I too ran a bleed build pre-patch, and the changes nerfed it all to Hades; stacking 25 bleeds felt like I was tickling the backs of some knees. Then I looked at some of the skills and traits I’d ignored before the patch, and found that things I’d never even considered (like venoms) were now far more attractive. Since it was still condition damage, I didn’t have to change gear except to run a new weapon set (p/d/sb) and swap out runes.
Now, I actually deal more damage and survive better than prepatch. My mobility and stealth are a more natural pattern, my sources of damage (bleed, poison, torment and confusion) hit harder and are more spread out (so harder to clear), and I pop in and out of stealth while being highly mobile. I’ve even got a little more utility going.
To top it off, I’m even stronger in group setting instead of weaker like I once was.
tl;dr: We’re not as strong as some of the other classes, but we’re not out of the game. Look at the new skills and traits for things you’ve never tried before.
Every meta was once someone’s experiment.
My money is that Ricochet isn’t gone; it’s going to be part of the Elite Specialization (Rifle as added weapon) called Gunslinger. Yes, it sucks for pistol in the meantime, but fingers crossed it means great things are coming.
I’m could say that it won’t be rifle. http://i.imgur.com/xA8qvVk.png that picture was datamined and it does not look like rifle. Also that staff looks like [&AgFgEQEAAA==]
Not sure how I feel about that… I mean, if it’s a new ranged option, it could be interesting to play a ‘Shadow Mage’.
Guess we’ll see!
WVW/PVE: Use Rune of the trapper it makes this build too easy to use.
Thanks for this tip.
I think I’m going to switch over to these, and use Withdraw on my Venomshare build; insta removes the control conditions +1 damaging condition, and if the build works as I think it should it drops a trap, which grants me superspeed and stealth (removing a damaging condition with yet another if I stay in stealth, PLUS I can pop of stealth to my pistol #1).
A very very handy addition to my build!

So, before the patch I was a bleed-condi solo thief (camp flipping in WvW or farming Orr). I happened to rejoin the game on patch day, and after a week of tooling with a new mesmer, picked my thief back up for the specific purpose of getting him ready to do group dungeons with some friends. With all the changes, venomshare had caught my eye. Since I was already mostly geared, I just tweaked my runes and sigils ankitten ow running something very similar to the above build. Here are my day 1 impressions:
When soloing, Guild is your mostest favoritist Elite EVAR. Stacking 20+ poison, 10+ Torment, 10+ Bleeds, all before the mob even turns to face you is amazing. Note that you can/will get more up, that’s just how the fight starts off. If you happen across a few other players doing an event things just melt.
For pure soloing, that is traversing the zones and doing hearts/events, I found my damage to be pretty standard, with on caveat: I have to do more work to do my damage. I used to just dodge/trops, spam DD#3, and dodge trops some more, then walk over to collect the loot. Now I need to pop a venom first. I might be able to do things better in a power build soloing, but I did not at any point feel that I needed to replace anything on a venomshare build to solo any areas.
Just my (again, day one) two cents.
Oh, one last thing:
I did a little testing for anyone curious or unaware: When you use venomshare, ALL conditions derived from your venoms are based on your condition damage/duration, and count as coming from you (for the purpose of tagging mobs, and seemingly threat as well). The procs also appear on your screen; something to consider.
My build is very early on, so take this with a grain of salt, but conditions aren’t really a weakness of venom builds from what I’ve seen thus far. I mean, 2/3 of the condition damage armor comes with Vit built-in, HIS cures it’s own fair share, and if you’re P/D, Shadow’s Embrace can give you on demand minor cleansing. Toss on a Signet of Agility for really heavy condition fight, and with some nearby party members (or thieves’ guild) you should be clearing away plenty!
Also, Venomshare is at its best when you run only 2 venoms on the bar; Skale/Spider or Devourer/Drake are my my current pairings. One for higher damage, the other for better control. Ofc some fights (enemies immune to one condition or another) require a slightly different style, so ymmv, but you get the drift.
That said, I wouldn’t necessarily ‘mind’ if we got some condi clear built into venom casting (Maybe make Leeching Venoms into Cleansing Venoms?) I just don’t think it makes or breaks the build!
IGN: Bas Flaith
Playstyle: WvW roaming/camp flipping, but I’m wanting to get into PvE dungeons with it.
