To say that I am annoyed by this is an understatement.
First I was annoyed by the whole ascended thing and decided that I am not going to grind my way to ascended weapons when we first learned about them. I am one of those people who bought the game due to it being touted as horizontal progression. Due to this I thought I would take advantage of the high prices in the TP and sold all of my mats.
I have two choices of what to do with this garbage: 1) delete it (which I really hate doing), 2) level my kittening crafting up to 450 to get rid of it while storing stacks and stacks of this garbage. I have used an unlevelled alt as dust storage. My wife and I will farm in Orr until we have enough mats to get our kittening weaponsmithing up to 450. I am also very put out that I have to use mats I would normally put on the TP since I am not going to bother with ascended kitten. If my alt runs out of room, I will delete the garbage.
I will eventually be gated out of content geared towards ascended gear and will soon be gated out of dungeons (“LF1m for [dungeon], ascended only”). So, to find that Anet is shoving this stuff down my throat, forcing me to level crafting that I have no further use for is a bit bothersome. I might even get over my aversion to deleting high level mats.

I really doubt you will but a guy can hope. You did this fantastic build… it would be a shame for it to go to waste (hope hope hope).
I am loving this!! This and the aetherblade jump puzzle are my favorites of your new content since launch.

I am not leaving the game over this but I agree with the OP and I am not going to put the level of effort I put into my (ex) main into any other character.
Until this last patch I believed that Anet would not drastically unbalance a class then, in their next discussion, basically blow off complaints about the unbalancing. Basically, I have lost faith in the company.
So, I am working on another character while I continue to collect laurels and guild run badges with my main (a ranger). I am not certain that I am going to get my new character ascended gear because I have no faith that Anet will not just off and nerf this class.
I am also very eagerly looking forward to the release of a long anticipated MMO later this year or early next year.

I do not fancy spending the money again but I would be passably happy if they offered this stuff in the gem store again, as I said at the end of my opening post.

Wait for the blog post this week.
I am awaiting the following series of updates with trepidation.
Being a bit of a pessimist, the only PVE content (other than bug fixes I hope) I expect is more fractals and ascended gear. I think that these series of updates are going to give a good indication of future direction the game is going to take.
Hopefully I am wrong and there is more than what I stated above for PVE.

Southern Lord, I spend a lot of time going through the lower areas as I farm, do diving goggles, etc., and help folks out as I pass through.
No kidding about the group events. I am starting a new toon and finding it much more difficult due to depopulation than I did my first ones.

I know they said that they are not going to open any new lands with the next couple of updates, however, that is not the only way they can introduce open world content. Working on Southsun Cove is one of many examples.
I am one of the “anti vertical progression” crowd and have made my peace with ascended gear: I will simply ignore it unless it becomes reasonably available via other means. I have made my peace with fractals: I will simply ignore them unless, down the line, I feel like it for fun. I am fine with, and do run, older dungeons.
What I do hope for is Anet giving people like me, who like PVE without being funneled into fractals and vertical progression, stuff for, well, people like me. If they do not do this I am not going to storm off in a huff or make a big mess over it. I will play what I have available to me until I have gotten all I can out of it.

My keybindings are very strange and others will give you better advice than me.
I am commenting to recommend a gaming mouse. Combining keyboard keybindings with a gaming mouse keybindings is excellent.
I used to use a Razer Naga and now use a Logitech G-600. I recommend both.

While I had not deleted the game from my computer, I had pretty much quit the game by the time of this AMA. I am one of those people who jumped on the GW2 bandwagon because I detest vertical progression, the endgame mentality, and gating. In WoW I was in a serious raiding guild and, after a bit of this, I realized exactly how much I hate this mentality. Ever since then I play a game until level cap, get a bit of gear, and quit because, contrary to what the players say, it is always the same.
Most of Mr. Whiteside’s posts were PR… stuff… but there was enough information given for me to move to a “wait and see” position.
What he said they are going to do is, while not ideal for me, something I can live with. It will interfere with my horizontal progression but not enough for me to quit the game.
Now the big wait and see: is he telling the truth? If he is, how badly will vertical progression and endgame mentality affect me?
Before the AMA I was at “wait and see,” however, it was “wait and see” with zero desire to play the game, even to do JPs which I love. I was, flat out, too disgusted with Anet to want to come in. Now I am at “wait and see” while playing old content like I have all along.

“Do you stand behind the decision of having the levelling system in FOTM, essentially fracturing your player base into many, many, different portions, with players only looking for the specific level they need to advance through level difficulty?
It was never a conscious decision to fracture the player base through the Dungeon. Honestly we were aware the dungeon was good but we didn’t know just how popular it would be. Nearly straight away we saw the issue and have been working on a fix since, we have explored multiple system”Good on Chris for owning up to this issue but quite frankly I find this unbelievable. As soon as it was announced there were people on the forums stating that it was going to happen.
And the moral of this story is that i need to pay more attention to the feedback we are receiving. There is a great deal going on so a method of more open communication between the teams/design and the community would be great and I intend to work on how we can accomplish this.
Chris
I have been on the razor’s edge of deleting the game and asking for a refund. I followed the AMA and, while I do not like some of what you have said (while liking others), I am willing to give it time.
I am one of those horizontal progression stick in the muds and am not at all happy with the changes but I am willing to give your new direction a chance. Basically, if your vertical progression does not interfere with my horizontal gameplay overly much, I am good.
My change in attitude is due to you actually speaking with us.

I am very against the new gear grind, gating, etc. I have no clue if this is true (it is a bit out there) but, wow, what a good read.
Good job.

Everything about the event has been covered. Also, the event is not my main issue. My main issue is the new turn the game is taking.
I hate endgame. I hate it to the point where, after having banged about in hardcore raiding guilds in WoW, I left WoW because of the endgame mentality. Ever since then I have started a game, gotten to endgame, and left the game.
The lack of endgame and its resultant gating is why I loved GW2. Now endgame with its mentality is here along with gating caused by endgame.
I am not going to participate and, if Anet continues in this direction, am going to leave the game when later content requires the gear grind in order to beat level difficulties. Then I will leave, go to another game, rinse and repeat. Hopefully it will take longer to reach endgame in whatever comes next than it has to reach endgame here.
Since WoW I spend the absolute minimum on games because I know I am going to leave when I reach endgame. So, my wallet is closed to the gem shop unless Anet shows me there is a reason to expect to stay for any length of time.
