You can get a lot of benefit from Runes of Lyssa compared to other elites, although it would be handy if the condition removal fired at the start rather than the end of the channel. Personally I’d go for an extra second or two of duration, which isn’t unreasonable given the length of the CD

I usually switch to the healing signet when I play a dps build, despite the fact I love shelter alot more generally – just for the extra condition removal ( along with Smite Condition )

Usually by the time I actually need to pop the heal it’s obvious whether battle is either won or lost

awhile back I was pulled straight up into the air and out over the wall from inside the courtyard not even on the wall though I think it was siegerazer that did it. havn’t seen anything that crazy for awhile though.

No thats called lag lol. No skill can lift you. I often jump off walls to the inside of a keep, only to end up outside when landing. Quite hilarious.

Mesmer pulls are powerfull, but if you cant handle going outside the keep without dying, the keep is already lost. Or you’re a weaksauce zerker, whatever.

Nope, Siegerazer has done that to me too. I was on the outer edge of the wall and got hit with a binding blade style skill, I retreat to the back edge and I get pulled, I hit the wall and then went flying 100 feet straight upwards ( high enough to see the whole briar fort below me ). I land on the wall and die of fall damage…. wish I had video capture running then ;-)

Some wiki comments here mention that bonus condition duration is capped at 76% ( except under certain rare circumstances ).

However I’ve not found any references to a total duration limit for a condition applied to a target. I guess testing is the only way.

It’s not merely a question of adding the difference between personal dps lost vs the dps gain given to allies.

By switching you get access to alot of healing for you and your team ( meaning you can survive longer and therefore deal more damage), you get potential on-switch effects of sigil and/or food ( more endurance, chill or extra might for instance ) and you can drop a ward into the middle of a battle – in PvP this can really work to your advantage.

Remember if you use empower towards the end of your Weapon Swap CD you can carry over 12 stacks of might ( or more ) into your next GS combos, which will help mitigate the loss of DPS.

In BWE1 you still couldn’t perform skills while channelling and it rooted you in place.

Prior to that I think it was a utility skill call Meditate, which may have allowed attacks – but we are talking an age ago…

You should be able to apply that to any other skill in the game, by simply replacing the weapon damage and coefficient values with their appropriate values. Don’t see why it wouldn’t be accurate.

Well it’s the assumption that modifiers are multiplicative rather than additive that I guess will warrant testing on other skills

but in sPVP you’ll never see those numbers.

You can cast focus #4 at the start to land at the same instant you teleport in for a bit extra damage ( it helps protect your Aegis too ) – and/or ofc VoJ the moment you arrive for the vuln+blind+guaranteed burn.

There is a borderline “exploit” that allows you to ( in my tests I could one-shot AoE a group of heavy golems in a single hit in the mists – they have about 13k of health ) – I seriously doubt he’d be using that though ;-)

ah foofad, your coefficient calculation for secondary projectiles:

Whirling Wrath [2.8 for primary strikes (.4 each * 7), .15 for secondary projectiles]

is that .15 per projectile? or in total?

If it’s per projectile then I get into the right ball-park: Between 38280.34 to 42319.98 assuming 100% crit chance.

In the above example, Kelnis misses 1 crit resulting in a loss of 2502 damage ( lowering the floor to 35778.34 )

Looks like you crit 6 times out of 7 and landed all of your projectiles:

(4055 * 6) + (1553 * 1 ) + (1520 * 7) = 36523

which matches the damage bubble at least:

(2514 + 250 + 320 + 805 + (180 * 1.2)) = 4105

Crit Multiplier

( 1.5 + 0.96 + 0.15 ) = 2.61

Other Multipliers

( 1.1 * 1.2 * 1.1 * 1.1 * 1.1 * 1.05 * 1.05 ) = 1.94

Damage

( 1100 * 4105 * (2.8+0.15) / (2600) ) * 2.61 * 1.94 * 1.25 = 32427

Still somewhat short of the actual figure, and that’s with an ideal RNG.

I’ve tried all sorts of ridiculous sums to get it to match, like re-applying the multipliers on the total of each strike, or using a running total of the base damage on each strike before applying the bonus damage.

