Milkduds.7109

I’m sorry but I have to start this discussion because I need to find out if I’m alone in my thoughts here, and I’m tired of the illogical arguements generated in game regarding this matter.

First of all, before you call me cheap, poor etc. I can easially afford the $50 cost of the expansion, I could afford 100 copies if I really wanted to. But afford and willing to pay are different. I find it absurd to charge the full price of a AAA game for how little content is being added. A few new maps, WvW maps, specilization, new class and mastery system. All of those content additions are wonderful, but is it really worth the full price of a game for content that will last less than 24 hours?

Unless there is far more content being hidden away from us as a surprise I refuse to continue supporting this game, when you consider you can pay for various popular MMO’s such as WoW for $15 and in the MONTHLY update already adds more content than this expansion is adding. Granted WoW is a pay to play but you’re still getting 5x more content for your buck.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

LOL!!! MONTHLY?!?!?! You think WoW has MONTHLY patches? Have you ever even PLAYED WoW? WoW barely updates AT ALL. It’s FAMOUS for it.

Recent WoW expansion: http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Warlords-Draenor-Expansion-Mac/dp/B00GLZQO30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436970077&sr=8-1&keywords=warlords+of+draenor

What people are saying about it: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/18194054957

And that’s just one. Google “WoD lack of content” and enjoy the treasure trove of complaining, valid complaining, about Blizzard’s recent offering.

Also, the people whining about A-Net lowering the barrier of entry to new players by rolling GW2 Vanilla into the HoT’s purchase? Unbelievable. “It’s gonna be easier for my friends to join the game now. SCREW YOU A-NET.”

The expansion in $50 (like WoW’s most recent blunder) and Vanilla GW2 is now $0. Stop lying and bending the truth to suit your “Angsty gamer against the man” narrative, folks.

Considering people still go to low level zones in the Vanilla game world and Dry Top/Silverwastes was added as story content for the narrative I am betting that the expansion will launch with one large zone, and more will be rolled out during the Living Story Season 3.

They want people to play and exhaust the first zone. There is no level cap increase, there isn’t a need for “progression” through multiple zones other than your own lack of attention span and constant need for “NEW SHINY” like a skritt on coke.

Let’s be honest: if they put out 3 new zones, you’d all look up on Dulfy “what is the best zone for farming” and that’s where you’d spend 100% of your time. Don’t lie.

New zones will roll out over time with LS 3. I bet you. Alternatively, you can go play WoW or FFXIV and then you can come back with some perspective on just how small, “one and done”, and useless 99% of the content they pump into those games becomes in a 1 month window because of their outdated power creep model.

Maybe that’s what you guys need. To go play something else and get some perspective. If some of you actually believe that WoW updates “monthly”… how out of touch can you be?

When you first make a Norn the very first line that an NPC speaks to you is “HAIL, HERO!”

I die. Firstly because the female norn voices are so deadpan, and secondly because I’m NOT a hero. I JUST logged in. Are you sure you have the right person?

So don’t gamble. Simple.

The chests are not necessary. I keep 5 or so in my bank at any time and destroy the rest. Occasionally I get a Black Lion Key while just kitten ing about and I view it as a fun little treat from the grab bag. I wouldn’t dream of spending money on chests. Why? There are so many other wonderful little items in the store that I can spend my gems on.

Milkduds.7109

A year or so ago I tried joining an explorable AC run. On the first boss everyone insisted that we stack up in a tiny corner, bring the boss to the corner, stand on the boss, and kill it.

It was a disaster. They tried, again and again, this failing method, instead of just fighting the boss out in the big open room, which seems to be what was originally intended by the developer. Eventually people started getting angry at one another. The group leader and some guy who had a lot of experience started yelling at each other.

I just left the group. No time for that noise. I’ve never done another dungeon in this game. Worst instanced dungeon experience I have ever had in an MMO. GW2 dungeons are a joke. The fact that people can finish them in 5 minutes by skipping trash, doing weird stuff like “running up against a corner”, de-aggroing enemies, and just stacking areas and burning down speak volumes about how lazy the dungeon designers were.

People can poo on Blizzard all they want, and I don’t like them much myself, but dungeons in this game make me consider returning to WoW… which is probably another reason I stay out of them.

Guild wars 2 moving towards the holy trinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Milkduds.7109

Milkduds.7109

Shocked to see people stand up for the stale meta of this game. Dungeons in this game could be SO much more.

Forget the trinity. Just make more playstyles viable. Wanna hybrid support/DPS? Go for it. Wanna hybrid tank/heal? Go for it. Wanna hybrid range/melee DPS? Go for it.

Forget trinity. Forget that garbage that WoW put into your mind. Go back to the classic RPG’s, where imagination was king, and the only limit was our own ideas.

We don’t need the trinity, but we also need a game that allows something besides “STRAIGHT DPS D00D” to be viable. Otherwise, the PvE will continue to suffer and be extremely bland.

Because why not???

On a serious note, the amount of hype that was generated today on twitch and on pax was amazing and I can’t wait for the launch.

Perhaps enough to sell me right there. The idea of the precursor as a progression system seems extremely tantalizing.

GW2: The Waiting Game

Milkduds.7109

Instead of “staying here and waiting” why don’t you go play something else until Heart of Thorns comes out? I’m currently deep into Warlords of Draenor and having the time of my life with it. Chances are, when HoT comes out I’ll be winding down with WoW, so here I come back to GW2!

Why “sit and wait”? It will be ready when it is ready. Go do something else. Go play something else. I play WoW AND this in separate increments and both games make me appreciate the other even more. I also play the Blizzard MOBA and before that DotA 2. Sometimes single player games too.

Don’t sit and wait. Be proactive and do something. Work out, meet new friends, study philosophy, visit local places of worship in your area and learn about their cultures and people. Try new foods.

Sheesh, folks.

As far as the price goes, plenty of people will buy it. Hold off for a week after launch, maybe two, and get the pulse of the community then if you are that concerned. I usually do this.

Posted by: Milkduds.7109

Milkduds.7109

Probably. Most likely. I will wait for it to launch first and give it a week to see what people are saying about it.

