Now that we know most of what will be seen in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, it would be cool to start up a little wishlist of all the things we’d like to see in the next expansion. I know one isn’t confirmed but they said there would be future specializations for characters at some point (I presume in another expansion or update), and GW1 had multiple expansions during the span of it’s life.
Obviously, there’s been some outrage about cut features, or promises that weren’t kept, and a few seemingly obvious additions that would have made sense but were overlooked, but this isn’t about HoT-Hate, after all, HoT is a launching pad for potential expansions down the line.
What would the community like to see in the future? more classes being added? more choices of specializations? races like Tengu and Kodan being available? More weapon types?

You literally reworded my thread’s title and made your own.
It’s more than likely just a case that the game can show and display a nice high res textured character in the character select screen as that’s all it is trying to render. All that said, looking at the images I think its down to lighting and area. The Character select screen will have a well lit scene where as the in game could have a number of factors changing the way your character looks. Between the two I see very little differences in texture quality themselves.
…in my opinion anyway!
There’s quite a difference in the hair mesh as well. Also, AA in-game isn’t at all how it is in character select. But like you said, it could be because there’s nothing else to render. But I argue that not just the characters, but the entire WORLD should reflect the fidelity of the character select models.
Is your character model quality set to Ultra?
Yes. The screens I provided are the final results of having max settings enabled. The settings you have enabled effect your character model both in-game as well as character select. That means that the character select page is using the game’s engine to render your characters, obviously. Why, then, do the in-game models not look as good?
Let’s just finish our current expansion first
I never understood this mentality from a consumer’s standpoint. We’re not the devs, we’re not wasting anyone’s time thinking about the future. Why end a potentially impactful discussion just because it’s looking ahead? We have nothing to finish. We’re the consumers, we have ideas and discussions about what we’re passionate for.
And with that out of the way…
I like the naval combat, personally I think airship combat could be even better. on the subject of boats the only real considerations is how to implement it in the game. Since the maps are all instanced I don’t think an archeage style boat mechanics would work (not that I’ve played Archeage but I did watch a youtube video so I guess that the same :P ).
So likely this would be integrated into WvW, PvP or GvG. All of which would be a instanced space where two or more teams go at it. This takes away a bit from the ‘cool factor’ since in this case it’s little more than a fancy WvW or PvP map. The ideal implementation would be having a true open world where it would be possible to accidentally run into other players, choose to engage or retreat etc.
I fully agree with everything you said. I even considered including my thoughts on airships as well, but figured I’d leave my OP to Naval combat alone. I agree that this would be best implemented in either instanced, large worlds such as a separate borderland in WvW or a spvp game mode. As for open world implementation for the PvE aspect of it, A new map entirely would probably be best over simply adding it to ocean space in current Tyria. That being said, there are a lot of coasts in wich empty waters cannot be accessed due to technically being out-of-map borders. Should these borders be removed, however, we have a whole new playing field. Perhaps an entry portal which can only be passed through with a ship, requiring players to own ships to gain access to the location.

+1 for this reaction, I think it is healthy for us but also for the devs to keep further future ideas up at any situation.
Next to that I’dd love to see this, but they would have to give underwater combat itself a big overhaul first imo.
Agreed, underwater combat in it’s current state is sort of dead.

If I’ve observed anything from Anet, it’s that they’re not afraid to rethink their original design choices. An example of this is how it’s been recently said by one of the PvP devs that he was strongly interested in the idea of open world pvp, even though this was intentionally avoided when the game first launched. In a recent interview (which I’m having a hard time sourcing), Anet mentioned “We never say never” so as to insinuate that anything’s possible, regardless of past ideologies and stances. So, that being said, let’s get to it.
Naval Combat
Water gameplay isn’t new to Gw2. A large portion of Gw2’s maps include vast expanses of ocean. Even enemy ships arise from the depths during certain World events. Wouldn’t it be neat-o to command your own ship, and make the enemy ships interactable so we can actually battle it? Even new maps can be created for such a feature, just as new maps have been created for the Glider mastery. Speaking of masteries, why not make Ship Mastery a thing? If not for every single player, perhaps for those with a Commander pin, or Guild leaders? Those without such prerequisites can occupy the ship as co-captains, man the cannons, repairs, etc. Those without rights to own a ship can perhaps instead have rowboats to traverse the waters themselves at faster speeds, but at the cost of the defense and hp a guild ship would provide. New ocean-centric world bosses can be created for this feature as well. This could also prove to be a great pvp mode in WvW and spvp alike. Separate maps with large ocean waters for guild ships to go head to head.
What are your wishes for the future of Gw2?
dyeable weapons coming in the next expansion after HOT along with legendary armors
Did you just make that up?
because of the light beeing different form place to place.
But ‘ts not just the light, as I’ve clearly made sure to mention.
My graphics settings are at their highest.