It’s possible the damage meter bubble is just plain incorrect for channelled skills ( I seem to remember it had inaccuracies in the betas ).

Either that or one of the modifiers isn’t working as intended, and has a larger multiplier than advertised

The log probably isn’t much help either, but might be worth some correlation

Also, Tarsius – torch 5 actual DPS is abysmal. Scepter Power doesn’t affect torch damage, either.

I know the DPS is bad, but the goal was to see big number, which you might do by the end of the channel ;-)
I stand corrected on the Scepter comment, for some reason I had forgotten that the damage bonus doesn’t apply to the offhand weapon

I will experiment with using maxed out rather than average weapon damage, also play with apply damage modifiers again on each strike to see if that’s what’s causing the inflated total damage

This is a funny thread because I was telling the dweebs in another thread that warrior DPS is nothing to get excited about, when they were bragging about their 40k HB numbers in a groups with 25 might and vuln going. As a guardian, you can basically do this:

1) Full zerker
2) Runes of the Scholar
3) 20/30/10/0/10 spec with greatsword
4) Have a warrior put banners and Empower Allies on you
5) Have a ranger put Frost Spirit and Spotter on you.
6) Have your team stack up 25 might and vuln and put fury on you
7) Use mob-specific sigil along with Curry Butternut Squash Soup and Undead Potion
8) Burst Smite > greatsword skills on a Risen Giant, watch as it does over 100k.

Hehe if only.

I guess that would be:
( 1047 * ( 3825 + 350 )* (2.8+0.15) / 1600 ) * ( 2.61 * ( 1 + 0.8 + 0.25 + 0.05 )) = 44173.82

or it hits 50k if multiplicative Method 3 is the correct one. Go test it Kelnis

Smite would do 75k of damage if they all hit/crit!

BTW isn’t torch #5 going to show bigger numbers than a GS? Especially if you take the 10% scepter power trait

I’m starting to think the GS coefficient is wrong and the mob defense is much higher, because those numbers just look too outlandish to be accurate.

Stacking aegis

While I think stacking Aegis would be too OP, I does annoy me that a single hit will cut through all of a guardian’s blocks in one strike.

For instance, if you have Aegis, Shield of Wrath and Protector’s Strike active, 1 strike will take a hit on all 3. Otherwise you could setup some nice burst if you could protect your shield before it detonates. You also lose out on potential Might on block, if you are traited that way.

Alternatively, if Aegis was to have a 1 second ( or even half a second ) block effect it would actually be a useful mechanic in zerg situations ( doesn’t just instantly get stripped away by AoE ), it becomes a useful counter to instagib thieves ( making them have to pause before unloading a full burst ) and giving some precious reaction time to evade or counter.

That was done, undoubtedly, with several of the projectiles hitting as well. It is fairly easy to WW “around” the mob to get additional hits.

Now, as far as the gw2build site, I updated the build/gear I tested with during the screenshot: Updated Build

You will want to add the info below to correct for warrior and his banner/party power/bloodlust stacks (and it doesn’t seem to have the newest traits/skill numbers, nor does perfect inscriptions seem to work, so I compensate for that here).

power: 696,
precision: 170,
critical damage: 15,

I’ll do a bit of testing to determine how many projectile attacks are hitting in addition to the regular eight. WTB Parsable combat log!

Lemme know if you guys need any more info, I’ll try to provide what I can. Busy day today, though, so I won’t be able to test until late tonight/early tomorrow.

Ah I forgot the crit from the warrior banner – I had put it on buildcraft, but forgot to transfer it into my forum post!

Thanks for the updated build. Looks like Akamon has broken gw2buildcraft again, so I’ll update the totals once I get access to it.

Update: Ok, updated 2 posts with revised modifiers based on your new build and some missing effects ( Warrior Banner crit 15% and forgotten Scholar Rune 10% bonus )

Method 2 with full WW effects and NPC armour of 1600 gives us 37194.44.

Still need to test the NPC to find the actual armour rating ( hopefully it’s not wildly out )

Yeah, I can’t vouch for my grey cells though any longer, so I might have made errors.

