Thing is that most gvg battles are within the “max group size” in which one ranger is effective. Beyond 15-20 people, one ranger is not going to be a noticably good teamplayer at all, that is a fact.

Say’s who? I know of exactly ZERO rangers used in 15v15 GvG’s by any of the top GvG guilds either EU or NA….

Not really.
I am rather sure that the devs does not have “interact with people on the forums” in their job-description. From my experience at least that is almost never the case.

I am developer….and it is implied in your job. Guess what….when you code something or build something it’s usually for use by somebody….guess who you need to go see when you need to figure how to kittening build it….

whether you have a liason to speak indirectly or you speak to the consumer directly in order to know WHAT to code and program…you need to talk to the consumer. THat’s pretty much it…..so yes….it’s their job….

There are a lot of people in this thread who don’t seem to know what a periphery is. Comparing a ranger to staff ele? Seriously? Rangers have a utility/elite for stab, a WATER FIELD, 3s stealth on a 12s cooldown, and evades for days. Not to mention that their arrows track through stealth to blow up thieves and mesmers. Rangers can easily survive and get to a periph reset with all this to get smoke/blast or refuge stealth, and now that reset has a water field as well. And a power longbow build will absolutely light up glassy eles and necros.

Depends on what you define as periphery….the way the guilds I have always run with..in a gvg we have sort of 3 distinct groups….periphery (Thief/Mesmer or Zerk Warrior)…their job is to hunt around the edge of the groups and pick off out of position players and/or ele’s/necro’s that they find…or other peripherals. Then we have the backline, consisting off ele’s and necro’s and then the frontline of warriors/guards.

The ranger in a backline role IMO is useless…..it doesn’t not have near the AoE DPS of the other two classes and ele’s bring two RANGED water fields, where as the ranger only has 1 close range water field. So ranger’s don’t really fit into the backline and ele/necro would be better to have…

In a peripheral role…..they may be able to find a niche….their biggest issue again…is mobility… thieves and mesmers can almost move around freely and if a driver tries to focus them they have many means to escape. A ranger would be pretty limited on “oh kitten” buttons and escape skills and they don’t have really great mobility (similar to necro’s).

Clearly….in a frontline role…they are not ideal…in order to increase survivability they would lose dps….they really only bring a decent waterfield and decent CC.

Rangers simply don’t have a really good place in any of the roles….you MIGHT be able to TRY and find a place for them in a peripheral sense, I just think they will end up becoming targeted and trained and they won’t have enough mobility to escape and would end up being a liability.

People are kittened….but if you post about it….your infracted or banned….they refuse to actually communicate at all and when they decide to it’s a cryptic (well we are working on something but we are not comfortable telling you about it right now). Boy I wish my clients would let me do that in software development…..

So here we are in the sad state of affairs that is the WvW forums lol. Everyone that has complained is gone….any new guys that complain are working on being gone….so everyone just kinda stays silent hoping anet will realize that communication is key regardless of how many times they need to update and change the information they provide to us about what they are working on….

Arenanet Forum Main Page:

Be heard! Seek wisdom! Join a conversation with fellow adventurers, or start your own..

I was heard, and the wisdom I required was I was told to be quiet.

Joining a conversation and bumping long-dead threads with developer posts in them as an attention-seeking tactic are two entirely different things. A few people decided to start digging through the forum and bumping old topics, not to contribute to conversations there or post new and insightful comments to breathe new life into the topic, but to be disruptive and to try and “prove a point”. Since asking nicely rarely seems to work with the people engaging in this behavior, I made the sticky post explicitly telling everybody to stop, under threat of infraction, suspension and ultimately banning. If there’s a topic you actually wish to discuss, then please open a thread (if an active one does not currently exist) and do so. This is not a new limitation on what you can talk about, just a request to stop the disruptive necroposting.

I understand your frustrations and desire to hear from developers about what’s under development, I really do. However, as I said in the other thread I posted in today, we are unable to comment on features under development until they reach a state where we, as a company, are comfortable talking about them. So, when you ask “are you working on x” or “what’s the status of y”, we can’t comment.

Being disruptive on the forums (in old or new threads), making rude or demanding posts and posting comments like “there is no WvW team anymore” are hardly an endearing method that encourages our developers to post more. I would ask that you take this into consideration when posting as well.

Again I can assure you, the developers are reading the forums regularly, even though they don’t have time to post a reply to everything they read. Additionally, as I read these forums probably more than anybody here, I regularly compile reports for the competitive team to make sure they are up to speed on your concerns and desires. Does this mean your every wish will be granted? No, it does not. What it does mean is that the team is regularly being made aware of how the community feels about the game and what features, content, etc. that you like, dislike or want to see in the future. What it also means is that we take note of when you all ask for or suggest a feature that is currently under development, so that down the line, when it’s actually released and a bunch of people clamor to the forums to complain that “nobody asked for this” (you know who you are), we can refer back and be secure in the knowledge that somebody did, in fact, ask for it.

Now, this post has ended up way longer than I intended it to be. I don’t expect what I’ve said here to cause a sudden change in the tone or content of the posts on this forum. What I do expect is your understanding that we’re not just sitting here twiddling our thumbs and I haven’t enacted this rule against necroposting as some sinister method to justify shutting down the WvW forum. WvW is one of the core game types of Guild Wars 2, and as long as we have forums and I have something to say about it, we will have a place for WvW discussion.

Speaking from a developer perspective and owner of numerous forums….this is bullkitten. If you don’t want people necro’ing threads….ARCHIVE THEM.

The point of allowing people to bring up old posts is to keep relevant content together regardless of age. If you feel there is a point in time at which people should never be allowed to bring up old threads at all. They should be moved to a read-only archive forum so that people can still search them. Blaming users for using your forum software as it was built, with the features it was built with is stupid….at best.

It’s not just a matter of how much damage they do on the periph. It is also a matter of mobility and survivability. In order for a ranger to do a high burst…he has to give up a good amount of survivability. Also they lack mobility. So if you are fighting on the periph and the driver pulls the frontline over to try to burst you, what do you have to survive or escape? Thieve’s can stealth as can mesmers and destroyer warriors run greatsword for high mobility….what does a ranger have to survive and escape? Nothing…they will simply end up being focused on the periph and out of position and become a liability. Regardless of the damage they do.

Sad part is….if any guild could fight any guilds, we could create our own GvG league and have seasons and have the winners of the seasons do a playoff on our own…..right now it’s not possible because we can’t schedule matches ahead of time…

GvG needs it’s own game mode.

For the people saying that it will take away from WvW. I don’t believe that is so. In fact, I would bet more guilds would return to play that game mode if it offered a nice competitive game mode with rankings and leaderboards etc and was supported. Also those same “GvG” guilds would still go into WvW and play.

GvG is NOT the same as sPvP even in custom arena’s. The build comps are very limited in sPvP and even in a custom server you can’t go past 10v10…so 15v15 and 20v20 is out of the question.

There is and has been so much potential for GvG, even turning into an esport or monetizing the mode through the gem store.

The thing about GvG is that it builds pride and community because your doing it with your guild and friends. There is a reason this community formed naturally…all Anet needs to do is foster and support it and I think it would bring back some more competitive guilds that left for a while due to stagnation and would actually HELP WvW and its population.
