No, I hate the new ascended items.
As ArenaNet said themselves, this game will not be for everyone. Please don’t try and make it appeal to everyone now because you’ll end up not appealing to anyone in particular and end up making GW2 vanilla.
I have a feeling 25-50% of people who purhcased GW2 didn’t read about what they were getting into. Then when they didn’t find a carrot on a stick they got bored, and complained.
Then give the people who don’t want a gear grind a break. Guild Wars 2 is the only MMO where I’m not screwed because I haven’t done months of raiding.
Infusion was a minor and ham-fisted plot device. There was no reason to turn it in to a core mechanic.
well ok this is only my second mmo, but isn’t more endgame content a good thing generally?
and as far as im aware even though ascended gear is more powerful its mainly for use in the fractal dungeon right now, it doesn’t really disrupt the balance of pvp or even wvw, i guess you’ll just have to worry about those elitists who only focus on stats when dungeoning but that comes with any game, just make your own group.
Having tiers of gear isn’t an endgame. It’s just a carrot on a stick.
maybe if you people complaining would have bought some gems, this wouldn’t have happened.
People have obviously been buying gems and a lot of them if you read the financial reports that they gave for NCSoft investors.
No, this isn’t because of the core audience not paying up. This is because P.O.S no-lifers spent 1000 hours in the game since launch and are now complaining because they’ve done everything in the game faster than any development team can hope to keep up with. Now those whiny MMO addicts have twisted the one game that didn’t pander to them.
I read the report. It did not separate out cash shop revenue. It showed GW2 making around 3 mill won (or w/e) more than B&S, 13 mill more than Aion, 20mill more than Lineage 1&2.
The thing is all these games offer some form of sub and will surpass GW2 launch sales quickly. Maybe by the end of this yeah in B&S and Aion’s case. On top of that Anet is still in the red.
Much more needs to be spent in the case shop, and people need to be happy doing it. The forst step is to get them staying in game longer. Thus the new progression system. Remember we still haven’t heard how the cash shop will play into this.
I can gauredamntee I’m never taking another look at any Areanet product again if the cash shop has anything to do with character progression.
Out of curiosity, how much grind are you all expecting to do to find two rings and a back item that is intended to protect you from a new condition?
I wouldn’t expect these things to be especially hard to come by. Now the exact combination of stats you want, without being able to craft…that would be tricky.
It’s going to be a full set of armor eventually. It even says so on the blog post.
Then there’s the next set of armor because the dungeon after this one needs you to stack more agony.
God this is a depressing thing to think about.
I never expected to hear the term “Best in slot” in a guild wars game. Especially not after the manifesto.
If this goes through, I’m asking for a refund, I think.
Exotic is Best in Slot..
…..
There’s a difference between have a “the best in slot” and a “new best in slot”. One is more worrying than the other in a game trying to get away from grinding.
Not only that, there’s two tiers of Ascended gear.
“rarer versions of the items also come with additional Agony Resistance built into them.”
Hope you can grind enough to get all the built in agony gear!
Let me ask you guys this..
How you going to to slot Superior Runes and Superior Sigils on these weapon and armor when they’re released.
Cause you can’t with the current ascended gear gear.
The blog post says
“There are multiple types of Infusions and Infusion slots. In November, we’ll introduce Offensive, Defensive, and Omni Infusions of Fine rarity from new Mystic Forge recipes. Infusion upgrade types must be paired with their like slot, with the exception of the rare and versatile Omni Infusions which can be slotted into any type of Infusion slot.”
And it should have been clear that showing magic find was the worst thing to do. I imagine that its odd rounding of the low MF number that allowed us to show 43% when primary stat increases for every other jewelry wouldn’t be that high. But this is all they gave us. More importantly this is what they gave us to try to appease the “its not a gear grind/tiered gear system”. Furthermore I suspect they showed the magic find gear because to them it looked less innocuous than the regular stat spread gear. Because they saw a 3% increase and only thought about the number 3, which is of course small. Nevermind that the MF is the primary stat and that it is effectively a 43% increase.
If the level of competency shown in giving us this preview is consistent with the level of competency show in creating this gear is constant, it doesn’t bode well.
