@Phaeris, a necromancer has absolutely no problem with a guardian. Everything a guardian can do a necromancer can counter. A necromancer is paper to a guardians rock. As for mesmers I find them easy to take down on elementalist, since everything a ele does D/D is AoE so the clones don’t really provide any benefit nor last long enough to explode. I believe a mesmer is a warriors paper, but they can be overcome with skill. Use the Ctrl T targeting trick, it greatly helps.
@Auria: Perhaps there are more than one class I’m not sure if I want to play or not. I’m not asking anyone to ‘deside’ for me, I’m asking them to motivate me. If you don’t want to do that then please don’t post in this thread. There are plenty others.
@Ninja: I’ve done that, but nothing is really sticking for me. Perhaps if I see what motivates other people to stick with their class I’ll get motivated as well.
Elementalist are far from the worst class in 1v1 situations. Just because you haven’t fought against any skilled elementalist doesn’t mean they are bad. 1v1 is where my elementalist shines.
I don’t intend to troll but have you ever thought its you that’s the problem and not the class? I’ve seen warriors wreck people and I’ve seen warriors get wrecked. Every class is a rock paper scissors to another class, but for the most part sPvp is very even. Warriors don’t require as much skill to play compared to other classes to be successful so it often leaves the player feeling lazy and not reacting to certain abilities the way he/she should. A good way to increase your skill with warrior is to learn every other classes abilities and behavior patterns. A mesmer creates clones, yes, but did you know if you ctrl + T over the real mesmer its extremely easy to differentiate the mesmer from his clones? A engineer has so many answers to so many situations but did you know they are weaker from a distance than point blank? A rifle warrior can take on a rifle engineer 1v1. A thief has a very powerful burst but did you know they have to be behind you to get the real burst? Back rolling when a thief stealths really hurts them.
Hey there! I currently have a 80 elementalist, 61 Mesmer, 24 Necromancer and 26 Engineer and I am not really happy with any of them. I wanted to start a new class. I’ve dabbled with everything but warrior in sPvp and nothing really sticks. I don’t really know what I want to do, ie ranged combat, melee, tanking, roleplaying, casting, pve, pvp, wvw but I’m currently stuck with guild wars as my only gaming outlet at the moment. I’m highly unmotivated to create another class after the long dredge of getting elementalist to 80 and I’m extremely fickle when it comes to picking which class. I was wondering if you ranger enthusiasts could motivate me to create a ranger with success stories, videos, screenshots of armor, experiences or anything that really makes ranger stand out. Please keep any negativity and unhelpful replies out of this topic. Thanks!
I’d have to say a Engineer or a Ranger. Engineer for the amazing support it offers and AoE damage. A warrior can pile up the monsters and a engineer can AoE slay them. Ranger for the spirits bonuses and ranged damage.
Kits are far superior to weapon swapping and it shouldn’t take a genius to see so. A weapon swap offers one thing, a sigil. It also has a cooldown. Not only do you get buffs from changing kits, which is like a sigil and similar to attunement changing but you also have no cooldown! You can pop the strongest skills in each kit and truly never have to auto attack. Having 24 more skills than any other class is far superior to “Activating a sigil”
What sigil would you even put on there?
100% Crit chance? Well Fury on each kit swap seems better in my opinion.
2-3 Stacks of Might? Switch to Flamethrower, drop a firewall and combo off it.
Poison on next attack? Use pistol or drop a poison grenade.
50% more endurance? Use Acid Bomb on Elixir Gun, its the same as a dodge.
Bleed nearby foes? Shrapnel Grenade.
Freeze nearby foes? Can’t really replicate this but we have enough CC through the kits to make up for it, blinds, knockbacks, chills, cripple.
Hey look at that, by using kits we have all the sigils all the time and then some! Nerf kits. Give em a 40 minute cooldown.
Zomg you can’t have it all, get it through your head. You aren’t nor will you ever be the God class of GW2. The cost of having 24 more skills than any other class is its not weapon swapping. Stop crying for the sake of crying. If you don’t like the mechanic play a class with weapon swapping. Engineers and elementalists not having weapon swap is completely justified
I swear people will complain about anything. A engineer can have 34 active skills all at once and they are still complaining they can’t switch weapons. Absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah 100 posts saying elementalist is underpowered to poor players and the whole class needs reworked and there are hundreds of bugs and QQ QQ QQ QQ is really benefiting anyone. At least in dictator mode this forum would be more interesting.
I recommend going D/D or S/D.
If you go D/D build Vitality -> Toughness -> Power. or Vitality -> Power -> Crit Dmg.
I highly recommend 30 points in water and 20 in Arcane. Speccing this way makes you a tank but you do not lose that much damage. Survival is infintiely more important than damage output for elementalist.
If you go S/D go for toughness → Condition damage → Vitality

