So what is the build for power pew pew ranger?

While longbow got buffed a bit, I would advise against investing in this. The build lacks versatility, and in the long run it will boil down to just a noob killer (pew pew is ineffective against targets that know what ‘dodge’ is…). If you really want to go ranger, then look at the possibility of a short bow build. I am far more cautious of taking on short bow rangers than if I see a longbow button masher roaming around.

And for oneshot instakill thief?

Dagger main hand for backstab, probably traited for Hidden Killer. Often two sets of dagger/pistol with intelligence sigils for the 100% crits on weapon swap, and/or sigils of air, fire, or bloodlust.

A thief which can be invisible 90% of time making fool of 8 our players?

Dagger/pistol for black powder → heartseeker to chain stealth. Probably has utilities and traits on for initiative recovery.

A thief which can kill 6 players by some easy noob rotation – as raged by our exp player who was too killed by that thief.

This is a bit of a loaded question, especially as I would avoid classifying any legitimate rotation/tactic beyond heartseeker spamming as an ‘easy noob rotation.’ Tbh, your ‘experienced’ player might not be as good as you think, though I will concede that fighting a glassy backstab thief that knows how to use his stealths can be incredibly frustrating if no one has a reveal and you’re low on aoes. At any rate, most skilled thieves (indeed most skilled players) can knock out full parties if the skill gap is big enough.

Anyway, if you’re looking for a roamer build that has the versatility to do most things in WvW, I would avoid dagger/pistol myself. It’s a highly effective build at what it does (picking on single roamers and inexperienced havocs), but tends to be significantly less useful outside of that niche due to it’s low hp/defense and the often preclusion of shortbow as an offhand, depending on the build. You may want to invest in learning either a sword/dagger setup (which tends to be more survivable overall with higher HP, a weaponskill shadowstep/condi cleanse, and increased endurance regeneration) or a pistol/dagger dire condition build (with krait runes for a cheap build, perplexity runes if you have gold to burn and really want to be on the apex predator list).

Feel free to pm me if you want to talk build specifics.

Also this guide is just pointless. Who exactly is gaining anything from it and why would anyone bookmark it? In case you forget what supply is?

Considering how much WvW is struggling as a game mode outside of tier 1, I think this is a great idea for inducting new players. So yeah, it is kinda in case you forget what supply is, lol. Having ktrained a lot in EotM lately I can see this guide being invaluable to players making the transition from quasi-PvE to actual WvW.

So, with the upcoming release of details on HoT, and the constant talk of poor server matchups and stale WvW content, I’m curious what speculation there is out there of what might be included for WvW in the upcoming expansion. I’m also curious to hear the community’s feelings about the game should WvW continue to get pigeonholed in favor of other game modes like living story and sPvP.

To me WvW is too often instant “Game Over!”. E.g., just before posting this, a thief got 95% of my health with one hit. I had been 3 minutes in WvW. I rather would like to play the game longer.

Classes should be modified so that nobody can do instakills. Longer fights. Longer gameplay.

Alternatively the game should have a difficulty level. Those who like instakills would play with level “hard” and we the rest would play with level “casual”. Perhaps in different WvW maps if the idea causes somebody to rage.

This is why Edge of the Mists exists.

This was based on experience pre-patch. It’s true, however, that the problem is worse now.

Does the meta prefer perplex P/D over zerking D/P backstabing? I see two camps of people on the forums and I can’t tell who is TELLING ME THE TRUTH! I just want to be the best little roaming pain I can be!

D/P Backstab

or P/D perplex

Also, if you’re asking which can kill the other, it’s a bit of a tossup. I run perplexity, and it’s wicked hard to take out a good d/p stealth thief due to the innate cleanse and crazy blind/stealth mitigation. That said, it’s nigh impossible for them to kill me due to high armor, health pool, healing, interrupt, confusion/torment, gap creation from shadow strike, and my own (less frequent) mitigation.

So.. as with most thief v thief fights, barring perhaps fights between condi and sword builds, its quite a lot like playing battleship. -_-

Yeah, I’ve tried that, rarely if ever works out. In either case, I’m pretty sure the responsibility for content accessibility (especially open world content) is solely on the developers. It seems ridiculous they didn’t plan ahead on this kind of content to allow players access to it. It’s really a shame they haven’t seemed to plan out any kind of scaling as the majority of players flutter on to the next new grind.

I can only imagine what a nightmare the silverwastes will be once it gets pushed down to secondary content like this.