Does anyone at least know the answer as to why this is the case? I don’t understand why the same level of quality shown in the character select isn’t present in the actual game, where it actually matters.
So, I’ve always known this, but only now have I thought to bring up the subject on the forums. Why are the character models down-res’d in-game? Hair mesh is jagged and seems to have a smaller poly count, textures are flatter, shadows/lighting is almost non-existent… If the actual game world had the fidelity of the character models on the character select screen, it’d be magnificent.
So there I was, unequipping Balthazar’s Regalia outfit, when I noticed a flash of an unfamiliar look.
I continue equipping and unequipping the outfit in hopes of seeing this dark flash once more, screen capping at every glimpse, and then, I caught it.
Dunno what causes this, but it’s beautiful. My armor, hair, and skin transformed beautifully. If I could look exactly like this, I would.
I’ve provided an ss of what my character actually looks like.
It may have something to do with body type/physique.
Pauldrons vary wildly depending on the body type chosen….. there might be a similar effect with weapons as well.
It makes sense that the pauldrons would be larger to better fit broader torso’s, but i dont see how that could (or should) effect the length of a greatsword
Just updated the OP, now you can all bare witness.
I believe its been said that they will be adding a dueling system into the game, its just not a high priority right now. My guess is we’ll see dueling implemented post HoT
I only have the one character. She will have to do.
was hoping someone would post an asuran femme, glad you did.
10/10
…so far so meh
It could. how were you guys comparing your sizes? (Lol)
If you were stacking and looking from the back, there had been an issue where weapons were placed higher on the back when wearing an outfit. I don’t know that the length itself was different tho, just that it was placed at a different spot.
Stood stacked on the same spot, swords drawn. Hilts and handles were exactly in the same position, same size. The only size difference was in the actual blades themselves, where his blade literally reached out farther than my twilight by a quarter of the blades original length. (lol)
Also.. Are you wearing an outfit? There had been some issues with certain outfits and certain races/gender where the outfit changed where the weapon was being equppied on the back. I haven’t checked on that in a long time tho so maybe they fixed it. I know male slyvari for certain had issues and maybe the male humans.
Aha! A clue!
I wasnt wearing an outfit, but my friend was! he was wearing the new Exemplar outfit.
Could it be that the outfit is having effects on his sword?
I feel OP has answered their own question.. Asking if eternity is longer than twilight yet states it is when comparing with their friend but providing no pics for the people on the forums to draw to a conclusion.
Le sigh.
yes, yes I know how bad it looks. I kind of regret having made this thread because of my lack of evidence. I assure you the difference was night and day. (literally, twlight on sunrise lel) In any case, it’s no longer occurring, I can’t reproduce it.
Can’t you take a picture of it? Also you can go to a dungeon to change day/night effects. I think HOTW and CM are day time.
I’d love to, however my friend is offline. I need a human male, max height, with an eternity. Come one, come all! Witness the size matters extravaganza!
i own both. i equipped both. same size, perspective.
I just tested it with someone else, yeah they’re the same size.
Here’s the thing though, when i made this thread, they were actually different in length. It was daytime, and so his eternity had the look of a sunrise. The contrast between his daylight eternity and my twilight were unmistakable. In the comparison, standing on top of eachother, his blade reached out longer than mine did. Wasn’t a matter of perspective, as my twilight actually was a quarter shorter than his eternity. Ofc my word means nothing without proof, wish i took an ss. Regardless, it’s not longer occuring.
P.S.
I’m not crazy.
No they’re is no size difference. most likely your perspective towards another account you are seeing.
We stood in the exact same spot, had our blades drawn, and we both saw the size difference.
- I’m not entirely thrilled by the choices ANet made for many of the background programming in the game. I’d love to see some of them addressed. That said, I’m pretty sure my list and yours have nothing in common. That’s the thing. ANet tries to please as many people as possible while moving the game in the direction they want it to go. In a addition to different groups of players with different visions of where they’d like the game to progress, ANet also has goals. It’s inevitable that some things you’d like are not in the cards, and that others are lower priorities than you’d like to see. I say that as someone whose personal preferences have been largely ignored.
- Nice dodge on the trading point.
I wrote a comment about how I retract any argument I’ve made for the trading system being a good idea, sorry if you felt like I was avoiding the topic.
How about a thread where I suggest dynamics events and PvE content in sPvP? Why should I be locked out of PvP from lack of PvE content in there. Why can’t they put nodes in the map for me to harvest while remaining green to all others. Maybe they could add repeatable hearts on the PvP maps. It’s only fair, if PvP gets put into PvE.
If they did that, there would be a lot of PvE people going on to those maps.
PvP(WvW and SPvP) has PvE content in them. It has from the start.
It’s been an abomination too. How well did the living story garbage work in the first WvW tourney?
Trial and error. The basis of success.
So how will your dueling effect dynamic events? I want dueling but there are problems beyond your “I want it so it’s kewl” arguments.
Oh of course, the dynamic events.
..What?
I don’t see how it would effect dynamic events. What relevance does it have on dynamic events?
There is the flaw in your thinking only about what you want. Scaling up dynamic events when you will not be participating in said event. That is what I was talking about. As I said I want open world dueling but there are plenty of reasons why it is not in this game.
According to the developers it’s because it’s not a priority right now. A developer over in the PvP forums previously said that they want to add open world dueling to the game, it’s just not the highest on their list of priorities. If I remember correctly, Colin said something like “we absolutely want to add dueling to the game in the future.” in an interview as well.
Wow, I had no idea. That’s fantastic news.

