They’re nice looking, but I’m one of >those people< that will never buy an outfit. I like mixing and matching, so full armour sets that let you do that are more appealing to me. So I’m voting with my dollars.
As the topic says really, im just curious as to whether older people play this game? Personally, im 33 and literally just starting out on the game and so I havent spoken to many people yet. Not that it makes a huge difference to me how old people who play are if the game is good (which i am yet to find out), but i guess i was just being nosey about the demographic :x
44 years old… And I’ve been playing since pre-release GW1….
I shouldn’t look at these at work. I’m snorting from laughing so hard.
Love it. Made me LOL.
So a little sidebar… Does anyone know if that was in-game footage? Because it could just be my old eyes tricking me, but it looks like the graphics are sharper? clearer? more detailed? Anyone else hope/think there might be some sort of rendering engine upgrade being rolled out too?
Ever since I saw this vid, this happens every time my reward chests start wiggling.
This made me LOL so hard I was snorting. Good thing no one else is at work yet.
LOL. I was totally expecting to be Rick-rolled too.
You’re not even curious to see what happens with Sylvari in HoT? I thought the developers hinted it would be an interesting time to be one…
I liked this reply until I noticed two lines in it:

“I think we really need to dispel some misconceptions about efficiency. If I deem something more efficient than some others, for a given goal, it means that what I support can achieve more, it means that you can get more output for your input. But this presupposes that you give the right input. I write in my guides that players should be conscious about who they are what they want to achieve. My belief is that players should be aware of their skill level (mine is not that high) so that they know the quality of their input and can therefore chose what build to use for best results. I firmly believe in this and I respect anyone who makes such choices. Of course I respect even more those who pick builds that empower their team, but I cannot dream for everybody to be perfectly altruistic. That being said it is an objective fact that some builds are more efficient (get more output for the right input) than others, considering the core of the common desires of the community: getting rewards. But it is also true that the higher the efficiency the more commitment it requires from the players and their team. I am perfectly fine with people choosing the level of commitment they want to enjoy their gaming experience, and consequently I am perfectly fine with people not choosing the most efficient builds – just like I do. And as I am perfectly fine with anyone’s decision, I expect people to be perfectly fine with my explaining of how builds are efficient or not. Is this not fair? If Kodiak had read just the introduction of my guide then this conversation would have been over two years ago.”
—
My issue with the two bolded sections are: on one hand you say you’re fine with people finding the builds that work for them based on what they are capable of input. But immediately follow it with the implication that if they choose a build that is not the most efficient, they are selfish or lack commitment. Am I reading that wrong?
It’s great to have an ideal build and explain that to people looking for help. I think that’s awesome. But if it’s the only choice that is handed to people, when not everyone is capable of using that build effectively (not everyone has the same skillset, that’s just life), then it’s not very helpful. And it won’t help them achieve more. I think being willing to use that build as an ideal and trying to explain it to new players is good. But I think working with people to find a build that helps them achieve more at their level of ability is better.
If someone came on and said “I’ve tried your build, but I just can’t get it to work for me.” would you only suggest that build, or would you work with them to find a better build for >them<? I’m trying to figure out if you really want people to achieve more, even if it means suggesting a build that is not the most efficient, but would be the most efficient for them.
There are many people on this forum who do just that… And I’ve learned quite a bit from their posts. I think knowing where people are as far as level of play is, can lead to much more constructive advice.
If you’ve given that advice in the past and I’m just unaware, please forgive me. I can only go by the most recent things I’ve read, which give me no indication of truly constructive advice. If you have, then I apologize in advance.
Depends what your definition of achieving more is. For you Zelyhn, it’s to do it as fast and as efficiently as possible. That’s your goal in the game. It’s not everyone’s goal, and what you want to achieve in the game can and is probably very different than what other people want to achieve. You either don’t want to see this, or you simply think your view is the only one that truly matters.
Not everyone can play the same way, we all have different skill sets as individual people do. Some people can stack might, kite, etc… and there are many people who can’t. So, presenting a one-size fits all “optimal build” for everyone as the only one that people should aspire too, doesn’t take into account that we are all special little snowflakes.
Giving people advice on different builds which take that into account is in fact not encouraging them to achieve less or not to care, it’s helping them find a build that helps them achieve more based on what their actual capabilities are.
Some people are good at math, some people are good at english. Your reaction times are probably ten times better than mine.
It’s really admirable that you think everyone with the build you love to play can achieve more and play at your level if they just learn that build. But the reality is, is that many many people can’t or won’t. And if you can’t “achieve more” with the build that all the elite eles in the game say you should be able to with, then it can be very disheartening and possibly drive people from the game.
My brother’s were really good at football… It came naturally to them. I can’t play sports to save my life. You remind me of my parents disappointment when I tried and tried to emulate them, and couldn’t achieve more in sports.
Kodiak does care about other players, as do you. To say he doesn’t care is a really really distorted view that I can’t even begin to understand. The difference is, he’s the kind of coach that helps you find the tools that will work best for you, whereas, you are the kind of coach that seems to say “The only way you can be on my team is if you learn to play the way I do.”
I loved the initial revamp to the dailies and monthlies because it gave us choices… I actually liked doing them. But with the newest revision I don’t usually bother. The choices are not usually great, and it ends up with only portions of the map being populated. Whereas having more choices meant having people wandering in more areas. Or you could accomplish them in a more natural way with daily exploration instead of having to pop around so much. The daily login rewards are… meh.
Definitely love exploring, finding the many hidden beauties of Tyria. So many details many miss as we run from 1 event to the other: The silly/funny and sometime sad conversations/stories of many NPC. Schools of beautiful fish at the bottom of a hidden lake. Amazing colors in out of the way gardens. Who can resist that adorable little charr female tending to her garden in a garbage dump. So so much more to discover and admirer.
Where is this? I now have to see it…. I remember the first time I was on by myself because my friends weren’t able to play that night. I spent the entire night slowly exploring Lion’s Arch (pre-destroying) and I kept telling my husband how beautiful everything was… I’ve kind of let my map completion quest overtake slowing down to see the sights… but I still stop and admire the detail and places in the game…
AFAIK you shouldn’t be downloading the Windows Update graphic drivers if you’re installing the ones direct from Nvidia’s website.
Does it? I didn’t notice any stacks of might except one from “Elemental Attunement”.
Also does it even work if I equip two weaponswap sigils (like in that build)?
Thanks so far but I really didn’t see any mightstacks. That’s because they only work while you are in combat, while Elemental Attunement also works out of combat.
And yes, they work together. What would NOT work is, if you would use two sigils of battle for example (doesn’t matter if superior, major, minor or a mix). Also, RtL is a weapon swap
Lol; really? =0
Edit: Just saw your edit, Jana. Anyway; I’ve also answered your other question, so I’ll just keep my post that way. ^^
I didn’t know RtL was a weapon swap either… but it counts for one.