I think Pax was mostly just more hype. I didn’t feel we got a whole lot of info about the expansion itself, just general info: new profession, new areas, new group stuff.

Pretty much stuff you could assume being there without them telling you about it. I wasn’t really surprised by the reveal as much as it just confirmed my suspicion. I’ve seen enough MMO expansions to know what they generally contain.

It’s the stuff they tell us in the coming weeks, the real meat and potatoes particulars, that will decide whether this is worth REALLY being interested in. Their track record is mixed for me. I love the IDEA of a lot of the things they present, but sometimes the reality is a lot different.

I will however be using this weekend to return to the game and play an Elementalist. I’ve done a warrior and ranger up to level cap, and a thief up to around 40. Time to get my magic on.

Edit: would like to add that I have tried the advice of setting the DNS to Google and this has no corrected the issue. I had also verified that no firewall or 3rd party program could possibly be interfering with this connection.

And I can tell you, as a woman, you are aggravating ALL of your female players. We aren’t like guys. It’s a neurological fact combat in games does NOTHING for us. The little reward centers in the brain that says “This is fun!” don’t light up for us in combat like they would for me. Monotony is monotony to us. That’s it. It’s that simple. You can’t mask it to woman by forcing us to do combat. So forcing onto new players a painfully unnecessary leveling system just tells every girl in this game, ‘Go find something better to do with your life. This is no longer fun. It’s a job."

.

I’d like to perhaps see evidence via scientific study/research somewhere of this “fact” that you brazenly have put forth.

That’s a -pretty huge- claim you just made.

:C Bye Bye GW2... for now.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Milkduds.7109

Somehow my computer has worsened over time and GW2 has become all laggy for me. It wasn’t like this for me at first. My PC runs other games pretty well so I was planning to fix my PC so I could go back to GW2. Then I thought… why would I want that?

I haven’t played for around 4 weeks now. I logged in once or twice but I had no clue what I was coming back to. A game where you have 5 level 80 chars but know nothing to do isn’t really worth coming back to no?

Some of GW2’s features are enjoyable. And overall I really like GW2. Otherwise I wouldn’t be posting here. But with all the oppotunities to PvP/ WvwvW I am still very upset no work is being put in rewarded 1v1 PvP. Sure you can BUY your own PvPserver so you can do 1v1 games. But it’s nothing like an actual 1v1 Arena with achievements/ rewards/ armor based on that. Not everyone feels like claiming forts all day long and listening to a screaming leader while being r*ped 5 to 1 by a different server.

Untill that is introduced. I don’t think I’ll bother coming back. Which really bums me out since I love the GW2 community over most of the other games I play.

Please Anet… get working to content and platforms that people are ACTUALLY waiting for, use your imagination instead of letting the ship of the last living story crash and create a whole new story around that… it’s rather boring.

Hope to come back in the future. X

That sucks to hear about your performance in-game. Maybe your system needs some looking at or is it -only- happening with GW2? Maybe a clean re-install of your OS. Who knows?

Anyways, I’ve bolded the part of your post that is most interesting to me and I’d like to offer my view of this.

You say you want something akin to a true arena PvP mode, something akin to what is in Wildstar and World of Warcraft I’m assuming. You then tell Arena-Net to “use their imaginations”. The Living Story -is- them using their imaginations. No other MMO does something like the LS, but nearly every MMO under the sun attempts to create some arena type “e-sport” wannabe PvP game mode that leads to nothing but cheesy meta-games and balancing nightmares for the game overall.

The game has WvWvW as well, which is something -most- other MMO’s do not have. Again, something different than the norm, at least as far as “mainstream” MMO’s are concerned. World of Warcraft has never come close to having any kind of feature such as WvWvW. DAoC was it afaik, and now ESO, which received fairly negative press and reviews upon its release, unlike Guild Wars 2 which was very positively received.

I just find it interesting that you ask them to use their imaginations, yet your suggestion is to implement a game mode that is rather myopic and common. I’m not trying to attack you, just pointing that out.

Living Story, at least as a concept, is far more imaginative for the theme park MMO than an arena PvP game mode could ever be or will ever be. Just something to consider.

Are you addicted?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Milkduds.7109

Milkduds.7109

Nah, I don’t find this game addictive at all. I’ll go through spurts of playing it quite a bit, but after a week or so of it being the only thing I’m playing I’ll branch out again or maybe take a break altogether.

I stopped being addicted to MMO’s after WoW’s 3rd expansion. I just couldn’t do it anymore, and nothing in these games seems so utterly original that I feel compelled to sacrifice my entire life to it any longer.

The reason I think I always come back to GW2 is that they seem alright with me not being addicted, whereas games like Wildstar and FFXIV seem to bank on roping people in for a long period of dedicated poopsocking.

My life is in a little bit of a different place now than it was back during Wrath of the Lich King/Burning Crusade as well. I was in a relationship with someone who I didn’t get to see very much, whereas now I’m engaged to someone who really isn’t all that into MMO games.

2 feature packs and 1/2 season, not enough

Milkduds.7109

for those who say how do i know everyone is upset, i never said that, i said many people, or people meaning a bunch of people, i also stated my opinion. I dont think everyone shares my opinion, but i feel its a decent amount.

Im not even knocking the LS and the feature packs, but im saying, if this is indiciative of what we can expect for the future, it wont be enough to keep me, and a number of other players engaged.

As far as saying what i want? new maps, new proffessions, new zones, new weapons new game modes, new challenges etc.

I will rescind slightly though, because upon looking at the page, i thought they had given titles for all the content, but some says coming soon. So it is theoretically possible that the ones that are unrevealed are gold.

hopefully so, because in truth the game has a lot of potential, and a lot of good traits. But its now pretty stagnant. And much of the recently released stuff doesnt seem to be reinvigorating the game.

I don’t think you’ll find anyone who doesn’t want those things. Everyone, in theory, does want more content. After all, it means more things to do. Everyone wins.

The difference is that we’re not all foot stamping and threatening to leave the game along with this unknown mass of other people who aren’t satisfied either.

If you’re not happy with the game right now… then leave! You’ve lost no money on a subscription, and in the event that something catches your eye here it is as easy as re-installing and jumping back in. No $15 to risk.

