I had a theif use their venom the one that immobilizes foes for two hits. While I used the following ranger utility stun breaker skills zephyrs speed, protect me, and lightning reflexes and found that I remained immobilized despite the fact that these skills are meant to be stun breakers. I will just like to confirm if anyone else found that these utility skills for the ranger fail to actually break stuns in spvp? I only tested this in spvp so I do not know if this applies in wvw as well.

Well i like theives, and i like the stealth feature when i see a theif i tend to try and go for them first. In 1 vs 1 fighting a theif is quite enjoyable can be challenging against sword/dagger theives. However, as theives I will pose a scenario that should be very familiar to you all: When an enemy zerg shows up the theif stealths and by the time you see where they are,you notice that the theif used infiltrators arrow and is out of harms way from the zerg. However, as a ranger for example, I can use lightning reflexes,monarch’s leap, and swoop in a chain to create space from a zerg allowing me to escape harms way. Unfortunately, although I had situations where I have escaped harms way from a zerg all it took was one theif to decide to keep chasing me. They manage to close the distance and quickly regain initiative to deal the finishing blow usually in the form of heartseeker spams. Of course, there are counters but a theif chases you down and one or two enemies follow the theif. I cannot simply turn around and avoid being backstabbed or heartseekered due to the fact that once I do the theives allies will reinforce either way unless I get to the water or somewhere safe such as spawn I’m dead. Whereas if it was the other way around in which I had two allies chasing a theif, they can tease by continously popping in and out of stealth while creating enough distance t outrun all of us at will. Even with the use of a stealth trap, all it takes for a theif to get away is infiltrators arrow for example. Yet here some of you are acting like theives is not even a class worth playing anymore. Furthermore, if a player that plays a ranger or most other class decide they want a build to survive a lot better, they quickly lose the dps needed to actually kill theives and as a result theives can consistently reset the fight by gaining full health coming out of stealth. I think a ranger having a counter to stealth is useful tool to counteract the abilities of a theif, it doesnt eliminate a theives ability to perform in spvp,tpvp, wvw or even pve. I definitely do not want other classes to have a counter stealth option, but I do like this update simply in regards to allowing rangers to have a counter stealth option which lets not forget is on a cooldown of I think 32s traited with the ability to reduce cd for shouts.

Ive taken a liking to my current build, you did not give any details as to what you wanted in a ranger build high dps? emphasis on survival? I wanted enough dps that I know I can kill while ultimately emphasizing survival, titled shout ranger. First I think you should be aware that there will be updates in the month of october especially for rangers.

Pets: at the moment jaguar and bear
Gear: apothecary (toughness, healing power, condition damage)
Weapons: your choice I myself use melee weapons but it does work well with long bow, or short bow but great sword has to be your second weapon set
Build: 0 0 30- I, VII, XI 30 -III, VIII, XII 10-III

I do not fight sword/pistol theives often, I do know they tend to teleport to you then use pistol whip and then they can retreat at will with their sword number two. Once you figure out the theives pattern you should definitely have a defensive skill evade/block for once they reach within your range and stun you with pistol whip because you will have one second before you are hit with a flurry of strikes after the pistol whip stun.

1. do not get backstabbed to help you do this, you need to go to control options and keybind about face. Once u keybind this it will give u the ability to turn face towards your enemy at will to avoid being backstabbed.
2. I believe u asked how to fight a dagger/pistol theif, fighting a dagger pistol theif requires knowledge how the theifs pattern. It is safe to generalize that all dagger/pistol theifs will follow the same pattern of blackpowder-heartseeker (for stealth)-followed by a backstab (automatic from stealth). This literally allows them to be not seen while taking a huge chunk of your health right away, once they use this combination they run out of initiative but will quickly regain a lot of it to repeat the process.
Counter strategy:
Now to explain your general counter as a ranger and from what you see in the video will give you more details. There are several options but it is highly based on your dps and build. With a regeneration build its easy to just recover all the hp you lost and only requires using your about face keybind to counter the backstab before going into your kill rotation. Without a regeneration build, its a bit trickier but very much possible. Step 1: as soon as you see a red circle on the ground assume the theif will heartseeker to you, and use up their initiative. You can A-dodgeroll, use a leap to create space (hornets sting, monarchs leap or swoop) , or lastly use a block/evade such as from your greatsword or sword. The important thing is once you do this you need to use your about face keybind to counter the backstab, then switch into your kill rotation which you would like to start with by using a cc such as point blank shot then rapid fire (with longbow). Tip: rapid fire tracks theives even while they are in stealth.If you use a short bow it will be your concussion shot first, or you can send your pet in for the cc if you use any that can knockdown foes when it comes to the pet i prefer jaguar cause the theif cannot even see it and it is a guaranteed 100percent crit chance while it is in stealth. I really hope this will informative please whisper or mail me if anything else.
I do main a ranger but i use the shout build with natures voice trait. Shouts used are sick em and guard third utility being signet of renewal, heal skill being troll unguent, healing spring works too for more condition removal.

