Well not meaning to necro an old thread but it seems like people who were more die hard fans of open world MMO’s tended to like GW2 more, of course there were some outliers. FPS, action game fans not so much it seems like.
I’m curious to see what people’s gaming backgrounds are and to see if there is any correlation to liking GW2 or not.
So, I’ll start…
My gaming background…
I only played WOW for a grand total of 45 minutes before I got bored and closed it. Granted, I never really gave it a chance, but open world MMO’s were never really my thing. I’ve tried others like AION, Aika, Silkroad, etc and never made it far before getting bored…I lasted the longest on Aika online for a whopping 4 days of half hearted gaming. Though I played GW1 for over 6000 hours, that’s not really a open world MMO. It’s a cooperative team based, online RPG game and as such it is very different from the likes of GW2 or WoW. My real background in gaming are the action type games. FPS, 3rd person shooters, action combat games etc… My first game I’ve ever played was wolfenstein 3D (the early 90’s original not the remake), then street fighter series, tekken, soul calibur, doom series, halflife, counter strike, half life 2, call of duty 1-5. I also really liked many of the sandbox games like simcity, and mainly the sims 1-3 and downloading all kinds of mods that I can find to customize my sim’s looks and style. I was also a big fan of the baldur’s gate series, fallout series, and even fallout 3, morrowind, oblivion; with the latter 3 being so moddable you can make you character look like anything you want with any clothing combination possible. But now I’m currently playing two action online RPG’s called Vindictus and Dragon Nest.
Do I love or hate Guildwars 2?
I don’t hate it but i’m really disappointed in it. It is a game that I really wanted to love but at least for me it turned out that I’m not really into GW2.
I don’t mind grind or equipment that seems beyond your reach because you need a lot of gold to obtain it. I’m used to that from playing asian MMO’s. But what I do mind is when that “grind” is boring as hell.
I thought vindictus and dragon nest forums were full of QQ about nexon but the GW2 forum is full of QQ about both the game AND the company. When most of the complaints is about the company mismanaging a game that forum users like then it’s not a terrible sign… the company needs to get it’s act together and fix the servers and stop doing stupid events. When the forum users are complaining about both the game AND the company… then you have problems, because you need to fix both the company and the game.
Anyone remember Richard Garriot’s Tabula Rasa? It was a mediocre MMO that was terribly managed and was eventually shut down…. that could happen to GW2 if the developers don’t do anything substantive. FF14 was a horrible MMO when it was released as a open beta and during official release. But the developers realize the issue and are implementing MAJOR changes to the game to make it better and relaunch the game 3 years later (2013) with a revamped graphics engine, combat, interface, gameplay… everything.
I feel that GW2 needs THAT level of a change to make it last for 5+ years, and actually make it enjoyable.
I’ve basically stopped playing about 2.5 weeks after launch and hitting level 67. Open world MMO’s were never really my thing since they all seem super repetitive and the combat is shallow, slow, and boring. I played GW1 for like 6 years because it was so different from the typical MMO, it’s mainly instanced, and had a lot of depth in the team based combat. I got GW2 because it promised an open world MMO that is completely different from all the other open world MMO’s out there with no grind and minimal repetitiveness… and also because I had like 42 points in my HoM. But it felt like very time i go to a new region, i’m doing basically the same thing for many of the dynamic events, and the dungeons were horribly boring. The combat is extremely simple compared to GW1 and the “action” elements are a throw back to late 90’s action RPG games. I don’t see how this game even comes close to satisfy action combat junkies or strategy junkies. Have I ever felt a rush playing this game even during large boss fights? no. I was bored. In essence this game is in many ways worse than some of the free MMO’s out there in terms of the “fun factor” heck… I even played Aika online for like 2 months, and i thought that was a terrible game…
I’m already back playing first person shooters, RTS games, and action RPGs. Call of duty series, star craft 2, vindictus, dragon nest… At least those games give you some measure of adrenaline and excitement because with CoD, counterstrike, vindictus, dragon nest, milliseconds count… and star craft you need to pay attention to everything at once… and who cares if those games are repetitive? At least I don’t have to just randomly press 1-0, not even look at the screen and win. In GW2, at best I get to press 1-0 in a certain order, at a certain time, move to a certain spot, and dodge occasionally… boring!
Also i hate the character animations. Unnatural, overly smoothed, floaty, and weird combat animations that make no sense what so ever. It’s about as unnatural as someone shooting a gun upside down with their pinkie in the trigger.
I still come back to the forums to see if a new update would entice me to play again since I don’t feel like I got my 60$’s worth of “fun” yet. Instead I find updates that even more people are complaining about….

Probably the most boring fight against a dragon in any game that I’ve ever played…
No, go dual daggers and dive bomb and play suicidal.
Tip: If you spec and play correctly you won’t die and you can actually deal some competitive DPS so that you can get some actual loot.
Yep only 0-1 elite skill per profession is actually useful or better than basic skills. Most times, I’d rather have a utility skill on the elite slot.
And with their stance on not balancing til “meta’s” emerge or w/e excuse I’m not even sure if they see the huge lack of variety/customization as an issue.
With the skill system being a lot more simpler than GW1, metas emerge much more quickly. They could already start balancing but it’s already been more than a month since launch, and a lot of the balance issues were already known since BWE1.
When you have people go back to play free to play, free to buy MMO’s after playing GW2 for a week… then you know there is something wrong.