Why should I have to have a certain type of gear to do a dungeon? Because WoW does?
But you don’t, Fractals sounds like it will be clear of agony and thus the need for ascended gear until the deeper levels. Which means you can still do Fractals with whatever gear you have. The only purpose going deeper serves is to cater to people who want a greater degree of challenge in their dungeons. This is what I think people are forgetting here, this isn’t a system that flat out prevents you from doing content unless you have the gear for it.
Ah, so the poopsockers get better gear than me now. I’ll just play WoW if I want to be harassed by someone with 15 more stat points than me.
How about we just add gearscore and get it over with?
But we have no reason to believe that deeper levels give better gear. Also there’s no need for name calling here. I’m trying to understand your point of view, and explain mine.
There was no reason to believe gear would get better, but then we have that screenshot posted a few hours ago. I’m just frustrated because what was a sure thing is up in smoke.

I know I’m coming off as a dick, but I really like this game and I don’t want it to turn in to a gear grind. I don’t want anything resembling a numbers game.
Some maths, before giving my own thoughts, since everyone seems to be missing this:
What you are seeing from the picture on the blog is an 8% stat increase, from exotic to ascended, per stat. As a reminder: stats scale your power linearly in GW2, meaning that an 8% increase in a single stat increases your power, roughly, by 8%.
However, each item at level 80 has three stats. This means that a linear increase across all stats from one item to the next results in a cubic increase in power. To make this more clear: increasing your power by 8% increases your damage by 8%. But increasing your precision by 8% also increases your damage by 8%, the same is also roughly true of crit damage. If you increase all three of these stats by 8%, as the ascended armor does, you get a whopping 26% in damage.
TLDR Ascended armor, judging from the official info we have available, is roughly 26% more powerful than exotics. If/when ascended items are available for all slots, if you equip them, you will be able to kill people in WvWvW 26% faster than they can kill you.
Really? you’re going to try and bring up WvWvW that had a far greater system in it called Orbs up until a little while ago..
The Bonus stats weren’t the big problem with Orbs, it was the 15% bonus to Health that was the problem.
All orbs did was give more power to an already dominant side.
Would it still be offensive to you if Ascended items were just ever a single tier of gear and the only thing that they ever added after this were new types of infusions that only had an impact on the deeper more challenging parts of dungeons (assuming that they use the Fractals model of increasing difficulty)?
Why should I have to have a certain type of gear to do a dungeon? Because WoW does?
Maybe they were testing the waters. Checking where their playerbase’s loyalties really were.
Maybe they know that this could be a very bad decision in a game catered to a niche market, but wanted to be absolutely sure.
Please let this be a test or something.
Thing is, those people have gone back to WoW and no longer care about GW2. Anet is pandering to a player base that they cannot keep interested in their game.
And for any that are still around, they will once again get their best in slot gear after a week, and then immediately return to moping around forums that there is nothing to do. This isn’t a hard concept to grasp, which is why I’m amazed that they’re doing this. If someone isn’t happy because they can’t get better gear, giving them better gear won’t satisfy them because they will just want the next set of better gear. Allow me to submit as exhibit A every freaking MMO for the last 10 years.
Super-duper epic end game sets in WoW at launch gave less stats than a single piece of green gear at top level does now. It’s an endless cycle. That’s obviously why people are so worried. It doesn’t matter if it’s +1 stat per piece of gear today. What’s it going to be tomorrow? Where does it end? (Hint, it doesn’t)
I understand people are angry/disappointed/annoyed, but why are so many of you being so melodramatic?
I don’t like the idea of gear grind or forcing us to have certain gear to experience certain content but threatening to quit or demanding a refund based on a blog post is really over the top.
Is it really? They’re going against what makes Guild Wars Guild Wars. They’re taking all of the promises, all of the amazing things that were meant to separate this game from conventional MMO’s and burning it to the ground. There are many of us who have been waiting for this game since 2007, following every update, magazine article and blog, and to say that this game hasn’t been an utter disappointment is an under exaggeration. It’s like what Peter Moleneux promised for the original fable.
