Cyyrix,

Yeah when I use a focus I can switch runes, so I use earth runes. The added protection proc, plus protection duration means a whole lot of 33% damage reduction.

Mattenator,

I’m currently using the ascended Triforge, but I will switch it out for the collar, power/tough/+Crit damage.

I don’t think there is any doubt that the Sceptre can be used and can be used well. The question is whether another weapon can do the job better.

You can certainly achieve a significant amount of DPS with just Ether Bolt, but is it better than Spatial Surge DPS? The answer is actually yes, at close range. At longer ranges however Spatial Surge takes over, plus it also has 33% more range, is hitscan and is unreflectable.

What about Illusionary Counter? Obviously this is comparing apples to oranges, but let’s compare it to Mirror Blade. In terms of damage they are not dissimilar, but Mirror Blade has a shorter CD and stacks Might and Vulnerability. Illusionary Counter has a longer (effective) range and blocks an attack: it also roots you for short time when it triggers. Overall, if damage is what you want, Mirror Blade will likely give you more of it.

As for Confusing Images, it is actually quite damaging in Power or condition builds. The problem is, as mentioned multiple times, it is depressingly easy to avoid by any competent opponent.

Another thing to consider is Clones. Even in a Shatter build this is significant, as Clones will generally get a few attacks off before they get Shattered. In this department, with Sharper Images, the Greatsword is vastly superior over the Sceptre.

Generally, the GS is just a superior ranged DPS weapon than the Sceptre is. I suppose if you want the defensive strength of the Staff and want to use a particular off-hand you can justify using the Sceptre over the GS, but that’s about it.

I hope you realize that you are comparing a two handed weapon to a 1 handed mainhand. There is no weapon you can compare the Scepter with in the Mesmer set because it is the ONLY 1 handed range main we have. You can’t compare it with the sword either because one is melee one is not..

I am with Seven here, I use the Scepter and I like it.. I also dueled him with my thief when he was using it and he used it quite effectively.

It’s crazy how far a scepter opinion thread can get de-railed, right? Dank and all the [envy] guys are the real deal. Some of the best PvP’ers I’ve come up against. Just keep smoking people with the scepter, Dank and Andro and Moutza… lol.

To everyone else, keep using a greatsword. Yes… yes… It is far superior.

Weird my post isn’t displaying right….. was trying to say if scepter and torch are so bad maybe someone should tell Flimpy and Seven o_O

If you actually watch Flimpy, you’ll notice that he spends at least 80% of his time in staff. The only times he goes into scepter/torch are to use the prestige basically. His usages of confusing images just show how weak the skill is, where he rarely lets the skill channel the entire time, because he is forced to dodge halfway through. I suspect he uses the scepter simply because he wanted another ranged weapon to go with the staff, but it is obscenely obvious that his build works with the staff, not the scepter.

As for seven, he is running a power build with a scepter. This works largely due to the fact that he is running in a team, which also explains the use of veil as a utility. However, his build would be more effective if he dropped the scepter and torch, put the swords together on 1 weapon swap, and took the greatsword, because the greatsword has almost everything the scepter and torch have.

whoa, whoa, whoa… ok… I wasn’t going to say much in this thread because I was pretty sure the video proof was more than enough. But now I have people telling me how to play a mesmer, and what would be more effective…

I remember months ago, I was told how bad the scepter was. So I went out and got a scepter. With a high enough +crit damage, it melts people. This has nothing to do with the fact that I run in a team… And veil is there for a good reason. 8 seconds of stealth and chaos armor for me, my clones, and my phantasm, no matter what weapon set I’m in…

The dps increase from using a Scepter was huge. I spend all of my time in WvW, or dueling opponents, and if anyone I have faced in all my many hours dueling would come here and testify… they would -all- say, “Yes”, the scepter can be used, and used very well.

Not only do I get 1.6k crits from auto-attacking, not to mention clone generation, but my Scepter block hits for 3 to 4k… If you see chaos storm on the ground? Put block up and walk in it. Boom, ripost proc. An ele put down ring of fire? Or line of fire? Put up block and walk in it. Boom, ripost proc. The devil is in the details. I go looking for ground aoe now, just to block the affect of it, and trigger a massive damage ripost to whomever laid it down… and it spawns a clone. All of this, and I’m not even running a “power” build. I have 0 points in domination.

So if you don’t mind, sir, don’t tell me or these poor souls what would be more effective in my build…

Ok… so my opinion of the scepter is this. I dig it. But that is because I understand it, and have practiced with it. Don’t just dismiss things because someone tells you how bad they are. Do what I do, go out and find out for yourself.