Also, we excluded the Whirling Wrath bolts for simplicity, but if you assume they all hit, they do add a couple of k to the final calculation – taking my last example:

Method 2 with Full Whirling Wrath Coefficient

Total Damage = ( 1047 * 3825 * (2.8+0.15) / 1600 ) * ( 2.61 * ( 1 + 0.7 + 0.23 ))=37194.44

And we are of course taking an average of weapon attack, so the actual result can be higher or lower depending on RNG.

Yup, I guess so.
I used to assume that % damage bonuses were just treated like an addition to the critical hit modifier, so method 1 would be my preferred take on things, but it falls far short on the actual damage numbers Kelnis is seeing at the end of the day.

lol, that there is some crazy damage.

Although I know a way to get more out of Shield of Wrath, it’s using one of those game mechanic “quirks” that I refuse to print in the forum bug list ;-)

I’ve always assumed multipliers were added together and then applied…until now.

Lets go through what effects are in play here in case we’re missing something. I’m going to assume 100% crit success.

( Bare with me, I’m not used to exercising my maths muscles, especially this early in the morning )

Power:

Power = 2514 ( gear/traits/food ) + 250 ( Bloodlust ) + 320 ( warrior Banner of Strength + Empower Allies ) + 525 ( 15xMight ) + 216 (Bane Signet + Perfect Inscriptions)

(2514 + 250 + 320 + 525 + (180 * 1.2)) = 3825

Critical Damage:

Crit Damage = 1.5 ( base crit ) + 0.96 ( gear/food ) + 0.15 ( warrior banner )

( 1.5 + 0.96 + 0.15 ) = 2.61

Positive Effect Modifiers:

Positive Modifiers = 0.1 (Scholar 6th Rune) + 0.2 ( Unscathed Contender ) + 0.1 ( Fiery Wrath ) + 0.1 ( Undead Food ) + 0.1 ( Radiant Power ) + 0.05 ( Greatsword Power ) + 0.05 ( Force )

Additive: ( 0.1 + 0.2 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.05 + 0.05 ) = 0.7
Multiplicative: ( 1.1 * 1.2 * 1.1 * 1.1 * 1.1 * 1.05 * 1.05 ) = 1.94

Negative Condition Modifiers:

Negative Modifiers = 0.23 ( Vulnerability )

I’m assuming vulnerability is treated the same as other modifiers and does not do anything interesting with opponent defense stats.

Direct Damage Formula

Damage = (avg weapon damage) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armour) * ( critical damage modifier + direct damage modifier )

Assuming:
Greatsword Coefficient = 2.8 ( again, ignoring the secondary projectiles )
Greatsword Avg Attack = 1047
NPC Armour = 2200

Method 1: Additive

Total Damage = ( 1047 * 3825 * 2.8 / 2200 ) * ( 2.61 + 0.7 + 0.23 ) = 18043.33

Method 2: Modifiers multiplied after crit

Total Damage = ( 1047 * 3825 * 2.8 / 2200 ) * ( 2.61 * ( 1 + 0.7 + 0.23 )) = 25675.05

Method 3: Fully Multiplicative

Total Damage = ( 1047 * 3825 * 2.8 / 2200 ) * 2.61 * ( 1.94 + 0.23 ) = 28867.80

Assuming one of those methods is correct, then the variable seems to be what the orrian giant’s armour rating is.

If it’s only 1600 then and using method 2 we get closer to the right number:

Method 2 with reduced NPC Armour

Total Damage = ( 1047 * 3825 * 2.8 / 1600 ) * ( 2.61 * ( 1 + 0.7 + 0.23 )) = 35303.19

Yeah the scepter change is very nice so far.

I have another alternative to RoW I do sometimes, ( although don’t do it if they have Aegis ):

You have just enough time to pre-cast Bane Signet before doing IJ. So even if they’ve spotted the big SoW telegraph, they’ll get knockdown + some good dmg and will be unable to evade the shield burst.

This is better for weapons that don’t already have the CC potential of the hammer though and obviously the main downside is you’re losing some power from Bane Passive effect in doing so, but it’s good against fleeing foes.

Smite condition I tend to reserve for when I actually do get conditions, since it’s effect is so much better in general. I really hope it gets the buffs hinted by Jon Sharp in the SoTG video, eg reduced cooldown or increased damage depending on the actual number of conditions you have.

