Ranger is my only 80 character and I think I will never play him again. I’ve loved playing my ranger but its becoming a joke now. Rangers have to try twice as hard as the next class in roaming, and zerg fights we have to be masterful to have the same effect other classes have.
You debuff our one and only significantly cool trait in EB.
You take away a major mechanic of ours in sending pets up or down the walls. HOW THE kitten CAN MY EAGLE NOT FLY FIFTEEN FEET UP AND HIT HIM???
You give us a boost to a single weapon skill on a weapon set that is completely counter intuitive to our major builds.
How did you decide to nerf what is already consider a joke class? I honestly want to know the process. Who at the table really stood up and said “Man those rangers and their only two viable builds are just way overpowered”?
You didn’t balance kitten. You severely weakened our most useful aspects, and boosted something we didn’t even remember had because it sucks that hard.
A true failure by Anet here, an unforgivable kittening failure. How you can even fathom nerfing ranger significantly and buffing ele/thief to be considered “balance” is beyond me.
Get a new team who’s actually played the game for five minutes.

That nice long list of things guard can do is all worthless in wvw.
I’m not giving up one of my precious slot skills to make the pet stand where he already is.
kittening awful patch, truely out of touch with the ranger class. That 85% buff is practically worthless, you go have fun attempting a power melee ranger in wvw.
You buff the three most played and powerful classes in the game, and nerf the universally hated on class. Brilliant plan.
Now we officially suck hard in group wvw. Guarding up the bats was our only real effictive or unique tactic for sieges. Now we can’t do anything but bunker down and play medic.
Do even a single one of you devs even routinely play the class outside of pve? Your pathetic attempt at balancing our class shows you are obviously unfamiliar with it.
Thanks again for completing kittenting on our class again. Devs most likely have more fun perma stalehting all kittening day long.

Do not listen to that guy at all.
Invite me in game if you want to see how a ranger can be effective.
If all I was able to do was pew pew from the battlements I’d be kitten too, too bad that’s not what we are about though.
Every class in the game sucks if you plan on sitting in one spot using only weapon skills. No character in the game has burst me down single handedly from range.

Coming from SF sometimes it can feel like we are facing just one big army instead of 1v1v1, but not this weekend. Props to both FC and ET for putting up some good fights. The 3way battle we had in EB yesterday was brutal for everyone involved.

WvW build.
0/0/30/10/30 Sword/torch and SB
Movement signet
Health regen signet
LightningReflexes
Entangle
Armor/jewelry mostly apothecary. Aiming for maxing healing power/vitality/toughness/cnd dmg
Obviously this build is about staying alive. In WvW you get the most rewards by being alive the longest. With this build it is extremely easy to break down your opponents and escape if you get outnumbered.
I use shared anguish and the condition removal bond as well as the trait that gives you camo when you get stunned. This gives me two stun ignores, a stun breaker, 6 evades, and constant health regen.
Its great for zerg vs zerg. You have enough health to survive running into the fray and stomping, and you ignore the knockdbacks downed people give you. You also are a tank of a medic. With my auto regen going and heal skills I can rez friendlies in the middle of enemy groups.
This build absolutely ruins solo/small group play where I usually don’t go down to less than 5 or 6 people.
Use your evades intelligently and stack your condition you will be a force.

Before you decide add me in game, we can run around on WvW a bit and I’ll show you what a ranger is like.
The class gets hated on quite a bit but they are an extremely fun class to play and if you play smart you can rack up kills quickly.
Just remember for WvW its as much about staying alive as it is killing your enemy. It takes a lot longer to rez and run back than it does to escape and reheal.

