Good one! I don’t think I’ve seen this suggestion before.

I hit “reply” on your post so I could copy it (linked to your post) to the main trait thread in case Anet is quick on the draw and locks this so I can’t copy and paste.

We’ve lost some good ones because of that.

Anet, it’s almost 2015. Please tell us you’re working on the trait system fixes. Even a simple “We’re working on them, but we can’t tell you when the fixes will be ready” would work for us, just so we know you’re listening and working on it.

We have already been told that. I think the last time was on page 41 or so. For me, words no longer matter. Action is the only thing I will believe.

If he’s familiar with MMOs and he lives near enough to be in the same room, maybe let him play your toons for a bit. That way he can feel what its like on a leveled toon that can go everywhere? He could then try out PvP, WvW, and PvE.

If he doesn’t enjoy it, though, don’t push him.

Anet’s customer service has been spot on for me. This includes spending over a week emailing with me to try to get a dying computer to continue working for a bit longer. They have also helped me when I have done various stupid things I couldn’t fix.

Another specific and unexpected thing was the odd, quirky humor of the game. Most games have humor but this game has it tucked in the oddest places and generally strange. They also tuck odd bits in strange places where there is no reason to go, like the cat war council and the turkeys in AC. Oh… strawberry patch.

Super Adventure Box! Never, ever seen anything like it in any MMO. Please bring it back.

JPs! I don’t care that the rewards suck, I run them just for fun.

I am listing these because I am picking one general department and a few things that most people don’t mention. Most of that quirky humor is in what I consider “vanilla GW2” but it still pops up, like on the Labyrinthine Cliffs. Psst… Anet… more of that please. I still do things like talk to the Charr who are not too sure that there are cows falling out of the sky.

A lot of people mention it but I still will… the art. That’s what got my attention in the first place and I still wander around gawping at stuff.

I wonder how many people have spoken with the random NPC in Lion’s Arch about cats. He loves them and will chat a bit about it.

edit:
there is solution, make suggestion to create item in store “one click to 80

This suggestion, especially since you say it would be a “solution” to the trait thing, shows that you don’t know what you are talking about.

Assuming that this existed, then you would be a level 80 with almost no skill points after you bought your necessary utilities. Even if you power level in EotM, you get the normal skill points from leveling along with Scrolls of Knowledge from champ bags that drop at an approximately 1:7 rate.

That will not even buy you a basic build.. not even close.

Irony, Anet wanted away with Trinity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gregori.5807

Gregori.5807

I disagree.

I was usually DPS in games with the Holy Trinity. If we had a good healer, and I didn’t do something stupid, I usually didn’t have to worry about keeping myself alive. If we had a good tank, they absorbed most of the damage.

Here, while I am deepsing along with the rest of the group, I have to manage my own health, CC, I take equal damage to the rest, and I have to keep track of my part of group buffs and heals. That last bit means I have to know when to pop my heals and buffs, which ones to trait for to help the group, what skills to help the group and when, where to stand in relation to the group, etc.

I prefer this to the Holy Trinity.

Yes, PVE dungeons are easy but, with all of the above, they could, and should, be more challenging.

Traits matter to some classes as you are leveling. I have felt this pain firsthand with a Mesmer (I want to do JPs with my wife on her mesmer).

I gave this system the benefit of the doubt and tried it out via leveling a Guardian with full traits..

I hated most of the process and vowed to not do it again.

However, as I said, I decided to roll a Mesmer. Playing this toon with no traits was much more painful than a Guardian. It was painful enough that I bought my trait tree.

People who say that we don’t “need” traits at lower levels are correct… technically. However, if you want to level alone, or have to level alone, you are going to feel the pain. For classes like this, while its true that you may not need traits during leveling, without them you are going to have a much more difficult and less enjoyable time.

… and make it possible to trade in skill points for Scrolls of Knowledge.

I really have no clue how many skill points I have over my account. The only thing I can do with them is make part of Ascended gear. If I remember correctly, which I may not, I think they said that skill points were going to become a form of currency.

Give us an NPC who will exchange a Scroll of Knowledge for “x” numbers of skill points. It wouldn’t have to even be 1:1. Make them 1:2, 1:3, or even 1:4.