I heard bout elmry bay’s famous weekend warriors, still i didnt expect to see them leading in overall score:O btw question for borlis pass players do u guys have organized guild groups? if so which are the notable ones? i guessing that all servers have them, but i havent seen any guild raids from borlis pass server. No doubt you guys have very knowledgeable karma train style commanders though.

I watched the first link for about a couple seconds noticed the elementalist was ahead of the guild right then i knew i should stop watching the video. On the other hand the second link posted by equinox was great. I like the fact that i could hear what was going on. Loved watching every part of the video till the ending with the drake quote:p reason: it brings up memories of the kittened music video drake made to go along with along with that track. as for mesmers:: 1. keep track of the times for their phantasm like phantasmal berserker hits every 7seconds so you want to avoid that every 7seconds
2. have retaliation up, when they blurred frenzy if you do not block it, one way to do it is light fields/blast finisher
3. create space with leaps cause mesmers are slow too creating space gives you time to get your heals up and re engage the fight its also a good way to keep track of who the real mesmer is because they often assume your going to run away and start chasing

I saw the topic of this and no you sir is just wrong… Especially in team fights who doesn’t want an elementalist on their team for those area combo fields. First tip for you: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo
please take the time to learn this! not to mention that my cleric elementalist can gain full health in 2seconds. Why must so many of you focus on seeing big numbers then complain when you die cause another class does big numbers?

I was not willing to read all of your opinions so I apologize if I simply repeat what some of you have already stated. I also play a ranger, and I do not like the class in any team situation apart, however they are great for 1 vs 1 (I use triple shout build). Actually Ill be honest I really hate the class. Anyway since your thread started with a circumstance in which the ranger down stated won let me present a counter circumstance in which the ranger down state does not win in 1 vs 1 if both players go down at the same time. Well basically a warrior has a better down state than ranger if they have the vengeance traited, If a ranger is downed same time as a warrior the warrior will be the first to get up and can simply pop stability and down the ranger before the pet is able to rally the ranger. Second of all there are utlity skills so that other classes can rally quickly as well such as engineer elixir R, or the warrior war banner (I admit these are rarely used). Thirdly, there are counters to the pet rezzing the ranger, not to mention they die so quickly to conditions and aoe. Lastly, as i play ranger as well I can vouche that you will barely ever get the chance to even pop your downed skill number 3 to rally your pet to rez you. The only chance you get to use it is if you have been downed and for whatever reason no enemy targets you right away.

lol when i fight necromancers and when I lose the fight it is always because I ended up with low health and before i get the chance to re heal I end with 5plus conditions, despite the fact that I run automated response on my engineer I dont see how it should be an issue for you. Infact I believe the trait was already nerfed. You are definitely doing something wrong on your part

Your interrupts and daze will stop a theif or any class from being able to use their skills for a second or two, since there were 6 of you that was the first mistake you all failed to do a theif cant stealth when they are dazed. Furthermore if they are stunned while dazed they are squishy enough that it would be enough to kill them right there. In a 1 vs 1 you will find perma stealth not very difficult just more or less time consuming.

My advice on stealth especially theives and mesmers (as other classes can stealth) starts by having invulnerable skills,interruptions, daze, stun as well as the use of maximizing healing and leaps in your build, utilities and traits. Ill explain in more detail. All class builds exception of mesmer and theif should have these equipped into their build,traits,utilities otherwise goodluck to you. to Your leaps are to create seperation ex: ranger-swoop,engineer-rocketboots,elementalist(ridethelightning if d/d). What occurs as a result is that the theif now has to use initiative to catch up to you and thus cannot immediately utilize their dps rotation, giving you enough time to heal up this works essentially well on my shout ranger. In fact, you might be called a runner for doing this, but if you do not utilize your leaps to create distance you pretty much become a punching bag besides if a thief can teleport, stealth and a mesmer can create 3 clones includin hard hitting phantasms then do not feel guilty using your leaps as temporary escape skills to avoid damage and get your heals in. Keep in mind that all theives and mesmers no matter their weapon set has a predictable pattern to them for example a dagger/pistol theif would use blackpowder, heartseeker before going for a backstab. A blackpowder is a smoke field and heartseeker is a leap finisher this grants them stealth. The tradeoff is their initiative will pretty much run out at this point, your leap works as the perfect counter due to the space it creates not allowing the theif to land the hit right of the stealth. Same thing applies to a mesmer, I believe every 7seconds you should seek to create space to avoid being hit by phantasms especially the notoriously annoying phantasmal berserker. A theif with maximum dps should be able to kitten a full cleric bunker to death, they would often start with steal while dazing as soon as you can select a skill again your leaps work as a counter or any invulnerable skill ex:ranger-protect me,engineer-magnetic sheild(if using sheild). Some general tips: 1. first of all everytime a theif goes into stealth create space and get ready to dodge roll to avoid backstab because everytime a theif is in stealth they have access to that skill. 2. Secondly do not let the theif land 3 auto attacks on you otherwise again you will be backstabbed. 3. until you get use to fighting theives and mesmers i highly suggest power toughness vitality or clerics power toughness healing power, the toughness will allow you to take enough hits that you can spare to make mistakes. Healing power I find especially useful for anyone who hates to die I can usually leap and recover full health utilizing waterfields/blastfinishers or regen abilities before the theif even gets another hit. 4. When it comes to mesmer any shatter spec will destroy you no matter how much toughness you have so leaps and popping invulnerable skills as soon as you see the shatters coming or right after you are hit with blurred frenzy. 5. As I mentioned before create space every 7seconds if you do not have the dps to kill a phantasms quickly. Im pretty sure I even went off topic from your original question but I hope this was informative, if not just watch the video lol