That makes it simple for me really then. I’ll just avoid any threads that involve you guys going back and forth saying the same things over and over again. That’s my point. There is no real discussion. You might as well be a Republican and a Democrat trying to reach some middle ground.
If there was going to be “closure” it would have happened by now. If you were debating a single point, such as “efficiency”, you’d be the winner. Since the debate is broader than that, which is; the style of gameplay that people enjoy (best build being entirely subjective in that context), it will never end. When people are asking for advice on builds, what they enjoy and take away from the game is very different from what I may want out of the game. Or you. Or Kodiak.
So, now that we’ve established that this discussion of yours will be repeated ad nauseum, I know to just ignore it, and avoid these threads like the plague.
Polite or not, it’s just simply boring to read. But have at it.
So Kodiak – you basically want people to be able to find a play style and spec that they enjoy playing.
And Zelyhn, you want to kill things as quickly and efficiently as possible, because that is the way you enjoy playing, and think is the best way to play.
What exactly is the argument? Present both your views to new players, and let them decide.
I personally played staff and pretty much camped in Fire for the longest time, because I avoided the whole idea of “builds” entirely. Then I began exploring it.
I’ve recently began playing with d/d and have been enjoying it immensely and have soloed stuff that I was previously unable to do with staff. And the traits and skill combos I think I picked were a combo of two builds. I feel like I’m challenged, and that the fights are always fun.
I plan on learning the other weapon set combos as well.
So I’ve found combos that make it enjoyable for >me< to play. “Efficient” isn’t my idea of fun, but for other people, clearly it is. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Nor is it wrong to espouse a viewpoint of finding a build that is individual to you and that you enjoy playing. I’ve read your discussions, and you really both should just agree to disagree and point your discussions towards the people asking the questions instead of taking over threads to rehash the same things over and over again with each other.
A gentlemen’s agreement to not kitten over each other’s posts would be awesome.
Or not. It’s just sad that people (like me) who do like to learn new things have to pick through threads just to find one useful piece of information.
Just thought I’d through this into the mix, since it’s actual developers talking about migrating from dx9 to dx11: http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/2362/the-pros-and-cons-dx9-moving-to-dx11-render
And from Microsoft itself: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ff476190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
dx11 comes with level 10 and level 9 modes, so a new engine would target all available hardware, as I understand it.
Hi forum goers, Im new to this game and I was excited tonight doing my first ever dungeon in it I hit 35 and saw that it was open for me to try… I found a group for the Ascalonian catacombs(something like that) Story Mode that was accepting everyone so i figured that was a good one to try being a total noob. I joined the group and was having fun until the first story screen popped up which i wanted to watch… well when i got done with it , the group was gone. It apparently continued on without me leaving me in a place that i had never been I tried to figure out where they went and kept running into enemys. So i pretty much got to kill a boss i think and loot a chest … and not be able to enjoy the rest of the place either story or the loot from it because i was stuck alone lost. It kind of killed the experience for me that i was so excited for.
Im just wondering if this is a normal thing, if no one waits for their group members to finish watching the story scenes and just ditches them if they are watching them so they can not continue on with the group. Yea i know im a noob , or baddy or whatever else people would call me, but i though maybe people wouldnt just leave a group member behind lost and go on without them.
I want to try again in the dungeon but i have a feeling the same thing will happen… ill try to watch the story and just get ditched again. If you ask why i dont run it with friends… well im new here i know no one :p
Sorry for ranting or whatever I just want to know if this is the normal occurrence that i should expect trying to do a story mode dungeon
Add me to your friends list. If you see me online and I’m not busy, I will happily do story mode with you for any of the dungeons.
It took me 12 seconds total to open a new tab, go to youtube and find a walkthrough for a specific dungeon. Five more seconds to find the cutscenes.
By that logic, they might as well not play the game. You can obviously just experience it all through YouTube. That sounds like so much fun.
Out of curiosity, why do you want to complete them all? I decided a month ago I wanted to do them all, and with only one exception, I did them all myself. I fell a lot. But there is almost always other people doing them who are willing to rez you or help you complete the puzzle. Once I stopped caring about falling, I stopped getting frustrated with them and found them easier to do.
For some reason I thought there was a title for completing them, but there isn’t.
I guess you just want the achievement points?
Wow. That really sucks. Should have been 115 Gold. I don’t know how that happened to you, but I feel for you. Whether it was your mistake or a glitch, the end result is that sucks.
The MOST evil one is still the hidden aetherblade one. I’ll admit that I wouldn’t have gotten the achievement without a super nice mesmer that helped. I plan on going back to it and doing it without help. It is the only one that I “cheated” on, and I don’t feel super bad about it, because it is diabolical.
I decided a month ago that I really wanted the achievement for the jumping puzzles. I’ve completed almost all of them (some I had to watch a walk through) but many I figured out on my own. I’ll add you as a friend and watch for you online. Be warned: I still fall, A LOT. But I also laugh A LOT. I used to find them maddening, but now… there’s usually such good humoured people playing them, that I just laugh when I fall. All those falls make it that much sweeter when I get to the end.
Sigh. You fed the troll. OP hasn’t posted a single reply since his/her original message. What a time to be alive.
Reading this thread makes me happy that the only time I have map chat up is when I need to ask a question. And every time I’ve done that, I’ve gotten a helpful and polite answer to my (sometimes silly) question. And then I turn it off.
Swear words don’t bother me, but I really don’t need to see a stream of juvenile language rolling down my screen either. The comments of “we’re all adults” is so contrary to the choice of words and speech that they’re defending, that it’s laughable.
Personally I’ve never had abuse heaped on me or witnessed it. But I know it exists. And with no exception, >all< of the random people I’ve started chatting with and playing with in the same area have been helpful, polite and fun to play with. Not once have I had a random person or group of people that I’ve joined up with turn into jerks.
I also notice that the “me generation” is in full effect. “It doesn’t bother me, so you should all suck it up.” So your feelings are the only ones that matter? Being civil to other people doesn’t matter?
Words don’t hurt me. But I’m aware enough that my feelings aren’t your feelings, and I should be respectful enough to consider that when I open my mouth around you.
That’s 10 hours a day. Wow.
Grats! I’m working towards that achievement myself.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Chantry_of_Secrets Do you have this? This is apparently one of the places that is usually missed. As well, I know that there were two hearts added to the Charr starting zone, just outside of the Black Citadel that I was missing. There was also another waypoint that was added, and I wish I could tell you were it is. But I found out I was missing them when I went back into that area. (Previously completed, but when I went back, they were then incomplete.)
- edit ** the new hearts didn’t show up in that area until I actually went to it.

