I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re not even in the game at all and this is just trying to save face.
I think some people are totally missing the point of the type of goal ascended gear is supposed to provide.
It provides an LONG TERM end game goal related to character progression, infact is the only end game goal that offers a stat progression instead of aesthetics. The materials needed to get it encourages play throughout all areas of the game.
The 3 ascended materials for obsidian refinement you can earn doing world bosses, dungeons, fractals, world vrs world, and killing champs/opening chests any where in the open world.
Having max crafting, something that most of use used throughout our leveling process now offers a continuation for end game. They would have a hard time adding armor acquisition methods outside of drops to other areas of the game because crafting acts as a time, effort, and money gate.
Materials of all tiers that would have to be gathered in all areas of open world, in world vrs world, or via gold through your favorite income producing activities. Even salvaged from items.
It is a grind only if you make it a grind, if you must have it ASAP and the only means you find acceptable to obtain that is the fastest most tedious way possible, and that bothers you, that is not the game’s fault, that is your fault. You are in no way forced to grind out gold and materials in a champ farm or any of the popular farms, nor are you gated from any content from not having ascended weapons and armor.
I for one certainly don’t plan on focusing on obtaining my armor in the first week or even the first month, as I am a die hard anti-farm player. Having already done 3 weapons, I know ascended armor will eventually fall in my lap if I just participate in multiple areas of the game, save, and keep doing what I find fun with my guild.
Long term goal is well and good (but personally, I think ascended is too far up the scale on ‘long term’, it could definitely be easier to get and still be a long term goal) but why gate content behind this “long term goal”? If you’re running fractals, you’ll NEED this armor once the cap goes up.
My friends that barely play the game can’t do high level fractals with my group anymore because agony is such a killer now. Hell, I can’t even do 40 because I haven’t gotten around to grinding for ascended weapon crafting.
LOL you need this armor for fractals? I did not realize all those people that have already hit the level 50 fractals have ascended armor before its out! Its funny to watch people bend over backwards to try to make an argument make since.
You can get as much AR as you need from fractals with rings, accessories, and back peices, especially with the new AR infusions.
AR infusions are a massive gold sink in and of themselves, dude. Unless armor costs THOUSANDS of gold, it will be cheaper in the long run than infusions. Infusions can’t even compete.
Also, yeah, armor isn’t necessary, NOW, but when the cap does get raised? Yeah, you will definitely need it, because infusions are so expensive/time consuming to get that they’re not even worth it.

They become obsolete.
Progression requires the feeling of progress over a period of time. Without the gear check that agony provides, skilled players can reach the end of the current program extremely quickly which eliminates the “feeling of progress over a period of time”. This leads them to become bored and either complain or leave.
Using the gear check, ArenaNet can impose an artificial roadblock to your skill level that forces you to play longer than you would otherwise have played.
You get the enjoyment of having the feeling of progress for a longer period of time, while they get to keep you playing longer, it’s a win-win, which is why it is the system used by just about every MMO to date for PvE progression.
I felt that sense of progression every time I climbed a new level with my friends. I definitely did NOT feel it when I grabbed a new laurel every day so I could wait out the time gate on amulets, and I’m not feeling it now that I need to collect infusions. There’s no enjoyment in grinding past a gear check, but there IS enjoyment in overcoming a challenge with your skill.
PvP should be about skill checks for progression.
PvE should be about stat checks for progression.Fractals are PvE progression, thus the presence of a stat check mechanism.
Why can’t Fractals be skill based? Every agony attack except the agony on the three bosses can be avoided, why shouldn’t you be able to progress if you’re good enough? Agony is just a really lazy time/gold sink, and it really is making fractals a lot less enjoyable.
I used to wind up with low AR people in my groups a lot, but it didn’t matter because I knew they were good and could avoid the agony attacks. Now I can’t do that because if we get Mai Trin or Molten our group is toast.
They made it quite clear last year that the holiday events will largely be the same each year. This has nothing to do with the Living Story.
Also keep in mind all the rage about them having a new story for Halloween this year compared to last.
Anet said the idea was that they’d use holiday (and festival events) as a buffer for releases because they already had a foundation that they could improve on. They didn’t say they’d just reuse the old events and not add anything new.
It’s supposed to be a long term goal. Since there is no content in the game that requires ascended gear just take your time and have fun making it. You will not be alone. You either need gear or infusions to do 50.
Sure the top 5% of players will probably be able to make it right off the bat, but there is no need to do it that fast.
Well, there’s fractals.
