Shortbow is decent on condi/hybrid set-ups. I haven’t really used it myself in a while though. You should come back and try longbow, its sooo much better than it used to be.
If you went 6/0/2/6/0 you could get the Survival of the Fittest Trait which would give you lots of active condition clear and fury from using survival skills. I think that the Survival of the Fittest trait was actually more of a buff to Ranger than what they did to longbow and like Empathic Bond used to be, I have a hard time being happy with a build that doesn’t have it.
If your first trait in Marksmanship is Keen Edge, then you will have another instance of Fury and condi clear for free.
New downstate: Possession.
Upon entering downstate, player takes immediate control of pet, getting all of the pets skills and adding Lick Wounds for the 5th skill. AI Ranger now spams self rez off cool down. Continues until the pet is downed or the ranger killed. (Quickness on down not seeming as much of a waste?)
PS: I hope Greatsword #4 Blades trail should get a speed update just as thieves got speed update to dancing dagger. This skill travels way too slow to tag a fleeing enemy.
And it should be able to fly upwards to hit enemies on walls etc :/
Good point. It makes a lot of sense that it should.
This, but only if Ranger OH Axe #4 can do the same thing
I wouldn’t mind losing traps. I’m hoping staff is going to provide enough control to make a beast-master style spec more reliable and more engaging. But even that is sort of a bandage instead of fixing the animation issue with.pets that makes them so terrible vs. moving targets.
For one of the next specializations, I’d like to see a more archer/survivalist spec which ditches the pet and replaces the f1-f4 with a quiver that held different limited use charges of arrow types for different effects, and with very long cast times when emptied, like mantras. Or maybe have the f1-f4 change depending on equipped weapon so that melee rangers get utility out of it as well.
Edit: Sorry for the triple post, my phone went sort of berserk for a bit.

I run 2/0/6/6/0 with zerker ammy, fire/air sigils, ranger runes.
Traits are:
Keen Edge
Wilderness Knowledge, Off-Hand Training, Bark Skin
Nature’s Protection?(The protection on damage one), Evasive Purity, Survival of the Fittest
Sword/Axe & Sword/Dagger
Troll Ungent, Muddy Terrain, Quickening Zephyr(can put whatever else here if you don’t like QZ), Lightning Reflexes, Entangle
You get lots of survivability from physical damage with protection + bark skin and tons of condi clear from SotF along with solid pressure from zerker amulet + sigils and high poison uptime.
It’s more of a bruiser spec than burst with trait selection, but massive fun to play.
Only spec that really gives me trouble often is D/D cele ele, because of its massive sustain, but we’ll see if its still that troublesome after the patch.
Typed this on my phone at work so the trait names may not be 100% accurate.
I don’t care what shape it takes but a pet with low cooldown heals on its normal rotations so that compassion training can get some use.
The individual skill required for the 15+ “GvGs” is pretty low. You just have to know what your buttons do, and it doesn’t actually take much for mechanics at all. What they do require is discipline (which I lack entirely) and communication/coordination. The biggest issue for me is how diluted individual contribution becomes as the number of participants increases, which is why after participating in several GvG’s, I lost interest and switched to sPvP and solo/small group roaming in wvw.
The thing that excites me about Stronghold is the potential variety of roles, builds and strategies that can be employed. With conquest, there are basically only two builds/roles. People who sit on points, and people who can move between points quickly to help down people who sit on points… and that’s it. So yeah, a whole new meta is pretty hype.
For the record, I’m not saying that people who participate in wvw gvg’s are unskilled as I’m sure there are lots of people with great mechanics/strategy, many of whom are probably better at GW2 than myself. But that doesn’t change the low skill floor or ceiling of those fights.
Because, whether I’m running S/D+GS or S/D+S/A, melee ranger is extremely effective vs lb rangers
It’s my understanding that the NA T1 servers are “rigging the game” so to speak so that the ppl and guilds in T1 can play for fights or whatever. But couldn’t this same system work if those same guilds went to the bottom tier and kept themselves there? And wouldn’t that also free up the ppl who love PPT (not me) to move into T1?
I know evis isn’t special and that’s a large part of why I chose that in my initial post, as even a mediocre burst skill would be largely more useful in many scenarios than a ranger pet and the accompanying dps loss. The other reason would be to have a solid skill to use with moment of clarity like evis or final thrust. You think evis is telegraphed? Maul puts a giant roaring bear over your head, you could dodge it blindfolded.
As far as the 2v1 on point argument goes, it wouldn’t be any better to have a lich form necro or Gs mesmer on the ledge freecasting. Any dps class left alone will wreck you. Also, this whole line of discussion about LB doesn’t have anything to do with class mechanics.
You don’t even need quick reactions to mitigate RF’s damage, since its channeled. Also things like Retal. The only class with a legitimate complaint vs lb rangers are necros. For every one else it’s pretty much l2p. Although this is all aside from the topic which is profession mechanics and I will still trade you. You can have 30% of your dps tied to a pet who can’t hit anything that isn’t immob’d and ill take eviscerate. Cuz eviscerate + Moment of Clarity… I get all tingly just thinking about it.
Lol @ Ranger burst not being fair. When power rangers were getting blown up by thieves we got nothing but l2p and we did. We learned to track, predict and dodge invisible attackers. You can see RF. It is not instant burst. It can be blocked, reflected etc, even if your slightly late with your reaction you will still block most of the damage. L2P.
As for those people saying they shouldn’t have tweak their build or change a utility are severely lacking perspective. For the last 2 years thieves and mesmers have effectively nullified any other zerker build. (this is still true in sPvP) Rangers didn’t just have to tweak our power builds, we had to abandon power builds all together or fight an uphill battle.
All that being said, I would still rather face a ranger than any other class since I’ve put so much time into ranger and know the class in and out. Also, I rarely use lb and prefer the melee ranger. Have had great fun roaming the last few days on s/d, s/a celestial build.
As someone with 2 level 80 rangers, I will trade you everything pet related, traits included, for just eviscerate.