As far as unlocks, other than grandmaster traits, they should be soloable and triggerable. And, even more importantly, the unlocks should be in a level appropriate area.

Unlocks should also be account wide.

I really think that the idea of unlocking traits is a good one. However, the way GW2 does it is deplorable.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gregori.5807

Even if you level “normally,” compared to EotM, the end result is not nearly enough trait points to buy your traits and skills. Unless you spend your leveling time hunting traits, like I did when leveling my Guard, you are not going to wind up with more than a handful of traits.

The amount of skill points needed above and beyond number you earn (not counting racial utilities or Mistfire wolf):
236.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Traits/page/31#post4214959

… and this was before they removed a few skill points from the total.

So, even if the OP had leveled like some of you wanted him to, he still would have a valid complaint.

Traits for newly created characters

I would be interested in the opinions of people who are fine with the trait redo after they have done it on at least 3 alts.

Also I would be interested in how many traits they unlocked per toon. Did they unlock all of them or some of them? If they did not unlock all of them, why didn’t they, especially since they think that the new trait system is good?

The NPE is a separate issue from the trait redo. The trait redo was from last April and the NPE changes did not affect the issues with the trait changes.

Indeed when the “new” pvp was announced I saw people posting enthousiastic posts.
I did not answer but was thinking: “eh guys, do not be over-enthousiastic, few months ago they modified the trait system which was certainly very nice on paper and when announced”.

In the daily/monthly announcement we can read something like: “do not worry we have thought about everything”’ … Yeah, for the trait system too you thought about everything, right ?

Additionally, while we complain here since, what, 8 months ?, we get lots of new things – new episodes of the story, new pvp, new daily/monthly, new gem UI (which was broken but quickly repaired-hence, this is their income – but what for this ?
I know it is different teams etc … but can’t some people of one team help the other ?

I mean will Anet break every piece of the game one after the other ? What about repairing the 1st one before tackling the next one ?

Imarion

^^This.

Not only does the implementation of whatever Anet announced often suck, but the trait debacle has taught me that, no matter how bad it is, there is a solid chance that they will not fix it.

It seems that the only way they will fix things is if it hits their bottom line, like the gem exchange.

I really wish they had reset everyone’s traits rather than grandfathering. If it had happened to everyone rather than trickling in as people rolled and leveled alts over time, the screaming just might have been loud enough to force Anet to do something.

I was mapping tonight and heard someone in map chat being advised to buy a trait linked to a bugged event (devourer queen). As I always do, I pointed out that traits used to cost less than 3g to unlock all of them.

There also used to be a lot less gold in the market. You can make 1 gold quite quickly in this game now even if you’re a newbie. 1g isn’t that big of a deal anymore.

My newbie friend had about 10 gold in their first couple weeks of playing just from going around doing random stuff they came across. And she was around level 20 at that point so she has plenty of time to accumulate more gold as she gets into the higher level areas and starts getting better drops and doing more profitable activities.

And how is your hypothetical newbie doing with skillpoints? You know, the things that go to buying actual… skills… along with traits? And, which have been overall reduced since the beginning of the game?

If this newbie is swimming in skill points, give me his secret.

I dislike the gold cost but can live with it… as a leveled veteran. The skill point cost, on the other hand, that is both often forgotten in these discussions and much harder to meet than the gold.

Gregori.5807

One thing I would suggest to all returning players is to not delete your old toons if you want a race reroll.

If you want a race reroll or some other change from a class you already have, don’t delete your old toon… roll a new one in a new character slot instead. If you do delete and reroll you might find yourself in a world of hurt if you are one of the people who can’t stand the trait redo. If you are OK with the trait redo after having earned/bought all traits (sounds good on paper, in game is different), then delete the old toon. Pre last April toons are not subject to this problem.

With this in mind, go back into game and find out.

What did you want out of GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gregori.5807

Gregori.5807

I came because of the Manifesto. I had not played GW1, it was only peripherally on my radar (going to play it though). I heard of GW2 a year or two before it came out, read the Manifesto, and thought “hot kitten ! Finally a game that does not have the things I hate about MMOs!” Horizontal progression instead of vertical, play as you want, not having to fight over nodes, etc. etc.

