I think Churning Earth is a pretty big noob killing ability.
I’m not sure what kind of matches you are in but when my opponent makes a mistake I’m sure to exploit it and one mistake can just as easily cost my opponent the match as it would me. Of course if a guardian makes a mistake it doesn’t matter, but that’s expected for a tanking class. If a thief or mesmer makes a mistake I assure you I’m going to win. The reward being I just took down the top dog as a underdog. That’s generally reward enough for me, especially if I get it on video and ESPECIALLY if they QQ.

I use greatsword for destroying objects. It can take them down quickly and Sc/D cannot.
I also give greatsword to guardians so they are more successful at pvp.
I find the frost bow fun but I never actually use it outside of entertainment.
I hear you can build around thor’s hammer to have a successful pve build. I’ve never tried it as I don’t want to be a make-shift warrior.
I completely forgot what the shield does. Probably something projectile-reflecting.

If a elementalist was given access to all those weapons do you realize how many skills a elementalist would have at their disposal compared to every other class? How is that fair? We already have tons, I’m not sure if we have more than engineer but we definitely have a lot.
D/D – 20
Sc/F – 20
St – 20
Tri – 20
We have 80 skills on just weapons to choose from! If we were given all the conjured weapons as weapons that would add 80 more skills! That would be insane.

MMOs have really gone down hill over the years. I really miss the monster grinding over quest grinding. FFXI was one of the best MMOs I’ve ever played because it required actual skill to reach a high level. You were required to know your class by the time you reached 75. You were punished for failing by losing experience. It took a very long time to reach the max level and forced communitive play building relationships better than any MMO I’ve ever played. Every game since then has been such a dumbed down version of a MMO it’s getting more and more insulting. Warhammer was a copy of WoW. Easykittenmode classes. Rift was a copy of Warhammer. Age of Conan had unique traits but requires zero skill to play. WoW 2.0 is a childs game. Diablo 3 made me cry when it was decently challenging then they dumbed down the game for kids within 3 months of release. Now any sign of challenge they can’t quickly overcome and people result to crying until they get them to make it easier for them. There is no desire to improve in video games anymore. Everyone just wants to be handed the shiny weapon as long as no one else can have it.

Amnon, sometimes just playing a class is not a sufficient amount of fun. We are humans. Its human nature to want more. There is no avoiding it. As soon as you have what you wanted you will want something more. We are more in love with desire than the desired. Yes elementalist is fun for me, but I am a elitest. I will not be happy until I’m the best. Fortunately this is a untainable goal so it keeps me preoccupied. Do not mistake me for this little babies crying the class is broken. I’m personally happy making the underdog the best and calling these people out for being poor players.

From my experience this class just requires a lot of experience to be successful. It’s not bad in any sense of the word. It has no more or less glitches than any other class, except necromancer, poor poor necromancer. It requires you to know your opponent. You must have the foresight to predict what your opponent is going to do based on his weapon. Then you must have quick reaction, especially if you are playing D/D. Then you better have all 20 of those skills absolutely memorized to the core. You need to know exactly what combo of buttons to push each scenario. After you reach that level I find elementalist to be extremely powerful in pvp, especially 1v1.

You have to play very good to have a chance versus a mediocore Mesmer… and of course you have to play very good versus another very good Mesmer as well.
I’d say Mesmer got the advantage in that fight… but it’s not impossible to defeat a Mesmer and Elementalist does better at killing Mesmers than most other classes do.
But well… Mesmer is by design the strongest 1v1 class.

I blame that entirely on Moa bird haha.

One thing I forgot to mention is a mesmer has a pretty decent chance of winning a 3v1. A d/d elementalist, at least one of my skill level can do no better than buy time from a 3v1. I’ve won 2v1 but either because I outgear or outskill my enemies.
Another important thing to note is mesmer is the flavor of the month so the chances of seeing a poorly skilled mesmer are much greater than seeing one who knows what hes doing.