Except even fractals doesn’t need this gear currently. They are capped at level 50, and all the agony resistance/Infusion slots you need for that is currently in game. Why they stagger releases like this, I don’t know. They should, IMO, release new Ascended gears when something actually needs it, like raising the fractals cap. Not release the gear with the inclination they might raise the cap a few months from now.
Infusions aren’t really an alternative to ascended gear since they’re still a big gold sink (or time and gold sink)

I don’t think anyone at anet has even posted about fractals since the update hit. They don’t care. It sucks, because there’s so much wrong with fractals at the moment, and they’re not going to do a single thing about any of it. I don’t know why they are so apathetic to fractals and the people that run them everyday. It’s ridiculous.
The actual chests at the end of a fractal (the three and the boss one) feel a lot worse than were. I get more blues and less cores/lodestones now.
Chaotic Storm, did you see the most recent Wooden Potatoes video? The argument that Scarlet is an intentional “story scapegoat” sounds pretty convincing.
To that end, the elder dragons being the focus of the story would be the last thing we should want.
Why? The entire focus of the game’s story was about the threat of Zhaitan. Almost all of the higher level zones have the threat of the dragons present, why not focus on them?
They did it to prevent mimic. Even though when mimic was reported as an exploit they said it was fine and smart use of mechanics. Nice bait and switch by anet.
Mossman spawns on 31, so you can mimic him, but it doesn’t do damage anymore (I think they gave mini-bosses AR), so I’m not sure if this was to fix mimic.
I couldn’t disagree more on 40. It’s a super lazy gear check that’s pointless because we already HAVE gear checks on the bosses. It takes no skill to grind out the AR necessary for 40, and there’s no challenge to it. It’s just dull and only there to encourage people to burn gold on agony infusions.
Wait I need to farm hundreds of fotm 10 before! I am so glad this game rewards me for my farming skills!
I think I am just going to speed up the process by buying thousands of AR at the TP then I will level up by doing only fotm 40/50, instabilities are too difficult.
Oh actually I am going to need some gold… Alright then I am just going to go champion farming (got mad skills for that) and then the TP will pave they way to high Fotm for me! That’s the way to go!You sir, are a next level troll.
@OP… Do a little research and you may find there are other mechanics in place that make level 50 not possible, other than the 70AR required mistlock. Or talk to Minty in game, he knows more about it I believe.
What mechanics are you talking about?
I like the fractal a lot. If they took scarlet out it would be perfect.
I know this sounds REALLY weird given my stance on the prelude to Tower of Nightmares. But I got a feeling this might not be Scarlet. And I don’t think it deals with ley lines – why introduce a story plot that revolves around something that had a 50/50 % chance of being known to players immediately after that reveal? The major aspects of the plots were made months ahead even before development began so the concept for these things would predate the voting outcome in development standards.
It’s not a strong feeling mind you.
I think if we did get the Abaddon fractal instead, the ley lines would have been mentioned there too, somehow.
I did a run last night with someone with low AR in my group last night, and I was worried about getting mai trin/molten for that exact reason. It’s a really crappy mechanic, and it doesn’t add anything to either fight (or Jade Maw, for that matter)
I’ve gotten volcano twice, and it hasn’t happened either time. I think it’s just bad luck. I’m actually curious if it is a bug or not, because it is really annoying.
I don’t know if it’s a bug or intentional, but that’s always been something that happened. It’s really annoying when it does.
Jade Maw and Imbued Grawl Shaman both used to zoom the camera out farther away, but now they don’t. Was this an intentional change, or a glitch? Ice Elemental has extra zoom now, for some reason. Anyone else notice this?
All ANet cares about is […] closing bugs.
Not really sure about that…
Hey, they’re really good at closing bugs if they’re harmless fun and/or beneficial to the player.
Scarlet might not have been in the abadon fractal, but I can’t imagine it being better than Thaumonova. The fractal itself is pretty small, and most of the stuff in it is recycled. Could you imagine an Abadon fractal like that? It’s the same people making it, the fractal isn’t bad because it’s not abadon, it’s bad because there was little effort put in.
Feedback works, but I don’t think you can actually put it on the firestorm since it’s so big. If the projectiles hit a reflect, they’ll bounce back. Mender’s feedback is really useful for the fight because of that. I had trouble on my warrior, but felt it was a lot easier on mesmer, so maybe try that, if anyone in your group has it.
Also, we went for the berzerker first.
This makes me so mad. When they release ascended armor, why bother, if it will end up being obsolete in a future release?
To keep people grinding.
Gnashblade supporters – Please, just give it up.
Your candidate lost. The Abaddon fractal is an idea that will not happen.