(but yeah by all means I will welcome a scepter buff, too)

lol dank

We had a large group of invaders following us one night, so I drop a portal, run to the top of the keep stairs, then drop the exit portal, and lay down my superior siege…

“We’ve got ’em now, men! We will hold them at this choke point” I cry as everyone portals to me, and begins dumping supply into my siege. As the enemy approaches the top of the stairs, I turn to see my newly built…. flame ram.

I manage to get out a “….oh kitten” before I am trampled, and my screen is flooded with invader laughter.

Dess,

Hey thanks for the kind words. It’s nice to know someone else gets a kick out of this stuff, besides me. :P

Ryodan,

I can’t recall exactly what I was running in the video, probably just put 10 into dom out of chaos to pick up empowered illusion trait. I move stuff around almost every day just for kicks. I moved away from staff and wanted to pick up a unique weapon set. I would recommend staff though for group play. I’ll add some narration and thought process in my next video to break everything down. Thanks for the suggestion!

Daniel,

You got it bro, people come to me and say that this or that is weak, and I just try to see for myself. Scepter is sick man. Sword is sick. Staff.. is sick. Pistol? Sick. Torch? Yup.. sick… I think it’s fun to give everything a shot. Keeps me sharp, and it breaks up the monotony of one play-style. Yeah once you get your armor and trinkets lined out, you’re there man.

Shaktiboi,

I haven’t used the traits listed for some time, but only as a primer for others and a solid foundation to build on. It looks like you have done just that! Very nice info listed in your post, and I thank you for the time you spent showing me the pro’s and con’s. Very cool bro.

Unfortunately, I run in a very small team, vs. a very large zerg. The core of my playstyle is being able to break the target of the 4 or 5 other people that I am not focused on bringing down. If a stealth is only a nano second long, it still does it’s job of breaking the target lock of a group of people, forcing them to target me again among clones. I’m sure it doesn’t sound that impressive here on paper, but as I work inside the T5 kill’s within WvW, it has fast become necessity for how I play this game. Outnumbered.

The focus can be such an amazing weapon, pull, and interrupt if used right! I carry one around always. I started with a focus when I first began playing a mesmer, such a great tool to use.

I am currently in a hybrid phantasm build at the moment, using a scepter off hand sword, sword and off hand torch, shown in my latest vid. I love using crazy builds and have probably exhausted every combination of traits and weapons.

I love what you have done here though, and the info you are giving is really clean. You are spot on. Your build modifications that you have introduced would be 100% more effective in Zerg vs Zerg type situations. So my hats off, thank you for posting and showing another great example of how versatile the Mesmer is. Well done, sir!

Oellph,

You sure can! Basically it goes “Oh kitten they see me -shatter-” :P

I look at it a few different ways. If I’m running a phantasm build with little points into illusions, then I don’t shatter often. If I have no phantasms up, and am in sword/torch, I shatter then. If an opponent is closing in on me, and I think they are going to blow some cooldowns, I’ll do a cry of frustration. I save the diversion shatter for when I see a class channeling a heal. Some classes are really easy to interupt if you know what to look for. The ele has a pretty animated heal process, for instance.

I also hang on to diversion when I am going to rez an ally. I do a sword 3 to the target enemy that has just downed an opponent. I then run to the ally, don’t leap, and begin rezzing. When the opponent goes to stomp the ally, then hit diversion. Simplified if you have illusionary persona…

One thing that I rarely do, is do a shatter that leaves me lonely… Meaning, always make sure you have enough endurance to generate a clone on dodge, or you have your skills off cooldown that generate clones, before a shatter. You want them back up and ready to rock immediately.

Sazdek,

I’ve bound the scroll (forward and backward) to keypad 8 and keypad 2, respectively, in my Razor mouse software. Then in game, bound attack one to Keypad 8, dodge to Keypad 2. Macro-ing is a no no in the user agreement, but since they are bound to a single key stroke, it doesn’t fall under the definition of a macro. One key press, one skill use.

Opacus,

Hey bud sorry you’re missing some stats! If you check the first post I list the gear I’m using. Perhaps you don’t have Ruby upgrades in your trinkets?

SamStar,

Awesome bro, very interesting build!

Manoa,

Good deal, I’ll be looking for Lusnatuis out on the battle field.