I havent played the game in what 2 weeks? Ever since i forced myself to level all the way to 80 to see if there was some light at the end of the tunnel. There wasnt.
This game is dead for me until they revamp the combat system to something closer to GW1 so the game has a chance to be fun to play again. And for the love of god, just bring back monks, this breaking trinity thing is just silly. It doesnt work. I said that same thing on guru when it was first announced, but as always anet doesnt listen to reason. Most stubburn developer ever, even in the GW1 days.
I don’t mind them breaking the trinity as long as they do it right. IMO they didn’t do it right. Every instance, every DE, every champion boss, everyone is just running around trying to DPS as much as possible and doing combo fields mostly accidentally rather than by planning. There really is almost no teamwork involved.
Games like Dragon Nest and Vindictus don’t have much of a “trinity” but it’s more rewarding to play support roles and it’s more fun to DPS. Even if I have to repeat a dungeon 10x for exp, or mats, I don’t mind because a dungeon only takes 10-20 minutes max, and the combat is fast paced and pretty fun.
I really don’t think I’m going to make it to level 80… only level 67 and barely playing.
As a Guild Wars 1 player, I really dislike most of this game. If I wanted to play another EQ clone, I’ll just play World of Warcraft.
Reasons for quitting,
1. Weapon Swapping. ( Really miss the load up your skills in town and that’s all you get. If I want to use a Tormented Shield and a Chaos Axe on my Monk I could…)2. Monk went bye bye
Guardian is like a magic warrior with Monk skill names.. I died inside when I saw “Save yourselves” on the guardian…)
3. Removal of Henchmen and Heroes, Really loved running around with my own little possy. If you couldn’t find all 8 for a mission you could bring a hero and do it NP.
4.Removal of Vanquishing, really loved that idea.
5. Charr…. You spend the first quarter of your Guild Wars 1 career learning to hate the Charr. I have the Gwen mentality when it comes to these mongols.
6. I was really excited that an EQ clone wasn’t going to have Tank-Heals-DPS, but once I tried it out it felt really really really awkward. Dungeons in GW2 feels like that awkward moment when your tank and healer dies and the boss is just running around destroying your group as you frantically try to run away!
So needless to say, after a year break, I’m going back to the best MMO on the market. World of Warcraft. Panda’s here I come
I feel this too. It feels like GW1 was overall a better game than GW2. WoW, everquest, LOTR online, rift, and all the other open world MMO’s don’t really appeal to me. I spent over 5000 hours on GW1. I’m only at 100 hours for GW2 and I don’t feel like I gotta get back on and keep playing. I’m not really getting the “fun factor” is this game… DE’s are copy paste boring, hearts are boring, dungeons are annoying and long, personal story reads like it was written by a high school student, combat is shallow,…. the overall feeling of this game just feels like “meh”
The personal story for me is the same experience as most of you. Full of overdone cliche, unbelievable characters, B-movie dialogue, and completely predictable storyline.
I have seen story, character, dialogue done in a MMO setting that was way more believable and makes you care about the characters. I don’t care about any of the characters in GW2. If they die in the story line, I don’t care. The story doesn’t make me want to care because I never got to know any of the characters enough to want to care.
With an instanced system of the personal story there was so much potential to make the story system more akin to a traditional RPG rather than a MMORPG. Story with depth like the mass effect series, baldur’s gate series, final fantasy series… Heck even Vindictus, Mabinogi, and Dragon Nest have excellent story lines compared to GW2. They have characters that are memorable, distinct, unique, and through the story line, you really start caring about the characters. I played FF7 over 15 years ago, and yet I still remember the characters because they were THAT memorable. When I saw FF7 advent children 13 years after I played the game, I didn’t need a refresher about who the characters were because I still remember them. When these characters face peril, death, tragedy, it makes you want to cry because you’ve become emotionally invested in the characters so much. When something great happens you feel happy too.
To be fair some of the Vigil story line is okay. Just not good or great, but everything else just felt like… did the writers even try? I’ve read GW fan fiction that was way better than this.
As for the voice acting… it’s terrible and cheezy. Player character voice overs during combat is just NO… makes me cringe every time I hear it so I play with the sound off.

I play because it’s fun to play even if I don’t do a lot of damage or have survivability. But in comparison, my guardian, thief, or necro absolutely rapes PvE. So I can’t really say if guardian, theif, warrior, or necro, are just OP or that ele is just really THAT underpowered.
For ele I stay dual daggers with attributes in earth for increased survivability, and spam PBAOE all day while circle strafing things. I usually die like once every over day or less, and maxed my monthly survivor achievement already, and I solo a lot of events since at level 60+ there still isn’t that many people around. But dual daggers is high damage and fun to play but it’s really hard compared to playing guardian… Staff damage is pathetic in comparison, and scepter/focus is meh but I do use it when melee range is unfeasible.

Maybe I’m human centric or something but I don’t want to play any of the other races. :P
^This
It also doesn’t scale exp gain much at all. It’s kinda pointless to go to a 1-15 zone as a level 60+ and play there. All the loot is going to be crap.
I also want to add that an option so that you don’t have to have the right mouse button pressed to move the camera would be nice.
Like using the ctrl button to toggle the mouse from camera view mode/click mode.
Could I get banned for using AutoHotkey to toggle the right mouse button?

Coming from dragon nest and vindictus, I hold down the right mouse button 100% of the time during combat. It’s pretty annoying to not be able to use the left/right mouse button for other purposes…. and after a while it kinda cramps your hand.
Dragon nest and vindictus had the ctrl key or the esc key as the mouse cursor/view toggle. Having an option for that would be amazing.
Just sold my mystic coins on the trading post and my coins disappeared and no money delivered. It doesn’t show up on my transaction log either.
oh wait nevermind, it looks like it went through… just took a while
Make sure your video card drivers are completely up to date. Visit www.nvidia.com or www.amd.com whichever you have. My video card is overclocked by 10% and my CPU overclocked at 4.1 Ghz and I’m having no problems.