Try to enjoy the reactor fractal and move on.Anet will not be making your fractal, as it would come off as giving in to the vocal minority (many may want it, but only few continue to kitten about it several months later). Giving in would set a dangerous precedent for any group that felt their ‘want’ was the most important thing in the game.
At this point, your continued voiced displeasure over the election results (and the shelving of the Abaddon fractal) are actually harming your cause more than helping it.
I voted for Kiel, but it is ridiculous how they did the fractal vote. They shouldn’t be closing off avenues for fractals, and the fact that fractals went basically untouched for months and we get told “okay, you get ONE and ONLY ONE” is just silly.
I agree, however i am very disappointed in the lack of content this patch
One new fractal, that’s it.
This patch might just be the patch with the least amount of new content all year. This would have been the perfect time to add Ascended Armor at the very least.
It’s 3 new fractals (Thaumanova Reactor, Molten Facility, Aetherblade Retreat), 2 new boss fractals (Captain Mai Trin, Molten Berserker + Dredge Firestorm pair) and a story instance (thaumanova again). That’s probably more content than any living story to date, tbh.
Additionally, the new Mist Instability mechanic will add replay value to the fractals that already exist by messing with the gameplay.
I’m glad they’re adding AR and MF as fractals, because I loved both of them, but to be honest, it’s been a year since fractals came out, there really should have been more than one new fractal and two LS dungeons split up into two fractals each.
oh and wait
Fractal Weapon Skins (starting at level 10)
Ascended Rings (starting at level 10)
Ascended Weapons (starting at level 10)
Infused Ascended Rings (starting at level 20)So, no reason to do more than level 10 now, this is getting even better, anet is killing fractals.
All the good rewards used to start at 26, but people still went higher anyway. I agree that resetting the levels is crap, but I don’t care if the rewards get lowered. I never played fractals for the rewards.
The release article says it’s still 50.
And, almost every Television Show, in the entire history, of, Freaking EVER, isn’t on the same Cycle? Is the Joker supposed to not get away? Is Megatron supposed to die at the end of the 13th episode, instead of at the end of the series? Since the Secret research lab blew up, the Zombie outbreak should be automatically over then, right? I guess that everyone lived happily ever after at the end of the first season of [Insert Fantasy/Sci Fi series here]? That’s how T.V. works, at the end of the season/start of the next one, pretty much everything goes back to the status quo, no matter who won the victory at the end of the season, and no matter who the villian was.
Wow so naive. This also worries me who I am talking to – joker, megatron? – how old are you? Plenty of movies have developed. Have you ever watched breaking bad? yeah its the one that got all the awards. Why? Because every session Walt passed a point of no return (its called development). This is why it was so acclaimed. Sure you cheesy sitcom can be cyclical but other movies/tv shows pass a point(Prison Break for example). Maybe I should watch more transformer cartoons to understand where your coming from.
The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad didn’t have a status quo in the same way that a serialized show did, though. At the end of any episode, characters have grown, their relationships have developed, and in general things have CHANGED. No, Walt sticking to cooking is not the same as a show setting everything back to default because it’s serialized. He still changed, everyone around him changed, the story developed. Same with TWD. You don’t need to end the primary conflict (the zombies) to progress the story or to make it NOT serialized. That doesn’t even make sense.
And you see no character development in Guild Wars 2? I still say you guys are all angry because the central character isn’t developing at the pace you want, but nothing more. There’s been plenty of development all over the place with other characters and places.
And one more thing. What do you think Guild Wars 2 is rated? Oh yeah, its rated T for Teen in America. Now, I might not have been a Teen for 6 years, and I am still a fan of many shows and comics that I grew up with, but I think its more Absurd that you guys are Expecting, worse, Demanding, a M for Mature story on the level of Game of Thrones instead of taking it for what it is. That’s actually moving away from Absurd, and more towards “Then why the kitten are you still playing this game? Its obviously not sophisticated enough for your palette?”
You really don’t see much character development, no. Rox is still the exact same “i hope rytlock notices me!” character she was six months ago, Braham, Kasmeer, and Marjory have had a little bit more character development, but then, the main villain, and the actual story itself is in a state of stasis. Scarlet has not changed at all since she was introduced. None of the Alliances have gotten any development despite being the focal point of their respective updates. And the living story and living world are exactly where they were in February. GW2 isn’t a sit com, it doesn’t need to keep their world in stasis and reset it at the end of every episode, but that’s what the living story is.
And no, you don’t need to be “M for Mature” to tell a story that’s not serialized. There have been kid’s shows with an actual story to them, you know. It has nothing to do with being “mature”, and everything to do with not wanting to be lazy with your story telling.