Honestly the only patch they need is not for the game, but the forums. They need to patch the rules and make it against the rules to moan and complain when the class isn’t exactly the way you want it and only accept positive feedback and useful posts.

There is something wrong with asking the community and I can’t believe I’m the only one who sees it. He’s becoming completely reliant on people for help.
Elementals from Elementalist still attack when they are downed, but they need to. Elementalist downed skills are just absolutely horrible. Considering a Engineer can have like 8 turrets out at once, all more useful than a necromancers pet I think its proper the turrets get destroyed. Oh and mesmers can summon additional illusions while they are downed, so it would be too complicated and probably glitchy to make the current ones go away and the ones summoned when downed stay alive. The illusions only hit for 0 anyway. The phantasms on the other hand I can’t remember if they go away or not when I’m downed.
a rank 1 guy posts that engineer is amazing in spvp, very nice joke. you know what is amazing? my thief with quickness in spvp, that kills any 20khp and 1,8 toughness build out of stealth in under a second, you are dead before my stealth reappear animation ends thus you dont even see what is hitting you =D
The moment you come onto me like that my explosive trait kicks in. Drops a smoke bomb when stunned. After that I have plenty other possibilities to make you miss. Flamethrower smoke, bomb smoke, dodge, dodge, elixir R to refill endurance and break stun, dodge, dodge. An engi that lets you rip him up like that is either afk or doesn´t know his class all too well.
The moment your explosive trait kicks in I pull out my vorpal greatsword of dragon slaying and dispelling + 5 and chop your head off. My point is everything sounds good on paper. Hybrid classes like Engineer and Elementalist have answers to every situation. On paper a engineer and elementalist will always win. On the field there are so many other factors; reaction time, cooldown, landscape, skill, lag, luck, chuck norris factor, gear, anxiety, coordination, glitches.
Well both my mesmer and elementalist can solo champions. My mesmer has clones and feedback for ranged champions while my elementalist just has enough healing to take the hits from ranged champions. Of course there are a few champions who are just too ridiculous to solo, namely giant stone things.
I see, thanks for the detailed reply. So it is better to spec into a glass cannon than a tank for AoE grinding? How do you fare against the ranged monster that always magically appears when you pull a large group of monsters? Are you capable of soloing champions? How about a stray veteran in a group of monsters AoE?

Yea no.. I think not. There are better out there. And almost 0 different styles og builds. This is one of the major things wrong with the engineer.

I’m currently just looking for advice on leveling. Once I reach a respectable level I should be able to determine on my own what’s needed for spvp, wvwvw and pve. Reading the builds on the “Post your Build” section is not very helpful when it comes to leveling because once you hit 80 things change and they are mostly all 80 only builds.
When I was leveling elementalist I found it best to stack only toughness and condition damage with all my points into earth and arcane. After 60 I found that to no longer be as effective because things no longer got one shotted by Churning Earth. When I hit 70 I completly changed my weapons and build and I couldn’t be happier but I’m certain my current build would be horrid pre-60-70.
What stats work well with leveling? Is it better to go glass cannon and single target or go tanky and aoe grind?
What early point location and traits make a big difference?
I remember grabbing Signet of Illusions and the bouncing trait in illusions for my Mesmer made the difference in leveling from night and day. It went from tedious to mindlessly easy. Is there a similar thing for Engineers?

