It still comes out to ‘just a grind’ for money/mats/pre. Nothing epic about obtaining one of these. There should be a quest line that gets you going/helps with crafting one of these.
And ppl wonder why there is so much botting. Although I have noticed some of the ‘usual’ bots are gone, so maybe Anet is finally stepping up and banning these ppl.
Theres a good chance you’ll see this so I’m going to say it.
Legendaries need to be less about money and more about an epic journey. An awesome difficult event or solo/group instance to obtain a precursor or gift would be alot more fun than what we got.
But it’s good to know you guys are listening and are planning to make changes.
Thank you!
Yep, exactly what I was (am still) hoping for. An epic quest/storyline along with being pricey (tho one would hope you could get some mats along the way).
Some people claim to have found a ‘niche’ item here & there. But generally, I use it for leveling. Once I’ve capped it at 400, I find it’s often cheaper to sell the mats and buy the finished item I want off the TP.
So in answer to your question, no, it’s not profitable, at least from my experience.
Yeah, there was another thread with the same complaint. The new interface sucks, but no response from Anet.
Yeah, I thought the same thing… since it was a green. Screwed over for sure. These things should have a level/item indicator.
Crafting, especially in a new game, is rarely profitable. There is way too much competition. All one needs to do is look at the TP and see how many people take a loss on an item compared to what they could have vendored it for.
You need to (1) enjoy crafting for itself and (2) look it as a leveling mechanic.
If you don’t enjoy (1) and/or (2), then you really should just sell your mats and buy your gear. It will most likely be cheaper.
Putting 40 exotic level 80 Staffs into the Mystic Forge and guess what happened?

Guess I was hoping the path to a legendary weapon would involve a quest line. Something epic. I’m ok with it needing expensive mats and all as well, but it almost seems like a gamble to get one.
Much like the OP, I have lousy luck w/ the MF, so I’m resigned to save up enough to buy a legendary someday. And if that never happens, eh, I’m still having fun.
However, that kinda takes the ‘epicness’ (is that a word, lol) out of acquiring a legendary.
Love the game, hate these gambling scenarios (like the most recent Halloween event, but that’s another thread). But that still leaves a lot of fun stuff to do, and one needs to do the stuff that makes you happy and leave the other to avoid frustration.
Yes, the Omnomberry Bar is discoverable. Nice buff, but it ain’t cheap.
Overall, I think the Halloween event was fun, but these chests are leaving a bad taste in a lot of ppl’s mouths.
The chests are a bad idea as it preys on weak ppl, or ppl who were mislead by what kind of chance they actually had. They are there solely to generate income and this poor attempt at another slight chance to ‘hit it big’ is just lame.
Bummer, but cheer up, there’s always next year!
Absolutely nothing. I figured it was going to be an abysmal drop rate, and other than skins, the stuff inside is pretty weak for what you pay, IMHO. I did open about 10 chests from keys that I had from drops. Got zip except for the junk.
Loved the event, but this whole gambling thing gives Anet bad rep points, even if (I’m sure) it’s very profitable for them. Preying on man’s weakness is never very pretty.
then they should make it solo.
Agreed. Who needs a bunch of people blocking/griefing, it’s hard enough as it is.
It’s too difficult. When you throw in the movement, that’s fine, but that acid comes up way too fast. Plus, you can’t restart it immediately, so you end up with a wait time.
Agree on the witch, but the Mad King looks pretty awesome too. Not into minis at all.
In a game where they need to fix quite a few things, this was NOT one of them. The old UI was fine. Why fix what ain’t broke?!
It’s worth if (1) you enjoy it, and (2) you will get a leveling boost. Once you hit 80, nope, not from a monetary standpoint.
I believe both are a (rare) drop. Trading post if you gotta have one.
Ignoring the gambling aspect, this whole chest thing will continue to give Anet a black eye as long as they are in game. Before the event, they were pretty much junk, and after this correction, they are still pretty much junk. However, they won’t eliminate these as they will take advantage of the weak to make money (eh-hem, not me).
You can call the people complaining whiners, cryers, or whatever, but they are a voice, and if loud enough, will surely be heard throughout the gaming community.
Just gonna hurt Anet’s rep on an otherwise very enjoyable game.
Well, a posting of some basic info (on their website, not twitter, facebook, etc) would be nice. For example, the way the event is segmented is fine, but if you go to the site, they don’t ‘unlock’ the small blurb until it goes live. The Act 1 blurb really didn’t give out much, but would have been a nice thing to open just before going live.
It seems the norm for MMO’s to not give out info so as to not ‘spoil it’, yet within hours you can hunt down the info at various sites.
I thought the whole chest thing was a money grab before this event. Other than some nice salvage kits, nothing else was of any use to me (never spent a dime, only used dropped keys). I think the reason it stings so much more now is the ‘skin’ enticement and lack of communication on the odds. It’s one thing to make something difficult to obtain, quite another to make it extremely expensive in real money. So instead of spending money on keys, I went and bought the witch outfit and am happy with that. I know that doesn’t help with the weapon skins (which do look really nice), but I’m writing that off as a money grab I chose not to participate in.
This whole “Anet is looking into it” thing… well, I’m not hopeful. Any one with half a brain could see this coming, and Anet has a lot of brains, so I figure someone knew.
That isn’t to put down the game at all. I really enjoy it a lot. It’s just that things like this can really hurt a rep.
