Even though I think your point was salient, witty and harmless, I don’t think we’re supposed to discuss infractions within the thread so you probably want to revise this post:

I got an infraction for posting that series of 2’s. GG.

Anyroad, I use 3 when there’s a single melee PvE enemy that party members need to kite, otherwise 2 is always better and 1 is something to get a little extra AoE DPS from if the pressure eases off while you’re still in plague form.

lets make it a skill which deserves the name “reanimator”:

every time a minion dies, there is a 33% chance another one will reappear to take his place to his masters bidding.

I really like the concept, but I don’t think ArenaNet would run with this as it’s only beneficial if you’re running at least 1 minion. Maybe add a chance that if an ally is defeated near the Necromancer, they come back as a zombie for a fixed time with a pair of attacks, a shout (“Brains!”) and a skill that suicides them back to defeated state early. They can use this zombie form either to deal a little extra damage or shuffle their corpses over to a safer location for the res.

Or how about just modifying jagged horrors to have suicide attacks? If the bleeding is to make sure they only hit 0-2 times depending on the target’s distance, then take out the bleeding and make it a flat 1 time.

Mostly every class can obtain pets/objects to act as an AoE target. Engineers can place 5 of them. Other examples include Elementals, ambush traps, and clones.

Also, the extra utility skill the pet has isn’t a role, and none of them do anything that other classes can’t do. Most are a simple stun, buff, or condition.

The Ranger gets them at no opportunity cost. I’m surprised that has to be pointed out.

I only know they are aware of this and said that the only way to switch server … I guess it means it’s intended and that :

or did you separate us so when server transfer will have a cost in gems you will gain profit?

I seriously doubt that’s their intention. There can’t be enough players who would be willing to pay regular transfer fees to play with more than one set of friends over the pond.

I have been wondering if it might relate to staggered peak concurrency: If an EU player is online 0400-0800 UMT, they might arrange with a US player to get guested over to the US servers where the activity will be higher. Once people catch on, there’d be much higher peaks and much lower troughs in activity.

Whatever the reason, I hope they work something out and prioritize friends playing with friends on the list of considerations.

What role does a pet play in combat that can’t be done by other classes?

They can die inexpensively, which makes them risk-free mob pullers when you need to pull.

They count as one unit when a hostile AoE has a limit on the number of units it can affect (except when it’s down).

A portion of your DPS is outsourced to them, which sucks when you’re only DPSing, but it’s a portion of your DPS that keeps going (unless it’s down) when you’re ressing someone or activating an environmental object or shooing your cat off the keyboard. When you’re down yourself and have an opportunity to rally, it’s a huge amount of DPS that doesn’t go down with you (unless it’s also down).

It provides an extra utility skill (unless it’s down), and its automated skills apply conditions as well (unless it’s down).

It looks awfully cute (especially when it’s down).

Grinding for stats was rejected in the design manifesto. If you like gear grinding, good for you, but some people came to this game because its developers had declared grinding would not be here.

You can justify the gear grind as much as you like or declare your inability to conceive of a game that doesn’t have it (despite the fact that you were playing one up until the update), but I can assure you with the utmost confidence that if someone says they do not want it, then they do not want it. They were told that this was a place where they would not get it. Those people were lied to.

I’ll belabour the point because it’s either being missed or ignored; the design manifesto said this: …if you hate traditional MMORPGs, then you should really check out Guild Wars 2. Because, like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun…

Manifestos are not something to be taken lightly because when they’re made they call on people to support the cause that the document declares for, usually by placing a great deal of in trust in one another towards the common interest.

If you don’t know what a manifesto is, look it up. Examples include the GNU Manifesto and The United States Declaration of Independence.

If I am not mistaken, 90% of the threads on in ‘Guild Wars 2 Discussion’ do this. Does it seem dumb now? Columbus once said the World is round…. what an opinion he had!

It was actually quite a common opinion at the time, you can read more about the decline of the Flat Earth theory on Wikipedia.

But yeah, if people didn’t speak out because they lacked complete information surrounding an issue, then not only would most conversations be dull, but there would be a huge reduction in scientific advancement because no one would hypothesize anything at all.

On the other hand, stating an opinion or conjecture as fact, or inferring as much (intentionally or not), should be frowned upon with the most disdainful of furrowed brows. Especially on the internet, where it’s a sure-fire way to start a kittenstorm.

Things can only improve from here. I’m hoping the improvement is in the direction of longer special events and not squeezing content into a weekend. It’s asking too much of busy players and setting really high delivery requirements for the development team; the combination is leading to amplified disappointment and anger. Please aim for something slower next time, ANet, so we have more time to enjoy it and you’ve more time to implement fixes when things go wrong. Also, maybe inbuilt contingencies so that if something goes wrong in a chain of events or activities, you can switch to a plan B.

The ambition is great and if it had all gone smoothly it would have been a fitting way to intro a new map area, but it seems to be too fast too soon.

The ‘Dev Tracker’ subsection is one of the first places I stop by when I visit the forum.