What more could you ask for in the event of wanting to give a game another shot? I’m always going off to check out new things then coming back, and Guild Wars’ design is welcoming and encouraging of that.

I have no doubt they will be releasing more stuff in the coming year. They care about this game and they obviously have confidence in their vision for it. I wouldn’t be too worried about them just leaving the game in the cold. This game is a success whether X-fire or Twitch or w/e else other dubious metric no one over 25 cares about says so or not.

The game is in a constant state of development just like every other MMO. Go talk to the WoW crowd. They’ve been doing the same raid for over a year now, and with the way some of them act, you’d think Blizzard has just stopped developing entirely and they weren’t getting a new expansion in a few months. Glass half empty.

Milkduds.7109

I see the general forums haven’t changed one bit since about a month after launch.

A lot of people like the game and are happy with the model and direction they have chosen. I’ve tried every MMO on the market and I -always- come back to this one. I love the living story. I finally “got it” in regards to Guild Wars when I played the Scarlet saga. I had a lot of fun! I love the cute holiday events, the design of the world, the questing design, the events, going around killing World Bosses, WvW, sPvP… I enjoy all of it. My favorite thing though? Living story!

Recently I tried Wildstar. You know, that game that’s all about END GAME and GEAR PROGRESSION and all the things the people on this forum are always kittening on about? That one?

I left after two months and -gasp- here I am! Back in Tyria! Leveling yet another character and having fun.

People need to get some perspective. A lot of people enjoy this game and its unique direction. A lot of us have done the raiding thing, the arena pvp thing, the log in for “sanctioned gaming time” 4 nights a week thing… and we’re over it… and we’re happy here. A lot of people just like this game. Get over it.

What they do is more than enough. Could things be better? Of course. But show me -anything- in life that couldnt’ possibly be better. The difference is that the people on most video game forums are glass half empty people.

I don’t need “twitch viewers” or pop culture madness to validate my game of choice. I don’t need to be assured by legions of the lowest common denominator that my game of choice is “SO AWESOME.” I’d prefer those people to stay in games like WoW, which were clearly designed for a mass market. Nothing wrong with that.

The mass market has their playground, the hardcore MMO gamer have their playground again via Wildstar, the plotting social climbers have their playground in EVE.

Can we please have our playground in Tyria without all you try-hards coming on here spouting on about “Twitch viewer numbers” and your own lack of imagination in regards to what to occupy yourself with in game?

The game has been out for nearly 2 years and people still come and kitten up the forums with threads like this.

THIS IS NOT A RAIDING GAME. IT IS NOT AN ARENA JUNKIE GAME. IT IS NOT A MIN/MAX GAME.

It is its own thing and it does it very well, which is why it has been successful. Take a glance over at the graveyard of games that just tried to do the same old theme park formula and you may appreciate this game’s design a little more.

If you need a clear carrot, then clearly this game isn’t for you. Sorry! They never, ever advertised this game as something that was being geared towards an end-game focused progression design. I am glad for that, as are many other people who enjoy this game for what it is.

Seriously. 2 years in. Every time I return to play some GW2 I check the forums and this thread or some iteration of it is ALWAYS kittenting up the room.

Purposeful severing of ties to GW1?

Divinity’s Reach ftw?

LA won’t be destroyed that much, too much of personal storyline is invested in LA. Unless they’re going to revamp everyone’s personal storylines, they’re not going to change LA that much.

Exactly. This. I highly doubt they are just going to level it. They would have to, like you said, go back and change the Personal Story, but since the PS takes place about a year (maybe even more at this point) before the current events of Living World it would make no sense whatsoever.

They could “transport you back in time” since the story itself is instanced, but that would be tacky. I never dug the “time warp” thing in World of Warcraft. I hope they don’t start doing it here.

As it stands, the story happens a year or so before the current lore of GW2, but you never feel like you’re going back in time to complete the story. It still feels relevant to the game as whole. It’s pulled off quite nicely as a matter of fact.

No cheesy retconning or time warping or whatever you want to call it A-Net! Don’t totally wipe LA out! Just hurt it a little!

Also, to the OP, I didn’t play Gw1 so I don’t have the sentimental attachment, but I can understand where you are coming from. I felt similarly once Blizzard changed big portions of the WoW world for an expansion. It really nose-dived the game for me because it was like I didn’t know it anymore. I’m sorry you feel like they have deviated too far from what the game is to you, especially in terms of the world itself. That’s a crappy feeling to have.

I would tell you to just try and appreciate it for what it has become, but when I was in your position I was unable to do just that, so I’ll save you the empty advice.

Thanks for the friendly responses, all.

I’m willing to accept that maybe the downed state is something I’m just having to get used to. I’m also willing to accept that sometimes backing off is just what I have to do. Thanks for the tips about stealthing and finishing. I didn’t know I could actually do that. I thought finishing would break stealth!

Right now I’m using a Dagger/Pistol setup with a Short Bow in the switch slot. I’m finding the Short Bow useful when I just don’t feel safe going into the big zergs for capture points and honestly it works out sometimes.

I’ve tried running Sword/Dagger and really didn’t like it. Dagger/Dagger felt pretty decent. So far I’m enjoying the Dagger/Pistol the most. As for my setup, I was running full power, crit, condition for awhile, but I dropped the points in condition and put them in vitality.

I then swapped out crit runes on my gear for runes of Melandru and BOY has it made a difference in survivability. I would recommend to ANYONE struggling with the condition builds to swap out to some Melandru runes. It feels like it is making a big bit of difference for me.

One thing I am finding with the thief is that they are great “saboteurs”. I love going and beating on a gate, destroying a treb, etc. I’ve spent entire games just blowing up capture points with a trebuchet and ultimately winning. Great “gun gankers” for Skyhammer too.

Thanks for the feedback and tips all.

Is there a matchmaking system in this game? I get it, the hotjoin thing is what it is… but couldn’t it be done better? It’s just anything goes with leaving and AFK’ing. Surely there must be a better system than this.