The outcome of a mesmer vs elementalist duel will be entirely skill based. A elementalist needs to know how to find the mesmer out of the clones. He needs to have quick access to condition removing abilities and know when to pop his cooldowns to counter the mesmer. Mesmers are more predicable than elementalists so a elementalist has a slight edge. If there are three clones out you can expect them to come exploding in your face in a second, so it might be who of you to get protection up. If you are turned into a moa bird you better break line of sight for as long as you can. If chaos storm hits the field you better break line of sight. If they switch to great sword close the gap asap and start pounding keeping to his back to avoid the knockback. If hes in staff try to keep your distance. If you are too close the projectiles fire faster and your conditions will build up quickly. Its entirely skill based.

In team oriented pvp having a single elementalist on your team is paramount. A thief is very powerful but a thiefs ability caps quickly. A thief wont really do anything unexpected. They will stealth, appear and spike damage you then disappear. If you prepare for it or react fast enough they aren’t hard to stop.
Elementalist and Mesmer go pretty hand to hand.
A mesmer’s chaos storm is extremely effective in organized pvp, while so is a elementalists churning earth. A elementalist can cure conditions and apply boons on his allies much more effective than anyone but engineer. Elementalists also move faster than any other class with ride the lightning which can result in some early points.
It’s really hard to compare two classes. On a pvp team you will want both a mesmer and elementalist but not two of each. The more versatile your team is the more effective it will be. Both elementalist and mesmer can hold points by themselves more effective than other classes. Remember you are playing a game of rock paper scissors. A thief will kill a elementalist easier than it will kill a mesmer but a elementalist can kill a guardian easier than a mesmer can.
Just remember a mesmer has faster easier access to answers than a elementalist. When a thief jumps you a elementalist has to pop a cantrip, switch attunements, knock him down, roll away, blind him, charge him, knock him down, switch attunements, burn him. All a mesmer has to do is drop chaos storm. Chaos storm is a answer to so many problems its ridiculous.

You should also know how class forums work. Everyone is negative. If you aren’t negative then you don’t belong on the forums. Look at the mesmer forums at the moment. They have absolutely NOTHING to complain about. They have maybe 2-3 bugs for the entire class. The excel in every aspect of the game and yet they STILL complain on the forum. Its mind boggling. The only class who should be complaining is necromancer and thats ONLY because of the over 100 bugs they currently have. I’m not even exagerating with that number. It’s a well balanced game, about as balanced as a game can be. I’ve seen engineers take down 1v2s against classes they are outmatched against. I’ve seen rangers take down guardians. Elementalists take down everyone. Ive seen warriors take down guardians. Skill plays a larger role in this game than most.

@Dire, you score the highest in spvp? no way! You must be a pro at capturing points and finishing downed players…..
You finish dungeons without wipes? That must be entirely your doing and not anyone else in the party!
Yet you somehow got 2 shot by normal monsters and spent a long time kiting? Something about this story just doesn’t add up.
Is this your first time playing a hybrid class? We will never reach top damage. We will never have top support. We will never be the top tank. We will never shoot the furthest, run the fastest, eat the most pies, burp the loudest, guess the correct number of cookies in the cookie jar but we will always have the most amount of answers to any given situation. Its all about reaction time and keyboard mouse coordination. Just because your elementalist experience was bad doesn’t mean the elementalist is a bad class. I’ve said this over six times, mesmer does everything better but that doesn’t make elementalist bad at all. Elementalist can do things a mesmer cannot. Believe it or not but not everyone is as good a player as they think. My elementalist experience was great. The first twenty levels sucked because I hadn’t figured out the class but the next 60 were easy street. The first several hours of pvp were awful but now Im confident enough in my class to not back down from any 1v1. Do i always win? No, but i always put up a fight to remember.