I hope I’m right in assuming that the purpose of the dev tracker is to let visitors quickly see if any of the development team has posted any comments of interest.

However, depending on what time you check in, the dev tracker will often be inundated with what you might call ‘maintenance’ posts: notifications of threads being locked, and notices to keep a thread on-topic.

This can undermine the purpose of the dev tracker; instead of keeping people informed of developer participation in the more vibrant and interesting discussions, it becomes a reference of all the threads that have had to be locked or told to calm down.

Please give mods and devs the ability to discretionally exclude any particular post they make from being listed in the dev tracker system.

It’s on the ArenaNet blog, dated April 27th, 2010 by Mike O’Brien.

I thought it would be an appropriate time to start some discussion about whether the game has met the standards that the studio set for themselves.

Please remember that a lot of opinion will hinge on the interpretation of the intent of the design manifesto (A Manifesto is a declaration of intention and motive, it is not a statement of explicit rules).

The blog entry is here: http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto

There’s also a video version of the Manifesto filled with clips of the development team and set to Jeremy Soule’s epic, rousing music. It’s on Youtube somewhere.

Did you read that blog entry prior to the game (or even its beta)? Does the game live up to your expectations with regard to the manifesto?

Understanding "Gear Progression"

“It all gets back to our basic design philosophy. Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment.” -Mike O’Brien, Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto; April 5th, 2010

What I get from the Ascended/Agony mechanic description: You can’t play against agony-inflicting mobs without getting the gear first.

“So much of traditional MMO combat is rote and repetitive. You execute the same strategy over and over again, just augmented over time with better and better gear. After a while it starts to feel like you’re playing a spreadsheet. Combat needs to be about making creative choices, and it needs to feel immediate, active, and visceral.”

If you don’t have the requisite gear, no creativity is going to save you. As Lindsey Murdock wrote in the recent statement: “The only way to mitigate Agony damage is by building up resistance through Infusions, a new type of upgrade component that can be acquired in the Mystic Forge.”

Munrock.3092

I have friends in NA who play on NA servers because that’s where the community are awake for them. I have friends in the UK who are playing on EU servers because that’s where the community are awake for them. Neither are going to move away from most of their friends for the sake of one.

ANet said there would be a guesting system, and there isn’t. They turned on free transfers because guesting wasn’t ready, and they wanted to make good on their promise. Then they limited it to the point where it no longer makes up for the lack of guesting, before guesting was ready.

So, I cannot play with half of my friends and the only ‘solution’ people offer is to tell my friends in one country to move server as if it’s a piece of cake (if it was, there would be no need for a guesting system at all).

And some people tout other MMOs that shard their communities like that’s a benchmark of acceptability that I have to embrace. I don’t. And I don’t play those games.

And then people saying I have a sense of entitlement… hi? The transfers became free because ANet wanted to let people in my situation play with my friends. The got me as a customer because they offered this, among many other innovations, that other games don’t. How is a sense of entitlement to this feature wrong when they offered it to me?

Someone refute my logic. If you’re just going to bleat unfounded accusations that I’m some sort of farmer, stow it – that point’s been made. If you have evidence that I’m exploiting a feature to the disadvantage of other players, report me.

Yup, what Jason.8073 said. If someone’s spamming the map chat with gold offers, you’d report them if you’re a good citizen, but blocking them is an optional follow-up action – I can’t think of any reason not to block them, though, with two exceptions: where you either know the account owner as a friend or where you suspect it’s a stolen account and you don’t want to block them because they’ll still be blocked when their owner gets it back.

An automatic block-on-report, which is flagged in the DB to be withdrawn at an ANet representative’s discretion (i.e. when the account has been restored to its rightful owner) solves both exceptions.

Edit: third exception: players might not also block because it’s another handful of clicks that they could spend doing other stuff. This would also be solved by an auto-block.

When it comes to copyright law, there is no way of telling if a name is defensible unless it goes to trial and a court makes a ruling on it. Until then, it is a matter of risk assessment. That is why ANet requested discretion over naming as part of the terms that you agreed to be bound by.

What wrong with the good old Mk1 human eyeball….

You know its an amazing thing the old Mk1 if you use it to ‘’look at things’’ you spot things like BOTS… Speed hackers….. flying hacks…. CHEATS.

You go oh look a guy flying in the game…. teleporting from mob to mob. did we program that into the game.. Hmmm no i don’t think we did… = BAN HAMMER..

Oh look 20 naked rangers all running in a line in a circle path around Orr.. hmm hello rangers.. no reply = BAN HAMMER.

Im sorry but i dont believe a word of what Anet says right now, it’s a horrible thing to say i know and i will apologise if im wrong. BUT…
When i see MORE bots now running around than i did before, and they claim to be baning 10k every few weeks… sorry but i dont believe it.

Get some Mk1 human eyeballs on the ground in the game Anet.

Good old Mk1 human eyeball? Do some good old maths. If a human used the Mk1 eyeball to get a ban rate of one bot every 10 minutes (and that’s generous considering once botters realise what’s going on they’ll sacrifice bot efficiency for stealth), how long would it take for that person to ban 10,000 bots if they worked a 40 hour week?