As for the tournaments. I’ve done solo tournaments and found the marginally better then hotjoin games. My main issue with those are the wait times. I’ve waited over 10 minutes at prime time for these games to pop. It’s very boring. Surely there are more people PvP’ing. Maybe cross server PvP is needed? How do people on empty servers handle this?

Overall I think the PvP has potential. It feels like a lot of the pieces are in place, but it just needs more work. It needs more game modes for starters, it needs to have some of the damage looked at, it needs to have a better, respectable matchmaking system, and it needs to have better visuals in order to indicate what is going on.

There are many things that have me feeling like, compared to the PvE of this game, sPvP is an afterthought.

I’ll write a similar post once I spend some time in WvWvW for those folks. Don’t think I’m picking on you sPvP guys. I WANT to get into this game mode. I’ve spent all of my recent free time on it, but I feel like it has some major issues going on that probably push a lot of people away from it.

For the past week or so I’ve been doing nothing but Spvp on a thief that I made and having mixed feeling about it. I figured I’d come here and share my thoughts just like I did about the PvE aspect of the game. (Which I scored very favorably btw)

First, the good stuff. I really like the departure from “tab target” combat. It makes the game feel more engaging, faster, and definitely more dangerous. It can be a lot of fun when you take someone out because you really feel like you did something right or well. It’s validating.

The same goes with the gear. I’m engaged now, back in school again, and about to begin volunteering at a community center here in my city. I still love gaming, and I love being good at gaming, but I simply don’t have time to “pay a pound of flesh” anymore when it comes to games. As much as I loved the arena system of WoW, I could never bring myself to commit to the almost masochistic grind that the gear was in that game. I appreciate being able to “jump right in” with the gear and build of my choice in GW2. It certainly is a fine attribute.

Some of the maps are a lot of fun. My favorites are the one where there is the keep defense objective and the one where you can run the orb to capture points. Skyhammer can be fun too if you have a person or two who can check in on the gun every now and then.

Now for some other points of view…

While some of the maps are fun… there aren’t many, and there is only one objective: domination. Why? Was this intentional to not have any other game modes included in the game? Aside from the fact that it just gets old very quickly (I HATED Arathi Basin in World of Warcraft btw) it creates a disadvantage for some classes.

The game objective is clear: capture and hold points. The problem is that some classes are better at holding points than others. As a thief if I try to jump into the circle during a huge skirmish I am very likely to get blown up very quickly. The classes who shine in the capture point mode are the ones who can hold their ground. Thieves are not designed to “hold your ground” with. They are flighty by nature. It has led to some really frustrating moments.

Being a thief I conceptualize myself as something of a roamer who picks off ranged classes, weak “deserters” trying to run away, or people caught out of position trying to take a point on their own. This is well and fine -sometimes-, but since the game seems to revolve around zerging from one point or another, I find my class role very limited. Stack this on top of the fact that the maps are very small, so the odds of me actually getting a fair 1v1 match up is rare. Which leads to my next point:

The downed state mechanic. It’s awful. >.< As much as I enjoy driving my banner into someone and seeing a deer dance around or a giant smash them or w/e… I think this mechanic is REALLY frustrating to deal with. I’ve had several infuriating moments with it. They pretty much revolve around me downing someone, one of their friends coming over, and me either having to fall back and lose the kill, try to kill their friend while they regen and damage me, or try to burst them down while their friend either kills me or heals them. Obviously every one of those options suck.

I feel like this game simply isn’t friendly to thieves. Or, more accurately, spvp isn’t friendly to thieves. The maps are small, the game favors zerging, the downed state can quickly turn a fight you have just won into a fight you have just lost, and trying to enter into big battles for points is often suicide for a class as squishy as the thief.

Another big issue I’ve been having is dealing with the prevalence of condition based damage. I find myself quickly having to burn a heal and another condition cleansing spell in order to stay alive. By the time those conditions are re-applied, my cleaners are still on CD, which usually leads to my imminent doom. Sometimes I have fought necromancers who literally cover me in dots before I have done any amount of damage to them. Maybe this is an L2P issue… which leads me to my NEXT point:

“L2P” is very hard with how particle effects work, the lack of cast bars, and the general amount of nebulousness the combat in this game shrouds itself in. With the amount of explosions, red circles, conditions killing you, etc going on, its very, VERY difficult (and sort of absurd) to be able to keep track of everyone’s casting animations. Trying to dodge specific spells is hard enough, trying to dodge specific spells between 5 players, red circles, keeping track of your OWN abilities and damage is even harder. It’s nearly impossible. Often times I end up dead in a hurricane of explosions, flames, debuffs, minions, arrows, smoke, gas, you name it… It’s just very overwhelming.

Even if you take away raid in wow, wow don’t have less content than gw2.

You should go out to the open world in GW2. Besides the few events which drop dragonite ore, it’s pretty empty.

I go into the world daily. Everyday. That’s how I play the game. I’m sorry, but my experiences on Tarnished Coast do not match up with yours.

You’ve yet to address any points I’ve made. Honestly, you haven’t made any points really at all. I mean, really, I type these posts full of meat for you to respond to and you give me back a half microwaved McDonald’s hamburger of a post.

There is a big difference between WoW and Guild Wars 2. I played WoW for about 6 years regularly. I’m not going to measure out our “credentials” when it comes to that game.

WoW is way different, it’s based on an entirely different model of progression, it’s based on a gear treadmill, it thrives on instanced content, it renders its world entirely useless with every update, and it’s a subscription based game.

You’re problem is that you do not understand the fundamental differences between the two design philosophies of the game. I cannot make you understand this.

I’m not making a joke of WoW. I’m being serious. WoW is over. This is not WoW. This is Guild Wars 2. This is not a game that revolves around “getting to the end” and then slow-drip heroin like grinding in one raid instance for months salivating like an idiot over +20 stamina upgrades.

If that’s your deal, then you know where to go. Plenty of people still trying to cash in on that model.

If you don’t believe me that the games are fundamentally different: you will be able to purchase a level 90 character in WoW in just a few months. Not different? My kitten .

Also, I’d love to hear you justify spending over 1/4 of a year’s worth of time in this game that is less than 2 years old while still complaining that there is nothing to do in it and you are owed content when a new update came out yesterday and before that about 2 weeks ago.