A lot of that is gone. It is not the same game that it was in beta and shortly after release. When ascended gear entered the picture, I knew the Manifesto no longer applied.

What keeps me playing is the art, which is still one of my favorite things, JPs (I am an addict), sometimes the quirky humor that was everywhere in GW2 at the beginning still pops up, and my wife and I make our own fun.

I am not in much anymore due to arthritis/ tendonitis and having to separate the game from anet as a company. For instance, it took me over a month to forgive anet for ascended and now I generally handle that issue by ignoring it as much as possible. The trait debacle is, at this time, what I have to fight against most these days. And its a big one, bigger than Ascended.

So, when my arthritis lets me, my wife and I plan to do something (often JPs) and see if I can be pulled back into the game that day.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gregori.5807

Veteran here and after leveling two new alts to lvl 80 I think the idea of unlocking traits via events is just fine. Hop around the world and get the “must have” traits and it was even cool seeing parts of Tyria I haven’t been to in a while.

If you feel lazy or whatever just pay up. The only real complaint I see is that some of the required events are pretty difficult like the champ grub in WvW. So maybe some tweaking is in order. In GW1 we had to hunt down champs to learn their elite. Fun stuff.

The real problem with traits is that they have little to no use until level 80. I honestly don’t pay them much attention until then.

I’m a wvw player, I don’t like PvE that much that all I do is running around exploring. Just pay up is easier said than done as it’s pretty costly – gearing new characters is anyway.

As a veteran player, its the skill points that hit me. Since finishing my post April Guardian, which wiped out most of my Scrolls of Knowledge despite having done about 40 traits via world unlocks, I have managed to crawl up to about 320 Scrolls of Knowledge.

I am not doing it again, especially with no instance owner now. Now I can’t start a dungeon as an on level player, even with saying outright that I am [x] level, need a group to get a trait unlock. They would just kick me.

I have given in and rolled a Mesmer because my wife and I would like to dual mesmer through things like the Aetherblade JP. I did OS already for my falling damage reduction, which is necessary, and I enjoy JPs. However, when I select one build, I will probably buy just enough for that build. I kind of hope I don’t like Mesmer much so I don’t want to play it enough to need traits.

I couldn’t imagine making enough gold for this on my first toon and, even as a veteran (who does not like farming champ bags), the skill point cost is massively over the top.

My reply is going to be long enough without quoting everything. No disrespect intended.

I don’t believe they are trolling this thread or wanting it shut down.

I believe that they are not going to do much about the issue and, instead of coming out and saying so, they are hoping the issue will die. And… it is. Most of us who have been in this fight since the beginning are gone. Others have come in, joined the fight, and left.

I believe that Anet does not want to close this thread, rather they want it to die a quiet death and be buried. This thread keeps the issue from spilling into the main forum, or it used to. By now if this thread was closed, the issue would pop up here and there, quickly dying down. If it had been closed a few months earlier, there would have been a kaboom.

Anet can act quickly when they want, as they showed with the gems issue and commander tag issue.

There is no constructive dialogue left to have. All ideas have been posed, extensive brainstorming has taken place, and all that is left is an echo chamber of us complaining to ourselves.

After 7 months with a couple of devs and Gaile coming in to offer platitudes and promises with no followup (other than more platitudes and promises), I can’t imagine there would be any reason to expect us to not be a bit put out.

I see all your points, but for me, I have an excess of skill points, and quite a bit of silver. I’ve also found several traits unintentionally, and this is my first char, not even lvl 80. I’ll admit, that what I’m doing to lvl most people don’t do (mapping) which accounts for my excessive skill points (I just spent like 50 the other night leveling up random skills). I suppose I sympathize, but I don’t mind the whole, “Finding the trait” thing to be too bad.

Anyway thanks for all your insight people.

well, keep us posted, when you get all your traits. how you feel about getting them as you progress

Unfortunately I too agree that the effort of issuing this challenge may be wasted. It’s just that there are 100’s if not 1000’s of excellent suggestions in this thread and there isn’t much left to suggest.
I did mention metrics at the dev’s disposal and still believe that spreadsheets, graphs and numerical data is only half the picture. Nothing beats experiencing the content of the current trait acquisition system for giving those in charge of fixing this a ‘feel’ for what players experience.
What looks good on paper may translate horribly in game. When comparing the numbers of a certain trait that the majority of players have bought instead of acquired they will know exactly why. A trait with an event that’s bugged, takes a long time to acquire, or requires completion of difficult content will become clear. It won’t be the same as a ‘new player’ experience but it will give them an idea of what this system promotes.