Server: Dragonbrand
Experience with thief: I started with thief almost two years ago, but took a long break from the game. My original build was a bleed-spam/evade build, which was fantastic for WvW/PvE roaming, as well as flipping camps. A few months ago I returned and began work on a Knight’s power/camp flipping build using Thieve’s Guild shenanigans to make an easy time of it; but school kept me away for several months. Now I’m back, and relearning the ropes!
In, thank you!

Short backstory, I’ve been out of the game for awhile, but with the massive re-balance the other day, a friend convinced me to give it one more go. Since I have trouble getting reacquainted with mechanics on already existing toons, I rolled a brand spanking new mesmer (Only class I haven’t played since I didn’t enjoy them all too much in the original GW).
In most MMOs I’ve started enjoying more of a support role, so after I played with Mesmer a bit (lvl 50 since patch) I’m starting to look to up my game a little bit. THIS is what I came up with.
The idea is to use the ethereal fields and staff to create swarms of boons on myself (and allies). Then drop a phantasm for boonshare galore. Weave in some group distortion, perma-regen, and top it off with constant AoE heals.
However, I played enough in the past to know that you need to bring more than just some pretty icons to a fight to be useful, so I also wanted to make use of the myriad of conditions available to the staff; both as cover conditions and something legitimately damaging on their own.
To top it all off, I’m packing enough reflection and condition clearing fields to help control the flow of the fight; in theory making me an asset to any group I jump in on.
That said, I’m pseudo new, and would love some feedback/thoughts/suggestions!
I’m getting this as well. When I type the new password, the page refreshes but nothing happens. Thanks to this I’m locked out of the game as well, so quick turn-around would be much appreciated.
Absolutely. The only reason to make it difficult to obtain is that you’re lazy and can’t design content that people want to play without carrots.
If the content is good, people will play it, and Guild Wars used to be proof of that.
I disagree with lazy. There is plenty of content in GW2 that does not reward carrot-seekers. The issue is that it is spread throughout the game, and across multiple servers. People are doing this content, you just don’t always see large concentrations like you do for one-time events or dungeons, since everyone looking for a dungeon party goes to the same place.
In the old dungeons, you’re right. My comment was purely in the direction of the ‘ascended tier’, which aims more at lazy. Even worse is i would have played the heck out of fractals had they not shoehorned in a crap stat bump.

So I boycotted the event, and am glad to see this thread still going strong today! ANet kept saying ‘wait and see’… We waited, we saw, and we’re still angry!
When uninstalling the game, the client asks if I’d like to take a survey to help improve it. I accepted, and was sent to:
http://exitsurvey.guildwars2.com/
This link is not valid :-(
This is facts we have as far ANet has said nothing about runes on armor as they arent the same as jewels like in rings/amulets etc as they can only be put in armor.
Actually, Linsey was VERY clear about Runes/Upgrades:
’The stats and functionality normally added to gear through upgrade components are actually built into Ascended items. ’
Stats AND functionality.
Uder, sadly my last post was removed else your first reply would have been of absolute support.
You phrased, quite well, what MANY of us are trying to say.
As a level 80 player in full transmuted exotic gear, currently working on a second full set and a change of trinkets, I have to ask… wtf is Plinxx?
I’ve never had issue getting materials by running around. Completing some areas gives you 40 Orr for pete’s sake! Greens into the forge for extra rares… Heck, I rarely step into orr nowadays. Want some quick gear, go help CoF. The blues/greens/and yellows from there are leveled to you anyway, so it’s just as good and way more fun (though I advise doing he dungeon after.)
You used to have choice on how to get the gear.
Guys instead of saying “/signed” just upvote the post. You’re “signed” is just going to get deleted and it takes up space people have to scroll through.
I tried, but the original seems to be lost due to the amount of ‘damage control’ being applied to the thread (according to the link it was originally on page 141!)
“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”
-Mike Obrien, President of ArenanetFun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”
– Colin JohansonLies, lies and more lies.
“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.
Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director
Lying about lies, that must be a sad joke.

for it, and the community wanted it.
From the ridiculous amounts of feedback, I’d say that no, no they did not want it.
On topic:
Arena.Net, Thank you for the event. Thank you for the new zone. Thank you for the almost* revolutionary dungeon. But I must politely decline the Ascended gear. No, really, I’m good. What. I can’t enjoy the dungeon w/o it?
