Hey guys— doing a bit of streaming today. Feel free to stop by and ask questions I’ll answer on stream!
Mesmers: the good, the bad, i still want to bang my face on fighting them
in Mesmer
Posted by: Nero.8623
First off: this game isn’t balanced around 1-1s.
If you’re going around trying to get into 1-1s as a warrior you’re doing it wrong. Wait until there’s multiple people fighting run in and 100 derps everyone around.
Learn how to engage before you complain. Hardly Anets fault that you don’t know how to play your class.
If you like a class— you figure out how to make it work. Not vice versa.
It’s a vicious cycle. Started with one team not wanting to wait over 5 minutes to play— they instead que for free tournies. More teams that join free the longer the wait. The longer the wait the more teams that join free.
Just curious— what do you guys find most helpful? I’m definitely willing to change it up and provide a bit of commentary/ analysis— or I can go with the tried and true montage.
Thoughts?
There’s outplaying them— and then there’s guards that are specced to have other things to grant them invuln on top of the block bug and it just gets insane with the amount of damage they can completely negate.
One person on a point that is completely specced tank SHOULD be able to hold on for longer than a person that is specced for DPS sure. But they SHOULDN’T be able to tank it indefinitely.
This is obviously all kicking a dead horse at this point though as devs have stated they are trying to fix it… it’s just crazy irritating in the mean time.
Really appreciate the feedback guys =)
If anyone is looking for more footage of me I stream at www.twitch.tv/nero1209 — I have quite a few videos saved on there so you can actually see me playing through entire tPvP matches.
Definitely like browsing this thread from time to time to see how other people are approaching the mesmer class as I feel it has a lot of variety. Would love it stickied.
PS— I’ve been doing some interesting things with utility/weapon swapping lately. Check out my latest stream video and see for yourself
.
Hey guys— team is isn’t on at the moment so I’m doing some tournies with randies.
Join the chat— and I’m definitely down to play some with whoever!

Yeah it does go in the direction away from your target. Makes running away potentially easier. Other than that its kind of a pain to not have the reliability factor it once had.
Mantras will be sub-par until there is some type of sustainability in terms of fighting. You get into a fight that lasts longer than 30 seconds and you have to run away to cast all your spells for 20 seconds.
Not to mention empowered mantras is a really silly idea for a trait. Lets see, lets encourage people to use mantras so that when they have more of them charged they do more damage— except that in order to keep that higher damage they can’t use their mantras they have charged…. so essentially empowered mantras encourages people to use mantras as their utilities and then to not actually use the mantras.
Thus, the longer the fight goes on the weaker you get. This applies to using mantras as a whole. Not a good concept.
A few things:
First off GS is great in a shatter build. Second- staff is not.
For certain situations sword/pistol and staff can be a great set up— but personally now that I have worked away from staff (was not easy at all) I use sword/pistol GS 100% of the time.
With a shatter build you are left without a lot of defense. Much of your survivability comes from avoiding damage rather than absorbing it. In parallel to this, in order to deal damage consistently excluding a few situations your target has to be standing still. Illusionary leap/blurred frenzy is a devastating combination for precisely that reason. I could never imagine sacrificing that for anything else in my shatter build.
Your GS can offer really good setup for your next shatter/additional CC, and sustained DPS in between your bursts with your sword/pistol combination.
The amount of CC you have between sword/pistol and GS is absolutely amazing.
When it comes to staff— you are essentially playing defensive when you have your staff out. Putting pressure is essentially non-existent. Yes the #2 is amazing, and chaos armor combos and chaos storm are all awesome for keeping you alive— but this goes back to the absorbing damage rather than avoiding it. Without a lot of toughness switching to staff will just result in your opponent having the ability to do whatever they want without you applying any real pressure. Sure waiting for your shatters to be up is great— but wouldn’t you rather keep the pressure up between shatters rather then just becoming a lame duck?
For the most part you get the general trait set up— but a few notes:
Domination:
If you’re running a shatter build one of its main strengths is that you strip boons while you’re doing damage. Sacrificing shattered concentration for greatsword training is not a good idea.
Dueling:
Phantams having fury is a style choice which is fine. Personally since I do run sword/pistol I use the 20% shorter CD since blurred frenzy every 8 seconds instead of every 10 can save your life vs really bursty specs.
Illusions:
Instead of an extra bounce I have cry of frustration grants retaliation. You can get a really hefty stack of retal up in addition to slapping a decent sized stack of confusion on your opponent. He is taking damage from using abilities and is also taking damage from dealing damage to you. A well timed cry of frustration can play a pivotal role in taking someone down.
Warming up with the group with some free ones— starting some real ones soon though!
Enjoy!

