Alright ladies and gentlemen,

ANET is a COMPANY one that needs to pay the bills to keep the lights on, and pay their employees so they can feed their families. They have to make money somehow. You have to look at this as the real world bit doesn’t matter what you think of companies and gaming companies they have to make money just like everyone else.

Did you really think that $60 to buy the game was going to keep the ArenaNet company continuing to survive and thrive? Of course not let’s be real. I have NO problem with them putting cool items in the shop like skins that people can buy with cash. Hey good on you if you win one. They need people to spend money somewhere to keep the company up. The content is free the events are free, there is nothing that you need to spend money on. The quests and costume fights are free. All spending is optional this is in now way ‘gouging’ their customers. This is the real world companies need to make money. Honestly I am extremely happy with the way the update/event is as its not mandatory to buy anything.

You can buy gems with gold, gems can buy you everything, you can buy ALL the items on the TP as they are tradeable.

Thanks for the hard work ANET and i appreciate the update and events its been fun so far!

You realize this same company ran Guild Wars for several years, before they ever even introduced a real cash shop to the game? And even after they did, that they successfully made the game thrive without using cheap tricks like the box gimmick, right? I doubt that suddenly they’re strapped for cash and desperately need to wring our wallets.

In short, that’s a horrible attempt to justify the drop rate. People don’t seem to understand that most of us who are upset do not want to be spoon fed the loot. We want a reasonable chance at it, nothing more. 5% chance for a rare? Reasonable (any rare, doesn’t have to be the one we’re after). 0.5% (roughly the guess at the chance to get anything)? Not reasonable in the least.

20 Chests. That’s 1800 Gems worth of keys.
Compare to the actual 200 you’d need to open to (almost) guarantee a drop. That’s 18000 Gems worth of keys.

Yeah, that’s perfectly sensible. Owait.

Oh great, another “don’t complain cause you don’t have shiniez” thread by someone who doesn’t understand what people are upset about. It’s a gamble to open the Black Lion Chests, yes. We all know that from the get-go, but unlike a casino we didn’t know the odds. We learned that after forking out wads of cash (for some people, I hear over a hundred chests) for nothing but the usual junk. Yeah, that’s perfectly understandable. Everyone should be allowed to be half-honest about their business ventures. It’d make the world a much better place. /sarcasm end

I’ve seen quite a few posts here talking about how this is his F2P games are run, relying on RNG to help them make a profit. Yeah, that is true (literally, you hit the nail on the head). But that wasn’t the case with ArenaNet in Guild Wars 1. They were generous with their holiday rewards, and to see that mentality completely disappear is a huge shock to me. As some people have been saying here, it’s a huge blow to the trust people placed in the company. It’s not something you can just wave a hand around and fix. But yeah, perhaps people went a bit over the top with their outcry (myself included) but being upset when you feel you’ve been ripped off is hardly a crime.

I’ve opened dozens of chests and gotten nothing (aside from a huge stock of the regular chest drops). Other people have opened far, far more than myself and been denied any of the skins. That is where the issue begins. If this was a 10-20% drop rate, there wouldn’t be an outcry aside from extremely unlucky players. RNG shouldn’t be allowed to be this bad when RMT is involved.

To those who’re crying out that the items are meant to be rare, yes, that’s true. A year from now these will be rare, especially if ANet decides to release new designs each year instead of recycling old rewards (which, from experience in GW1, seems quite likely). As time goes by these will become more and more rare of their own accord. For those of us here now, supporting the game from the beginning, making it this rare off the bat is ridiculous.

I don’t know about that, there’s quite a bit of variety in weapons if you’re willing to go around and look—and four hundred gems is a bit too cheap. Seven hundred (the same as the costumes) is much more reasonable—enough to discourage people from buying them en masse for their characters.

I’m fairly sure that the crafted equipment has a different appearance, but I could be wrong. Not many of them have been discovered yet, from what I know.

I’ve seen quite a few of your posts around here, Alexander. Is it just me or do you never have anything productive to add to a conversation aside from a halfwit’s attempt at trolling?

That aside, the drop rate is/was extremely low. It’s not a big deal, although many people expected (as is tradition in GW1) for the rewards to be generous, not greedy. It was an assumption on the players’ part and it bit us in the rear for it. It happens, chances are it won’t change. Move along.

This is what should have been done in the first place, but from the perspective of someone who wants to make money, forcing players to play the lottery is a significantly more profitable venture. That, and changing it at this point might tick off more than a few players, sadly.

EDIT: Rarity shouldn’t matter—if they’re unique to this year’s Halloween event then they WILL become rare as time goes by.

Real talk though, Guild Wars has always been heavily dependent on word of mouth, I’m truly surprised that you guys pulled a stunt like this without thinking how many people are going to posting negative feedback.

Truthfully that tends to be the case with most MMOs, though—just look at some of the more recent ones and what happened to them when people spread rumors/were honest about their experiences. It never pans out well.

You are not guaranteed to receive a rare item after opening a Black Lion Chest. You have a chance to get a unique/rare item. Some people are luckier than others. The Halloween skins are tradeable, so if you aren’t able to get them in a Black Lion Chest, you can obtain them on the Trading Post.

You’re right, it’s a chance. That was made clear from the beginning. However, next time do us the honor of telling exactly how pitifully low the drop chance is so that we know not to waste our hard-earned money lining your pockets, please.

Yeah, the drop rate seems to be lower than a percent. It’s probably more worthwhile to just buy the skins off the TP with the drop rate. Not worth it.

“A fool and his money are soon parted.”

But then there’s the equally true adage:

“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

I rather doubt people will buy keys on future holidays.

Isn’t it more along the lines of “chances are people won’t ever let ANet near their money again, ever.”?

They wouldn’t want to warn us about the skin drop rate—they’d make less money that way. Let’s face it, ANet isn’t the company they were back during GW1 times anymore—they’re just out for a quick buck now. Sad to say it, but that drop rate just reinforces that thought.

Yeah, opened a horde of chests myself and got squat. Pretty much goes to show that ANet’ll do anything for a quick buck. -.-;
