Been playing around with builds for casual pvp since i hit 80, and i like the condition play and decided to stick with it, despite being slightly subpar i still enjoy it and still get decent results providing im careful with positioning and kiting etc.
I need some advice on which third specialization to take though, and also what utlilities would be best. I am running full dire gear, although i think this is moot in pvp, but i choose Necromancer rune and carrion amulet. Staff, scepter/dagger weapons.
Curses 2-3-3
Spite 2-1-1
These are the two i am sure are mandatory for the build, but the third is where i am a bit confused, to me the options are as follows;
Blood magic 3-3-1, using wells for utility, life siphon for allies
Soul Reaping 2-3-3, Signet utilities but then cant decide between spectral mastery or fear of death
Death magic 3-3-2, power gain from toughness
Just wondering what goes best with the overall build, im not a big fan of corruption skills, almost like you shoot yourself in the foot to spite your opponent, which often doesnt work out well, atleast for me.
Hi digi, welcome to guild wars.
I was in the same boat as you about 5 weeks ago, new to the game, really liked the idea of necromancer but was worried about the negative comments here on the forums.
I decided to stick it out anyway and glad i did, necromancer is flat out AMAZING!
Unless youre planning on running pro comps in pvp, or want to join a guild that focuses on skipping half the content through exploits to achieve a speed run, then necromancer is perfectly viable in all game modes…let me explain.
It is a very VERY self sufficient profession, described as the master of conditions. At first i thought great, melt faces with poison, bleed and burning. Not the case, it is a master at managing conditions, no other class can transfer, corrupt or play around with boons/conditions like we can. Although you may not be able to buff your whole party with crazy amounts of boons, you can still provide them with important boons/skills to survive. I play a lot of spvp, and some of my traits allow me (and nearby allies) to siphon health during attacks and prevent them from bleeding out, a very underrated aspect i think. There are options to play as a solo roamer and more of a support type necro too, think minions and signets, two very different playstyles. I would definitely recommend playing one, and stick it out until about level 30 before it really becomes beast mode. You can also jump into the pvp lobby to check out all unlocked skills you will get later in the game.
One tip from a fresh leveller…minions for levelling are great, walking around the world with your own death squad is a lot of fun, and you just wont die!
Hope this settles some worries you had, enjoy the game
That’s awesome, thanks for your help it makes a lot of sense, half of my problem was being overwhelmed by all the kits. I like the grenades a lot, but the damage seems a bit lacklustre at the moment, probably my build though, and I also like pistols as weapons, and conditions as a whole over direct damage.
New player, recently hit 80 on my main a necro, mostly play pvp.
Decided to make an alt mainly for completing the pvp dailies that require a win on another prof…but for the life of me I can’t stay alive long enough to contribute anything more than 60-80 points in a match, I’m constantly getting annihilated, especially by warriors (just can’t get away). I think 90% of the problem is skill, I am new after all but was wondering if any experienced players could give me some pointers, such as the simplest specs to at least start learning a viable role in spvp. How and when to switch kits etc in various situations. Any help is much appreciated.
Been playing around with a Reaper Minion build in unranked solo with much success, focussing on keeping enemies chilled to stay on them and using toughness to power traits along with vitality stats.
Reaper 2-2-2
Spite 3-1-3
Death Magic 1-3-2
All sentinels armor
Svanir Rune
Soldier Amulet
Consume conditions, Bone minion, bone fiend, locust signet, flesh golem.
Very tanky and very face melty from the games i have been playing. I am newish to the game though so would appreciate feedback from more experienced players as to improvements and also where the build might lack.
Edit: using dagger warhorn offset, swarm pre engage for swiftness and cripple

Only been playing gw2 for a month or so now, and I have necro as my main…absolutely love it. I was a bit worried when I first read the forums…so much negativity, like everyone is an elitist jerk. But having let go of the idea that this would be like my previous mo, I realised there is much more to playing successfully as a necro, as a team. Think everyone needs to get a grip to be honest. I’ve never been kicked or slandered for playing necro, and fair quite well in pvp which is my main interest. Think sceptre and axe need more synergy with conditions but apart from that the necro in my opinion is amazing and unique. Reaper has just blown me away with its kitten wrecking ball feeling.
