Any update on the fix for Mac users.. its not like this is a cosmetic issue or some other trivial problem for us.. as it stands now i’ve stopped playing completely since the break in the mac client is so horrible its not even worth playing as low FPS (2 – 4 fps) induces migraines.

I was really hoping they would have this fix out for the weekend. It’s sad that we have to wait another 4 days before it’s even possible to get the update.

As do I .. and yes I wholly agree its going to take 4 days {thats almost an insult really}

The other thing to note here is Transgaming/CIDER is somewhat dependant on the work of the open source WINE team’s work (CIDER is a commercially forked version that Transgaming has enhanced and tweaked) .. also the licensing deal that transgaming has with game companies is interesting in that (if I recall correctly) they don’t take an upfront fee but instead get a cut of all product sales. {you can go google for it to read the particulars as I recall its a little different than what you would expect} .. so there are various technical and legal complications to being able to bring a “pure 64bit” CIDER wrapper if it was even possible (which I don’t think would really help in this specific situation).. CIDER/WINE is a clean-room reversed engineered implementation of the MS Windows API calls .. many of which are not documented/buggy so it takes time to reverse engineer them and have them work as expected (yes even the buggy api’s have to be reimplemented in CIDER/WINE with the bugs working the same way as native windows) .. and Microsoft certainly is not going to provide that information.

Yes this issue has nothing to do with lag / networking latency .. its all about the speed which graphics are rendered on your screen ..

I think a lot of the problems we are seeing today could have been avoided if they had provided the Mac playerbase with a mac test client for the “edge of the mists” patch ..

Honestly I was able to scrap one together myself just so I could see the mists content and play some test with my guildies (but work and life issues cropped up preventing me from using it beyond a quick run around when no one was on so the FPS issues didn’t present themselves unfortunately) ..

Having said that and having made a test client own my own by myself for the EOM beta wasn’t terribly hard and it could have easily been done by aNet — IF — they had opted to do so.. So I am still pondering why they didn’t .. (I just copied the existing gw2 application , opened the package contents, changed a few options inside to prevent auto updating, and replaced the gw2.exe with the eom.exe test binary —really not rocket science here)

Thank you Gaile for responding .. !!

As others have pointed out .. we mac users have too often seen official posts about various things .. and never any sort of follow up or the person ever to be heard from again.. Many of us having had to deal with that (and as mac users with other MMORPGs/games that treated us the same way) you can understand how we feel when the bug is as serious as this specific one is crops up and things go silent. As I mentioned before even a periodic “hey guys we are still working on a fix” goes a long way.

I’m not sure it’s just a mac client problem,

Well since both Windows and Mac’s use the exact same binary .. i wouldn’t be surprised at all if its impacting windows users too they just might not notice it as much since they dont have the additional CPU overhead mac users have with the CIDER wrapper.

Please keep adding comments to these threads to keep them on the top of the active threads list.. I think its unfortunately the only way to get their attention. Or at least to get somekind of status update on this issue.

We already have their attention and a status report. They aren’t going to suddenly forget about it just because the thread isn’t at the top anymore. It’s time to be patient. Problems like this aren’t fixed in a day.

I think at least a weekly update is fair .. and thats what I am looking for .. and so far we only got one update so far and nothing further… even a “hey guys we are still working on it and …. nothing new” would be fair and sufficient. Fwiw i’ve been in the software industry myself for over 25 years and I am fully aware that issues like this are not solved in a day but also on the other hand if things aren’t kept in a priory list they tend to get pushed down the list for other issues that crop up afterwards. This issue isnt some trivial cosmetic my weapon skin looks funny issue .. its a real problem thats impacting a great many users at a core functionality level. So I think some sort of periodic status update isn’t unreasonable.

Well I don’t have bootcamp on this new iMac and I have no means to install it since I no longer have my old iMac .. so I am locked-in to OSX only for GW2.. (also have no desire to install bootcamp either)

I can sympathise with your lack of desire to install BootCamp, but you shouldn’t need anything (except Win7 install data) for a BootCamp installation. You can always install it on a new Mac without the need of any other machine.

The point is I really dont want to have to reboot my mac just to play a game .. I did that for many years with DAOC and Warhammer Online and the early GW2 betas .. so I am sorta “done” with doing that.. and I think many other mac users feel the same way. I don’t even have the Win7 discs (and for that matter this iMac doesn’t even have a DVD drive).. I think I might still have Win98 installers somewhere but thats not supported with the current versions of bootcamp.

So, just an update. I switched over to boot camp and the improvement was ridiculous! I now run a minimum of 20FPS on ultra settings in full wvw zergs. Sucks that I cant run this in my preferred OS but with this improvement I can’t go back.

Bootcamp/native windows will always be faster and with more eyecandy since running the game doesnt incur the significant overhead translating directX calls to openGL calls ..

The current performance issue reminds me of the efforts before they released an “official” mac client when people tried to wrap the windows exe with wineskin (which is very nearly identical to how it works with the official version {the mac client is just a CIDER wrapped windows exe – the same one the people on windows use}) they hit a similar issue during the beta when aNet enabled multi threaded DirectX .. at the time there was a command line switch to go back to single threaded use but anet have long since removed that option.

(note this command line option is no longer enabled in the gw2.exe client)

-dx9single
Enabled the Direct3D 9c renderer in single-threaded mode. Solves issues with running in Wine, but may be slower.

iStat menus is pretty much the standard for keeping track of fan speed, temperature etc…

I really am curious as to what is cause the huge slowdown for us. I expect anet to tell us between 2 months from now to never.

I run istats .. ill have to look but I am guessing its probably pure CPU .. since the cider wrapper that runs the windows gw2.exe on macs is very cpu intensive .. which adds additional overhead to mac players that windows players do not incur.

How about dropping that res from 2560×1440 down to 1080p or 1600×900 to see if that helps?

It played perfectly fine before the last patch.. and I was getting great frame rates at that same rez with way more stuff turned up and not off/low/none .. (that rez is my native display resolution btw)

I could try as an experiment but the problem is without a doubt something they did to the graphics rendering engine..

My preference isn’t to band-aid the issue but have aNet fix it properly.

Everyone, try deleting your “~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2” directory. It will be recreated next time you launch the client.

Support told me to try that and it appears to have helped. I’m in EotM right now getting up to 50-75 FPS again on my normal settings. It is dipping down to 10-20 with a lot of people around but it is actually playable now.

Tried that, but it is not fixed unfortunately.

Did not help me either

No surprised.. What they are telling you to do are generic fix it stuff .. not steps to specifically address this issue .. since the problem is the patch ..

Anet should really fix this issue .. granted .. yes running GW2 under windows / bootcamp will give you the best performance with all the eyecandy on maximum .. but some of us would rather trade in the eye candy for the convenience of not having to reboot our machines to play.

Were there any optimizations for AMD CPUs?

Theoretically everyone should see an improvement.

Except people running the OSX client who seem to be reporting drastic decreases in FPS to almost unplayable levels on decent spec machines.
(I’d appreciate not being told to write this in the OSX Support thread because it does not have any sort of dev presence in it so I may as well be talking to a brick wall.)

On a more positive note – I do seem to have slightly better performance in Windows after the update, especially in Orr where I used to see a noticeable drop in performance.

Try the auto-detect settings and then remove anti-aliasing.

Tried that .. no change still very poor FPS .. and additionally .. dropping everything else to OFF/LOW/NONE barely improved the FPS .. it went from 2 – 3 FPS to 5 – 6 FPS .. WvW remained an unplayable slide-show.