Yes we do have a very high survivability when you spec into that however that doesn’t help any if you can’t do the damage. All you are then is just an annoying Ele that just doesn’t die right away.
Are you honestly saying you just cant kill people in sPvp? How do you think a guardian does it? Their dps is lower than ours even if we go tanky but they are persistant. Other classes can’t heal as effectively as a elementalist can so we outlast them. Apply your burns, your bleeds, your constant poking and he will fall before you. Not every fight is three seconds long nor should any fight ever be three seconds long but there isn’t anyone I can’t kill. Especially with burning. Burning reduces their healing by 50%. All those classes that only have one skill that heals them get destroyed. Especially thief. Fire 5 spikes for a lot of damage if it crits. I assure you I’ve never ran into someone I couldn’t kill because my damage wasn’t enough to beat their healing cooldowns. Not to mention the fact that they CANT run away from a D/D Ele. We have three charges, a root, two slows, two breath attacks, two knockdowns and other things that make escaping impossible.
Instead you want to play a glass cannon that never dies?
I don’t understand your reasoning. People want to play a caster but complain they die when things get within melee range. People want to play a glass cannon but complain they die a lot. Maybe elementalist isn’t a caster. Maybe elementalist isn’t a glass cannon. Have you ever thought of that? You may want to play a glass cannon guardian, but I’m sorry the guardian is just not a glass cannon class. You may want to play a ranged damage thief, but I’m sorry the thief is just not a ranged damage class. Maybe they never designed the elementalist to be a glass cannon caster but instead a hybrid class that requires hybrid stats. Thats exactly how I play it and it works fantastic, both S/D and D/D. I don’t like Staff or Focus so I can’t comment on those. Just because the class doesn’t work the way YOU envisioned it doesn’t mean its broken.
Hey there. I hit 80 on my Elementalist and I love the class. I feel very powerful in sPvp, WvWvW and PvE. I suppose that makes me a above average player because everyone complains how horrible Elementalist is. Anyway, my little research has shown me Engineer is similar to Elementalist and I’d like to give it a try. I’m curious on what you experienced Engineers recommend for leveling. What would you put points in first? What kind of builds would you run? What kind of stats would you go for?
I like the idea of pistols a lot more than rifles but from my experience as a elementalist using conditions to kill things is just plain slower than power. I don’t have extensive knowledge on the kits but I’ve done a little research. From my experience as a elementalist building pure tank and AoE grinding things for tasks was much faster than single target killing. Is the same true for engineer? What kits do you recommend for leveling and why?
I’d appreciate any advice from stats to builds to talent points to utility skills and just plain old tips. I just ask that you please provide reasoning behind your advice as well. Saying Xx is better doesn’t really help me out much at all. Thanks!
Pretty much there are only three or four different styles from like 1-79 for each armor class type for the exception of race specific and such. When you hit 80 you unlock many different armor types. You can right click a item and click preview to see what it looks like. I’m pretty certain that only works after its crafted. Another method would be to google the item name of what you want to craft and I’m sure somewhere online they will have a picture of it. GW2 Wiki has several pictures up but the list is far from complete.