Now some more advanced maths: A RMT company can get a new account for $60. In order to cut a profit, a batch of x accounts would have to earn a total of $ x * 60 before they all got banned. Say that ANet has 20 people using their Mk1 eyeballs, and there are 5000 botters in China each running x bot accounts. Using the gem store prices and gold/gem exchange rate as a reference, how much copper per second do bots have to earn for the following values of x to cut a profit: 5, 15, 30?

Next, the botters also run levelling services and account hacking. 20% of their bots are unpaid for, borrowed or stolen from players. A further 10% of the accounts are funded by revenue from their levelling service. Recalculate those copper earning rates.

Lastly, in an alternate scenario ANet develop a semi-automated process to detect and ban all the bot scripts. The process uses a neural network which can detect bots with 100% accuracy after 4 hours of training by a team of 15 supervisors. However the neural net needs to let bots run free until it has recorded a total of 100 hours of bot telemetry to analyze. Calculate the copper earning rates required by botters for this scenario.

Not all other games force you onto one server, some just split a map into separate instances like GW1 did. Games that split their populations into shards according to time zones are horrible if you live in a time zone that doesn’t have many players in it.

I play GW2 from Asia, in the late afternoons on weekdays and in the mornings on weekends. The American servers are barren on the former, and the Euro servers are barren on the latter. I’m now forced to choose between one or another.

I’d be satisfied if ANet at least admitted it, but the fact is that I’m a minority demographic and my patronage is expendable. Addressing the complaints about WvW glory hunters is more important as far as the bottom line goes. So whatever.

The change would leave you stuck at range (on a profession that you said had terrible mobility) while it was on cooldown, giving you few options other than running back, waiting (maybe those offhand skills I listed might help), switching to range (something someone dismissed as making no sense), or running away.

The strategy the OP describes, which involves using the melee weapon as a ‘great flow of melee to use between ranged attacks’ is the only use in which the change to #2 would make sense, it’s basically cloning the thief skill and it’s a skill that will always work better on the thief because of the initiative system.

Hohoho, perhaps you haven’t played other classes? Ranger severely lacks mobility and burst, and in pvp you can’t have too many gap closers. Also none of the things you listed are gap closers, they are ranged attacks or swiftness buffs (or change to another weapon-makes no sense!).

Check the code of conduct, laughing at people’s opinions/posts might be construed as disrespectful.

I’ve never had a problem with people being too far away on a Ranger, have you? I find ‘you can’t have too many gap closers’ to be hyperbole, and the ‘things I listed’ are offhand tools that give you mobility advantage, which the Ranger already has in spades in its utility options.

Greatsword #3 is enough gap closers for a class that has 3/5 of its weapon options at range.

You don’t leap backwards ‘just to leap forwards again’. You can leap backwards out of AoEs and PNC damage spike attacks. It conserves endurance by being an alternative to dodge, which links up beautifully with the other skills by providing you with a weapon that lets you cripple an enemy while buffing your pet, while making you very difficult to hit. And of course leaping backwards is something you don’t want to do all the time – but that’s easily solved by thinking. There are plenty of builds I can use when I don’t feel like thinking.

The sword’s fine, except Skill #1 is broken – which means #2 is working as a poor substitute for dodge, instead of a tactical alternative to it.

But the point is Skill #1 is broken, not Skill #2.

I want the evade-and-return to stay. It’s unique, and it’s useful to frustrate players that are trying to shake off your auto-attack cripples. The only thing that needs fixing is the ability to dodge or quickly disengage the auto-attack.

The sword doesn’t need a gap closer, 90% of the time people and mobs will come to you and, if they don’t, most Ranger builds are just as comfortable letting them stay at range. The dagger lets you cripple and evade as you approach, the axe lets you remain at distance and reflect projectiles if you left your bow in your other pants, and the horn gives you swiftness… there’s plenty of gap closing options.

Within just the Ranger profession, for example, the traps and healing spring are an utter shambles – some talk about pulses (without saying how long a pulse is) while others talk about per-second. There’s no consistency between any two.

Healing Spring puts a little ‘6’ next to the regen icon, none of the others do that. Why? Presumably it means 6 pulses? It’s a failure of documentation that the only way to work it out is to test it or ask the community.

Then Viper’s Nest doesn’t have a duration – is it instant? If it is, why does the damage field have ‘(x3)’ on it? 3 pulses, or a 3 hits at the same time? It also says [quoting from the wiki] ‘Poison: 3s (252 damage) (per pulse)’. So is that a single poison debuff of 3 seconds that pulses 3 times, or is it that the trap pulses ? many times and each pulse stacks a 3-second poison condition worth 252 damage?

OP shouldn’t have had to ask this question in the first place.

The reason the communities are sharded when the economy is not is precisely because the drawbacks and benefits of large vs small populations for each are completely different and not at all analogous; using community as an analogy to economy in that manner makes no sense.
