Ashen Mistwalker: WvW Tank/Crit Revenant
Oaken Earthlore: WvW Medi/Bunker Guardian
Just start the fire field, then suck them into it, then lock them down and commence the beatdown.
Sylvari is my favorite race, so I’m a little biased. I played a human guardian for over 1,000 hours before creating a Sylvari guardian and rushing 80 just for the aesthetics. I am extremely happy with my Sylvari’s looks.
My armor is mostly T2 cultural with Mawdrey and crimson ascended sword/greatsword. I use the Anomaly as my focus skin.
If someone chooses to slot the same racial on both bars, why not just make it share the same cooldown on swap? If they use it and swap, the cooldown would continue from the previous legend. It wouldn’t make them any more powerful, and if someone would slot it on both bars it would just waste space if it was used. It adds some customizability and flavor to a class that has very limited changeability. It’s not like any of the skills are really game breaking. But it is a fun piece to have.
New Ranger pets? Or maybe Druid will allow us to tame other species?
After all the goodies that they pulled off with the Scrapper, I actually have some hope that the Druid will be pretty great! If my hope falls through, I always have the Revenant Glint/Shiro combo already specced out and gear waiting.
Originally I was all about Valor/DragonHunter/Virtues on my Guardian.
After the first beta and trying Revenant, I was certain i was staying Guard and possibly not taking DH at all.
After Beta2, though, Shiro/Glint Crit build with Hammer/SwSw was an absolute blast. I’m about 90% certain I’m going Revenant with HoT. I won’t be deleting either of my 2 80 Guardians, but I will be making a new Rev since I got 2 slots for pre-purchasing. No way I’d give up the +1 birthday rewards since they change each year.
The only wildcard is Druid. IF it could possibly be as cool as it could be. I may dabble there a bit.
I guess on the opposite side of the spectrum, I’ve caused some pretty cool deaths. lol. Luring people to very high and obscure places and then punting them off the edge with Banish is ridiculously fun.
I’ve knocked people off of cliffs and they land on a small ledge with nowhere else to go. They have no choice but to jump or waypoint. (most jump due to being in combat and not being able to waypoint)
Almost as much fun as the good ‘ol days in WoW and Mind Controlling people and running them off the edge. Altar of Storms was a blast! (I think that’s what the battleground was called. Lots of purple and nothing but oblivion once they are off the edge.
Just a few days ago I was in WvW with my Guardian. After knocking a door down and charging in, I was hit by a teleport and it put me back into the doorway where I fell through the ground and continued falling into light blue oblivion for 15-20 seconds before smacking dead into more blue nothingness. It was pretty, but really put a damper on my ability to smash faces like I was planning on doing
I’m imagining the Druid will be like a 3 attunement Elementalist. Each “aspect” will change the abilities of the Glyphs you get. The Bear rotation will be your low damage/high mitigation/healing abilities. The Wolf aspect will be medium damage/control abilities. The Bird aspect will be High damage/speed/condition abilities.
The Staff will be a generic close to mid range weapon with some nature inspired abilities like Swoop, Maul, Viper’s Bite, Hornet’s Sting, etc. I imagine an Earthquake/slam ability for knockdown, a cripple ability, and MAYBE a multi hit ability. We’ve already seen the viny/mid range ability that likely snare/cripples. If they don’t change it completely. (like all of the spear stuff we’ve seen in the videos).
I’m guessing the traits will be geared toward each “aspect” to buff them up also.
I’m secretly hoping it turns out great! I love playing Ranger and have always played druid-like characters revolving around nature abilities. I have been locked into Guardian and Warrior because they are more efficient at what they do. I would like a reason to play Druid and not just jump to Revenant like I feel like I’m going to do.

I agree with next week and the following week being the reveal for the Forge and Druid. Follows a regular pattern and puts them on pace to do another Beta weekend the first weekend in October. I’m looking forward to Druid and I wish deep down that it would be a great class, but we’ll just have to see. If it isn’t awe-inspiring, I’ll be maining a Revenant for sure. I had a ton of fun this weekend.
Yeah, if Revenant goes live in a similar capacity to what they are currently, my jump start 3+ year old guardian will be naked and all his pretty ascended gear will be on a new Shiro/Glint Rev. I’m sad,, especially since I leveled a second guardian just to be a Sylvari. I have a whole new enjoyment during this beta.