I don’t like the trait lines of the Ranger, some are just in the wrong trees. Like traps being in the precision line, how does it make any sense to put the best cond dmg stuff in a crit line? Its insane.
That being said Ranger is a great class when played right. My bunker ranger massacres groups of 3v1 routinely, please explain how a very mobile guy who can rez people like a champ and down players on the walls is useless.
Explain how a trap ranger throwing fire fields, bleeding/chilling/poisioning groups at a time with pets randomly fearing/regenings is useless?
If you mix your slot skills to your situation you can be a great asset in any situation, but I believe we are best at skirmishing.
Learn how to chain your dodges and weapon skill evades and you stay up for a crazy amount of time.
My current bunker build rng has such high healing power I can stand in enemy aoe for stompsand rezzes, nothing beats crushing your enemy while his friends try desperately to bring you down.
Furthermore if you trait right you can have 2 stuns/knockbacks in a row be nullified so you can laugh at guardians trying to KD you while you stomp.

Keep in mind I only really play WvW.
I started off using cats all the like the forum suggested but I recently stopped in favor of dogs.
I run ferg hound and wolf. Seeing as how the bear pets weren’t tanky enough to reliably stay up(even fully traited) and the cats didn’t do enough DPS to be so weak, I decided to aim more for the utility skills.
Jags stealth is great for guard on keeps walls, but really in a one on one face to face fight stealth provides you with absolutely nothing. Wolves had a leap for the knockdown so lynx didn’t cut it either.
Ferg is a good mix of stats and provides aoe health regen which can be a life saver.
Wolf has AOE fear which can be truely devastating. I use fear all the time to keep allies from getting stomped and its only a 20sec cooldown. I use the fear as a mini stun all the time, it can give you that split second you need to root a thief before he gets back into stealth.
Also there is nothing better in the entire game than fearing someone off the edge of a cliff. Also sent my wolf up keep walls last night and got multiple defenders feared off the walls into our zerg.

PvE longbow rangers are great, WvW not so much.
I’ve only found them useful for siege in WvW. Send the pet down or up the walls and AoE the heck out of em, also has a bit better range.
If you have to directly engage the LB is terribad imo. SB has a lot more utility(cripple, bleed, stun, poison, extra dodge) and better damage overall.
No one is going to stand in your aoe long enough to make it worth it, and the damage on it is pretty bad.
Fact is as a SB ranger I laugh at LB rangers and purposely hunt them down.

Just because you don’t understand a skill doesn’t mean its broken.
First of all its main job is to break stun which is does perfectly.
It’s a survival skill meant to keep you alive, not kill. It’s an extra dodge with endurance regen, this skill has kept me alive countless times. Use it more intelligently. If a zerg is chasing you can turn around use the skill for a crazy long dodge and with another 2 sword skill you can fly away.
I run a bunker build and I get stomps all day in skirmishes due to this. Slap on unguent and stomp fools until you get stunned, break it and come back for more.
My bunker ranger usually takes over 5 people to kill and this skill plays a big part of that.

See these are some things you don’t learn from guides.
I’ve never tried the JP as its a JP which just sounds awful to begin with and all you hear about it is people getting ganked there.
I’ve read all of those guides which are a fantastic intro, but they don’t delve quite as deep into the details like your previous post about SM defense.
It’s a great intro, but in order to learn more I think you have to get in a decent WvW guild.

So in one thread I see we are an LOL class to play in WvW/PvP and another I see we are OP. Lulz.
Trap Rng doesn’t need a nerf, it’s plenty beatable. It’s just like the other classes: it’s going to be a tough fight vs a skilled player with experience in their profession.
You have to activate our traps, they don’t just go off. Watch for the trap placement/throw animation to get a general idea of where the trap is.
At the end of the day it’s going to be a hard fight though if the guy knows what he’s doing. You have to avoid the traps while fighting off the conditions and pet, all while fighting a guy with high mobility and evades.
If you can’t burst the ranger down you must have some stuns/conditions as they don’t have many breakers/removals.

Send me an invite yawg, I’ll hop on in a heartbeat. Map chat is ok enough for me to know where I should be, but I’d love to be able to start using comms more.
Filthy,
Those are all good suggestions, I do pretty much all of those except for going to other BL to ask for help which is a good idea.
I think a lot of my problem is a lack of networking.

