They cannot simply come on here and say, “Oops… OK. Maybe that wasn’t so smart. Let us talk about it and we’ll get back to you.”
No, but they can say:
“We recognize that the final stage of the event did not run as smoothly as originally anticipated. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused, and are in the process of developing a solution which will allow those who missed out on the event (whether through disconnections, time zones, server maintenance, ect) to have another opportunity to experience the event and it’s content.”
Ect ect ect. This would go a long way.
Make it so that the event runs for another 24 hours or so, and the big chest at the end can only be opened ONE TIME per account.
This would resolve an overwhelmingly vast majority of the complaints and disgruntled players.
I’m not saying they won’t. In fact, I hope they do say something of the kind. But I don’t feel they can do it so quickly.
If there’s nothing within a few days, I’ll be a sad puppy. Until then, I’ll hope they will.

Sure they can. In fact a message like that would go a long way.
Then maybe we’ll get lucky and that’s what they’ll say. But no one is going to say anything without some careful consideration.

P.S. an equalization of rewards and game face time needs to be made to the players. Well ANet we are waiting for your response to this mess. Last thing we want to see is some post on how well things went. Ball is in your court.
This.
I’ve noticed that no one in ArenaNet is saying anything about this in a constructive manner. Most threads here don’t have an official response, and those that do are just reminders to stay on topic or some other non-committal nonsense.
I want to know what ANet learned from their failings and I want to know how they plan to adjust to customer feedback.
And I want to know now.
Assuming that ANET even agrees there was a problem, it may easily take some number of days before they decide what to do about it. First, they have to decide how to even broach the subject.

Give them a few days and see what comes up.
I also missed the event due to other obligations. I had just enough time to discover phase 1 was bugged and I ended up doing almost nothing. I’m disappointed, but mostly for simply missing the content. While I would have loved to have all that extra money… I’m not in it for the money grind, but for the story, the immersion, etc.. I’m sorry I’ll have to watch it all on YouTube instead of having experienced it for myself.
I’d prefer not to have short-term one-time events. It seems to me that they could just be one-time for each account (or character). But then there’s be significant balancing issues… a zerg here, 6 people there. Oh.. I don’t know.
Still.. sad I missed it.

+a zillion. Well said. Especially not constraining time-limited events to a single day. Usually, I have a couple of hours here and there. Sometimes I can get a whole day. But, if I need about 10 hours of playing time to complete something, it might take me a week to do that.
A weekend, one-time event, is not friendly for the casual player with family, kids, picnics, soccer, homework, etc. (Honestly, I have more time to play during the week, evenings, than I do on the weekend.)

Honestly… I’d really prefer a month, but I suspect that kills the flow for people once they’ve finished it. And, I can see ‘rewarding’ active players. Still… three days seems too short.

Ok… I realize (and like) the idea of a changing world… single event occurrences and the such.
I have limited time to play. I reserved a few hours to try to get as much done as possible and I get on and find several bugs. Ok. It happens.
I think, perhaps, a single weekend is simply not long enough. I’d like to suggest a minimum of a week for these kinds of things.
Thanks for the consideration.

I’m also having this problem. I will refrain from doing it manually to allow you to try things out. I have an iPhone 4S, running iOS6.
I used the scanner built into the Google Authenticator app and the token it reported as being invalid properly included both my email address and the secret that was displayed. Those were both correct.