I have a lot of experience playing tournies.
www.youtube.com/spam1209 for slightly outdated videos but they’re not too bad.
I want a solid team to do paid tPvP with. Not going to waste time playing with any weak links. If you have a solid group and need another let me know.
And yet again— random claim with no evidence.
Thanks, bye
In response to how I spend my traits I discuss it thoroughly in this thread:

Faceroll? Please explain what part of my build is faceroll other than pointing out the two phantams that I happen to get from my weapon set choice.
In the words of a wise man, " You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Highlights how weak shatter is. Good point
I read about a class that I want to play. I saw a huge mechanic of this class is shatter. I rolled this class. I hate shatter! Devs plz fix!
Glad you guys are all enjoying the build!
And yeah Zal— I kind of switched off between runes of divinity and of the scholar a bit— I just like my openers to have just a little extra pop.
I’ve been playing mes for a bit now and I’ve run a variety of builds— and of all of them this is definitely my favorite. It requires you play at a much faster pace than pretty much all of the other builds I’ve personally tried on mes at least.
I’ve been spending a bit of my time recently when I can play learning other classes— best way to be a really good DPSer is to understand the mechanics of the class you’re trying to kill.
Had one guildie already get stuck again— doesn’t seem as frequent though?
I’ve actually tried out scepter/sword(as opposed to GS) as secondary to sword/pistol. It really depends.
I just really like the AoE berzerker gives, and additionally being able to fight at the 1200 range as opposed to 900 can be super usefully for supporting in some situations. Also- honestly I really don’t have any point where I’m just casting auto attack 3x with a scepter

It is one boon per illusion. It’s pretty amazing. I’ve tried a few alternative builds to up my DPS— but honestly being able to strip boons is consistently the best thing I can do for my DPS and applying pressure
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ll be posting more videos on my channel soon so be sure to subscribe =)

You have to copy paste this ^^
Weapons:
Sword/Pistol- Lots of burst here with blurred frenzy, really like the duelist for ranged damage to start off a fight. Great potential to combo with illusionary leap+swap/blurred frenzy. Can also stun lock when combining leap, magic bullet, and illusionary wave from GS.
GS- Sustainable DPS between bursts with your shatters, berzerker is great because it spawns on your target too instead of having to run over to it. Comboability with knock back. Nice for stacking a little might with mirror blade before going into another burst with sword/pistol.
Heal Skill:
No brainer.
Utility Skills:
Utility #1- Mirror images, huge for bursting someone down, once you do your initial shatter popping this while you have your target rooted and immediately poping another shatter can absolutely be devastating.
Utility #2- Decoy, extremely useful for delaying DPS/conditions being stacked on you as well as confusing your opponent. You can’t underestimate being able to take the target off of your head in terms of survivability. This is a great skill to pop after a burst cycle.
Utility #3- Depending on the situation I switch this out with blink, null field, and portal. It really depends on your teams makeup and the composition you’re going against. On some maps portal is amazing, on some blink is amazing etc. If you’re on point defense you NEED null field otherwise any good condition spec will take you out with ease.
Elite:
Time warp- Amazing for turning the tide of fights. You can’t underestimate being able to nearly instantly stand someone up that just went down, or getting a steak in an enemy team’s player that just dropped to even up, or give you the advantage in a fight.
Traits:
Domination
I- Mind wrack is one of your main source of bursts, you want to pump it up as much as you can.
VII- Outstanding ability for taking out bunkers or even anyone receiving support from teammates. Having your shatter strip boons can really turn the tide of so many fights.
Dueling
IV- Blurred frenzy is an amazing skill. Being able to have 2 seconds of invlun every 8 seconds as opposed to every 10 seconds is huge for fighting really bursty classes.
X- Pretty obvious trait to have in most builds honestly.
Illusions
II- If used properly you can cause a ton of damage with this retal/confusion combo. A lot of people make the mistake of popping a stun or a daze right after using cry of frustration, and that’s a big no-no.
VI- Great for either additional DPS in a team fight, or for getting another daze/distortion up to prevent incoming damage
XI- Obvious trait is obvious.
Runes:
Runes of the Scholar
+8% crit dmg and 165 power, also absolutely amazing for adding a bit more damage to the top on your opening bursts, and your bursts after your heals.
Sigils:
Sword/Pistol-
Superior Fire- I really like the AoE that I get from this, every bit helps.
Superior Energy- Clones are crucial for this build. Switching weapons gives you 50% of your endurance back. You use endurance to dodge. You can create clones via dodging. This is a no brainer
GS-
Superior Energy " "
Not home at the moment— but once I get home I’ll make a post about my whole set up =)
Thanks for the feedback man, it’s appreciated! Hope to see you around =)