If I had to guess necromancer will eventually be the top dogs of pvp. They have so much potential right now but they have over 100 bugs and glitches that just ruin the class.
I will say honestly that a Mesmer is just better in everway but as you saw in those videos a elementalist CAN be a threat. I prefer S/D over D/D because D/D is a balls to the wall approach. You risk everything being at close range and have to build less survivability to make the damage worth the risk. S/D allows more of a tanky build and has more strategy involved imo. I switch it up every now and then. You wont need to bind 20 different keys. It will always be 1-5 that changes based on which attunement your in.
You can switch servers for free every 24 hours. As long as you are in a medium population server I don’t mind switching to it. I usually have to switch servers anyway for map completion to get around glitches.

Warrior, Guardian and Ranger are not the top dogs of sPvp :P
Mesmers, Thiefs and Guardians outshine everyone. Mesmers being the obvious top dogs. I personally don’t even consider Rangers a threat on any class. Ever. Engineers are more of a threat than rangers simply because if anyone is gutsy enough to play a engineer in pvp then they probably know how to play the class.

Dungeons in this game aren’t really as "End Game’ as you would expect. Pretty much any random assortment of classes can complete a dungeon as long as the players are half competent at their own class. Sometimes that’s asking too much, yes, but for the most part it really doesn’t matter who you bring along.
Elementalist offers one thing no one else is willing to do. Support. They can create a insane amount of fields for boons and offer massive AoE healing. Not only can they support but they can do acceptable AoE damage while supporting. Dungeons in my opinion run so much smoother when you have at least one elementalist in the party. More than one hinders the party. I recommend bringing a staff into a dungeon.

Glass cannon in my opinion is not a option for a elementalist. We aren’t a dps type class. We are hybrid. The more you accept that the easier your elementalist career will be. Hell, the tankier you build leveling the easier it is.

From having capped both Mesmer and Elementalist I can honestly say Mesmer is just flat out better in every way. They offer the same support in dungeons by providing boons and conditions with Chaos Storm and they can dish out WAY more damage with Phantasms. They are superior in pvp because it just comes naturally to them. They have easier accessed answers to different situations. They can build glass cannons and with the ridiculously awesome abilities they have they can still take a beating. Its more difficult to take down a ‘Downed’ mesmer than it is a living mesmer.

Oh I assure you that elementalist is so much more rewarding than a mesmer. mesmer is the flavor of the month. If a Mesmer kills someone everyones like meh, saw it coming. If a elementalist kills someone everyones shocked and thinks the elementalist is a extremely skilled player. The reason its hard to play is because the average class has 10 skills they switch between and 4 utility/elite. The elementalists has 20 and you have to be extremely familiar with all 20 and use them all actively to be successful. Each one is a answer to a different situation. You need to switch to the right attunement at the right time and press and the right skill.

I will say Mesmer is just flat out better than a elementalist in every aspect of the game but a elementalist thats skilled can take down the flavor of the month Mesmers. Elementalist is not a bad class. It just requires more work, faster reaction, more clicking for effectively the same results but in my opinion the same results are more rewarding.

The post above my is from someone who is not a very good elementalist and dont let him discourage you. Hes likely trying to play a caster. We are a battle mage. I recommend reading this : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/PvE-Pro-Tips/first#post240845

A2
I use Alt + 1,2,3,4 for attunement changing. I’ve always used Alt 1,2,3,4 for something in any MMO so it was awkward not using them.

In pve I find elementalist to be just fine. We wont hit the top dps numbers but then again we aren’t a straight out dps class like thief. When it comes to leveling I find it super easy. If you build balanced or even tanky you can easily AoE wipe an entire area of monsters. When it comes to dungeons we have incredible support capability and versatility. We give a group exactly what it needs. No one wants to play a support in dungeons. Everyone specs glass cannon. Someone has to setup combos, boons and healing without sacrificing too much damage output. Lucky for them Elementalist can do just that. We should also be the last class to fall if played right.

