SAB: Ok what kind of game is this?

Trying to claim what the “silent majority” likes or dislikes is fail, considering they are silent.

I will always remember John Smedly, CEO of SOE, stating that “people who like the NGE are playing the game, not posting on the forums” Shortly after that, they lost massive numbers of subscribers, and were forced to refund an expansion purchase to anyone that asked for it.

No one knows what the silent majority is doing. Silently playing the game, or Silently uninstalling it.

Ahh, such a true post.

What I find baffling about this thread are the people who, as entitled to their opinions as they may be, are shocked at the “kind of game” this is.

How could you have not done a little homework and clearly seen this was not a grimdark or Tolkien high fantasy game. It doesn’t really suggest “traditional fantasy” at all. I think it was very obvious that this game was not going to be a serious affair.

If you’re asking for a surrogate world that also just so happens to be fantasy in setting, then this has never been a stop on the train ride worth getting off for. It’s a fine world, but it is not deeply immersive, making me forget reality, and extremely serious. It has never been portrayed as such.

The people in this thread who seem to feel almost betrayed astound me.

Lack of Weapon Skins: Super Adventure Box

They have said on these forums that they will develop more Adventure Box based on community reception… given the overwhelmingly positive response that seems to be going around I think more weapon skins and levels will be in order sooner or later.

GW2 Deficient in Hardcore Content

If the game goes the route of “hardcore endgame progression” it will likely suffer in other areas like open world events. The “core of the game” was meant to be a conveniently cooperative open world experience mingled in with exploring and simple “being” in the world of Tyria.

It was not ever meant to be a game centered around bum rushing to level cap and grinding an instanced “dungeon” (though they aren’t dungeons, more like brightly lit hallways) over and over again, rendering the rest of the game obsolete.

One of the worst things about MMO’s that focus on end game progression as their meat is the mentality that “The game starts at level cap.” Nothing is more poisonous to new players, and nothing makes your current playerbase more jaded, demanding, and unappreciative.

Besides, that’s not what MMORPG’s, games based around being in an open world and part of a larger community, should be about. Spending all of our time in instances and cliques is NOT “massively multiplayer”, it’s called Diablo and DotA.

Did you buy GW2 as a PVP Esport?

It’s astounding to me that after two beta weekends it wasn’t clear to everyone that this was not the next big e-sport.

I honestly always sort of laughed to myself when I saw things like "competitive PvP’ being thrown around on various websites and blogs during its development.

You are the victims of the “I want it now” phenomenom that seems to be a bit too common. It’s meant to be rare, they even stated it’s rare and you’ve got people spending hundreds of real dollars / pounds / euros on it. You are your own worst enemies. Veruca Salt syndrome.

Make it common, no-one will want it. You can’t blame ANet for your own reckless spending.

Or they could provide a way to acquire the items via playing the game… like through a challenge or a crafting grind… I dunno… I’d like that a lot.

I’m ok with not having it now. And people thought Diablo 3 was bad… lol

The whole point of this post was that there should not be a slot machine. Cash shop micro transactions are fine but they should not be RNG based.

- Should not be? Who are you to tell a company how it should run its business? If you don’t like it, then don’t buy gems to burn to useless crap. Simple as that.

It’s because people thought that the game would not come to things like this per the way the game was advertised to us for years…

If you make a game with the promise of no gear treadmill, but then you put one in the game, and you take what people THOUGHT the game was going to be about, and you gate it behind a slot machine that takes real money to play…

You really think people have no right to say something about that?

Only in America are businesses treated like they have feelings or something….

Edit: and to be clear, putting cosmetic items on the cash shop from time to time (like the quaggan backpacks) is fine! It’s the slot machine technique with no other way to acquire the items that is making people upset.

Take items that are exclusive or in high demand but not game-altering (cosmetic items like backpack and weapon skins) and put them into random boxes. A dozen people or so complain about bad luck, a dozen people or so boast about good luck, and a million people buy boxes by the dozens.

.

I thought the whole point of this game was to play with items that “weren’t game altering” since I always heard so much preaching about no gear treadmill and no stat chasing. So… now we chase stats in Fractals (lolwut), and for the stuff that the game was originally stated to be about we have to gamble? (lolwut)

This is just what I’m gleaning from these posts and from things I read about this game during its development etc etc. I’m still a new player, so maybe I’m wrong.

Thanks for the link Vorch. What is different about Tarnished Coast and Jade Quarry?

And Allisa, I think I actually USED to be on CD but changed because a friend started playing on Isle of Janthir!

Ok, so a little background.

My first MMO was a game called FLYFF. It was a Korean “grindfest” MMO where you got together with people, smashed monsters repeatedly, and wore really cute/cool armor while doing it. What I loved about FLYFF was this cool armor, and how the game pushed you to play with others. What I hated about it was how boring the grinding got.

I moved on to WoW like most people and stayed there through the end of high school and entirely through college. What I loved about WoW was the tight gameplay and the awesome world. What I hated about it was how over time the game became less social and there really was not cute/cool armor. You were locked in to “the best” armor regardless of how it looked.

Cue Guild Wars 2. A game where you go into the open world to do events and smash face with other people. A game that rewards you for helping others. A game that doesn’t base everything on having “the best” armor. When the game was in development I heard “cosmetic upgrades” thrown around alot. It was being developed by an awesome team too! That meant: TIGHT GAMEPLAY and a BEAUTIFUL WORLD!

It was like everything I loved about Flyff and WOW was finally going to come together into a big beautiful game. I was STOKED. This was the first game I have ever gotten a CE for. That’s how STOOOOKKKEED I was!

Well, I’ve never managed to hit level cap… the gear while leveling all looks the same… and its ugly! I bought one of the skins off the store… “Profane” armor? That’s the skin I get to use until I hit level cap. Not very exciting. The bunny ears, boxing gloves, hoodies, pirates outfit… all things I would want can only be worn in town? I can’t even use them in the world… so I can’t use them while I’m actually playing the game, just AFK’ing in town?

:(

The world events in the low level zones are becoming sparse as players sit in LA and spam for FOTM… something I thought this game wanted to avoid. It’s so World of Warcraft and so lame. Sorry.

Did I just get the wrong impression? What happened? Is this my own fault? I’m to the point where I’m googling “Flyff clone”, but guess what… it’s all these low budget games that are probably scams.

I really thought this was going to be the game for people like me who just want to make good friends, help one another, and look cute while doing it… it sounds so cheesy, but that’s really what I enjoy. I play DotA when I want to put my tough face on. I play MMO’s to be light hearted.

I mean, the game is GOOD… it’s just not what I was expecting. Been trying to return to it, but I think it’s not going to work out. Is there more to look forward to at level cap? :’(