I ran around earlier today in a combination Shiro/Glint crit build that was built around the fury + extra effectiveness fury traits. Hammer/Sw/Sw. Stay ranged and drop mega hammers at 3k-5k damage, if they rush you switch to Sw/Sw and Shiro and decimate them with 20 stacks of vuln/unblockable/100% crit chance. All while having 26k health and 3100 armor.
The heal I found to be amazing. Think of the utility of the Guardian Shelter, only it lasts twice as long and heals you every time they hit you.
I won a couple 2v1’s. The only thing I wish it had was Stability and a better way to handle conditions.
I swapped to Corruption with condi sharing and it helped some, but crippled the crits
I agree that the name isn’t overly representative of what the specialization actually does. They are more Dragon – minion hunters. Not necessarily the Dragon itself, just all of the minions of said beast. I haven’t used Longbow at all yet, so I have no input there. I’m playing around with my specialization and current build for solo havoc/roaming in WvW (my primary playground).
I took the DH line just for the boosted Virtues and still GS/Sw/F for now, but will soon be trying it with GS/Ham. I find the virtues to be nice. They can be both offensive or defensive in nature. 1 is use on cooldown and stay in range, 2 can be offensive leap/heal/damage or retreat/heal or group support splash heal (~3500hp). 3 can be used to charge a ranged class without eating too much damage or can be used to buffer your health while waiting on a cooldown or support. I’m really enjoying the playstyles it provides and I really like the Judgement Light trap. revealed + 20 stacks of vuln on someone that’s speared and getting an extra 10% damage from spear is crazy, and i’m not even a bursty build.
I know it’s no major feat, but I used the maw elite and judgement trap and completely bursted down a dps Rev in seconds. Not bad for a 3200 Armor/20k health/2100 Atk Guard with mostly Celestial/Soldier gear.
I overheard some…“things” about sylvari in the beta map. you noticed anything different ?
I haven’t played much, the initial couple scenarios and then lost connection. Came back and have been playing with Shiro skills and sw/sw on a Rev. I do recall your character and “another” sylvari character shouting things along the lines of “do you trust me now?” when you perform abilities. I’m definitely going to spend some time on it before time runs out, but I’m really liking what I’m seeing so far.
I vaulted all my ascended armor on my current guardian, created a beta sylvari guard to go DH with. Specced him out and went to facetank all the weenies that came after me. . . . 3 seconds into the fight I was bleeding out and going “WHA?!!!” I respawned and took a more delicate approach, never had an issue since. No more mindless 133314233214142132141232147483948172849912, you have to actually try! It’s great! PvE content that actually makes you better at your class is a VERY welcome change. Smashing your face into your number keys is pretty bland, but when you get spanked for doing it, you learn pretty quickly!
Great Job! Loving the changes!
I roam 90% of the time on my Guard. The only time I’m not roaming is to recap the home BL or finish daily keep capture. I can solo towers 75% of the time if no defense shows up.
I still run a hybrid Celestial/Soldier/Cleric meditation build with GS/Sw-F. I can hold my own against about anything that isn’t a mesmer as Dark said. I have a ton of condi removal and blinds, so anything melee or condi I do fairly well against. Traveler runes are a must unless you want to run Staff and get your move on that way, but your DPS suffers a lot.
My build hasn’t changed much at all with the trait changes. I lost vulnerability on blind (running 5 blinds could stack it pretty high for a nice DPS boost), and no dodge-heal to go with my energy runes. Currently running Radiance as my third slot, but may go Dragonhunter I think for the boosted Virtues and dps boost to speared enemies. I’m not sold 100% on that, though. I may run this guard the way he is and run a DH/Trapper on my human guard.
My build, if you’re interested.
Excellent writeup and overview. Keep this up top and visible. I’ve been playing your Marauder Staff Mallyx/Jalis build in WvW today and it does surprisingly well with some support around you. You aren’t incredibly “bursty”, but you can at least deal a little damage. I split the gear between Valkyrie and Assassin with Traveler runes. You still melt like butter on a tin roof, but at least you can do 6-8k damage before you go.
Hopefully the devs read some of this and take it to heart, a lot of these proposed changes would go a long way toward helping the Revenant class.
About 15 years ago I played my first MMO, DAoC. I couldn’t think of a name at all to start with, so I made a play on my RL name, Jeffrey, and came up with Jephrei. I used that name for about every mage character I’ve ever made. I have numerous iterations of the name for many other characters. (Jeph, Jepholas, Jephiir)
I eventually decided to play on my own name and Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) and came up with Jephiroth. (Clone mesmer)
I’m a paramedic and one company that manufactures ambulances is called Traumahawk, which I really like. I’ve also been a falconer, so the name is really appealing to me. It is my rangers name.