Thanks Kerona, xperfectionx, and efface 4 the replies, yes i just spend past hour watching kitten gvg especially the last one against RE was the best cause it had the voice to explain what they were doing instead of watching blobs going at it and trying to guess whats happening.
Also for the guy claiming mag working with tc your just wrong its not even worth trying to prove it to you. I do not see how it benefits us to work with TC and since when do alliances even work? If anything I’m surprised dragonbrand’s performance this week, I have not seen NNK or uhm OMEN at all this week:S Then again I guess its cause your held up defending against tc

I’m beginning to appreciate the random matchups despite the terrible dice rolls, mainly cause its presented the opportunity to fight new guilds I never knew existed before such as TSL, YUM, and RATS (JQ) etc.. What i actually do is sneak into one of our servers guild raids and try to blend in:P its been a somewhat enjoyable experience. Overall all these guilds are so talented and organized. However it seems like all or at least most the guild fights I’m involved in utilizes the hammer train style: stability, earthshakers you know that whole deal, so I was curious are there any guilds that uses a completely different open field tactic? I would love to watch some videos on them if they are available:)

lol what people complaining about mesmers? im a full bunker and if ever let a mesmer’s shatter hit me im down with little to no health. I have also seen other players who were not neccessarily as tanky as myself die right away after a shatter. In fact, I have a mesmer myself insta killing people with shatters:S its funny though while people claiming mesmers are weak, still i constantly hear claims for mesmers to be further nerfed. Hearing both arguments Im not even sure what side to pick-.-

hey all i just started playing ranger recently they are really fun in duels but apart from that i just simply detest the class that was my nice little intro:P Anyway I just wanted to ask a question regarding the stun breaks on the ranger utility options such as protect me, zephrs speed, and lightning reflexes, i am only mentioning these three as these are the ones i have used in structured pvp. Ive been in a couple pvp scenarios in which the utility skills which were suppose to break stuns did not actually perform its task, thus i lost all my hp within those 2seconds of being stunned. My question is as follows: Do these stun break options actually work? im not too familiar with the class, therefore im actually not sure if this is a bug, or maybe it appeared that way due to my current lags due to connection issues.

I always thought flamethrower was better suited as a secondary weapon at best. Like yes, we have the juggernaut trait, but it just does not do justice in wvw in my opinion thats cause when you die at least for me in world vs world its never from an npc or a player, but a big blob of enemy tags who decided to stop whatever objective they primarily to chase me down. So whatever you ultimately decide for your build slap rocket boots as one of your must have utilities.

i get the complaints but if you die you’re not even suppose to get back up being downed is the same as being defeated/dead. Only difference is when you downed, i now get the chance to shove a flag up yours… Well I guess i could also say its suppose to give you a slight chance of getting back up if your enemy is near dead whatever the circumstances may be. I don’t really see the point of improving the downstate cause even mesmers and thieves once they down hard chance of them getting back up if you understand how their down state works.

On this blah day, I would like to thank the general maguuman community. Your performance the last couple weeks have effectively convinced a former Yak’s Bend spy to not only make maguuma his new home, he has also quit his immoral ways of spying on other servers:D(Despite the blowout win by jq) Due to the fact, that they are so many of you that have contributed to making this server so enjoyable, I decided it is probably better to post on the forum as many of you will see this. Entangle - Bug? Short video

just two things to share
1. cloaking device trait on engineer allows them to automatically break out of entangle, so i would agree that entangle has a bug.
2. its easy to dodge roll and avoid being hit by entangle in the first place, funny enough half the time i just dodge roll to avoid a ranger attack and just so happens i dodged the entangle as well, not a complaint:))