Really, I’m on the edge of my kittening seat.

That’s what an “endgamer” would have you believe. If you’re not doing that, then good! You haven’t devolved into n “endgamer” yet.

Maybe people are evolving. Daiblo 3 have a good 1 hour of content. People getting sick of doing the same 1 hour content over and over again.

That’s why I quit Diablo3 to play GW2. Diablo have 1 hour of non-repeatable content while GW2 have hundreds of hours of it.

After 8 map completion. Farmed the same instance hundred of times, did the same fractal hundred of times. I can’t stand to play GW2 any more.

I logon everyday to do daily. That’s all I can stand doing, and waiting for the next patch seemed to be the endgame for me in GW2.

I have fun in GW2. I think it have hundreds of hours of fun content. I just dont’ think it have 3756 hours of it, which is my playing hours right now.

Seems like you’ve gotten more than your money’s worth. It’s not about evolution, it’s about people having insane expectations. No one is paying a subscription for Diablo 3, they are not owed content.

You aren’t paying a sub for this game. You are not owed content. You get it anyways in the form of mini-updates and (probably I’d guess) a fairly large one later this year, yet still you kitten.

It’s not about “evolution.” That’s bullkitten. It’s about people being entitled and not understanding the concept of “move on”. You sink hundreds of hours into something and get bored? Congratulations, you’re a natural human being who seeks new experiences. Maybe step outside of your monitor and, oh, you know, do something else? Maybe take a break until something seems fresh again?

The advent of the internet and games being online has led to this idea that games ought to just be patched with brand spanking new content at the whims of players. Not only is it an entitled attitude, but its nigh impossible for developers to reasonably keep up with.

Arena-Net busts their kitten with the frequency of their updates. Yet it’s not good enough and people still kitten.

Human evolution? More like bored child who can’t be bothered to entertain him/herself-volution. There are a million things to do in this world. Why do you expect a game developer to baby sit your free time and provide you with some kind of slow-drip needle heroin addiction of a game?

Once more: the WoW days are over. I mean, dude, you admit to playing this game for over 3 THOUSAND 5 HUNDRED hours, near 4 thousand. Do you realize that there are only 8,765 hours in 1 year?

Chew on that for a minute.

End game is actually a term that has been used since Ultima Online. It’s in reference to what you’re supposed to do once you’ve gotten your character completely skilled/leveled up.

It means so much more than that now. People literally buy games now, install them, and ask, “So what is endgame?”.

The culture of “Endgame is real game” is the kittentiest thing I’ve ever seen in this hobby.

Seriously, I never came across this term “endgame” before in any game I played until Diablo III. Which is funny, because I played Diablo II to death and I never heard this term mentioned.

Apparently it’s something that sprang out of WoW, which I never played, and is an expected “feature” of any MMORPG today.

And I say to that: kitten.

Just keep playing the game as always. It’s fun to play, right? That’s why you keep playing.

It’s like Chess. You keep playing chess over and over because it’s fun, right? There is no “endgame” outside of the literal endgame at the end of each game. If you won your school varsity tournament, do now consider it “over” and look for an “endgame” as if you have “graduated” from playing varsity tournaments?

Or is it like a relationship between a boy and a girl, you date, you kiss, you have have sex, get married, then now you’re looking forward to the “endgame?” Nay, it started from love when you were in courtship, you still love after marriage, right? Or no? Then yeah maybe it’s because there was no love and you’re looking for some “endgame.” When you’re supposed to be fine just loving each other.

Same with GW2. You’re supposed to be enjoying the game, right? If you enjoy it, that should be reason enough to keep playing whatever you’ve been playing all along, “endgames” are not needed.

Wow, someone gets it! Applause for you!

People don’t realize how “endgame” killed WoW. The entire experience of Warcraft became centered around instanced “endgame” content just to satisfy people who couldn’t stand to step away from the game for 2 months while something cool was developed. The game has become this insular, instanced, crap-fest where everyone lives in one raid for months, burns out, then demands more “endgame” in the form of another boring raid.

The result is that low level content is left in the dust. The “world” of Warcraft is literally a dead corpse that players mock as “irrelevant”, “useless”, and “obsolete”. Why? BECAUSE IT’S NOT ENDGAME.

Endgame kills games. It ruins the entire experience. It is a game that devs cannot win because they cannot keep up with the demand for it and they end up neglecting a whole segment of their playerbase (new players, returning players, explorer/pvp/casual players) for the endgame junkies.

It was absurd in Diablo III. It’s like people expected raids or some kind of e-sport once they geared out their character. Did they forget what Diablo II was like?

As for GW2… this game was NEVER advertised as an “endgame” focused game. If I ever hear someone in GW2 say “THE GAME STARTS AT LEVEL CAP” I will know that it has jumped the shark, because that’s when WoW became the lamest word in the dictionary.

People need to get over this endgame craze and just enjoy the journey. Don’t enjoy journeys, adventures, and playing for fun? You’re in the WRONG genre. The WoW days are over.

This is going back to my topic about event scaling to some degree, but I’ll elaborate, and yes, I know this might be an unpopular opinion but: Orr kind of sucks. There, I said it. The more I journey around Orr, the more I love the visual realization of it. It’s a perfectly realized city of darkness that has been under the ocean for a long, long time and it shows. It’s very cool. On the other hand, the hordes of undead in my way (And yes, I know they are Zhaitan’s army and this is his literal stronghold, but running around as a solo player is awful, awful, awful. The waypoints seem to always be contested, and at times I’m unable to even figure out how to uncontest them. Even on Tarnished Coast the population in the Orr zones seems to be thin, so often the zone is locked in an eternal state of Zhaitan domination. It’s not a fun place to play. Which leads in to my last and final observation:

Champ trains in Queensdale are the most cheeseball, lame, uninspiring, no effort way to play the game once you hit 80. It’s my personal opinion that there is something very wrong with the game if zerging down easy level 10 champions is the most rewarding, efficient, or whatever way to play the game. There has got to be something done about this. Not only is it lame from a gameplay perspective, but from a social perspective it doesn’t bring people together in a meaningful way (Read: Marionette), and it doesn’t lend itself to a believable world. It’s just lame. Let me be as blunt as possible with my feelings here: Fix it. Nerf it. Burn it. Better yet: make something better. Maybe Orr was supposed to be the intended “end game” farming zone? If so, then make some sweeping changes to Orr. The potential is there, but like I said, as of now for whatever reason the zone is empty. I haven’t been playing the game long enough to comment on the subtle reasons why, but I know that the Queensdale champ train appears to be pure boring mode. Will I be penalized for not taking part in such activities?