I got on a Sylvari kick and my current two most played characters are Oaken Earthlore and Ashen Nightblade (guard and warrior)
Rotspore just happened to come to me one day, so I made a Necro with that name.
My engineer that rarely sees any time and is only level 68 is Mechgineer Lugnut. It’s a name that just came to me one day also. A boy once told me “you couldn’t fix a Lugnut if you had to” while working on a vehicle with my uncle. My uncle got a huge kick out of it and would call me Lugnut. He passed away a few years ago, so it’s nice to have that name.
My thief is named Hyde Moor, because I made him during the time you could be permanently stealthed.
Name selection is usually pretty hard for me, but there are several I really like.
I may try valor/virtues/DH, but I’ll likely stay valor/virtues/radiance. I really like my 5 blinds and meditations.
My other guard may become a DH/radiance/virtues sinister bow hammer trapper, but I’m not sold on that yet.
I play a Hybrid Do-all guardian GS/Sw-F (Celestial armor, Soldier weps, half Cleric trinkets, all ascended) Valor222/Virtues223/Radiance111 (Swapping Radiance for DH323 with HoT)
I was really looking forward to this skill because I was a huge fan of the Tome. I would alternate between Courage and Wrath in WvW just because it felt “rewarding” to pop your Elite Tome and become a support guardian or a budget caster with decent range and speed on your nuke.
In practicality, the Signet is very lackluster. It’s great for personal use if you don’t plan on ever using the active ability, but as far as supporting your group, it’s a big letdown. In the time you blow a Stability (F3 typically) and cast it, the reason you’re needing to cast it is still beating your face (and your allies) for 4+ seconds of damage.
My proposed fix would be to increase the radius to at least 600, reduce the cast time to 3s or leave it at 4.25 and remove the root component.
I guess on the bright side, we can look forward to the Tome Elite Specialization in a few years?
Traveler runes are the only way to fly. Unless you run Staff. I went traveler about 2 years ago and have never looked back. Now I run it on my Ranger and Mesmer as well. I primarily WvW, so they are a nice little buff to Golem speed also.
You shouldn’t have to change gear at all, just select the fall damage trait and slide down the right side. You’ll get caught on the stalagtites on the way down and end up with about 10% HP. You’ll autoheal back to 100% and you can jump in the middle and slide into the pool of water at the bottom.
I prepurchased the ultimate edition the night it was announced.
And now I’m getting a bonus character slot.
3 years of entertainment, 2000 hours of fun, 7 80’s and a 68, and now two bonus slots for new enjoyment!
Am I supposed to be upset? or happy now?
Here he is without wings
I just stumbled across this post, thought I’d add my character.
This is my Sephiroth, Mesmer of course, for the clones. Most of the time I go without my wings, but occasionally turn them on.
Maybe they’ll create a 2-hand Axe and only give it to Warriors, then add elixirs, aka “steroids”, and call them Berzerkers.
Melee staff and meditations, Monk. They can already do everything else, might as well give them something cool!
My first character from pre-release was a human guardian. I really liked the looks of Sylvari and always secretly wished my guardian was one. After several more 80’s and a handful more Sylvari, I finally decided to level a Sylvari guardian. A handful of gold, some tomes of intelligence, and a day later and he was born. Been running him through the paces the last couple months and I’m happy all over again. Now he’s suited up in a new build that I’ve been tweaking and all ascended gear.
Been running this build for the last couple months with pretty substantial success. It is a WvW build that incorporates all of the “stat minimums” that I wanted.
2000 base attack
3000 toughness
17500 health
25% crit
xxx Healing power (undecided, but ended up getting over 600)(dodge rolls and Medi heal)
xxx Condition Damage (not a huge deal, but some is better than none)
It uses mostly Celestial and Soldier gear with some Cleric’s in the mix. I just crafted my last piece of Celestial Ascended to finish it off.
Traits are for reducing recharge on Medi’s and Medi’s healing, bonus to precision from toughness, reduce recharge on shouts (Stand Your Ground for Stability), and bonus damage to burning foes.
This build also comes with 4 on-demand blinds (VoJ, Leap of Faith, Flashing Blade, Ray of Judgement)
Traveler Runes for bonus movement speed, Food for damage reduction/Condi reduction against pesky control classes.