Now that escalated quickly oO
So fictional characters (in the public domain, mind you, so not against the naming policy) and scientific principles named after them are now suggestive when the original piece of fiction was kinda suggestive sometimes. Got it.
So… are bookshelves suggestive now? Because I’m pretty sure I’ve seen porn with bookshelves in the background. I mean, the shelves weren’t doing anything suggestive, but I’m sure being in a porno somehow made them naughty, right?
Wait, I’ve got actual porn on my bookshelves. Dang. That’s unfortunate… Anyway, my point still stands, and I sincerely doubt my name is in any way suggestive.Look, I just meant to a) explain why your name got changed and b) what you can do to avoid this issue in the future (though maybe I my tone was a little snide; I’ve got a headache, I’m moody). Obviously, and that doesn’t even have anything to do with the case at hand, no-one from staff thought my name was inappropriate, and surely the number of players who looked at it and thought “woah now, that’s not okay!” is tiny, if these people exist at all.
“Porn Stache” is an entirely different thing, and you should be aware that anything similar will get the same treatment (in case of a character, that would be the game asking you to rename the toon before you can proceed to play with it).
Nah… there was no escalation. I find the whole thread has been somewhat easygoing and playful. OP may have seemed a bit aggressive in his response to you, but I didn’t think it was overly so. But that’s just how I chose to interpret things. I try not to read too much tone into things people say in forums. I think the OP got the answers and help he was looking for… A new player looking for answers from other players when he didn’t get a quick response from technical support.
All good I would think.
I shall never look at another bookshelf the same way Red Queen… Clearly, they are all filthy. LOL