You know, the dynamic events in sPvP isnt a bad idea. I rather like it, actually. Even in WvW.

I’m sorry, really, I don’t understand what you mean by “Scaling up dynamic events when you will not be participating in said event”. The open world dueling does not effect anything or anyone other than the 2 who have agreed to engage in combat. The sun will still shine another day, dynamic events will be as dynamic as ever, and no one gets hurt.

It should also be noted that digital extremes implementing pvp into their game because of community cries also ruined it to a degree. It took about a year for the dueling to get implemented not a few months. And it led to a large increase of toxic players.
The community does not always know what is right for a game. Yes some may want to see mounts and open world dueling but their are reasons why they were not implemented at the beginning of the game.
I just hope to god Anet doesnt make the same mistake as DE and start doing everything the community cries for.
It wasn’t marketed as a PvP game when Conclaves released. Thus there was no influx of a “toxic” community, thus the “toxic” players were players who were part of the community prior to the implementation of Conclaves.
I’ve been with that game for multiple years since the begginning of its closed beta when there was only 1 map tileset. I’ve watched the community and was an active forum user. There was never a toxic community UNTIL pvp was first implemented. Yes it did draw in a lot of toxic players, warframe used to be one of the friendliest games available and is now making its way to one of the worst.
Currently the community is split in half between pvp supporters and pvp haters. There is a large amount of toxic players in both sides and they have been dragging the game down for a while now.
I believe that influx of toxic players came with the release of Warframe on Steam. Conclaves died before they even released. The community didnt go to s**t with its release. It was the coming of Steam users that changed the community.
Toxicity is a pretty popular word among you all. Why is there such a negative outlook on pvp, and why is that bias any more valid than one that would suggest that pvp promotes a healthy community? Open world dueling does not mean I can stab you in the back while you’re zerging in Queensdale. What it does mean, however, is that I have the ability to challenge you, and should you accept the challenge, we can spar. No ranks, no downsides. Hell, we can even make it so that we’d have a duel hp gauge, an hp overlay atop our PvE HP pool, so as to not actually cause any real damage that might make you susceptible to fatal damage from a PvE enemy post-duel.
It should also be noted that digital extremes implementing pvp into their game because of community cries also ruined it to a degree. It took about a year for the dueling to get implemented not a few months. And it led to a large increase of toxic players.