I would like to see just one dev post they’ve done this on all 5 characters with every single trait unlocked on them all.
I still have hope. And thanks for the signature idea, I used it myself.

^^I think the challenge is worth writing down. Even if it does no good, which I think is the case, we are on record as having made the suggestion… along with similar suggestions and the myriad of other often excellent suggestions.

If this causes damage to the game, nobody can say that we didn’t try to prevent it.

Of all individual suggestions, I think the challenge one is the best as you explained.

If it were possible, I would somehow make the devs hit this cold like we did. They would have to google, get stuck at bugged events without knowing they are bugged, get stuck waiting for random event chains to start, etc.

This from Keysha, who is sitting next to me: “Ideally would be a brand new player to GW2 playing the game for traits with a dev watching over their shoulder, keeping their mouths shut… and just watching how this player has to do it on all 5 characters. Because then it would be a brand new player who doesn’t know the tricks, locations, or timing of events.”

I would give them the entire trait experience from our point of view.

I really do think that all of our efforts, including issuing that challenge to the devs, is wasted. I am certain that they have given us our answer, however, they don’t want to come out and say it.

Personally, I would strongly prefer it if they would come out and say it rather than continue to hand out assurances of changes being made for the better in some indeterminate future.

I have put a link to the dev challenge in my signature not for the devs but for the forum dwellers. However, I have my doubts that many forumites look at signatures, much less click on any links.

If nobody stirs the pot in this thread, no other issues are addressed and fixed (like the gem exchange and commander tags), and there isn’t any significant content being released, I believe this thread will fade away within a couple of months. I have been in this fight since the beginning and have watched people fight for change here, only to leave after enough headache, often leaving the game as well.

I am close to being done posting here as well. I am still playing the game but I have to fight to enjoy it knowing what I know about how the company has handled this.

After this thread has died, the traits people will flare up and post when there are content releases, anet fixes other things, and there will be a big flare up next April 15th.

I thought adding Keysha’s list to the prior one did cover the issue of unlocking all traits on all 5 characters (4 alts) that we had by default.

Good idea, let them also do 100% map completion on all toons, story completion and crafting a legendary, also they have to reach at least gold rank in regular wvw and have to reach top 100 in pvp on all their 5 chosen professions.

After that they’re allowed to improve the trait system they already have all data of.

I would like to see them do what you describe, and more, but think the trait challenge should be just acquiring the traits.

I would love to have a further challenge with what you incorporated to let them learn for themselves how functional the traits, themselves, are… both as individual traits and as trait lines. But that should be for another thread to keep this one from being closed down.

So here I fixed the challenge to include both lists:
Dev Trait Challenge

  1. They can’t buy the traits
  2. They must unlock all of the traits per character
  3. They must use all five character slots and finish out each one on a different profession ."
  4. They must do it on a non-dev account.
  5. They cannot ask their co-workers to fix bugged events, they have to do the bug report system, just like the rest of us.
  6. They have to remain ‘unknown’ so they get just as much help as an average player for group events/dungeons. This INCLUDES not being in a guild to start, and not letting anyone know who they are, so they deal with the same stuff we all do.
  7. They have to play exclusively to unlock traits, and get all of the traits unlocked.

Yes she was: it was a combination of both posts (she is my wife so we discussed it… she is at a family gathering so I am posting this). I have quoted your neatly summarized post alone so I can tuck it in my sig.

[Suggestion] All characters to pass Exp to alts

I would rather have skill points movable from character to character because a character that could insta-level to 80 would be badly kitten. (<——oh come on now, I used a word that is also the name of a huge image creating program)

An NPC where we could exchange a certain number of skill points for a Scroll of Knowledge would take care of some of the current trait problem and provide a use for all of those unused skill points.

I logged in to find after almost a year to find my ranger’s traits refunded and the new system in place.