When it comes to pvp I think we are also fine. We have three builds that work well in different pvp situations. WvWvW is obviously staff aoe build. It does wonders at a safe distance. sPvp you can either go D/D for fast paced clicking of death or S/D for massive condition damage while still being tanky. We have answers to every situation, the only question is can you act fast enough to answer a question when it pops up?

Taci, I recommend reading my Ele pro-tips forum on the main page. If you feel like a glass cannon then its probably because you are building like a glass cannon. Don’t compare Ele 2.0 to Ele 1.0 in guild wars 1. This is a hybrid class and as a hybrid class it requires hybrid stats. Read that post and create a build from that.

I didn’t read all the posts so if this was already said I apologize. I agree with the OP 100%. Someone commented on how that ‘we’ elitest gamers have nothing to lose if everything gets balanced. You are wrong, you are so very wrong. There is no such thing as perfect balance. The only way to have every class balanced is if every class had the exact same skills. The way they balance things is they either make it easier, nerf it or fix bugs. Assuming Anet didn’t put the bugs in intentionally to ‘balance’ things out then the only thing they should have to change is fixing them. If they dumb down the class it wont be near as rewarding or as fun to play. If they nerf it then it wont be as rewarding. I think the class is perfectly fine the way it is. Just fix the bugs and leave everything alone. There arekittenclasses for people who can’t click fast and people with a slow learning curve.

I didn’t know that other classes had weapon swap. I’m always cursing that I’ve got to manually switch between staff and scepter and dagger.

Just more of a reason why I’m considering leaving the game. All the mages are screwed up from what I’ve read on the forums and I only play mages because of how cool …well how cool they are suppose to be.

We need weapon swap amongst many other things for this to be worth my time.

You must be new to the forums. NEVER have what you read on the forums build a opinion of a class you haven’t personally tried yourself. Read every single classes forum on every single MMO and they are ALL negative. Look at thiefs and mesmer’s forum. Both of those classes are borderline OP in my opinion and all they do is complain. I personally took mesmer to a very high level and I thought it was easy mode. Almost too easy. I can solo champions with hardly moving at all. I can pull packs of enemies at a time with no risk of dying. I dominate in pvp. There is NO downside to the class, yet people STILL complain on the forums. The forums are not for building opinions on class, they are for learning additional information about them. For example I didn’t know you could cast lightning flash in the middle of a churning earth without it being interrupted. I never would have tested that or ever bought lightning flash. Now that I know I created my own build and opinion and I find the elementalist to be extremely easy at pve. When it doubt just remember, its not the class, its you.

personally, i just put 25 points into arcana… IMO it’s not too worth it unless it’s changed to somewhere around 1/3 to half the damage as actual churning earth…. and i’d agree that it would be rather OP. though if you think about it, it isn’t THAT op… since OP or UP only matters really in PvP.

take heartseeker, for example. even after the nerf, 2 random heartseekers will still deal as much damage as the average hit of churning earth… albeit in melee.

You’re forgetting one very important fact though. Earth element is defensive. A elementalist built around earth, condition damage and toughness will last MUCH longer than a thief AND has many more answers to different situations than a thief. It isn’t all about who has the longest sword.

At the very LEAST you should have two. Fire and earth work wonders together, but personally I wish I could only be earth. I do the majority of my killing with Churning wave but without the other elements to back me up I would feel sub-par. You can’t compare the elementalist in guild wars 2 to the elementalist in guild wars 1. This is a whole different game.

If you get interrupted on churning earth it goes on full cooldown. I do use Earth shield to trigger at 50% but not for security in casting Churning Earth. I don’t want to start channeling it when I hit 50%. The higher you get the more common enemies initiate with a daze or knockdown skill. If you pull a group and start with churning earth and they knock you down things are going to get unnecessarily messy. If you pop Earth shield immediately after beginning the channel for Churning earth there is no chance it gets interrupted. I use the 50% one as a oh-crap button. I also generally switch it out for a more damaging earth trait if things are going smoothly. If I pull a group of knockdown guys and start with Glyph of storms I’m going to get knocked down before it goes off. It does have a cast time. The entire purpose of using both arcane shield and earth shield is you never have to cast churning earth without at least one of them. Lightning flash is there for different situations. I just find glyph of storms a completely purposeless ability, but its fine. The arguments are there. People can choose for themselves.