Sazdek,

I don’t use Combat Mod, as targeting nearest enemy with Capslock is my preffered method of targeting. I had to google Combat Mod to see what it was.

q = heal
e = util 1
r = util 2
alt + e = util 3
alt + r = elite

wad = movement (i’ve unbound the “s” key, I always do this, because backpeddling is a no no, it’s like putting a cripple on yourself, and is the slowest form of movement.)

s = mindwrack
z = distortion
x = diversion
c = cry of frustration

scroll mouse wheel forward = attack 1
scroll mouse wheel backwards = dodge
mouse button 2 = attack 2
mouse button 3 = attack 3
mouse button 4 = attack 4
mouse button 5 = attack 5
mouse wheel click = switch weapons

tab = target
capslock = select nearest target (very important)

Also as a note, I always have Free Camera checked in options, so I can look behind me and still use skills without the camera auto panning to the front if I let go of the mouse.

Dan,

Hey main. My stats change so often I really couldn’t shoot you a straight answer. If you put together the gear I had listed and the build you’re looking at 3ksih attack, 2.9k armour, 41% crit chance with a 71% crit damage.

Opacus,

Nice man glad you’re jumping on the survivability movement. You can still dish out damage, just have to find ways to squeeze out extra power/crit! Nice job staying on your feet.

Hi thanks for posting a wonderful guild, it makes wanna try out Mesmer as my first playing profession. I am super noob here just bought the game few days ago and turned level 11 today, wondering what slot skills or Elite should be useful in your build? Can you give some advice for super newbie like me? Appreciate it!!!

I would recommend Mirror Images, Blink, and Decoy with Mass Invisibility for WvW Roaming. All of your utilities and the elite’s are situational, though, so you will want to change them often.

EasymodeX,

You are absolutely right about the rune of air, that would lay on some extra damage for sure! Everytime I put on my set with the air runes I just get frustrated with how short the swiftness is… :P Centaur runes kinda spoiled me I presume.

Also, very insightful on the reflex type game-play you mentioned. The reason I can talk (fairly well) or plan out a strategy while fighting is this. Practice. Thats all. :P

I’m sure many of you will agree, but it’s almost like the skill cooldowns are running in my head (if I like it or not) and you just “know” when another skill is ready, even on a different weapon set. More than anything, though, is I watch what is around me. Probably the most important thing to me is being aware of my surroundings, so I don’t get run over by a group I never saw coming. Often, I will be face tanking one opponent, but using my blinks, dodges, and phase retreats in reaction to the three people swinging behind me. (Turn on Free Camera in your general options!)

Also, I keep a close eye on health and conditions. If I’m fighting a group and all of a sudden I notice a big chunk gets taken, I know a heavy hitter has joined the fight, and adjust accordingly.

Xavi,

Yeah I have a few different weapon sets with bloodlust, or accuracy. I switch them up often, depending on what I’m trying to do. So yes sir, good eye bro.

OliverJ,

Hey thank you brother, I am not the best by any stretch of the imagination, but I am getting a better handle on the Mesmer. I have come up against some amazing people, some probably even in this thread! Thanks for following me man, it means a lot.

Mike T,

The fact the you go tunnel vision shows your focus, which I wouldn’t dub a bad thing. It just shows that you dial in! Try to dial in on everything around you… make that tunnel vision just as wide as your monitor is all that’s left, affectively drowning out the nagging wife/gf, co-worker’s, and general real life responsibilities and presto! You got it!

And one more thing to remember, that I think we as Mesmer’s neglect. The third attack on our main-hand sword strips a boon. One more time. Third attack. Strips a boon… it’s so good. You don’t always want to use a leap to blurred frenzy. Especially on a fleeing opponent who has swiftness up. Lock them in place with leap, then start the sword swings and lead them a bit. You will peal off swiftness!

Delofakitten & Kazhiel,

Thanks, yeah that finisher is boss. I’ve used it on so many guardians, as long as you have blink up when the guardian is low on health, you’re good to go, because of the short cooldown from our phase retreat.

Osicat,

Thank you for kind words, ma’am. You have inspired so much of my play style, and I have learned a TON from watching you. I agree about the timing. The Mesmer is so reaction based, that it requires those split second decisions and proper setup. You make it look easy. I have also learned a lot from Andromeda from [ENVY] on the FC server. Emulated your build with WvW weapons and crafted and bought accessories and it gives pretty similar stats. It’s an hilarious build… such good survivability whilst still having hard hitting burst. You can do some silly stuff with it, like fighting big groups when you solo roam. May not kill people as easily as with Shattercat build, but the survivability is sooooo much better. Deceptive Evasion > Illusionary Persona in my opinion. I take both but if you really want 30 points in Chaos, then dropping IP would be my first choice.

I agree 100% with you, Xavi. Taking away Illusionary Persona is going to drop our burst, so you will need a reliable clone generation tactic. If not you will be waiting on cooldown’s for clones… Though, different strokes for different folks.

