Invulnerability Exploits in WvW

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Reaven.3958

So it seems there’s a number of spots players can stand in the WvW areas to glitch into invulnerability (outside of the starting areas, of course). Is this something ArenaNet is aware of and working to fix? Abuse of the bug seems pretty rampant (given I’ve seen it happen a couple times in each of the WvW areas), and it’s game breaking in the extreme for roaming WvW game play (especially when, say, fighting a ranger).

It would be good to know if ArenaNet is indeed not aware of these exploitable areas — if so I’ll put the trouble into documenting them as I run across them so they can be eliminated.

Obsidian Sanctum Dead

in WvW

Reaven.3958

I’m a big fan of Obsidian Sanctum. I think the idea of a PvP dungeon/jump puzzle is pretty awesome. Sadly, it’s mostly dead. I haunt the place fairly frequently, and rarely see anyone actually running the puzzle. It’s mostly a forum for 1v1 dueling. I’ve got no problem with the 1v1 stuff (though, there’s private sPvP practice servers for that with far less risk of being trolled, but to each their own), but it’s unfortunate that the content is so disused when there’s so much opportunity for crazy antics and general hilarity from traps, high-stakes tightrope fights, and chasing each other in the dark!

So, this is my simple plea: ArenaNet, make Obsidian Sanctum worth running! As it stands (to the best of my knowledge, anyway) the only motivation for running the puzzle is shear enjoyment, which doesn’t factor into most player’s equations for time management (gotta chase the phat l3wt). There’s a one-time achievement most players have, and then on repeats you get a lackluster chest with maybe a master work and some other random junk. Please make this jump puzzle repeatable, and worth the time it takes to complete! Maybe not even the gear drop (though an improvement there would be nice), perhaps it could just be an area to control for an EB-wide buff like bloodlust in the borderlands, which would definitely give more incentive not just to complete the puzzle, but to actually compete for it.

Anyway, that would be really awesome, and it would be great to see content that’s apparently gotten tired and somewhat disused get a breath of fresh air. That is all.

Expanded Rotation

Yeah, I’ve worked in the industry before. Funny enough, those tactics are popular overall for spiking sales for important points in the internal metric cycle (hence a lot of sales managers use them to promote their numbers), but (depending on the nature of the business, of course) those kind of gimmicks often do more harm to overall revenues than good, and have a tendency to turn consumers deaf to otherwise useful buzzwords like ‘hot’ and ‘limited’ as neural adaptation kicks in.

Just because something is an incumbent industry standard doesn’t mean it’s effective or even benign, it often just boils down to the conflicted interest of middle management chasing a bonus or promotion. Not to say that anyone at ArenaNet is necessarily (or necessarily not) aiming for that, as a humble gamer I have little way of knowing that, but I do know the company is better than this, and is hurting their margin by imposing needless costs in the form of lost opportunity.

Plus it offends my self interest, which is what really gives me the motivation to go to the trouble of even writing this.

Just some player feedback: if more items were left longer (or permanently) in the gem store, at least speaking for myself, I’d be much more likely to increase my number of purchases. I tend to take a while to mull over a luxury purchase (like a skin from the gem store, for instance), and try to save up for it instead of just blowing money I have on hand. Usually by the time I’m able to be in a position to purchase anything decent from the gem store, it’s gone off rotation, and quite frequently (like… now) there’s absolutely nothing appealing available (subjective, I know, but regardless of your consumption preferences there will be dry times when there’s literally nothing worth buying — in your own opinion — that you don’t already have).

I know this is just me, but I can’t be the only one who tends to take time thinking about and planning for purchases that plays GW2, and I can’t help but wonder if ArenaNet is missing out on potentially significant revenues by trying to artificially inflate demand through ‘limited time offer’ rotations like this. For me, at least, it just means I’m less likely to make a purchase when something of promise shows up in the store, and far more likely to have moved on by time it comes back in rotation (if ever).

The most recent example would be Rox’s Quiver. When it was in rotation I was a) not in a position to throw $10 at a single skin item, and b) was unsure if it would even go with my character. Now, I’m pretty inclined to get it, but since it’s not in the gem shop I literally can’t give you (ArenaNet) my money, and there’s a significant probability that when and if it ever shows up again I’ll have gotten used to some other back skin and no longer be willing to meet the $10 price point.

Daggers and Trench Coats

Reaven.3958

The armor you get from the glorious track in PvP has no trench coat on it, so there’s a cheap way to get a skin without one. I got tired enough with trench coats also that all of my thieves are wearing glorious armor right now….

Yeah, that’s always nice, but it’s like one set out of 30-40? Diversity, c’mon!