Can’t comment on PvP because I haven’t touched it, but looks promising!

Overall, despite my criticisms, I am really, really enjoying Guild Wars 2 and I’m thrilled I gave it another shot. It has truly grown on me. For the first time in many years I am feeling the joy of playing a true MMO again. A game that empowers servers to band together, creates a world lovingly, and engages my gamer spirit with great gameplay.

So, here is to many more moons in Tyria and the future.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the game.

The dungeons themselves range from extremely fun to rage heard round the world due to poor team cohesion and communication. The lack of the trinity roles is sometimes really cool, and other times really annoying. The poetic chaos of Guild Wars is either great, or awful. I really haven’t seen an in between when running dungeons. They work out, or they are nightmares that take over an hour. I ran Honor of the Waves last night and literally was about to scratch my face off by the time we killed the final boss. Sometimes there just seems to be a real lack of any kind of cohesion when it comes to class roles. I know it is there, but perhaps the game could facilitate this more effectively somehow? The dungeon design itself is fantastic though. I really enjoy the sense of place and the layout of the dungeons. I can’t wait to try Explorable Mode soon.

The Personal Story, while oft criticized and a victim of several embarrassing tropes, is actually quite fun. It’s length is respectable, and I’ve come to really enjoy it especially as I grew in levels and got in to the more meaty aspects of the lore. It has encouraged me to learn more about the world of Tyria that I was previously entirely unfamiliar with and has made me grow attached to my character in a cool way. I could point out the sometimes poor V.A. or the cheesy dialogue or this or that, but I’m not, because it takes a lot for me to enjoy a story in a video game and you guys have pulled that off. Kudos. More Personal Story in the future please?

I think the Dynamic Event system is an absolute blast, but my one complaint about it would be that sometimes events need to scale a little bit better. I know things like Champions are meant to be taken on with more than two people, but sometimes that’s all you have, especially on servers like Isle of Janthir. I find myself guesting nearly 24/7 to Tarnished Coast because I simply grew tired of not being able to complete events due to lack of people. I love the way this game encourages the multiplayer, but when I’m downright prohibited from accomplishing things due to lack of people in the area, something entirely out of my control as a player, it gets lame. Better scaling could fix this, and I’d be inclined to actually play on Isle of Janthir instead of just guesting.

Since it’s a hot topic: the marionette event is excellent. It simply is. It’s some of the most fun I’ve had in an MMO in a long, long time. It rekindled the genre for me in a big way, and I want to thank you guys for having the courage to put such content into the game considering the trend for the last few years has been to instance, instance, instance and dilute server communities into insular guilds. So, again, kudos. I love this event and look forward to more like it in the future. I hope the majority of the community understand what a special potential they have here with content like this and a developer willing to supply it. Overall I think the Living World approach is brilliant and feels authentic in building the core fantasy of the world.

So, I just recently came back to Guild Wars 2. That’s not to say that I ever really played it in the first place. I was one of the many hundreds or maybe thousands of players who played the game when it launched, but for whatever reason lost interest in it soon after.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked a great many things about the game but it was missing the hook to draw me in for good, or maybe I was just in a strange place in my life at the time. Probably more the latter. Times have changed though, and what’s old is new again. I decided to come back to Guild Wars 2 at the start of this year and have been very pleased with my decision to do so.

I just hit 80 for the first time on Norn warrior and am a few missions off from finishing up the story campaign. I’ve killed Marionette, wiped on Wurm, found some cool gear, done just about every Story Mode dungeon, filled tons of hearts, and taken down a lot of Champs as the underdog. I figure it’s about time to give my thoughts about the game…

I think the game is a visual feast. The art team just really nailed it and knocked it out of the park. I’ve always felt this way though. The game is an absolutely masterpiece to look at, and I think the world of Tyria feels very authentic and alive. It’s a great fantasy world, and it is believable insofar as fantasy worlds go. It “feels” like a world, not just a game. That’s important and rare.

The music leaves a lot to be desired however. For the pieces he did create, Soule has done a great job, but they are too few and far in between. The themes that we hear in the game become all too familiar all too fast. It’s cool to have recurring themes in music, but entire pieces are used and re-used too, too much. The score could have been lengthened considerably in my opinion.

Combat is, for the most part, pretty swell. Coming from the background of World of Warcraft I’ve really appreciate the dynamic, fluid, and active combat system of this game. It’s very pro-active and challenging, and rewards a crafty player who times his or her toolkit perfectly and has some finesse at the keyboard. Very cool.

On the other hand, I feel the game is just a little too punishing towards melee players. Cutting my teeth on the game as a melee warrior has, at times, been a rage inducing nightmare. The particle effects are simply too thick at times to even see the moves you need to dodge, being stunned for days is a thing, and melee in general just seem prone to be at more of a disadvantage when it comes to survival. I often feel pressured into just using my bow or rifle for the majority of certain encounters for fear of losing my life and being a liability to my team. Not fun.

That message comes up every time Windows detects an unclean shutdown.

Correct, but depending on the kind of shutdown event viewer will at least have some codes to work with, a minidump will generate for WhoCrashed and whatnot.

None of this happens. It makes it about 1,000x more annoying to troubleshoot.

Even if your point is proven in a sense about the fact that underclocking has fixed the problem so it points to a hardware issue, that doesn’t mean that your initial advice of “sounds like the card is dying” was any good.

The card isn’t dying. RAM isn’t going bad. Drives aren’t corrupted. Processor isn’t sparking out.