For PvP you’re gonna want to swap out Signet of Shadows for Shadowstep, and the same thing goes for if you want to fight anyone with heavy cc in WvW. Otherwise, for WvW and general PvE, the 25% speed boost is legit.

If you’re really set on doing a power/crit build but want the extra survivability, you probably want to look at either a dodge-centric S/D build, or consider D/P using full valkyrie/sentinel with hidden killer and signets of intelligence to give 100% crit.

Personally, I prefer that they don’t mess with the White Swords. But if they did, I’d like it as an upgradable option that you can buy called ‘Signal Fire’ or something, rather than removing them completely.

Not a fan. NSP and IoJ were already getting destroyed in t3, now we can’t even get out of our starting areas without getting facerolled at the first tower we touch. That goes for both EB and BL.

TL;DR: all problems in EotM stem from poor matchmaking in EB. Anet, fix this. Please and thank you.

I agree with you, but nothing’s gonna change and we all know it. Anet aren’t gonna fix WvW because it isn’t profitable, PvP has sponsorship and PvE has the playerbase and most of the gemstore catering to them. All WvW has to offer money wise is WXP boosters and permanent finishers, which I barely see anyone use.

Well, as long as we’re willing to say “it’s not going to change.” it wont. I’m optimistic that new WvW content will come when and if a new expansion is indeed coming out, as I doubt anet wants to lose the WvW all together. It would be nice to see some sooner than later, but eh, who knows.

There is one thing every competitive sport and/or game has in common: even number teams.

Cool idea but I think 50 is a bit low. I’d rather see a floating number, something along the lines of SmallestServer*1.25 or something, with a minimum amount being like 50 per team. There is something to be said for organizing and fielding more people, the problem is when it totally takes over the game to the point no one else has a chance of victory.

That’s what they were thinking when they made the match ups…. Otherwise it’s EoTM it’s not really… Important ….how balanced the matchups are.

Easy fix: don’t allow redundancy within tier, mix cross tier; i.e. dont put all the first seeds into OG, because that could really screw up the map balance. Oh wait, it already IS screwing up the map balance…

EoTM Off Balance

Reaven.3958

Edge of the Mist used to be fun. There was a karma train. We all took turns and we all got gold, loot, achievements, etc. For the past three weeks it’s been anything but fun. Over powered players that one shot you, or a small group of the same, while apparently none of the siege equipment or ranger’s arrows nor any thing else affects these OP toons. At all. Not even a scratch. Then having large guilds come in and destroy the ability to do any of the fun things created a depressing scenario which I became frustrated with and simply left. Not really wanting to go back if this is how it’s going to be. For two years I’ve enjoyed running in EoTM but lately, not so much. Maybe I’m getting old and jaded.

Blame the imbalance in tier 3. Anet can’t seem to wrap their mind around the fact that there are 4 tier-2 servers, and they certainly don’t seem to have a solution for it. For months now NSP and IoJ have been facing DR, YB, FA, and SoS — whichever one gets kicked out t2 for the week — and utterly destroyed (example: this week the score is FA – 222,938; NSP – 49,997; IoJ – 38,503; it’s been this way for months). So, because NSP and IoJ players are quitting WvW in droves due to the utter lack of hope/enjoyment fighting the comparatively overwhelming numbers of t2 servers, the Eternal Battlegrounds and Borderlands are all green, all the time. Since WvW is a ghost town except for the roaming green deathballs desperately looking for players to stomp, the bored players from whichever t2 server drops to 1st place in t3 for the week have little other option for WvW than to run in the kiddie pool/PvE quasi-WvW tutorial area known as EotM, which in turn has made Overgrowth into a bloated, bag-hunting monstrosity that dominates most matches with no objective save to ruin everyone else’s experience to kill time while they wait for the EB reset.

I’m all for challenging WvW, but there gets a point where it’s so imbalanced that the result is determined before the fight even begins. I don’t generally consider that to be in the realm of ‘fun’, unless you’re lucky enough to be on a green server and like beating up enemies that can’t fight back.

TL;DR: all problems in EotM stem from poor matchmaking in EB. Anet, fix this. Please and thank you.

Thief as a class needs a lot of work, and there are some very specific flaws the devs refuse to address or comment on. All good thoughts. I’m personally of the opinion it should have priority in whatever queue they use to prioritize ability effects, so I wholeheartedly agree with Anymras’s sentiment and wish they would implement a simple akin to what he suggested.