Of course it’s over the top. No one has even played this update yet to see how they like it for themselves in action, and yet we have people threatening to quit.
Unless players specifically wanted to avoid any kind of gear upgrade system.

Guild Wars 2
Bleh
Guild Wars was my first MMO after playing Runescape in the computer lab during middle school. I still remember a lot of what made the game great. I was never behind on gear progression and after just a short while, my brand new character was up to par and I was able to hold my own against people who had been playing for months.
Then I started playing WoW. Not going to lie, I pretty much dropped Guild Wars for years at that point. It was great at first, a whole world that was uninstanced. Then, you realize that your gear grind sets in. Oh, those first dungeon sets only had an extra 5 or 10 points, but suddenly they’re not as good since there’s a new dungeon. Next thing you know, you’re pulling all nighters because you can’t do that next raid without getting better gear.
It might start with one or two points, but in a year where will we be at? A nice extra 50 to top thing off?
I really like Guild Wars 2. Me posting on the official forums for an MMO should show that, since I normally avoid these things like the plague.
Don’t turn this in to just another gear grind MMO when you’ve already accomplished so much. For what it’s worth, I cancelled my WoW subscription a few days after buying Guild Wars 2. If I’m suddenly not good enough for group play because I didn’t grind out the last tier, then I’m done with the game.
This is the last MMO I’m going to play. Please don’t screw it up.
Thanks, I’ll be sure to think to myself “What would Sarahphim do?” in the future.
I just blew about 3 gold on some gear since I was tired of about four zones without any new looks as a leather user. I didn’t know Knight’s gear was for 80s and I assumed Noble armor was around level 30 since it’s close to that tier for crafting.
Now I’m screwed out of my gold and have to stick with the same look I’ve had since level 5. Please put some levels on the bags of gear.
Grenadier is definitely one of the more popular builds for a reason. For sieges, it’s great all around for attacking and defending. I’ve also had a lot of luck with zergs, you’re able to do a lot of damage from really far away, which is handy since you’re not tanky as a grenadier.
Your mileage may vary on things such as roaming and small groups where it’s harder to clump everyone together, but it’s still a very good choice.
I love the engineer. No, really, the class is awesome. I keep coming back to it once my altitis dies down. I have a few problems with how the class is now, but I’m sure a lot of the issues engineers face right now will be addressed in the coming months.
One thing I’ve been hoping for is the ability to hide our backpacks. For some races, such as human females, their heads clip pretty badly through some of them. Another large issue is that your backpack you get for grenades at level 5 is the same one you’ll have at level 80. I really like some of the leather armor, and it’s a shame I can’t really see it while I’m running around because my backpack is covering it up.
That brings me to another thing I was wondering would be fixed. Right now, while in a kit you’re always in your combat ready stance. For some reason, it really bugs me. It’s not like the wrench or flamethrower couldn’t be sheathed on your waist/back.
I know that silly cosmetic things must be way on the backburner while they clear up launch issues and bugged abilities, but having just a few simple changes to the aesthetic would go a long way.
Im not finding proof of that quote anywhere in the linked post…
Pretty confused here…
There is no proof, just a guy who claims it was said in the mists…hence why there is not much reason to be overly excited. It would seem unlikely that given their track record they are going to be holding a event plus what would seem major changes for professions at the same time. Perhaps there is 30 bullets worth of changes in the future for engi but I don’t think we can count on it being this upcoming patch. I hope of course I am wrong
It’s more than hearsay.
only if I can turn everyones off, capes = huge processing demand increase in large zergs. How many other games have you been asked ‘can everyone turn off their capes please?’ Let’s not add that.
EDIT: Thought of a solution … make capes town clothing only.
It would be no more than all those swishy bits on everyone’s armor.
The human cultural T3 armor is obviously heavily influenced by the original Knight armor from Guild Wars 1, but are there any plans at all to add the old school set with some fancy new polygons to the cash shop? That set was pretty defining of a warrior for a long while. I remember getting a run to Droknar’s Forge just to get a peek at it on the vendor.
What I’m trying to say is please let me give you more money, Anet.