Clearly it’s something about the way the hardware is interfacing with Guild Wars 2. It’s not “bad hardware”. So his GTX ti using it’s out of the box settings just poops on itself during Guild Wars 2… it’s not “bad hardware”, because as you’ve already stated people with lesser technology are playing just fine, myself included since I use a GTX 560, albeit a better CPU.

Why would a card at factory clocks, despite being “ti”, need to be underclocked in order to run Guild Wars 2 with stability? Good temps, and no other video errors of any kind in sight…

This is confirming that his card is bad? I don’t buy it. There is an error, maybe an error somewhere with the hardware and the game, but a BAD card? As in “replace it”? Nope.

How did you assert that the system really is stable if you don’t wanna run some basic stability checks like memtest, prime95, or Heaven? “Take my word for it” isn’t a valid answer here given any electrical component can degrade over time. From what I remember, WoW, D3, and DotA2 don’t even come close to stressing a system like GW2 does.

He isn’t getting stop errors in the sense of his sytem turning blue with a vague code, most of the time the system doesn’t even generate a legitimate bugcheck or stop code. Just lines of zeros. It’s clearly a video issue.

Legitimate bugcheck? Lines of zeros? Do explain.

IMO, this sounds like a dying 660. Pull the card and try it in your own system. Given the frequency of the crashes, it shouldn’t take long to rule this out.

The system doesn’t “Blue screen” in the traditional sense. Often when you look at event viewer it is just a generic “the computer unexpectedly restarted” error. There isn’t anything like 0×8 or 0×7f. It’s just very general.

I mean, you can play the whole “The game I run fine requires an NASA computer, and everyone who has a problem just has failing/bad hardware”, but from what I’ve gathered, this grey/black screen thing is… a big thing that has been going on since launch.

It seems like it is driver related, but at the same time updating the drivers like crazy didn’t help. Underclocking the card has seemed to help it, which is a “fix” (lol?) that I’ve seen proposed on various websites in regards to THIS GAME and THIS GAME alone when it comes to this issue.

This is why I don’t ask for computer help online. Nerdlingers can’t accept that people besides themselves know how to do basic computer upkeep and have stable systems. Arena-Net’s best advice for troubleshooting this: go into Nvidia control panel and mess with a setting.

Really? With an issue this widespread that has been occurring since launch I don’t think you can just write people off as morons who needs to buy new RAM and live on Memtest waiting for an error to pop up or switch their video cards everytime Nvidia can’t write a good driver or a developer conflicts with something somewhere.

We put these things on to our systems, and pay money, with good faith. When they start to have problems, don’t get smart with me like I’m a moron and act like I’m to blame because I don’t want to kitten through things I know aren’t a problem. I run my systems everyday: you do not.

So, let’s beat this dead horse, shall we?

My boyfriend has recently started to play GW2 and is experiencing the Black/Grey screen error and it has been getting worse over time. Initially it would happen intermittently maybe once a day, now it is happening every 10 minutes. Sometimes the screen will go black, music will continue, and his driver will recover. Most of the time though the computer just locks up with a grey or black screen and restarts. Like I said, it is getting worse over time, now happening every 10 minutes or so. We are worried that we are going to start causing permanent hardware damage at this rate.

His specs:

Intel i5 3570k @ 3.4 GhZ Ivybridge
Nvidia GTX 660 ti
8 Gb RAM
750 Watt PSU

This error is only occurring during GW2. It is not happening during normal browsing or use and it is not occurring during other games. World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, DotA 2 all run fine.

So far I’ve had him update his driver to the newest 332.21 drivers. It crashed. I had him roll back to 314.22 and it started to crash even more frequently, so that’s not it. We’ve downloaded EVGA Precision and fiddled with fans and such to watch the temps in the system and they are fine.

So he went drastic, he’s that kind of guy, and totally re-installed Windows. Still crashes.

Now, I know everyone is going to tell me to download Memtest on his system and what not… but c’mon guys. Guild Wars 2 is the only new thing introduced into his stable system and suddenly it’s crash after crash only in that application. He isn’t getting stop errors in the sense of his sytem turning blue with a vague code, most of the time the system doesn’t even generate a legitimate bugcheck or stop code. Just lines of zeros. It’s clearly a video issue.

Also, before this idea is brought up: we’re hardwired in. We’ve tested it both hardwired and with wifi and still get the crashes.

I’m going to have him underclock his card and see if that works, but like I said, it’s getting to a point where he doesn’t want to keep doing this for fear of causing some kind of damage. I can’t really blame him.

We really enjoy this game, but if this can’t get sorted we’re not going to have a choice but to move on. We don’t have the money to play Upgrade Roulette.

Any good suggestions? “Update drivers, windows updates” are not suggestions btw.

-They lack more do-able large scale PvE. With introduction of the Worms and Marionette this is very fresh and new, but I am talking more along the lines of raiding with your friends in groups larger than 5 and without complete strangers to have to rely on and pray they do the objective right. Groups of 10-50 dungeons (or raids) are what normal PVE players crave and love in video games. Make these dungeons challenging (yet due-able, i mean come on that worm is just stupid).

I totally disagree. MANY of us are here because this game does not have instanced raid content that you get walled in to at end game. After years of that I am done w/ it and I would not be sad if I never encountered it again.

Their PvE content tugs at the strings of what MMO’s should be about: joining together with large groups and defeating a challenge in the WORLD. Entire servers rejoice when they down Mari or Wurm.

Raid instances go against this philosophy because they just don’t allow for things like that to happen. They are insular experiences for a small group of people and divides servers up into little cliques. I don’t think that’s what this game has ever wanted to encourage. From level 1 you are pushed to engage with your entire server, not just your 24 other guild mates. I love it.

Also, when you start getting in to the gated end game raiding content you naturally get in to the power creep gear treadmill. Yet again something this game has tried to distance itself from, and yet again something that has attracted many of us to the game.

As a veteran raider from Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King in WoW I can say without a doubt in my mind that I would never, ever want to go through that again. It would change Guild Wars 2 fundamentally and turn it into something it was never supposed to be. That ship sailed for me a long time ago.

More open world content that unites the server in a big way, not insular raid dungeons that lead to pathetic elitism.

