Carrion/Rabid is what I presume I would use. I can afford to be a bit squishy because I’ll have a lot of good “getaways” to stay alive with abilities anyways I think.
Interesting – will have to play with Scepter a bit, never used it much tbh. I liked the Sword MH swap so I could combo for Chaos armor with Leap, as well as the 2s Distortion obviously but… I guess both weapons are situational.
Thanks a lot for the feedback – sorry for being stubborn Appreciate it.
Cheers,
Well for the time being it’s more of a Gear Availability thing to be honest… but also just preference of not swapping gear all the time.
If I were to compromise and use Staff + Sword/Focus, would the Rabid set I initially had listed be the best Glamour gear setup?
So this:
(edited by Eucalyptus.9784)
Alright what if I swapped all my gear for Carrion stuff and just rocked Power/Cond/Vit gear, to help balance my “Hybrid” style of GS + Condition?
I know it’s somewhat gimping myself still, but I’m not trying to min-max necessarily, I’m about having fun while still being useful. I think a Glamour build with Staff definitely has a lot of use, although I see the benefit of a focus too. The severe lack of mobility will probably get to me anyways.
My survival would be very good still with Null field + remove a condition on heal, Chaos armor, a knockback and a ton of clone generation + port (Staff 2), and just general Good mesmer play knowledge…
Thoughts on this?
Edit: There has to be an effective GS/Staff build …
I think I’m going to try rolling something like this:
As sort of a hybrid Glamour/tolerable PvE build. I’d probably be switching between GS/Staff as the situation needed, but in WvW the main focus would be GS + Glamour, and in PvE perhaps a more supportive Confusion/Staff role, as the Condition Damage would work well with Staff auto attack.
PvE is easy anyways….
Gear is Full Rabid with Nightmare Runes, and Full Rabid with Emeralds.
Stats sit at:
40% Crit
1156 Condition Damage
30% Condition duration (+33% confusion)
17k HP
2.4k Armor
Plus the Glamours have reduced cooldowns and last longer.
Looks pretty decent on paper to me. As amazing as any Glamour build for WvW, and not too shabby if played with a Staff for PvE.
Hey guys,
So I’m looking at trying to put together a GS main weapon Glamour build and am curious about itemization and stats. Now, obviously I want something with a ton of Condition damage since my main source of damage will be Glamour Confusion. I’m not going to have 20 points in Dueling, since I’m going 20/0/0/20/30, so Crit seems kind of worthless since I won’t be stacking bleeds….
So would I skip Precision then too, or does it have an other use, besides my own crits? I’d like to build myself to mostly WvW obviously, being a Glamour build and all, but I also want to be able to hopefully dungeon sometimes with this build. Which is where it gets tricky since I know Confusion ain’t great in PvE. Hence, wanting to have a bit of self burst still.
Should I focus Power/Condition Damage?
I really like this build still. Am rocking 0/20/0/20/30 right now on my Mes, and I’ve played everything and anything as a Mesmer before. This suits my playstyle the best.
I wear all Knight’s gear, with Centaur runes, and all Knights (stats at least) trinkets, with Ruby Orbs (Zerker) bonuses. Gives me about 46% crit chance, 17k hp, 2500 armor and almost 50% crit dmg. Zerker weapons.
A very well balanced, decent DPS tank/shatter build that works good in both WvW and PvE dungeons. A few skills are swappable per situation in the trait lines too.
So the other thing I guess is: When I’m in WvW and am being shot from a wall and cast my Focus Phantasm… he’s going to spawn right beside them. Will it work like a reflect similar to Feedback then, or is it only a “reflects things coming towards me”, and not a “reflects things back like a bubble surrounding them” type thing?
If that makes sense. Basically trying to figure out if the Trait is useful at all, if not just for the 20% reduction in Swiftness use.
Just curious how the trait that makes our Focus Wall reflect projectiles works? (Warden’s Feedback). Or does it only make the Phantasm that spawns from Focus reflect?
Basically: Does anything that would go “through” the wall reflect back at the Ranged attacker? Is there a height limit? (ie. WvW being attacked from a wall)
Longbow?…. LongNO.
On second thought: This build is pretty much exactly what I’m looking for.