Video game stories aren’t like TV. There really is no reason for it to be super formulaic and serialized. Shoot, the most popular tv shows don’t even do that anymore. Look at Breaking Bad. Was that on the same cycle as the living story? Heck no. There was no “status quo”, every episode developed the story. I know anet specifically referred to using elements from TV shows for story telling, but do they really have to use the same format that saturday morning cartoons use?
Well, you didn’t noticed that I referenced the Walking Dead in my post, which is definitely not a Saturday morning cartoon (and I’m pretty sure its one of the most popular things on television right now). And sorry to say, but, Breaking Bad did follow the same formula, and you saw the main character for the first half of the show, giving his monologue about how he has to continue ‘cooking’, normally mid season, or sometimes at the middle/end of several episodes back to back. If The Walking Dead or Breaking Bad suddenly stopped doing the status quo from time to time (it doesn’t have to be at the end of the season of episode), and went in totally opposite directions, then no one would have watched them. Its why Doctor Who still exists 50 years later, and its why some series like Stargate have lasted so long. There is very few shows that actually break that formula, and I would have to say that, maybe, possibly, Battlestar Galactica is one of the only shows to ever break that pattern, (except for the fact that at the end of the series….well, yeah….)
The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad didn’t have a status quo in the same way that a serialized show did, though. At the end of any episode, characters have grown, their relationships have developed, and in general things have CHANGED. Mantras and the signet of inspiration are the only skills that have any lines at all. I don’t mind if it repeats a thousand times, because that’s literally all we have.
No one wants ascended armor.
Hello, my name is No one.
Why do you want this?
Again… Ascended equipment in general is used for infusion slots. Infusion slots allow us (fractal players) to put in agony resistance in our stats.
More info on Agony in general. Now Agony Resistance is needed for progression in fractals. The maximum cap at the moment is 55 Agony Resistance. This allows us to get to level 50. At level 50 at the moment there’s a cap in place where Agony Resistance doesn’t matter because you will die regardless. That cap was put in place for some unknown reason to us all. With additional 6 infusion slots Agony Resistance will be increased to 85 total. With that in mind, the cap on fractals should be removed and progression will be possible (without doing odd level fractals).
The only problem with Ascended Weapons / Armors is that the stats are slightly higher than those of Exotic status. That being said, makes thus equipment more desirable for everyone that wants to increase their stats, rather than just those that do fractals.
Aside from regular Agony Resistance infusion, the slots can be used for other infusions such as +5 power, +5 vitality, etc. That slight rise in stats along with another slight rise from ascended equipment make it desirable for many elite players basically trying to max out their class output. Aside from that infusion slots can be used for non-combat stats boost infusions such as +20% Magic Find or +20% Gold from monsters. Those infusions make it quite desirable for farmers.
Any way you looking at it, make the ascended armor desirable for anyone looking forward personal increase of stats or gold. But more than anyone, fractal players.
Every single party in the game been getting content for their way of playing. PvP with new maps and matching systems, WvW with new map coming out and constant additions such as map rewamping, wvw seasons, rewards, uprgading, leveling system. And most of all PvE players with new content coming out with every 2 weeks, along with dungeon rewarding, champion farming etc. Us, the fractals players been practically playing fractals since it came out a year ago, and since then it was practically untouhced. Reward system is purely based on RNG as it was since day one. The profitability from fractals is close to none compared to all other ways of making gold. And we had the same exact 9 maps since the fractals first came out.
It is our turn to have some fun.
How does ascended armor provide “fun” in a way that rings, amulets, trinkets, and weapons do not?
If getting additional agony resistance counts as fun, then fractal players have been getting constant updates all years. If it doesn’t, then ascended armor won’t make a difference.
Collecting ascended gear is the one part of fractals that isn’t fun. I remember having to wait for amulets and earrings because it was through dailies/guild missions. That was the worst. It’s just a brick wall on your progression, that really doesn’t need to be there.
No one wants ascended armor. Keep it out of the game please.
Ascended armor is not about PvP, PvE or WvW. If that’s what you think it’s for then yes, it’s not for you at all.
Ascended armor is made for fractals. Stats make no difference, but the infusion slot allows us, the fractal players to advance.
Regardless on what you think of ascended weapons or armors, it’s is purely made with fractals in mind.
In my opinion they should keep the stats the same as the exotics, so people would stop complaining…
Ascended gear is not made for fractals. If it was, you would be able to get more than rings through fractaling. Also, with the cap, ascended armor will be completely worthless, because a few extra AR won’t save you from the jade maw.