I don’t disagree with your post entirely though, they do need more content, but they are always in development. It’s not fair to say they aren’t releasing new things. Who knows what this year holds for Guild Wars 2. The game is not even 2 years old yet.

Im a civil engineer and I Work 60-70 hours a week in the field. I love this game and really enjoy the time I get to play it. Ive got 4 level 80s, two with map completion, all in at least exotics or better. I unload real money on the gem store regularly.

Im getting discouraged by content like tequila and the worm/marionette because I have not completed any of these, not even once. I realize that if I log at the exact right time after guesting to the correct server and sitting in the zone for an hour+ to get a spot then maybe I have a chance to complete these but that’s not realistic for me.

I have a wife and a 3 year old, they need my time too.

At least I have Spvp solo Q, hot join. If it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t have to gear grind to be on equal footing Id have never bought this game. On a side not that’s why I don’t do WVWVW, because of the ascended gear power creep they implemented.

Back before I got a real life I loved to spvp in WAR and later SWTOR and Rift for a time. So I consider myself a kitten fine player.

Please make content for people like me. We are the ones who actually bring money into your pocket with our real jobs and gem store purchases.

cut out the garbage with the power creep gear grind nonsense, make some more content that I as a great player can do on my own schedule without needing to depend on having no life and the stars aligning.

They put out less than a handful of bosses that are challenging and can’t just be done in a night and out come the wallet warriors and people who, with a 60 hour a week schedule, a wife, and a small child, have no business playing a video game anyways.

So I am not allowed to play video games because I have a full time job and a family? Are you God? Because if you are, can I please have permission to play a video game for like an hour or two a week…is that okay with you? I mean I know you’re busy making sure internet kittens have electricity and internet connection, but if you could spare a few moments of you time for me, that would be great.

You can take me entirely out of context all you like. I don’t care if you have a job or w/e. I have a life too. It’s not my problem and my life isn’t your problem. Deal with it.

No one is entitled to beat anything. You can beat 99% of the content in this game with relative ease. If you want to pretend like you’re being discriminated against or something because you don’t live in a basement (really, who does, do people believe this myth?) be my guest, but it doesn’t work on me. I’ve been playing MMO’s for too long now to feel sorry for the people who just want to press a button and win. Especially in a game that is already tailored to a more casual, easy come easy go approach such as this one.

So, they put in a couple of fights that you can’t just queue up for and do “on your time” and by your utter convenience and suddenly this is a big deal? You think you’re the only type of player who plays this game? Plenty of people here are willing to put in the time, casual and hardcore, and try and down these events. Nothing is stopping you except for your own real world commitments which is not anyone else’s problem.

The majority of the game is very casual friendly. It’s not dependant on gear. It’s not a hardcore raid or die game by any stretch of the imagination. Most content is catered towards people like you, and people who just want to take the game at their own pace.

They put out less than a handful of bosses that are challenging and can’t just be done in a night and out come the wallet warriors and people who, with a 60 hour a week schedule, a wife, and a small child, have no business playing a video game anyways.

Geez. Reminds me of WoW, except this time there is no excuse for it, because like I said, this isn’t a raid or die game by any definition of the term.

This sort of gets at an entire area of the game that I feel they really need to improve on. “The role play” element of it.

I’m thinking of coming back as well. I have a friend bugging me about the patch on the 21st. I played at launch and lost steam. I came back for the Super Adventure Box or w/e and thought it was a fun little idea, but it didn’t bring me back fully.

What is the patch on the 21st going to be like?

Well age clearly is a factor here. As the the superbox commercial and 8bit in general is homage to some gamers childhood and growing up. Sometime I didn’t grow up with and do not understand or enjoy in any particular way. I do not relate to it in anyway 1 because of my age and 2 because of my interests. So age kinda is a factor.

Essentially, following your logic, you’re saying I need to be over three hundred years old to appreciate Shakespeare?

I don’t understand today’s “gamers”. This is a game, a diversion; its not a career. Playing isn’t your job, nor does it define you in any way. They are designing this game, its their project, their vision, not ours. How entitled the gaming community got is unbelievable. (Not all my rant is about this sole thread, but this forum in general).

Thank you!

“Grrr! I’m mad this game isn’t grimdark! Grrr!”

Been saying this since last night! hahaha!

It’s soooo funny! Like, they didn’t realize this BEFORE the SAB? It took THIS to make them realize? haha

What’s with everyone dolling out their age as a reason for why they don’t like something? Jesus, some of you people are going to be grey, in rockers, and begging to be taken off life support by the time you’re 37 with the way you talk.

“WELL I’M 31 CLEARLY THIS GAME OFFENDS MY SUPERIOR TASTES.”

If you don’t like it fine, but stop acting like “your age” inherently means anything. It only means something if you let it. It’s so annoying to read. I’m all for people not liking things and expressing why, but again, age is inherently meaningless here. We are talking about a video game, not someone trying to attend prom night 15 years after they have graduated from HS.

When did people in their 30s start being so uptight about ‘kids’ games? I know late teens early twenties people get upset about being associated with ‘kids’ but I thought by your 30s you had outgrown that. Live and learn I guess.

I was wondering this too! I don’t know what it’s like to be a 30-something, but man, they are lording their ages over us big time!

If you sell yourself short on some fun because of your age, gosh, that must be so lame! Take the wisdom of age with you, but always keep the wanderlust and open heart of youth with you too! 30’s is SO not old!

guessed ppl will be mad at this.. if I gave a kitten about the storyline I’d prolly be too, thing is, gw2 story isn’t all that special or innovative or anything, it’s just some generic fantasy bs. but yeh lore fans gonna rage

It’s not ENTIRELY outside the realm of possibility in regards to the lore. People like playing games, it’s a product of civilization. Free time is as well.

The Asura are innovators and love technology, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that they would come up with a video game. Not at all.

Now there are obvious pop culture references, like the Asura being named Moto, but the machine itself existing doesn’t seem too crazy. No crazier than us inventing video games once we were able to.

Civilizations love to play. It’s one of the luxuries of being civilized and not a hunter/gatherer tribe.

I think people are referring to the recent Fused Weapon skins when they are citing RNG here.