Shatter/retal build with Scepter/pistol Sword/sword
My current build I’ve been playing with for a few days now.
I’ve had a staff on my mes pretty much since I started pvping— and I was just trying to make a build that got away from that a bit and this is what I ended up with. It can get a little technical in terms of when you should use your blocks but it’s actually very defensible and has amazing DPS.
And obviously— I pull a focus out of my inventory when combat breaks to throw out the speed buff and instantly switch back to pistol.

Working with a new build— streaming!
Enjoy
Thanks man— been using the focus a lot lately— between temporal curtain, into the void, and the warden I’m having a hard time putting it down.
I’ll be in chat feel free to ask any questions!
Let me know what you think-
Shameless self promotion.
Starting to stream as well—I’ll be in chat feel free to ask questions!
Is it confirmed that time warp even effects phantasms? I briefly tested this and it didn’t seem to speed them up— like it makes their attacks go off faster but it doesn’t actually reduce the delay in the time that they attack.
Aka— it seems more worthwhile to drop on your party since they have more than one attack.
(edited by Nero.8623)
Blink, Temporal Curtain, and Phase retreat. Saying movement for mesmer is terrible is incredibly incorrect. Sure getting from point A to B may be a little less fluid but as far as being able to move around in combat we have it made.
The concept that you could ever make an NPC look like a person is a somewhat flawed design sure. An even more flawed concept is you picking mesmer because you believed that was actually something that was viable.
Also— if you have a ton of trouble living as a mesmer because of getting the target over your head— decoy, and desperate decoy are amazing abilities.
Doing some tourny play with some randies.

The fight with the warrior lasted a minute. There are 7 more minutes of footage.
All of the footage was of tournament play— and quite obviously I’ve won my fair share as I had full Armageddon by level 8. Thanks for making statements with no backup, not watching my video and then continuing to portray your ignorance. Have a good one
Ok trigr— and at what point exactly did I need to use a dodge vs the warrior? I conserve dodge for when I actually need it. I never went below 70% health in the fight vs the warrior.
Clearly you’re not actually looking at how the spec works. The purpose isn’t to spike damage into people. I made this build for holding points in tourny play and it does this extremely well because of all of the condition control I have between putting boons on myself and stripping enemies of buffs and putting conditions on them.
I have a ton of ways to avoid damage rather than dodging. If I have my combo activated and get my chaos armor there is literally no reason for me to dodge if I am in no danger as I can further get more conditions spread around.
Thanks for your input— but next time you try open your eyes a little bit and try not to be so ignorant.
Here’s the build: (you have to copy paste it for some reason— the link doesn’t work.