New to mesmer and loving it. Watching your vids doesn’t exactly make me love her less.

2 things I’ve been wondering about tho is: could you show us your traits? And wich sigils are you using in your armor pieces?

I’m new to 80 (and gw2 in general) so I just got 4 knight pieces, 2 berserker… the AC sword and karma staff+pistol. Running 20/20/0/0/30 atm… Interested in trying out your 0/20/20/0/30 build tho.

Thanks for all the vids!

Traits:

0/20(IX,X)/20(III,X)/0/30(I,VII,XI)

Breakdown:

The 20 points we add in dueling offers some nice critical chance, as well the -amazing- critical infusion minor, and the sharper images miner. Our crits now off vigor for 5 seconds, and has a cooldown of… 5 seconds.. So we are able to dodge… and dodge… and dodge.. Couple this with our clone generation on dodge(X) in the same trait line, and presto! Clone factory while being invulnerable by dodging. Blade training(IX) is a must because I use a one handed sword.

The 20 points in Chaos offers us a couple unique traits. First, the health regeneration minor, and the protection we get on regen minor, synergize well together (though illusionary membrane was ninja nerfed last patch). Now for our first trait in the line, I go with master of manipulation(III). I use blink a lot in combat, for catching people and for getting away. Having it on a shorter cooldown (6 second difference) is invaluable to me. If you know you are going to be toeing the line, go ahead and change this to something else, but for roaming and large group fighting, leave it there. Chaotic Dampening(X) gives us the cooldown on staff, as well as some more toughness. Pimp.

The 30 in our last trait line, Illusions, can be switched up often. For burst damage, I use Precise Wrack(I), Illusionary Elasticity (VII), Illusionary Persona(XI). Again, it’s all situational.

I use all knight’s gear with runes of the centaur.
I use 3 ascended pieces, the ones with Power/Toughness/+Crit damage.
I use the triforge pendant.
Fill in the other two earring’s with whatever you would like more of, damage or toughness or vitality.

Hope this helps a bit. And thank you for commenting.

Davrollen,

Congrats on making the shift. I started out as a berserker mesmer myself, then slowely evolved to what it is today. Once the ascended gear is in place (power/tough/crit damage) and the remaining trinket’s that I listed, the ability to nuke is still there, just takes a bit more of a setup.

When I was running a pure offensive setup, it was nice to be able to smoke a single target, but in WvW you come accross groups of players. I would kill one then be on my back, downed, trying to decoy and use the downed skill’s like a madman… It just didn’t make sense to me. I wanted to be able to handle the group. With this setup, it is possible.

Now couple this build with 4 other people that are a nighmare to bring down, and bingo, something special begins coming to fruition. A small group of players, able to bring down many, like what you and your group are doing.

All the offensive in the world does not matter, because when you are dead, the only skill you have is “choosing a waypoint.”

Gaiawolf,

Condition heavy builds, with my current setup, will trump me. I’ve never came across a Necromancer that has flat out beat me in WvW, mainly because I can extend and let the condition’s fade, heal up, then come back in on them.

A condition bunker Mesmer, the same story, usually I extend and heal, then come back in. If I was forced to duel and stayed within the area, it wouldn’t end too well.

I do not run Signet of Inspiration any longer, not since the new patch which nerfed shattered might. The only time I use it now is on the Jelly Fish boss in fractals, using arcane theivery to take his 25 stacks of might, then signet to give it to everyone else.

You are right about Null Field. If I am certain that I am going to be in a condition heavy encounter, Null field will replace Mirror Images. The chaos armor combo + condition removal is too good. I will also use Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup, as it gives -40% condition duration. Just making these two switches (one utility, one nourishment) and you now have some serious condition resilience.

Amazing videos there! Your survivability is monumental! Care to elaborate on your gear? I’m guessing the build is 0/20/20/0/30, right?

Spot on. I run knight’s gear as well. Weapons I use power/tough/vitality. I use Power,Toughness, Crit Damage trinkets. I keep my crit chance around 40% and crit damage above 60%.

@Seven I was just checking the Trading Post for trinkets. I couldn’t find the ones you mentioned. Did you mean Power Precision and Toughness trinkets with some kind of crit damage gem?

No sir,

Two ascended rings – Rurik’s Royal Signet + Alderbern’s Royal Signet (p/t/crit dmg)
One ascended back piece – Fractal Capacitor (infused) (p/t/crit dmg)
Triforge Pendent
Karka Shell earring
The last earring slot I use the beserker one.

Use those, AC weapons, with a full set of knight’s gear + Master Maintenence oil + The curry butternut squash food, and with a 0/20/20/0/30 setup.