As far as forms of stealth that don’t cause reveal, while I appreciate the thought and the effort to establish a work around, the core issue here really needs to be fixed. The very notion of losing a utility slot as a workaround for clumsy implementation of an afterthought mechanic is nothing less of hateful to me.

Last Refuge is a Death Sentence

in Thief

Posted by: Reaven.3958

Reaven.3958

It isn’t uncommon for Cloak and Dagger and Last Refuge to trip over each other. When a thief drops below 25% HP during the Cloak and Dagger animation, Last Refuge triggers first, and stealth is immediately cancelled as Cloak and Dagger strikes the target and inflicts damage, leaving the critically wounded thief in Revealed status. This is nothing short of game breaking, and can totally change the outcome of a fight, especially in close duels and solo sPvP/WvW encounters against multiple players.

As a suggestion, I think it would be really great if the system could be tweaked to force priority for Cloak and Dagger (and Black Powder -> Heartseeker combo) over Last Refuge to avoid this problem in the future.

Stealth not Showing on Character Model

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Reaven.3958

Reaven.3958

Character models often fail to go transparent when stealthed. It seems there’s definitely more than one ways this can happen, but the most common I have experienced occurs when changing state while in stealth (i.e. getting downed, gaining a second stealth like Shadow Refuge, Veil, Black Powder via Last Refuge). However, stacking stealth with abilities does not seem to trigger the bug, I have only experienced it with automatic changes (such as downed or automatically triggered traits like last refuge) and abilities used on me by other players (namely Veil)

This can be incredibly game breaking as stealth-centric classes often have to rely on visual queues from effects (as one cannot simply stare at the status bar) to know when they’ve been triggered.

Example:

Player uses Cloak and Dagger to go into healing from Shadow’s Rejuvenation. Receive damage while stealthed, knocking hp below 25% and triggering Last Refuge. Character model turns opaque due and player assumes stealth from Cloak and Dagger has expired. Player uses Cloak and Dagger again to restealth, but since character, which now appears opaque to the player (though not to others), is still stealthed, the player breaks stealth and becomes Revealed. Player proceeds to get wrecked while unable to restealth and flee/heal/etc.

Pandering to their own Metrics

in WvW

Posted by: Reaven.3958

Reaven.3958

Anet have always referred to WvW as PvE. The additions that have been made to WvW have generally been PvE in nature.

WvW is heading more towards PvE than RvR mechanics because Anet are trying to encourage the PvE population to participate in WvW more actively.

I think as far as Anet are concerned EotM is a WvW success story as there are always many players there so it’s likely that is the direction that WvW will continue to go in.

I don’t WvW very often, pretty much never actually (Zerg vs Zerg, bleh). But I wish the other WvW maps were similar to EotM, not karma train-wise, but the layout would offer some truly impressive choices tactically.

yeah, EB and the BL have their own charm to be sure, but they can get a bit boring after a bit, especially with all the npcs looking the same and the terrain being somewhat homogeneous with slight texture changes.

Log on, do 3 dailies, enjoy your 10AP and go do whatever the heck else you want to do with all of the free time you will now have. That additional 2AP/day you aren’t able to get now must have been your favorite APs…

You’re essentially saying “please give me more for not playing the game.” If they’re going to reduce the effort needed to attain something, anet should look at something meaningful like the insanity of the WvW achievements, not fixing a system that wasn’t broken.

Really disappointed. The previous system wasn’t perfect, but it did give me a reason to jump different aspects of the game when I otherwise might not. There are plenty of times I thought “nah, I don’t really feel like sPvP today” but would jump in to get the daily, and wind up having a great time. Sometimes I might stay longer, sometimes not, but the daily goalpost gave me reason to jump into content I otherwise wouldn’t have, and I found significant value in that.

they are not being appreciative of what we have, and keeps on asking for more.

New player - How do I make this "fun"?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Reaven.3958

Reaven.3958

I bought this game almost a month back now and I’ve barely played it. Couple hours spent on it, thats all. I was looking for an MMORPG because I’ve enjoyed them in the past. Played Runescape for years. Played SWTOR for a month and only stopped because I didn’t have much time on my hands. I enjoyed Runescape a LONG time ago, and SWTOR recently.

Did some research on MMOs, found this, saw great reviews, how its the MMO that breaks the norm of grinding, saw an awesome review by Angry Joe. In particular, he mentioned he couldn’t get into SWTOR despite the awesome concept because of the lack of interesting game play. He struck me as someone who was looking for an MMO experience that actually had a soul to it.