And it leaves room for you to personalize a little. Renewed Focus can easily be taken for the Tome, I only use the Tome to melt people that are annoying (lots of people don’t realize they’re being nuked by a Guardian) Spam 1 until they get to 30% or so, then do 4/5 quickness/Judgement for the huge 3k+ knockdown, then finish them off with another chain of 1’s.
You can also swap Retributive Armor for Purity if you need more condition removal. Or use it for your second form of removal and take Shelter over the signet for the heal.
Tomes are definitely needing help, but I’ll miss having them if this change takes place.
Not that the changes are bad at all, both look like great alternatives. I just enjoy using them on occasion.
I have a pretty decent build that I sometimes swap Tome of Wrath in for in WvW. Nothing makes me smile more than a pesky kite/stealth/clone/etc player that I can pop my tome and nuke them down before they realize what’s going on.
It isn’t much useful for anything else, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. Judgement is downright killer also. I just spam 1 on top of them until they get to 30% or so, then quickness/judgement to stun and finish them while knocked down.
Hopefully when the Tome’s return, they come back to the Guardian so I can get some of that enjoyment again.
Here is my Mesmer, Jephiroth. He’s a play on Sephiroth of course, so he makes lots of clones with big swords and plays with his dark materia on occasion.
Hey everyone, long time reader, first time poster.
I’ve been running my Guardian for a while now and absolutely love the class. I’ve tried just about every variation of a build, from Zeal/Symbols and Healway to Radiance/Fury and have finally settled on this one. I’ve been running it now for the past couple weeks and have been having really good success.
I ran the 0/0/10/30/30 Shout/Healway build for a long time, but felt like I needed more damage output and utility. I didn’t have many escape tools or control abilities to handle the soft cc’s that are prevalent on just about every encounter. I even ran variants of 10/0/0/30/30, 0/10/0/30/30, 10/10/0/30/20, and just about everything else. lol. I haven’t ventured into ascended weaponry yet, nor have I tortured myself for Legendary equipment, so I’m stuck with exotics across the board, except for laurel purchases/trinkets.
The goals I had in mind were:
~16k health
~1900 power/3000 attack
~1200 Healing Power
~3200 Toughness
200+/sec heal passive
~1500 dodge roll heal
Ability to easily transform into a group/support role without doing a complete re-trait.
I eventually settled on:
I have 2 teleports, 2 stun breaks, stability, plenty of retaliation, cleanses, damage, burns, blast finisher, 2 whirls, and a leap. I can combo myself for cleansing bolts or retaliation, I have 3 blinds, and can easily swap a few traits to pick up symbols heal/larger or Alturistic Healing/Shout. I carry a weapon of every type, all with identical stats and sigils, so I can mix and match as I see fit.
In its base form, it is a self sufficient, solo/roamer/havoc build that has yet to let me down. I can spank fully upgraded camps, stand toe-to-toe with multiple foes, and have permanent 25% runspeed!
Valor: 30pts I/()/XII You can pick whichever trait you like for the other trait. Personally, I like +150 Toughness or cleanse/10s.
The combination of Meditation cooldown/heal(Valor I/XII) nets me a teleport/burn/2500pt heal instantly. I can use it offensively or defensively as a gap closer or escape tool (bunnies and ambient critters beware!). The cooldown is a little high, but if I use it early, it’s ready again by the time the fight is over. Secondly, Smite Condition, with reduced cooldown, is only 16 seconds! You get that same 2500pt heal as well as Area Effect damage that increases if you use it as a cleanse (why else would you use it?).
Honor: 20pts II/IX
Reduced Shout cooldown for Stand Your Ground and reduced recharge on 2h weapons. More Greatsword, More Whirl, More Blind, More win! Greatsword is such a well built weapon on the Guardian. It’s hard for me to stray away from it. Stability/Retaliation in shout form, also a Stun Break. One of my favorite abilities, affects allies, and a fairly short cooldown to boot!
Virtues: 20pts II/IX or X
More retaliation, I really wish I could pick both IX and X in this line, but I just can’t manage to give up the other lines. I switch between Absolute Resolution and Indominable Courage quite a bit. Sometimes I will run more DPS food and run AR, or run IC and run Mango Pie. I just can’t decide. Having on-demand stomp protection that is rechargeable with Renewed Focus is just too nice. Especially in outnumbered fights.
This build has been serving me well, so I thought I’d share.
Let me know what you think!