Red Queen is a character from Alice in Wonderland.
Truuuuuee Alice in Wonderland isn’t remotely suggestive.
Sarcasm duly noted. LOL. Just because the story has suggestive parts in it, doesn’t mean the name of one of its characters is suggestive in and of itself.

Keep in mind too, that that name is really only for forum use or a name to give people who want to add you to their friend list in game. Your character name(s) is/are separate from your account name. Unless you want to name one of your characters Nectar Shop…

Red Queen is a character from Alice in Wonderland. I don’t know where your mind is, but I don’t find it suggestive.
You are asking for advice. That’s generally what “help” is. You should have read and known by the TOS that your name wasn’t appropriate. The alternate you want to switch it to, also won’t be allowed. So we are being helpful by trying to get you to understand and not make the same mistake or waste time putting in tickets that will get you no where.
Now, having gone into my own account settings, I don’t see and don’t believe there is any way to change your account name yourself. I believe the only way you can change it is to talk to a support person. As they released a somewhat massive patch today that unfortunately comes with tons of bugs, I’m pretty sure they are being overwhelmed with support requests, and unfortunately for you, I’m going to guess that an account rename is probably low on their priority list at the moment. It sucks, and I’m sorry that you feel your first experience hasn’t been what you consider to be positive. Hopefully you and ArenaNet can come to some sort of username that you will be happy with and you’ll be able to enjoy the game.
Welcome to GW2… if you stick around I’m sure you’ll have a good time.
My ele did the Elaine dance from Seinfeld in GW1. I fell out of my chair laughing so hard when I first did the emote. I had been known to break out that dance move in real life which made it even funnier.
I’m a bit surprised that WvW map completion no longer gives map completion rewards. Personally I was happy about removing it from the Map Completion achievement as I wasn’t looking forward to trying to do it myself, but I still think if you >are< willing to do it, you should get the reward for it. That doesn’t make any sense to me. They could have made it a separate achievement for the WvWers or the PVEers who still wanted to do it. I can’t wait to try out the camera changes…. Won’t be able to for a few days, so I’m sure some of the other problems will get dealth with before then.
I’m quite pleased with this as well. I have almost zero interest in WvW and wasn’t looking forward to being killed repeatedly while trying to mind my own business running around the map. LOL. Completion just got that much closer for me. Woo-Hoo.
Did anyone else notice the tengu smack dab in the middle of the screenshot in the latest news post/preview of HOT??
I’m going to assume it’s just an NPC… but still… Dare to dream we get another playable race.
Choosing to ignore the skritt in the very same screenshot invalidating this whole line of thinking.
Except I knew that the skritt bomber was part of the game as an NPC. I haven’t watched any of the PVP video stuff as I don’t do it (or WvW), so although I knew from reading an article that the Skritt bombers were part of it, I had zero knowledge of the Tengu being part of it. (So much for them being non-aligned and non-interferring.)
So, no, it doesn’t really invalidate my line of thinking. I just didn’t have all of the necessary data to evaluate that picture properly. Now I do…
I’m going to assume it’s just an NPC… but still… Dare to dream we get another playable race.
And so you should. They’ve confirmed that they would not be adding any new races as it would not actually add anything to the game (since all races are technically the same). It would be cool, but they aren’t doing it.
They’ve also been quoted as saying “Nothing is off the table”. And I think they could add tons at least story wise. But yeah… we’ll leave this in the “dream” category.
These are actually my first posts in the forums… Been playing since GW1. I lurk quite a bit, and I love reading what everyone has to say about the game.

I too would love to see more emotes available. The first Guild Wars definitely had more available. I would also love the ability to buy extra dances. It would be great if an entire guild could do the same dance. I know it doesn’t add to gameplay… but I would pay to have my character doing the hustle… or the Elaine dance one of my characters did in the first Guild Wars.