So I spend 35$ on this, start playing, and what do I get? Maybe a few minutes of interesting story and then hours of follow the arrow, kill stuff for WAY longer than should be necessary, level up, move on. Seriously? This is exactly what I was told this game DOESN’T have. Why do I have to spend 15 minutes dancing for cows and killing worms by spamming a key to fill up a bar?

Honestly this is the reason I hate spending money on games these days.

The only reason I’m still trying is because I feel guilty for spending money on this.

So please help me find ways to make this experience more “fun”, since the game refuses to do that for me. I discovered the random events already. Besides that so far I’m just following arrows and doing side quests that involve killing 20 of something. Does this end? When does this end? Is there any other alternative to progressing in the game and hopefully getting somewhere better? What else can I do except be the NPC’s kitten?

HONESTLY despite being a WoW clone I found SWTOR a lot more fun.

You really shouldn’t be spending that long getting to 80. It’s doable in around 20 hours depending on how you level. The fastest way generally seems to be a mix of maxing low-level crafting (which gives mad exp) and grinding on Edge of the Mists. Another alternative is experiencing sPvP then using the level tomes you get from the reward track — albeit, much slower progression, but has the potential to be significantly more interesting than grinding heart quests.

Also, you can get an insane amount of exp from just exploration. Just leave the hearts for later when you feel like grinding out a quest or two and spend some time doing the way points, vistas and skill points, uncovering new areas, and hitting up a jumping puzzle or two. Don’t shy away from doing the dynamic events as they come across your path, they can also be quite rewarding, and often overlap with nearby heart quests (especially for kill quests) so they will literally give you two times the exp for the same (or less) amount of work.

tl;dr: You’re doing it wrong. Do some research and try doing something you don’t completely hate to get through the grind to 80.

“1.) Get rid of hot-join because trying to learn stuff in that is anti-fun anyways”

I trained in hotjoin to get good enough to compete in regular queued matches… found it much easier than the prepatch solo and team arenas.

“2.) You should be doing Ques [sic] so you can get custom arena stuff if you want to test out stuff with friends eventually.”

I do not understand what you’re saying here.

“3.) Make custom arena stuff more affordable through sPvP and maybe even through living world”

Not sure what you’re talking about here either.

“4.) Infrastructure, this game’s infrastructure is NOT BLATANT or obvious enough. Maybe add bot games or something so new players can actually learn? A better tutorial? Anything that will allow this game to move forward.”

I agree that the tutorial pre-lobby area is the worst I’ve probably ever seen (why would we need to re-learn how to revive someone..?). Bot practice matches might also be beneficial, but the AI would need to be significantly better than anything I’ve yet to see in the game to come close to being a challenge (as opposed to the rofltargets in heart of the mists). I don’t agree about the structure not being ‘obvious’ enough, though. The PvP menu is pretty straightforward — I never had problems finding stuff or getting around even on my first day using it.

Edge of the Mists Tower Gate Bug

So this is out of control, and I’m surprised I haven’t seen more chatter about it. Apparently one can glitch through gates on each of the three towers in Edge of the Mists, allowing for a mesmer to literally just walk in and port an entire zerg without dropping a single siege weapon. I’ve seen it happen again, and again, and again over the last few days. I’ve confirmed the bug on the East gate of Tytone, the East gate of Stonegaze, and the North-West gate of Infernal Needle. I’m unsure if the other gates can be glitched, these are just the one’s I’ve seen first hand. The mesmer runs up to a corner of the gate, seems to jump, then is suddenly on top of the gate and able to portal in the rest of the zerg. Not sure if any other abilities are involved, they just appear to be jumping/teleporting directly to the top of the gate.

Incredibly game breaking. Please fix as soon as possible.

GvG =/= OS. It just happens to be using OS arena, but has nothing to do with the JP.

Ironically, it’s BECAUSE of players camping the puzzle that Obsidian Sanctum died. The reason is because the kind of player who enjoys doing JP’s every single day is usually not the same kind of person who enjoys PvP

Logical fallacy: “I do not like PvP. I like jumping puzzles. You like jumping puzzles, therefore you must not like PvP.”

I love jumping puzzles, I guess I’m just not an easymode farmer on them, though. I enjoy the challenge of making it through, especially with the added risk of PvP. However, as I said in the OP, I wish they’d add some kind of reward giving sufficient incentive for both the individual players and the overall zerg to run it for personal rewards and some form of WvW bonus/boost.