First, let me say that I do think it will be easier for new players to learn how to pick traits.

You might have had your traits refunded but none of them were locked. Your toon was grandfathered in like all pre April 15th toons are.

Let us know how much you like the new trait system when you have leveled an alt to 80 under the new system, unlocking all traits.

Most of us are not complaining about the new trait system in theory. We are complaining on how this trait system has been implemented.

I have done it. I leveled a post patch guard to 80 with full traits (unlocking about 40 of them) and will never, ever do it again: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Traits/page/54#post4467452

The above post by Wolfheart pretty much sums up all of it for me.

I love the game still but the only way I can play is by trying to forget how Anet is treating us. This comment is mainly for a placemarker so I can find Wolfheart’s post again.

Another patch and still no fix

No surprise here.

I am willing to bet that we will get, at the most, some changed unlock tasks but the vast majority will remain the same.

I was also wondering if Gaile (or someone else appointed to the nasty task of giving us bad news) would come in today since it was update time and we, yet again, got nothing.

She did.

Gaile, if you read this, the only thing that will put a dent in the hostility about this issue is if something was actually done to help. It is way past its sell by date for promises.

Describe GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I tell them that I find the game to be the most artistically pleasing game I have played, including the music… and no subscription fee. Not having to fight other players for farming nodes has resulted in my WoW/ Lotro/etc induced hatred of other players dissipating. If you like to jump, the jump puzzles are fantastic. I always point this out because JPs are one of my favorite things. If they want the Holy Trinity, don’t buy this game. Same if they enjoy hardcore dungeons and raids.

I enjoy the combat mechanics, albeit that is mostly PVE. The closest I come to PvP is WvW and I am usually a zerg baby because I suck so I really don’t hold an educated opinion.

The game has a massive problem: dev interaction with players. Anet has a history of really messing things up and not being receptive to criticism, constructive or not. It also has unresolved problems that have been borked for 2 years now (like condition damage) and that the RNG is the most brutal I have ever seen.

I tell prospectives specifically about the trait problem because I think it is the most damaging current issue and send them the thread. Then I let them make up their own minds.

I used to be a diehard fanboy so have had people coming to me for GW2 opinions. This is the gist of what I tell them.

Problem is, Tolunart, is that I was 100% new to MMO’RPG’* when I came here, and I never needed the NPE despite not knowing anything about stats, rarity, traits, anything. I asked in chat to learn things, despite being socially reclusive, and enjoyed the experience. NPE turns an MMO into a single player game and people don’t learn that way.

But I see what you mean about target market. I guess veterans and player retention is not their target market. China is, it appears.

Yoroiookami – you have WAY too many vowels in your name :p

I’ll miss seeing you around, Guzzi. Good luck to you.

GW Veterans missed out on items due to RNG?

The biggest item I have gotten through RNG is a Pyre dye via a Black Lion Chest while keyfarming.

Other than that, I don’t think I have had a drop worth more than about 16g. I can only remember one drop that high. I am very happy and surprised when I get something that sells for 4g.

I have been playing since Beta.

I promise that you’re not being snubbed (Tachenon, you made me both smile and wince there, with your definition of the term). Please know this thread is serving a good purpose and that is is offering the dev team valuable information. The fact is, though, there’s simply nothing new to say on the subject right now.

Having said all that, your input is extremely valuable, and that’s why it was requested back in April.

I know it sucks to bring bad news but, after seven months and “simply nothing new” the dev team is snubbing us, by the definition Tachenon provided.

Seven months Gaile.

I am guessing that, with the fix to the gem store (that took a matter of days), we flared up again and someone said that you, lucky you, had to go in an quiet us down again. Same thing as when Jon came in to tell us that the thread is too long and to put us on a hamster wheel after enough of us hollered loudly enough in another thread for a dev to come into this one.

I would respect the devs coming clean and saying “deal with it” rather than these wishy washy pseudo-promises of some nebulous “fix” somewhere in the future.

A month or so after this was rolled out would have been time for the pseudo promises. By now the sell date for these empty promises is long gone.

And the devs have made it clear that there’s no chance that these concerns will be forgotten. Absolutely no chance of that at all.