I’m so sad. I was having so much fun running in a circle pressing 1 repeatedly, with occasional F’s thrown in to pick up my loot. Now I actually have to play a variety of content to get my payoff. C’mon A-net, just eliminate all the other zones and put 10 champions in a loop in LA and let us run around zerging them. Whaaaaaa! Pleeeeeease!
Nerfing champ bags affects people that don’t do champ trains more than the champ train itself. What’s a few copper less in a bag when you get a hundred of them? Who cares, but for people that don’t do champ trains, and get champ bags at a normal pace, the bags are a lot more worthless than they were before.
I agree, zerging is not fun, but punishing the people that don’t zerg because there is a zerg is just very strange.
My favorite release was first Zephyr Sanctum update. The zone itself was fantastic (please bring it back as permanent content), and the new mechanics were a lot of fun. The whole update was great, with that feeling of exploring something new that none of the updates really had. It was a great update, and honestly, if it stuck around (Why not? If the zephyrites have a trade agreement with LA, it makes sense for them to be sticking around!) it would have justified all the LS hype.
Least favorite is easily dragon bash. Everything bad about the living story in one update. It was a temporary festival with really obnoxious grind achievements, and the dragon skin was ugly as hell. Everything about it sucked. The entire idea behind the festival was bad, and it felt stupid to celebrate beating the dragons when there are still five left.
A lot of updates have been pretty self contained in the world. That is, the update stuff happens, and everything around happens, and they’re entirely separate. A tower in Kessex is raining poison death all over, but for Fort Salma, and the centaurs, and the sylvari camp, and garenhoff, it’s just another day. Stuff like this really makes the “living world” feel artificial and empty. Do you see this as an actual problem worth addressing? Are there any plans to expand on just how much impact the living world has on the actual world itself? A giant tower and a green sky is nice and flashy, but if half the zone is still acting business as usual, it loses a LOT of the effect.
The light armor inquest top is currently bugged so it shows only half of a sylvari’s glow. If you look closely, you can even see where the glow just stops. First picture is the inquest top, with the glitched glow, second picture is with a top that does display the glow correctly. I know there was an armor bugs thread, but anet unstickied it and said to make individual threads, and I figured it was worth making a post, even if it’s really minor.
For sylvari, if you equip the tier 2 warden coat, with the tier 1 arborist pants, part of your glow will disappear. If you look at where the two armor pieces meet, there’s just a solid color where my sylvari’s glow should be. Both armor pieces are transmuted.
people complained they did “20” level 10 fractals with no rings, so they made pristine. now the same people complain they have too many. thats why there shouldnt be a use.
No, it’s exactly why there should be a use. The pristine relics were a step in the right direction, but too little. Let us use them to buy amulets or fractal weapons, or ANYTHING relating to fractals, because they just take up space, and removing them and locking progression behind random chance is not a good solution.
Today, it was the ice elemental adds in the dredge fractal, and the cultists in cliff side. Last night it was the fire elementals in the imbued shaman fight. Each time we’d focus one target to get someone up, the target would die, but they would not rally. I guess they didn’t hit the mob hard enough each time.
If you would normally get a rally, you will be cleansed of Illusion of Life.
In my fractal runs today and yesterday, I noticed my allies were not being cleansed of illusion of life, even when they should have gotten a rally (their target dying). Is it just a buggy skill, or is there something I am missing?
I’ve been trying to use it with my group of friends when we do fractals, but none of us are really sure how it works. Sometimes it works and resses you, and sometimes it won’t. I’m assuming it’s based on killing blow, and not on your target dying (like with the downed state), but I’m not sure. Is that it?
But it is a developing game, it is a finish-able path, but my only complaint is that it shows favoritism towards specific classes (see gw2lfg.com (ARAH P4 NEED HIGH DPS WARRIOR @ SIMIN).
I also see @gw2lfg.com COF1 NEED HIGH DPS WARRIORS and nowhere I can find a plea to nerf that specific path.
You see that because cof is easy to speed run if you have a full dps warrior team, but a full dps team isn’t required to beat it, which is not the case for simin.
Since yesterday I’ve been getting this issue. Earlier today I was able to play just fine, with the occasional spike, now I can’t play at all without getting a spike then a disconnect with error 7:11:3:189:101.
I am on Maguuma, in the midwest of america.
Playing on Maguuma, have been getting random lag spikes that last two days for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute before getting kicked.
Don’t think it’s my ISP, I’m not having network problems anywhere else outside of GW2.
edit: Every time I get kicked, I get Error 7:11:3:189:101

I lost 60 some silver today, from the trading post issues.
I just logged in, and found a whole bunch of the items I was trying to buy (I now have an inventory full of the same item.), so if you guys are missing money, I suggest checking again. Maybe you’ll find your stuff!
