Keep your pet on passive it will save you a lot of headaches in the future. Also I think your confusing Quickness(faster skill use) and Swiftness(faster run speed).
Getting to 80 fast is great, but I think you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not experimenting with all the Ranger’s different weapons, skills, and traits on your journey to 80. Solo leveling as a Ranger isn’t to difficult because the pets can hold aggro, heal, bring utility and dps. I think most of us Ranger’s would agree that learning to manage your pets and keep them alive and fighting is one of, if not the most important thing you can learn.
GS is slower but Maul hits hard, and Swoop is pretty good for gettin outta trouble.
I ran a LB and S/D with traps when I was lvling. Thinned out mobs with barrage finished with traps, had good fun with it.
You can have a lot of fun with a Ranger. However, there is no build that can do it all. You have to gear, trait, and choose appropriate pets for the role or game type you wanna play. There’s a lot of Rangers out there that are successful in different things.
You’ll get better advice from the community about builds if they know what you want to do with your Ranger. Solo level, dungeons, fracs, wvw, spvp, etc.
Check out this thread. There’s several good post Dec 10th builds in there.

One Shot, One Kill- A sniper shot on the LB that’s similar to a Warriors Killshot.
Why must people label and categorize everything. These are chains that hold us back from our true potential. Does the Lion care that we call it a Lion, no, it just survives, thrives, and dominates it’s plot of land it desire’s to call home. I am whatever you want to call me, and I am none of those things. I just am and I will just be. Freedom my brothers and sisters, that’s what a Ranger is.
You’ve come at a good time for those weapons.

I thought ranged weapons were a bad choice for spirits, because it puts you out of range of your party, so they don’t receive the buffs as reliably (I need to check they range of the buffs to be sure). Also the spirit actives work best when your close to the target.
SB has 900 range max, spirit effects is 1000.
Axe has 900 range max (trait), spirit effects is 1000.
LB has 1800 range max (bugged manual fire), Spirit effect is 1000
Ah ok ty.

I’ve had some fun with traps, entangle, and whirling defense in wvw. Lure them in using your bow (they’ll think you are glassy) I prefer the sb to get them to pop condition cleanse and stun breaks. They hit your traps, you pop entangle and whirl for face melting fun.
I’m not saying something didn’t change, but I went back and looked at some of my videos from a week or so ago and the damage looks relatively the same.
Hmmm. Well that’s discouraging. Hopefully we can dig up some more data or get a response from Anet.
Yeaaah. I didn’t notice it and I played plenty last night after this post was made.
Good, maybe I can try out the LB again without feeling guilty.
Ranger easy mode? From a warrior? lmao now I’ve heard everything.
Rangers of the world unite!
That’s pretty awesome. Thanks for the uplifting thread.
The solution I see to that is make the pet trigger the attack only if the target is at around 30~50% of the attack radius (those numbers may be tweaked), for example if an attack have a reach of 120 then the pet only attack if the target is at 35~60 of distance, so if the target moves there is a bigger chance of that attack actually land.
This seems like a really great idea to implement and test. I’ve also noticed that the pet seems to start it’s attack sequence as soon as it’s in range (really noticeable with leaping attacks).
SBI has never had a strong NA day presence. We’ve lost plenty of matches in the past because we couldn’t keep up during those times. On top of that we have a good lead and as the week progressed less people play WvW.
I think u had to get into wvw on day one of the season for that achievement. It has zero ap if I remember correctly.
I use the Xboxe360 Controller.
Not everyone plays on Keyboard and Mouse.lol
Me too! Also, I don’t think it really matters what controls you use.
It actually does matter what controls you use.
The Controls you are most comfortable with and can play well with is clearly the right choice! =)
lol right on

Got some more Ranger Video of mostly this matchup
Inspiring ranger vids. Your swordplay (and all around play) is top notch. S/D (aka the blade dance) is so much fun when played right.
Every class can be good and useful in the right player’s hands.
Know your role build around it and have fun.
I can’t speak for the server, but my guild and the ones we partner with in wvw regularly love to fight Yak’s Bend. You guys are scrappy as hell and we make it a point to show class and respect to all our opponents. You will never catch one of the [OLD] crew teabagin’ or some dumb emote. We do bow and salute occasionally to honor the fallen.

Are owls passé?

Lol your owl looks like it photo bombed you.
He didn’t say it was garbage. He said it’s best used at long ranges which could limit your ability to give and receive boons in groups that aren’t also ranged focus. All in all it was informative and new rangers will def benefit from it.
Edit: On a side note, he’s comments about active pet management are dead on.

Good points Eurantien. And that’s kinda what I meant. Thanks for elaborating. (not sarcasm)
If they could just evade when I do that alone would increase their survivability by a ton.
I’ve played my ranger since day one and he is still my main. However, a few months back a rolled a char war just to try it out, and it was incredibly easy to level. I also tried him out in spvp and wvw when i got to 80 and it truly is easier to get kills and stay alive. That’s just my personal experience. I still do great with my ranger (win plenty of 1v1 or 1v2 with him), but I have to work harder.
Idk i like the torch for some things. I can set the ground on fire switch to a short bow and shoot flaming arrows with poison, bleed, or cripple on them. Can be pretty sick in a condi build.
In a zerg the best place for your pet is by your side. Put them on passive so they don’t charge into cc etc and melt. You really don’t need the damage from them, that’s what the zerg is for. I like to use my brown bear because he has shake it off and a lot of health. So u can actually pull condis from your group them shake em off. I really only tell him to attack runners that break off the zerg since they’re usually low on health and away from most of the aoe and what not. He can finish them and return to my side while I’m attacking other targets or supporting. You just have to be more tactical about pets in wvw. Good luck out there