Thieves and CC

in Thief

Posted by: Reaven.3958

Reaven.3958

This seems kind of odd to me. Thieves have two stabilities — dagger storm (90 sec cd), and assassin’s equilibrium trait (grandmaster acrobatics). There are blinds, of course, supposing you use a pistol offhand or blinding powder (40 sec cd) and/or assassins signet (30 sec cd).

So.. does this just mean condi thieves just aren’t intended to be viable in sPvP (given that I’m almost never going to be traited for equilibrium…)? Even trying traiting for equilibrium (which… frankly is a pretty crappy stability given not only do you have to guess when they’ll use a cc, but you have to plan your stealths around it to time the 1.5 sec stability just right), I get knocked around like a pinball against any cc-heavy team. Coming from the thief perspective, this feels incredibly imba, but am I just missing something? It seems odd that an engineer/warrior duo can literally juggle a thief between them to cc -lock to death without any opportunity for escape, outside of the odd chance that maybe, just maybe, a shadow signet (for instance) blind will block an incoming cc and give enough time to roll away, and not just be wasted on an auto attack in between the knockdown madness.

It seems that if thieves have to deal with Reveal to prevent constantly chaining stealth, knockbacks and knockdowns at least need to grant some kind of brief immunity to the target letting it have a chance to get back up and respond.

Match in Progress hotjoin

Can we get a hotjoin option for players to jump into matches already in progress to fill in spots vacated by afkers and ragequitters? Especially since the patch I’ve seen the overall level of QQ increase dramatically, with people quitting often after their first death or loss of a capture point, thus dooming the team to a slow and painful loss as the next 400-or-so points tick off to the end of the 4v5.

A feature like this would fix a lot of the problems I’ve at least been seeing historically and especially now. Especially if it had something like a 25-point boost incentive like the volunteer button in the private servers.

Yeah, I’ve spent way more money on this game than I would have spent in monthly subs at or about $14/mo for a normal subbed MMO. Your argument is invalid.

So far I’m actually liking the PvP upgrade, but I hate the asinine argument you’re making to silence dissenters.

Siege Equipment Permissions

in WvW

It would be really great to have the option for setting permissions on siege equipment you place, namely [guild], [party], [friends], and [only me]. All the time I see people troll suiciding in golems left in specific locations for specific purposes, among other unfortunate misuses of siege weaponry left in a specific spot for a specific, strategic purpose, and would love to see a feature like this allowing restricted access.

why are perplexity runes still here?

I assume you’re talking WvW?
Conditions are nigh-useless in WvW. Unlike sPvP where frequently people rely on their own condition cleansing, WvW allows to freely stack group cleansing together, allowing for very rapid and very reliable removal of any condition.

You can only use them against skirmishers, but then, what’s the point? You’re not going to make a large difference that way and any Warr/Engi able to utilize them well is needed on the frontline.

And if you roam, as always, you should instead start playing to win, not playing to lose. Roaming is equivalent to intentionally losing as someone else can just bring superior numbers, kill you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Doesn’t matter how classes, runes, skills or sigils are balanced, if you play roaming you shouldn’t care. That’s not what decides your fights.

This is a typical moot argument. You are right that conditions aren’t very effective in a typical zerg fight, but the rest of your message is misinformation.

I play on EU tier 1 server and solo roam a lot and do a lot of other small scale. It matters a LOT even during the busy prime time. In fact sometimes all the objectives we held on the map are solo capped by me. Outside the prime time, the objectives are often undefended or defended only by very small group, then the small scale matters even more.

Adding more and more imbalance just makes the competitive players want to leave WvWvW. A really good player doesn’t get much any pleasure winning the fight knowing she had an advantage because of the build or imbalanced circumstances. I know solo roaming is often 1 vs many, but adding brain dead runes to the games will not encourage more people to solo roam, but does the opposite. I pledge for more diversity instead of pushing everybody to be a zergling or troll using the latest gimmick build in roaming. Developers, please listen to the core WvWvW players, reduce the amount of imbalance there is in WvWvW and shake the WvWvW meta.

Several sigils and runes need to be toned down. This list includes Strength, Hoelbrak, Pack and Perplexity runes. And sigils of battle, air, fire, doom and energy. Yes, I know they are probably the most used sigils in the game and they should also be toned down for pvp.

I love this post so much it hurts.