I’ve only had the game a short time, only lvl 55 on SF but since we’re kind of talking about getting better as a server let me just post my thoughts after playing WvW for about 3 days(haven’t played pve since):
Communication: Stepping into our BL for the first time was a little overwhelming. No one was talking at all, I had no idea where to go or what do do. I had to google a bunch of WvW guides to get the basics down. I’ve seen other servers talk about using a server based TS so everyone could communicate. Does SF have this as well?
Another thing I’ve seen is a lot of players will see an enemy group or get rolled by one, but don’t call out any troop numbers or location.
Tactics: We don’t seem to employ specific strategies, mostly I see us just build one or two siege and zerg the gate until it pops or we get pushed out. Now I’m assuming a lot of that has to do with the fact that A) I haven’t played with a Guild yet and
it works almost everytime due to overwhelming numbers and I don’t mean to troll or anyting but a lot of the defenders have been pushovers.
I’d love to group up with some more experienced SF on teamspeak so I could learn a bit more. I’ve had equal fun rolling with the zerg as well as roaming/taking SCs. I don’t require a guild inviteor anything, but it would be fun to be a part of some more organized teams.
All in all its hard for me to complain since I haven’t really had experience with a guild and I’ve only played it a few days. Hit me up in game or a PM if you wouldn’t mind me running with you.

My brother and I have had the game for only a month or so, both around lvl 55 right now. Looking to learn more about WvW/Dungeons/Fractals.
If it’s ok that we aren’t max lvld yet give me a shout out in game, we just tried WvW for the first time and LOVED it. We’ve played the entire gamesolo so far so we’re really looking to start playing with more people and learn more about the game.
Cheers

Thanks for the input everyone, its appreciated.
Jubskie, I love that ugly kitten too. It’s like a big loveable skinned rat/dog looking guy.
I named mine Mittens.
[sYn] Borlis Pass
You’re right…the murellow is so kitten ugly.
I didn’t really think about being grouped up with other condition builds. I’ve been in one group before on my ranger(usually solo/play with IRL friend) that’s an excellent point.
That’s pretty much exactly what I thought about the dagger, I might try spvp sometime just to play with it again.
I’ll have to try that direct dmg playstyle, I wasn’t sure Rangers could put down enough dmg to make it worth the effort.
I usually go with jag/lynx for pet, but so far jags sealth in PVE seems kind of useless compared to other pets F2 abilities.

I’ve had the game for a month or so, highest char is 50 ranger with 250plus in jewelry/leatherworking.
I understand the game pretty well overall and I’m breezing through levels solo without much difficulty. I’m looking for a decent sized guild in which I can learn a bit more about the game and start playing with more groups.
I’m available after work/class 9PM MST on week days and all day on weekends.
Drop a note in here or contact me in game, I’d like to group up or at least chat a bit to see if we’d be a good fit.
[sYn] Borlis Pass
Hola.
I’ve had the game for a month or so, just got my ranger up to lvl 50. Love the class so far, I use a SB with sword/torch and occasionally using warhorn if I’m on the move a bit more. I traited 20 into power and toughness for the condition damage/duration and crafted all of my gear for condition dmg. I run the movement signet, flame trap, and QZ. I run through solo PVE like nothing, rarely dying.
My question is there a formula for exactly how much condition dmg + equipment actually improves your conditions? For example how much extra burning dmg per tick would you do for let’s say 10 plus condition dmg?
Another question is how viable is the off hand dagger? I can see how its handy 1v1, but unless its a duel or something I’d rather have campfire or the extra swiftness. I enjoy the playstyle, just wondering if it’s viable endgame.
Why does no one use the Murebellow(sp?) in PVE? He’s got crazy HP and a AOE poision. I know my cond dmg doesn’t effect his output, but doesn’t it apply if I combo through his poision field?
Also I wouldn’t mind other opinions on my playstyle and what might scale to end game better. I’m already planning on trying out more BM once I get more trait points.
Usually I solo groups by flinging my torch at one, face tanking for a dodge or so and putting on poision, apply campfire, then switch to SB and kite while laying traps and QZ auto attack things to death.
I’ve basically went all out condition dmg from day one, I’ve heard about the BM build which isn’t exactly my style as I want to be the main focus with the pet just extra dps/utility. What other weapon sets/traits would you suggest?