Same goes for stacking on kill and here you cant benefit from having two different sigils even if they are in two different sets of weapons.

However you can put 2 of the same type on your 1 handed set, which will give you 2 stacks for every kill. I guess that’s handy if you are trying to charge up as quickly as possible.

Well if that link is still accurate, then no – the 9-10 second ICD of Battle will prevent the on-crit sigil from firing for the duration.

It’s a few months old, but I believe still valid.

Long store short though: Both effect on swap and effect on crit sigils share a global cooldown timer. The variance in behaviour between sigils is most likely down to the difference in internal cooldown duration between them ( some have 9 seconds, others as low as 1 second )

Although it doesn’t mention it directly, it does seem to imply Akamon is correct with running duel on-crit sigils giving 2 chances to proc once per crit

My guess it’s just a dps build using meditations and hammer.

Like precasting Ring of Warding into Judge’s Intervention. Then just having your way with that player. Don’t think it’s anything too special.

Probably something like 15/25/30/0/0

If he’s “one shotting” then it’s probably offhand Focus/Shield + Ray then switching to Hammer with Ring + Teleport, VoJ and Mighty Blow.

Pain Inverter used to be quite effective at giving a roaming build some breathing room ( or catching out an unsuspecting burst opponent ).

I haven’t slotted it since retaliation and confusion were nerfed though, and the lack of trait synergy is a real “pain”.

Perhaps the combo fields have more utility in this situation – poison and weakness procs could be very useful ( especially since the last patch ). But I doubt the damage will be high enough to justify it beyond any other kind of build ( although poison’s effect on healing is always welcome )

Mace

  • Protector’s Strike
    1. The blocking component will consume itself and other sources at the same time, like Aegis or Shield of Wrath stacks.
    2. The skill will fail to block any attack from enemies that were not previously aggressive towards the player, meaning that if you preemptively cast the skill, move into aggro range and the mob hits you, it will not block any attack.
  • Faithful Strike
    Only hits 1 enemy, despite indicating a target limit of 5, and the other 2 auto-attack chain skills cleaving up to 3 targets each. However it does heal up to 5 allies.

Utility Skills

  • Judge’s Intervention
    Teleporting towards the end of a fall from any height will allow the guardian to avoid all damage on impact ( provided there are targettable hostiles nearby ) – probably a feature!
  • Signet of Mercy
    1. The tooltip is ambiguous, should indicate it rallies downed players, not revives, as it does not revive a defeated player.
    2. Can fail to rally a downed player while poisoned with very low hp, user reported it brought him to 70% instead so maybe the poison cut the healing and it did not heal enough to rally?
  • Purging Flames
    Due to ground targetting, this skill is very hard to use effectively underwater.
  • "Retreat!"
    Cannot be activated whilst jumping or falling, like other shouts can despite having a 0 cast time.
    It can still be chained mid-channel with other skills.
  • "Save Yourselves!"
    PVP only: Is not listed in the hero panel build editor skills list ( but is still selectable in the utility slot bar ) – probably due to the pvp/pve boon duration skill split.
  • "Feel My Wrath!"
    Does not play the voice audio. ( available from the original Tome of Wrath #1 skill )

Elite Skills

  • Renewed Focus
    1. Sometimes it may start the animation and not offering any protection for the 3 seconds, if you move the spell will not go on cooldown and you can cast it again.
    2. Dodging while under the skill effects will often stop Virtues from being refreshed, and the Elite is forced into cooldown ( although invulnerability is unaffected ).

Other Issues

  • The boon Quickness continues to affect leap distance ( even after the 7/7 patch ) for skills like Leap of Faith and Mighty Blow. Approximately, the former will have the leap distance reduced from 600 to 460 and the latter from 300 to 240 ( about 20-25% shorter ).

Notes

  • Auto Attacks chains won’t start by themselves on enemies being hit by symbols, for example symbol of wrath without the player activating the auto attack chain by himself before the symbol is cast, is this intended or bug?, if the enemy is being auto attacked and then the aoe field is laid down the auto attacks will continue normally.