You’re using it as an excuse for mounts O.o there are bigger priorities that could be achieved in less time/investment.
The point being that upgrading to dx 11 would solve performance issues.
One could probably find a sizable group of people under the legal drinking age, that would support having the drinking age limit lowered. I’m not sure that would be a positive.
One could probably (surely) find a sizable group of people that would support raising taxes to enable more community services. I’m positive others would find this a negative.
One could probably find a group of people that would support adding a subscription to this game. Again, I am pretty sure others would clamor that that action would not be positive.
Thus, a group of people/players asking for something does not guarantee it will be seen as, or in fact be, a ‘positive’.
An addition that does not effect everyone else. You blew my quote way out of context. A subscription fee will cause many players to quit. Seeing a player mount run by wont. Raising taxes will upset many, a mutually agreed upon duel won’t upset anyone. Lowering the drinking age? well, that just doesn’t fit anywhere.
I will say that the trading system would affect thge economy negatively, and I had not thought of that. So I retract my argument from that feature.
Wow, the forum veterans were right, there really IS a mounts thread every week!
Stay tuned next week for a very special flying mounts edition.
Honestly though, I did not intend to make this thread one to aggravate the masses of you forum dwellers.
For lemon skittles to degrade someone’s game’s performance, they’d have to drop the skittles on their CPU or into a Ram slot. Chance of this occurring: pretty small. For mounts to degrade some peoples’ game’s performance, they would only have to be on screen. Chances of that occurring: virtually every play session.
I’m not saying I’m opposed to all of the items on your list, but having some of them is not going to be a win/no effect scenario, but a win/lose. Responsible devs take the issues of both sides into consideration.
The one I have strong feelings about is P2P trading. That’s a no from me — because it would affect me due to: greater inflation as more people choose to bypass the only major gold sink in the game; and WTS spam in chat. I should not have to disable chat channels so players can bypass the TP.
In regards to the performance loss of mounts, perhaps it’s time for the addition of a new API. Dx 11 would require quite an overhaul, but if something is so obviously beneficial to the game, why refrain from taking the next step?
You have mounts. They’re called Toys. You have dueling. It’s called custom arenas. Lot of the other kitten you want require far more resources than they’re actually worth. Not a lot of people would even WANT them in the first place.
Oh yea, Trading? IT EXISTS. Use the flipping trade post for crying out loud. You are NOT going to get player to player trading. Anet’s stated that repeatedly. It’s not happening. Successfully dividing by zero has a bigger chance of success. The trade post is your player to player trading. Stop asking for ways to avoid the fees. Just pay up.
._.
It might improve the game for you, but it could ruin the game for someone else. It’s not as simple as “just ignore it”.
I fail to see how the addition of being able to go horse back, being able to ask someone to a duel, or being able to trade, would ruin the game for someone who doesn’t care for mounts, doesn’t pvp, or thinks a trading system is unnecessary. Please explain how any of these features can totally, indefinitely, ruin the game for someone who simply does not have to use/partake in these additional features. A dungeon runner does not enjoy WvW. Is the existence of WvW ruining the game for him?
Regardless, having something over not having it is always a positive.
lolno.
That was a pretty eloquent argument. All the same, I’d prefer if you elaborated your strong stance on the matter.
I simply fail to see how having something, just because one person (or one small group of people) want it, means it’s automatically a positive thing and better for everyone. I mean, my seven year-old wants a pet crocodile. A real one. Having one would not be a positive for any parties involved (unless you look at it from my seven year-old’s point of view).
So, in contrast, we are the 7 year olds demanding pet crocodiles? I’m sure your 7 year old doesn’t understand the dangers of having a pet crocodile, to both himself and everyone near it. But, then, would that mean that we, the 7 year olds, don’t understand the damages our pet crocodiles (open world dueling, mounts) would have on the community? If this is what I’m to understand by your logic, then I disagree with it. The pet crocodile is not beneficial to anyone. Open world pvp, mounts, and trading, is. My quote may have been vague, but there was context behind it, so your analogy doesn’t really apply.
The analogy is flawed. By developing something that is by equal measure not wanted, resources are wasted on something that is for the benefit of the game. Duelling I can ignore, mounts I can ignore, but the development of both will block features more important to the game. Mounts will also increase server load and lag and thus effect myself and others.
Lemon skittles would not have this effect
Although now I want Skittles….
That lemon skittle is a cluster of precious sucrose resource that could’ve been a strawberry skittle. But it was still made for the individuals who love them. I dont see how the implementation of mounts, trading, dueling, would block more “important” features to the game. It adds a new layer of content catering to a albeit smaller portion of their community. I still don’t see how crippling the development process would be that it’d have to halt all other processes of development
If there are equal or more valid reasons not to add them deal with it,anyway it’s minor compared to bugs, hackers, balance etc. Also those wanting duels call duel specs cheese…while I would like open PK with no sieges etc GW2 is too casual for that.
That’s the beauty of evolution. If there’s something that can be improved, why ignore it?
Regardless, having something over not having it is always a positive.
lolno.
That was a pretty eloquent argument. All the same, I’d prefer if you elaborated your strong stance on the matter.
Mounts as a game mechanic are totally unnecessary with the wp system. Cosmetic mounts already exist to some degree (carpet, broom) and will likely continue as toys.
Open world 1v1 dueling would only increase community toxicity. There are many threads on the topic, hence why people are tired of hearing about it.
Community toxicity does not directly correlate to competitive play. There will always be conflict in competitive play, but no more than there already is with features such as WvW and sPvP. That argument is invalid, It’s a bias. I, for one, have a biased impression that PvP in fact helps generate a healthier community. Who’s to say I’m wrong?
Duelling and mounts are just as equally not wanted. It isn’t as simple an issue as players wanting it and it should be in. There are very big arguments against those features which have been had over and over again on these forums.
Regardless, having something over not having it is always a positive. If it’s not your thing, don’t do it. If it’s your thing, well, its there, have fun.
“I don’t like lemon skittles. lemon skittles should not exist.”
Except, no, that’s not how the world works. If you don’t like something, don’t do it. But some people enjoy things you don’t always agree with.
For years (since before the release of gw2), players have wanted things like mounts, open world dueling, dx 11 (and now dx 12) compatibility, trading, and so on. The amount of threads created in regards to these wanted features are plentiful, and still to this day, more are created. Everyone’s sick of seeing the same demands in new threads, and the more we ask, it seems, the less impact our cries for change have. This shouldn’t be the case. Usually, when something is so high in demand, and persists in consumer wishes, change is expected.
Dev’s like Digital Extremes (creators of Warframe) have spoiled me, I’ll admit. They’re so quick and eager to add or at least mention that they’ve heard our demands and are constantly evolving the game to fit the expectations of it’s loyal player base. When Warframe first released, talk of PvP was taboo. PvP was never envisioned in the grand scheme of Warframe. Months later, the devs implement a totally optional PvP arena mode. This is 1 example of at least the hundreds of changes and additions we’ve seen in Warframe, most of which were suggested by the actual players. The connection DE has made with their community is a beautiful thing, as it truly feels like we’re one large community, brainstorming to make the game better in every way. With Anet, i feel there’s a huge disconnect between them and the players. Sure, they have a clear goal, they have their plans for what they feel is best for the game. I respect that, and we’ve seen great things. However, there’s something to be said for engaging with your players’ and discussing ideas.
My question isn’t if we’ll ever see these features in gw2, but why don’t the devs at least explain their reasoning for not implementing these features, knowing how much their players want them? The game is evolving, and the same justifications 3 years ago can’t possibly be their only cop-out. If the demand is still very much present in current day GW2, then why isn’t it being looked into? Sure, you’ve got your focuses. HoT is a big deal. But HoT, being an expansion, would be the perfect time for big additions. Additions that players have wanted since the vanilla release.