Condition Thief

Reaven.3958

Condithief is alive and well. The most broken condi build at the moment is perplexity — you can find YouTube videos of thieves very successfully WvW roaming with only an offhand pistol equipped — but word is that that’s getting the nerfbat soon. Besides, to gear that build it’d cost ~70 gold just for the runes.

I’m currently running a bleeding build centered on caltrops and basilisk venom+krait runes. It works in most every situation in WvW and sPvP, and is a great bunker buster for taking out entrenched engineers in sPvP. However, due to caltrops’ limited range, it does tend to be more effective in closed spaces like capture points and keeps, but if you’re good at baiting your enemy and dancing them into the aoe in an open area engagement, it’s still quite effective. I do use Signet of Shadows, which I often see people trashing on the forums, but having done my own A and B tests I find for my preferred play style there’s really no substitute for the 25% movement boost, both for pursuing objectives and for simply out maneuvering enemies (it’s also a great panic button for the 30-sec-cd blind in case things get nasty between stealths).

Malcolm Quill’s Ballistic Trauma 1.0 Build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAqYVl0Mp7pNPxzJ8PNBNRxdNkCzg3XRXshaFAA-TZRAABA8AAi+MAQWZAPOEA9s/AA

Since the above link only lists sPvP gear, I’ll add that for WvW I use all dire gear, and weapons and accessories that share the same stat grouping, namely condition damage (primary), toughness (secondary), and vitality (secondary). This setup keeps 1v1 and other small skirmishes quite viable, but also gives great survivability in zerg clashes.

So there’s a lot of trench coats for thieves. In fact, something around 80-90% of thief gear can be classified as such. I wish there was more diversity, but it’s alright. However, can we at least get a fix for the weapon drawn animation (for Sylvari, anyway — I don’t know about how other races look on thief when idle) that would involve our characters not constantly stabbing their left leg with their off-hand dagger? That would be great.

Keybinds by Character

Reaven.3958

I don’t really know how difficult this would be to implement from a development standpoint, but just some feedback from my own player experience (that will likely never reach dev’s ears, but it would be awesome if it did) is that it would be great to have the option to tie key binds to characters instead of the whole account (with the ability to import settings from other characters for ease of use). Personally, I use very different key binds for, say, elementalist, than I do for thief, given the class mechanics are very different.

Anyway, if anyone in the community thinks this is a good idea, feel free to say so. If not, I suppose this will just die a quiet death.

Cheers.

My concern is mostly in a 1v1 scenario. Supposing all things are equal (skill, experience, etc.) and the players are both down at the same time, the ranger will win every time.

Not true. Warrior will just self rezz and stomp you.

eyeroll OK, “almost” unstoppable. Theres 1 profession that can keep up because of their own ridiculous skill. You got me there.

My concern is mostly in a 1v1 scenario. Supposing all things are equal (skill, experience, etc.) and the players are both down at the same time, the ranger will win every time. Thief, for instance, gets what… a super short-range blink and a like 2-second blind/invisibility? Can’t interrupt the pet, and can’t out DPS the heals with throwing daggers. It’s GG, no skill required once down is achieved.

It’s fine if it’s working as intended, but the imba is real. So, if they really want rangers to have an uber heal unbeatable downed-state pet mechanic, it’d be great if everyone else could get something equally powerful (in my case, maybe an extension on the downed invisibility would be nice!! Maybe something in the ballpark of the pet heal duration?).

1) I don’t see how it would make walls useless. That seems like saying that grappling hooks make walls obsolete in real life.

Q&A: shadowstep and walls

Reaven.3958

So I’m relatively new to the game. Hi! I’ve looked through the forums on this but haven’t found a thread with any official response, or even a really convincing argument from the community to my question: why can’t thieves shadow step up walls? I know they used to be able to (and to the best of my knowledge it’s been removed — correct and educate me if this is not the case!). I don’t understand the logic behind preventing this. It seems like it fits within what the class should be able to do conceptually as thieves and assassins, and I don’t really see the balance issue — sure, the thief can get up and wreak havoc, but at extreme risk to himself. If nothing else it would just force more players to position atop walls during a siege, and I don’t really see what’s wrong with that.

Anyway, before I get up in arms about it, if I’m totally out of line help me see the light. Please, though, don’t flame or be condescending. Let me know why you think the current state of things is justified, or, if you don’t, make your case to the contrary!

Thanks for your time!

What: Thieves.
Why: They are too OP. Why do we even need this class to ruin the whole game for us? Lets just remove the whole class so that all the other ones won’t feel like the underdog.