Virtues

  • Indomitable Courage
    Grandmaster III
    1. Swapping this trait in/out gives Virtue of Courage a new cooldown timer, allowing for double activation.
    2. Couragous Return will not reset Virtue of Courage when this trait is enabled ( because of the alternative timer )

Hammer

  • Symbol of Protection
    1. Has a tendency to form itself in the ground below or floating above the guardian in uneven terrain or areas with several layers like the Orr ship.
    2. If the target dies just before the third auto-attack lands, the symbol can be placed twice resulting in double tick damage and twice the amount of protection stacked.
  • Ring of Warding
    1. Enemies may exit the ring without stability if timing their jumps or dodges correctly.
    2. Cancels the knockdown animation from enemies affected by banish.

Staff

  • Orb of Light
    The orb may rarely get stuck in the terrain or more commonly in WvW fortress doors prompting you to detonate it.
  • Symbol of Swiftness
    Can fail to apply swiftness if a player runs through the symbol between ticks ( This is more likely if the player is already under the effect of swiftness ).
    Traiting Writ of Persistence for larger symbols can further alleviate this issue.
  • Line of Warding
    1. Enemies may pass through the line without stability if timing their jumps or dodges correctly.
    2. Cancels the knockdown animation from enemies affected by banish.

Sword

  • Sword Wave
    1. The third auto-attack chain often can miss structures or be obstructed by the terrain.
    2. Bizarrely, this is a piercing projectile attack which can also be reflected back at the caster.
    3. If the target dies before the third auto-attack lands, Sword Wave can repeat multiple times until it strikes another target or sometimes striking a target more than once.
  • Flashing Blade
    1. The teleport component may put you inside the terrain unable to move afterwards, may sometimes fail to teleport to a target that should be able to like on a ledge.
    2. Sometimes players will encounter a rubber-band effect after teleporting where they suddenly snap back to their original location.

Shield

  • Shield of Absorption
    1. Detonation can fail if attempted too quickly.
    2. The projectile absorption was broken in a patch and only lasts for 2 seconds instead of the stated 4.

Torch

  • Zealot’s Flame
    Does not apply 6 seconds of burning as described by tooltip:
    1. Very often applies just 3 seconds of burning
    2. Occasionally applies a second pulse of 6 seconds of burning after first 3 has expired ( totalling 9 )
  • Zealot’s Fire
    Frequently fails to hit a moving target at range, becoming “obstructed” even on relatively flat terrain.

Scepter

  • Orb of Wrath
    Enemies can make the bolts fly in crazy angles with small strafing movements.

Specialisation Traits

Zeal

  • Zealous Blade
    Master II
    When using the Greatsword skill Binding Blade the player does not receive any healing from either the initial blade strike or the subsequent tick damage. Players also don’t receive healing from the bolts cast from Whirling Wrath.

Radiance

  • Right-Hand Strength
    Adept II
    The 15% extra crit while using a 1 hander weapon is not reflected on the character panel. This is most likely due to the fact it only applies to your main-hand weapon, and isn’t a general stats boost.
  • Wrath of Justice
    Master I
    1. Does not activate immediately when using Greatsword skill Leap of Faith – however if you wait 2 seconds after triggering Virtue of Justice, the bind effect will work as expected
    2. Is not affected by Perfect Inscriptions (see below)

Valor

  • Stalwart Defender
    Master I
    Does not award +180 bonus toughness if you have no other active toughness passive bonuses. ( therefore it will never work in PVP, and only work in WvW/PvE if you have toughness awarded by food or WvW faction bonuses

Right, fair point on the trait investment.

I see that both the Ele and Engi have similar 1% minor traits in non-dps grandmaster tiers

Only the warrior gets 2% per-boon with 10 points invested in Tactics

10% condition duration from lyssa wont add an other tick of burning from activated or passive VoJ. At least not in Tpvp when i tried them out almost a year ago. If i remember correctly you need 25% conditionduration for active VoJ to tick once more. It might be changed and than i stand corrected.

Correct with 25%.

Pretty sure it is 1% – the confusion probably comes from the fact other classes have similar traits which award 2%.

I think this is because guardians can easily stack so many boons at once that a 2% per-boon would be overpowered.