End Result = 2.85k armor, 52% crit chance, 71% crit damage, shatter tank.

What runes and Sigils did you go with Seven?

Superior sigil of Air x2 – One on staff, one on main hand sword.
Superior sigil of Accuracy – On off hand.

Superior sigil of Air offers the greatest damage increase (around 7%) of any sigil. It is especially nice on the staff, coupled with illusionary elasticity (extra bounce on staff attack), all of a sudden the staff packs a punch.

Superior sigil of Accuracy to bring up my critical chance. Currently at 50%ish crit chance with a 71% critical damage. All this spike, while still having 2.8k+ armor… This is the reason I can take on so many at once. My armor is through the roof, and I can still blow things up.

Superior runes of the centaur…

Because… sadly… this is the only form of reliable swiftness we have, that won’t get us caught with a focus in our offhand…

Superior runes of air are viable too. Though I find that the 5 seconds of swiftness isn’t enough to get away or catch large groups when I need too in WvW.

If only I could equip the runes I really wanted, and still have a reliable form of swiftness…

(looks dreamily out the window)

Loved the new video Osicat.

The theif at the beginning.. riposte,mirror,mind wrack… pop.

I especially like how you use the terrain around you, the pillars for line of sight, moving in and out, stagger shattering clones. Great game-play Osi.

@Seven really enjoyed your latest vid. I notice many times after you use torch or decoy that opponents dont immediately come after you. Is this due to culling not working correctly and your mesmer just isn’t visible on there screen yet?

Great eye, Kumakichi.

I think what we are seeing is the culling issue that occurs with thieves that we see so often. I’m also noticing that it becomes more apparent the more people that are around. I’m starting to notice a larger window here when I am completely visable (no invis buff) yet the enemy doesn’t see me because I haven’t rendered on their screen.

This is giving a me more time to attack and still be untargetable.

Hopefully anet is working on a fix.

@Puffendorf:
It’s also a top-notch defensive weapon no matter what damage type you spec for. Yeah, condition mesmers get more out of the staff in most situations, but Seven is obviously mostly a shatter mesmer that uses staff for defense/utility to set up powerful shatters.

@Seven: Great vids, btw. Very inspiring. I particularly love the torch vid. Looks like a lot of fun.

Gaiawolf is spot on here. It’s my get away stick. :P I use it for chaos armor and the phase retreat like a madman. Also, I stack a high crit + crit chance, couple that with illusionary elasticity, and an air sigil, and presto. Staff can lay on some damage.

Thanks Gaiawolf.

Great guide Lilyfay. Very informative and a really nice unique angle on mesmer game-play. There are a lot of moving parts here: this is definitely one of the more advanced mesmer build’s, requiring a lot of timing and foresight to be properly setup before encounters.

I like it.

Ah thanks for the kind words. I love moments like these though, were you feel indestructible. Nothing can stop your momentum… Then you find yourself on your back because you chased a group into protective siege…

Vexien.4790:

Thank you. At times it seems that the larger the group I’m fighting the easier it is to juke. It’s like mob mentality takes hold and everyone just follows whoever is ahead in the pack… Too much going on for them to really focus.

If this would have transpired against one or two skilled opponents, I’m not so sure it would have ended the same way.

My goal here is survivabilty while still having a high impact shatter or having a hard hitting phantasm. In WvW, running into group’s of players is a common occurance, so below I have detailed a survival build that allows a Mesmer to handle said groups. The traits and gear are listed below if you find yourself liking the playstyle of a certain video.

The versatility of the Mesmer is amazing. I am constantly switching traits and weapons, going from a shatter spec to a condition damage tank. It’s not how you trait yourself, it’s how you play with what you have.

I’m a firm believer that any build on any class can dominate in the right hands. I hope these video’s provide a small source of entertainment for those interested. Enjoy my fellow Mesmers!

I love the feeling of finding a group that just “works.” When everyone is on the same page, build’s feeding off one another, and having a ton of fun while it’s all happening, makes for one amazing gaming experience.

Fine vid, but I do think you could greatly benefit from some more toughness with your sort of play style.

I’ll always welcome more toughness,

Current build has:

3k+ attack
45% Crit chance, 58% Crit damage
2.8k Armor

I wanted to highlight some of the reactionary play-style that Guild War 2 has. I’m playing a Mesmer here, though this kind of game-play could be used for anyone’s character. Saving cooldowns for the right time, holding on to dodge until you need it, keeping the right distance that takes advantage of the build you’ve chosen, et cetra. Great fight with the D/D Elementalist from [RED].