Please relay this to the devs: prove it.

After seven months and all the activity around us, I don’t believe it. Put their money where their “mouths” are, where they are forcing yours to be, and prove it.

The more I watch red names reply around this thread and solve (or seriously try to solve) issues that have come up since this trait destruction, the more disgusted I become.

Since they took a stance of talking to the community (to a degree), the ignore of this issue becomes louder and louder.

After having abandoned my alts I am still in the game to a degree because I can play my 80s and generally ignore a lot of this, but knowing how deafeningly loud our ignoring is is taking the will out of me to even play them.

Do you find JP's (Jumping puzzle) rewarding ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gregori.5807

Gregori.5807

Rewarding as far as loot? No.

Fun and challenging? Yes! JPs are amongst my favorite parts of the game. I have good jump days and bad jump days, the good days progressively outnumbering the bad. If I find that I am having a good jump day, I will probably just start running through the JPs.

I started out as a crap jumper, taking forever to manage one. Regardless, I have been JP obsessed since Beta so I kept at it. Now I am probably a good to very good jumper… I find this rewarding.

I play one other game and had 3 friends who joined me here in gw2 when I started playing gw2. They stopped; having joined after me they have several characters affected by the trait change and they lost interest. They simply don’t like it.

Perhaps they are an example of many people who dislike it. You see, they never posted here. They simply gave up when the fun was gone.

We were playing our other game last night, and gw2 came up. Their advice to 2 other people with whom we were playing? Don’t waste your time with gw2, they made awful changes to the game.

Anet has no clue how many sales they are losing. I know, for a fact, that I have cost Anet quite a few customers just by showing prospective buyers this thread and by them telling their friends, etc.

Us vocal ones are the minority. Most of the customer hemorrhage are certainly coming from those who quietly leave the game in disgust… and tell their friends.

I logged in gw2 this morning, as every so often I return for a short bit. I was actually told that only noobs need the “OP traits” by some “pro gamer” (he/she said pro gamers do not need the crutch of traits) . It has gotten very weird in the game.

In addition, I noted players still having no traits. I make it a point to talk to friendly players and see what they think, say, how they feel. Those who began after the patch just seem to feel that traits are optional extras. They have no builds, really.

A while back, I met someone who had placed points in the various trait lines, and had no traits. Just the minor adepts in each line….I was informed this was the “balanced build” that people should be using if they know how to play. I did not argue, I am just interested in how this has affected things.

I just cannot see this as a good thing.

^^This is scary. Whelp, maybe that’s why I am having better luck in WvW in my exotic gear w/ ascended trinkets. And here I thought I was getting better.

I love the game. Actually, I love the game I bought and can, for the most part, ignore the parts of the game we have now that I can’t stand (vertical progression, for one).

As I watch devs reply around this thread and fix issues that have arisen since this one (commander tags and gems, for example), the milk is being spoiled for me. I have 4 80s and a grandfathered 42 Necro so I should be good but I am finding myself playing less and less as I watch this ignoring.

I gave the system a fair shake: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Traits/page/54#post4467452

The only dev response we have gotten is to tell us that the thread was too long to read and jump back on the hamster wheel to crank out more ideas. Later, Gaile Gray came in to repost that dev post.

… all while Gaile and others post around this one.

Here’s another suggestion: replace the skill points needed to buy the traits with gems. I hear they are really easy and unconfusing to get these days, especially for new players.

…kitten, I just realized that that is still an implementation actually superior to what we currently have.

sad now.

Don’t give them any ideas. :P

Sadly it might be only way to get “the right” people outraged by the trait system since all of us talking about it now for 7 months don’t seem to hold as much weight as those people over on the gem exchange post.

It wasn’t the people in the gem exchange thread that got them to start working on a fix. It was the review sites that blasted the game and the people that chimed in on those sites. You are correct in saying that the correct people need to be outraged for change to happen though. We need more review sites to get in on this.

I don’t understand why review sites and the whole player base didn’t start blasting on this back in April.

People didn’t find out how bad this was en masse. It kind of trickled in as people rolled alts and hit the trait wall themselves. A lot of people did not roll them right away, some still have not.

I’ve seen it mentioned on gaming sites here and there but nothing big.