Just tested this with my character, Male human at max height wielding a Twilight, and my friend, Male human same height wielding an Eternity. The blade of an eternity is much longer than that of a twilight. I was just curious to know if this was a known fact? or does it have something to do with client-side settings?
EDIT:
Here’s my proof. Note that we are both Human Males, max height. Also, this is only the case with this particular player.
Exhibit A: Display of same-height Humans.
http://i.imgur.com/38tcAW8.jpg?1
Exhibit B: Note the positioning of both Humans’ hands and feet are relatively in the same spot.
http://i.imgur.com/vM5eo16.jpg?1
Exhibit C: Both blades perfectly aligned, clear size difference.

So there you have it, I’m not crazy.

No thanks.
IMO the flaw with the current Legendaries is that for the most part they don’t have their own lore or place in the world, and thus they don’t have their own Legend. Not that it’s not more powerful than Ascended weapons.
The only thing that I’d say that should be added to Legendary weapons is the ability to swap Sigils along with stats and a back story as to why they are Legendary.
I always figured the legend was that of your own personal experiences and efforts. The legend is the journey you went through to create this ultimate weapon. ‘legend has it, the enter legendary weapon name here was forged by the great enter character name here as he scoured all the lands of Tyria, honed and mastered his/her talents..’ and so on.
checked the thing with the code in game.. the red glow is pulsating. Also there is a GS with a similar design and yellow glow…aswell a seriosly creepy looking LB also in that design pattern.. seems that set of weapons is something ill spend my money on.
Duuude nice, glad to hear it’s got some effect on it
oh look a longsword skin thats clearly magical yet not overdone, drowns in particles and is (most likely) not oversized. 10\10 will get
I’d actually like it if there was a little more reflective shine to the blade, and a misty red glow wouldnt hurt either