Hey guys,
So I see these threads all the time and people typically just link to the “Build Guides” thread. I’m looking for some specific feedback on this one though, not to just browse through guides.
I have over 500 hours on my Mesmer. A while back I got sort of bored with it, so rolled an Elementalist. I recently hit 80 on my Ele, and in typical Eucalyptus fashion, thought “Hey, maybe my Mesmer would be fun again?”. So with that, I’m trying to find a way to play it that’s fun, after coming from the quick paced Elementalist.
I like Greatsword. I’ll start there. I don’t however like standing and auto-attacking. Which to me, seems sort of counter intuitive to using the Greatsword. I don’t really have a preference for a weapon swap, but typically like either Staff or Sword/X.
What I’m looking for is a good solid Hybrid build, that does good burst damage for PvE/WvW/Dungeons. I don’t care, literally at all, about sPvP. I want to be able to run dungeons, of relatively high difficulty, and also roam (usually with a fairly large group) in WvW and feel useful in terms of AoE damage still.
I can’t really decide whether I like Crit/Bleed, or Condition (confusion) better, but I know that Confusion is pretty meh for PvE, so am probably leaning towards a Zerker type build.
Having not played my Mes for a few months – any builds that reflect my playstyle and can keep me moving/doing things? What are the mandatory traits and how would you gear for something like this? (Rabid?)
Cheers.

Wanted to bump this briefly and see if there were any other players that roll a Staff as a more DPS oriented build, and what they’re Trait setup was?
I was playing with 0/25/0/25/20 last night for a bit in Berserker gear. Seems good, but curious what else is out there.
Interesting build Defora… Now that I think about it, with most of the staff attacks being AoE, having a super high Crit percent/dmg might be a lot more beneficial than just straight Power. Especially because, as you mention, the Fire line kind of restricts you to that attunement alone.
I’ll have to have a look at gearing options, etc. I don’t like running with anything less than 17k hp.

30/0/0/20/20 Staff with Power/Prec/Vit.
(have to copy paste link, not click)
Link is copy pasted from Address bar. Still shows it as bad for some reason.
Evasive Arcana isn’t that great for Staff usually, because you don’t want to be in the middle of things as a Staff user typically. Especially when I’m building more DPS geared than P/V/T gear.
As for Sigil, I would use either Battle or the +10 power per kill one.
The 5 points in Arcane Precision is kind of just filler, because I don’t know where else I would put it. Maybe Water? To make it 30/0/0/20/20 with Vital Striking or Aquamancer’s Alacrity…
Link says it’s a Bad one… but it’s:
30 – V, VI, XII
0
0
15 – V
25 – V, VIII
Power/Precision/Vitality Gear.
2 monk, 2 water, 2 strength runes.
Glyph of Storms (mostly for WvW), Arcane Wave (for Blast finisher), and Mist Form.
Thoughts?
I wanted to know what people thought about this 30/0/0/15/25 build with Power/Prec/Vit that I had come up with.
I’m playing a 0/10/0/30/30 right now, and because I stay almost entirely in Staff no matter what I’m doing, wanted to try and tweak my build a bit better. I like being supportive, hence the few traits in Water, but ultimately wanted to be a bit more offensive while still being able to survive in dungeons/WvW.
The Might stacking seems like it would be crazy good for DPS, especially considering the already 3000 Attack.
Thoughts?

Nevermind. Didn’t realize Cone of Cold also healed me.
Let me put it this way then: Are there any skills that you find yourself not using ever, or not often at all, simply because others (attunements) are off CD instead?
Thanks guys, great responses!
Am I mostly correct when assuming that I won’t use Drake’s Breath and Cone of Cold very often, if ever? Seems like I just have too much “stance dancing” to do with D/D and they aren’t that great. Same goes for the Air #2, can’t remember name. Ever useful?
Still trying to get the hang of a “rotation” of sorts, or rather what combos with what.
(edited by Eucalyptus.9784)
Hey guys,
So I’m relatively new to Elementalist (35 right now), but have over 500 hours on my Mesmer, so know the game well and a fair bit about the class. It’s my understanding that one of the better PvE/WvW builds for Ele’s was a “boon build”. I’ve done a bit of research and can’t seem to find a solid foundation of what exactly makes a “boon build”, well, a boon build. Something to do with boons, obviously, but can anyone link me the standard starting point of one? Please include gear choices in your builds or ideas as well. I’ve heard about a 10/10/10/10/30 build that I liked the sound of, but I think it’s long since nerfed?
Also, while I do like D/D, I also really like my Staff for groups and WvW. Is there a version of the Boon build, or rather, any build, that proves good DPS + minor support/boons and works for both weapons? I don’t mind carrying around weapon sets, but I don’t like the idea of swapping talents every time I want to WvW, Dungeon, etc.
Please note: I have absolutely zero interest in sPvP, so let’s pretend it doesn’t exist when thinking of what I am trying to achieve.
TL;DR – Link/explain to me a “boon build”, or build that works well with D/D and Staff both in PvE + WvW, focusing on DPS and minor support/survival(boons).
Cheers,