Queue the rage.
Ascended gear has upgrades already built in, so no, you won’t lose anything. There is no trade-off. It is better in any aspect.
@OP: If I were you, I’d sell those runes/sigils as they will eventually become useless.
Statwise upgrades are implemeted in the ring, that much is confirmed.
However, when it comes to weapons and armor, there may be statwise bonuses to Ascended gear, but there is a trade-off.
The specific rune and sigil bonusesMy shouts heal condition due to my runes of the soldier. Getting Ascended armor would mean a possible increase in stats, but the loss of the utility provided by the armor.
Like I said. This is still mostly speculation, so I think this debate is better held in the future when there is more concrete information.
From Linsey:
‘The stats and functionality normally added to gear through upgrade components are actually built into Ascended items. ’ So, according to her, you’ll still be getting the shout healing in Ascended, and it’ll heal for more.
Currently, Ascendant gear cannot be upgraded aside from Infusion.
They do, however, have the same stats as an Exotic with Runes(upgrades) plus a little something extra (~8% on each stat)
‘GLFM, Ascendant not required!’
‘Man, you play warrior well!’
‘I finally have max gear!’ (Casuals only)
Ekim:
Infusion is only available on ascendant gear, thus you DO need the new stats to do the dungeon.
That’s directly from Linsey.
Dear Chris Whiteside,
Firstly, thank you for the attempt at clarification on the current events surrounding our game. I say attempt because, contrary to your desires, the message you’ve left us with actually created more questions. Not the least of which is that if Legendary Gear posses the same statistics as the current max-level gear then what need was there to add a new tier of gear between those two and increase the power of the Legendary weapons to this previously non-existent tier?
For those wondering why ANet hasn’t responded to this thread:
When a designer makes a decision that is not liked, a knee jerk reaction is to be expected. Normally, if you leave the player base alone for a day or two, these reactions will simply cease. Thus, they can safely ignore the pages and pages of outcry thus far. Want to make them listen? Keep talking, and refuse to be soothed by a technique for infants.
I totally agree. The new zone and dungeon are amazing ideas. Making an event where i cab invite a friend, side kick, and see an area I’ve never been to together? Absolutely genius. I was actually canceling plans to camp my computer this weekend to partake!
Sad how one mistake can sour the entire entire event for some of us. Retracting my invites made me feel very sad…
‘Remember, remember, the 12th of November.
The ArenaNet Grind and Plot.
I can think of no reason why Guild Wars 2 should ever have been bought.’
On topic:
The Charr and Humans find a new ally who aides both causes because they’re cuddly and voiced by Jack Black. But they no longer fight with weapons, they’ve ascended to capturing small animals and battling them against one another to settle differences.
The Charr then event guns to shoot themselves after realizing what they’ve become.
There is no other way to make a MMO other than using the treadmill. Theres no progression without a treadmill… How do you guys not see that, how can sitting in the same gear since you turned level 80, and downing bosses that don’t vary in toughness be fun!?
Not really. Over 7 years, Guild Wars 1 had zero power creep.
And thats why the game was only popular for a few months, they are trying to stop that from happening to this game.
GW1 was insanely popular for several YEARS. Heck, people STILL log in to play it to this day which means the servers are still running… so there’s money coming from somewhere.
Deimos, they may not have said they’ll keep increasing, but they did say they’d never increase at all. So even if they promised ‘this is the last tier’ I doubt many will buy it now.
No, I hate the new Ascended Items.
Mainly because the lack of a dungeon finder/group finder isn’t breaking the game.
It’s absence is an inconvenience, agreed, but what people are currently doing works.
Here, we disagree.
W/o dungeon finder people who want to do a dungeon are forced to manually hunt for groups via shouts (setting LFG tag outside Arah or Honor isn’t very effective thanks to the number of other events worth grouping for going on) attributes a great deal to the ‘where is everyone’ that keeps getting asked. If getting into a dungeon required nothing more than a few clicks and a moment then more people would play them, making the current active player base SEEM more active, which in turn makes more people play.
Dungeon finder, if not already, must be put on the critical path for the good of the game.
So hacking is the issue?
I’m an old GW1 player, but it’s been literally years since I logged into my account. Literally no clue what my password was, so now it’s impossible to link it to my GW2 account (thank goodness I use a new email so I could create a new account!)