Level 80s, Haunted Door Campings, Lower-level farming, and problems with level scaling
Posted by: Vegas.5790
Yeah, don’t understand why the lower level areas have more doors. Except for Orr that is. Kinda asking for a problem where none should exist. But I guess that it is a learning experience for Anet as well.
I got the witch costume, looks awesome. You can use it outside of town, but you only have certain abilities, none of which work against mobs.
Wanna know something ironic?
I lost 30 bucks. You can see me throughout the first 10 pages of this thread putting in my two cents about it.
So I farmed candy corn. For hours.
Guess what.
I’m now the proud owner of the ghastly grinning shield.
:)
If I might ask… how does farming candy corn get you a shield? Just a drop?
Just under 700MB for me.
My d/l went pretty quick to 72%, now getting slowdown and connection errors. But it does reconnect.
Mmmmm… don’t remember the scale ‘up’ comment, thought it was just a scale downward, even for the event. Could be wrong on that… where’s the notes?
Another post by a dev mentioned that all levels will have some content, so fun for all!
I can confirm 30% and about 366MB.
At least. The high drop rate is to incentive you to get more keys.
Ah, I never had high d/l speeds with WoW. P2P ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. Plus, if you’re bandwidth capped, it can actually cost you.
Oh man, they will be as people open them. They were around 26c last I saw & will go higher I bet.
Yeah, it most certainly is.
Yeah, just getting hammered. Should smooth out in a 1/2 hour or so (hopefully!)
Yeah, I had 3 in a row once. With 12, you should have played the lotto that day!
Just a little tip for the future. If your game doesn’t d/l and install an update prior to ANY event, don’t expect stuff from the event to be available. Common sense really.
If the stuff isn’t available ingame yet then don’t have it advertised on the ingame gem store!.
Common sense really.

Works both ways
Except my version of common sense leads to caution. Yours leads to loss because you saw a shiny (i.e., not common sense). So it doesn’t work exactly the same way.
On you again bud. This is a relatively new game, there will be issues, player beware. But yeah, look around for some halloween decorations if in doubt (and you should always be).
Here’s another money saving tip… when the Christmas event comes along, make sure you see Christmas decorations before doing anything, ah… ‘Christmasy’.
Oh man, you opened the troll door. BTW, technically, not F2P, but B2P (buy to play). Others have stated the ‘free content’ was a given and they paid for it, yadda, yadda….
They are a rare drop/reward. Don’t look for that to change, Anet is trying to make $$$ off this event.
Don’t look for weapons/armor to be account wide. Even the free horns, I’m sure you’ll have to log in with each toon and claim it (just like the baseball cap at launch).
Just a little tip for the future. If your game doesn’t d/l and install an update prior to ANY event, don’t expect stuff from the event to be available. Common sense really.
Seriously? You opened them before your game patched? That’s on you bud.
Very poor communication – the email blast shouldnt have gone out till it was live. It should have been stated that it wouldnt go live EST/EU on the 22nd.You should have said the 23 and there wouldnt have been an issue. I dont have an interest in the event but crystal clear time would have alleviated a lot of issues.
I would have preferred a working Orr myself.
Except, y’know, **** happens. People would have complained about not being advised until the last minute if they went with your suggestion. And since you don’t have an interest, why don’t you go play in Orr and not post in the Halloween threads? Unless… of course… unless you really DO have an interest.
Can people stop telling Anet to use GMT? Its a game made by a NA developer, operating out of the west coast in Pacific time, and will use pacific time. Why should Americans have to figure out what GMT equals in their time zone?
Why should the rest of the world have to figure out PDT? GMT is the international standard, not PDT. The international standard doesn’t change based on “where you operate”.
They said they tried to use GMT and people were STILL confused and still felt the entitlement to have Arenanet to convert it for them. If you can’t google “What time is it in Los Angeles California” or “What time is it in Seattle Washington” then you have some serious problems.
Exactly. It’s easy enough to find out PDT (or any other time zone). The entitlement of people to have everything their way is disgusting.
Do you who get the bonuses always see a ‘pop up’ when you hover over the WvW icon? Is that the best way to tell if bonuses are in effect? ‘Cause if that’s the case, I never see it and I have never changed servers.
Botters are paying customers like everyone else. Actually they’re better, they tend to buy more accounts. Explains why they wait so long to ban, they need to make sure the botters profit before banning them and repeating the cycle.
Many of them are hackers, not paying customers. Why people deal with them to save a few bucks is beyond me.
It’s more the frustration factor I think. Bots are everywhere, they get reported, and the same bots are there the next day (and the next, and the next, etc). It feels like a waste of time to report them, and Anet only responds with a ’we’re working on it.
I hesitate to say ‘all’, but most games I’ve seen do not have an option to change gamma while in windowed mode. I believe this is a restriction imposed by Windows itself.
I wish Anet would simply do what they promised & ban the bot accounts. I’ve reported the same guy 3 days and it’s still running constantly. Today, in the same area (Frostgorge Sound… between Frostwalk Tundra and Despond Precipice on Dragonbrand server) there was an army of bots. Must have been 15 to 20 bots, just doing a loop killing grawl. It’s ridiculous that this is allowed.
Yeah, I don’t understand why they don’t have an automatic kick after so many reports (at least until they can review them). I know they don’t want to ban people who don’t deserve it, but if 20 or more people report someone as a bot, you can bet they are.