Wizards I have no seen yet but I’m sure its also on the GW2 wiki page. The only reason to max out crafting is for legendary weapons. They require 2-3 months just to get one and each legendary weapon requires TWO professions to be at 400.
While we wont top the dps charts I think we more than make up for it in survivability. It is sooo difficult to down my elementalist in spvp. The enemy really has to work for it and I put out just enough damage where if they don’t try to take me down then they will pay. I run Dolyaks and 0/10/10/30/20. The amount of healing and condition removal I have is ridiculous. I use Armor of Earth, Lightning Flash and Mist form. I use the traits that give me armor of earth at 50% and arcane shield at 25%. If they somehow manage to get me low and all my heals and elemental is on cooldown I can easily switch to lightning attunment 5, and 4 away or even switch to fire and 3 away until my cooldowns refresh. I almost feel overpowered as it is in pvp. Maybe I just vs really poor players.
I wouldn’t recommend them in dungeons either. They will die almost instantly in dungeons. Its really only viable for leveling.
Its a combination of two different sets, one is Arah (be sure to click the second armor tab on the left to see the exotic stuff) and the other is the molten set right near arah.
I love our elites. Each has a set purpose. Glyph of Elemental summoning is amazing. I always use it in water attunement. That ice elemental is like God mode while he’s alive. He heals and chills enemies. He can take a beating as well. Firey greatsword is good if you duo with a guardian in pvp. It’s also good if you go S/D and you have a task where you have to destroy objects. It destroys objects much faster than S/D skills. Tornado is god awful on land but underwater its AMAZING. It does like 80k damage underwater. Even at 80 I try to pull as many guys as I can and use it to kill them all.
Asura elites are horrible. I am also a Asura. The power suit makes me cry. The offensive golem hits less than our lesser earth golem and the defensive golem just doesnt last long enough to make it worth a elite.
As a D/D in pvp I generally use Arcane Shield, Armor of Earth and Lightning Flash. The more survivability I have the longer I get to beat up people. Works very well for me. I use both the defensive traits that give Armor of Earth at 50% and Arcane shield at 25%. I’m a hard clothy to take down haha.
Ugh the mentality of these forums is terrible, if you aren’t talking about how horrible the class is you have no place on these forums.
I really don’t think it would take that much time to implement a program like this. Not everyone on the Anet team is devoted to fixing bugs. I’m sure they have a department for improvement and a department for correction. Maybe they could give other classes a similar mechanic, like when Engineers switch kits they have the OPTION to change colors with it.
There’s nothing wrong with elementalist besides a few glitches. People are just babies or are too stubborn to try gearing differently or gearing at all. I don’t consider myself the best player but I’ve taken a elementalist to 80 with zero problems PvE for the exception of the first 12 or so levels it took me to learn the class. In dungeons I play a vital support role without sacrificing too much damage. In PvP I feel extremely powerful. The mobility and damage D/D offers is ridiculous. I run circles around other classes. I build like a tank so I can stall 4-5 people charging one point long enough for backup to arrive. I’ve even managed to win 2v1 and 3v1. I’ve never gone down without making my opponent work for his/her kill. Even though I’m spec’d tank I don’t feel like my damage is low at all. I have a crazy amount of heals as well to keep me going even when my health reaches critical. In WvW I perform just fine with my wide array of AoE.
I don’t understand why everyone complains how poorly elementalist functions underwater. I find them to be immensly powerful. Whirlpool/Tornado does INSANE damage. I usually pull like 4-5 monsters, cast armor of earth and arcane shield, switch to water attunement for regeneration and transform. It will kill them all. When its on cooldown switching between attunements like you do on land does a lot of damage. Start in water, hit them with 2, 3 and 5 if you are positioned. Switch to fire, drop 2 and 5. Switch to earth, drop the bleeds and anchor. Switch to lightning and finish them at point blank range. I’ve never had troubles in water, except against those ridiculous champion mega-jaws things, but theres a way around fighting them head on that I wont discuss on this forum.
I think it would be a neat idea to be able to set dye colors based on which attunement you are in. This would have no benefit besides cosmetic, but it would be fun for roleplaying.
That’s what I don’t understand. I’m at the auction and I’m looking up Dolyak’s armor and the only piece available is Vit, Power and Condition. Is Dolyak a rune as well?

Sorry no. I don’t make videos. If Churning Earth alone doesn’t kill every monster around you within 2-3 seconds then either you are doing something entirely wrong or you are just fighting way too strong of monsters.

@Drax, those are tips for not experienced players that want to be told how to play the game. Sadly that is now the majority of gaming community. I came to those conclusions on my own simply because I love Churning Earth but the exact same effect can be reached with staff and you dont need lightning flash for staff. You dont really need anything. I’m sure you can do equally as well with a scepter in the off hand, it just doesn’t appeal to me so I don’t write about it. You don’t have to do anything. You can play however you like and it can be just as effective as my build as long as you have the skill to back it up. The truth of the matter is, this generation of gamers DOESNT have the skill the back their preferred playstyle up so they complain until they no longer need it.