Like I said in my opening post it one shots things until level 60. This is a guide for leveling and honestly if you can’t figure out how to play the class by level 60 maybe its just not for you. I find survival to be far more important than a 2 second cast 60 second cooldown mediocre damage CC spell, especially since I have enough damage to already finish off the monsters with no downtime, but that’s just me.

It has a 60 second cooldown and like a two second cast. This is PvE. It’s fast paced. It also offers nothing from traits until you spec into glyphs which is pointless. Armor of Earth is also a cantrip and also benefits from cantrip traits if you go that route. Considering a single churning earth is enough to kill a group of monsters the extra damage isn’t really needed. Since it also has a long cast there is a good chance you will be knocked down or interrupted unless you pop arcane shield or armor of earth, which makes casting it pointless since those are for churning earth.

The strongest point with a elementalists is they have the most powerful downed abilities. Sure they are useless 90% of the time but if you down another opponent at the exact same time or even a few seconds after he downs you then you will come out victorious because your mist form resets your down meter to 50%. Your elemental also doesn’t go away while downed so be sure to use that ice elemental!

Lightning Flash is 100000x better than Glyph of storms, sorry.
It has a much faster cooldown, it breaks stun, it’s more versatile and it has no cast time.
It’s also a cantrip, so if you go the fire or water route you can get regeneration or might after using it.

Strategy #3 -> If you are in a camp with a lot of ranged monsters its better to single target them down. Start in fire, cast a dragon’s tooth. Then shoot a phoenix at them. Cast 1, ring of fire, fire grab. Switch to lightning and finish off. Try to bundle a lot of melee monsters up to 1 ranged guy.

A elementalist build to tank can solo a champion that isn’t a archer. I’m sure he can solo a archer champion with staff since they have several projectile destroying abilities but I try not to solo champions because its a long and arduous task. Basically just start with earth and circle strafe a champion while using your auto attack. If it looks like he might hit you cast Dust Devil. If you need breathing room you can ride the lightning away from him. This works better with + run speed but its not required once you learn how to circle strafe. Alternate between Earthquake (if it effects him) Dust Devil Arcane shield and Armor of Earth if it looks like you’re going to be hit. Lightning flash also gives you breathing room.

Good luck and I hope that helps!

Hey there! I just read a lot of threads where people are constantly asking for advice on PvE for a elementalist. I generally pick up on classes and learn how to master them very quickly in any type of MMO. I consider myself a above average player. I’m shamed to admit that elementalist took me longer than any other class I’ve ever played to learn but once I figured it out PvE has become easy mode.

This build can work for both staff and S/D. I’m sure staff has a higher potential for AoE damage but I prefer S/D because they compliment each other so well.

I update my gear every ten levels. This is very important. It doesn’t cost much to update your gear. You can earn the silver just by simply playing your character and still have enough left over to buy the trait tomes. I focus on three primary stats in descending order: Toughness -> Vit -> Condition Damage.
I try to buy all armor that has Toughness and Vit because armor that uses condition damage and precision is not as useful. Then I rune the armor with Condition + Toughness runes like minor rune of the undead. The jewelry I try to find condition damage jewelry and rune it the opposite.
For traits I like to max out Earth while leveling then either go for Water for more survivability if needed, Arcane for awesomeness, Fire for more damage or Air for the bonus run speed. It’s entirely up to you, I just recommend maxing out earth first. I am biased towards earth because I find controlling the earth element to be the most awesome.
The slot skills are VERY important. I recommend going Arcane Shield, Lightning Flash, Armor of Earth and Ill explain why when I get to the strategy.
The elite skill really doesn’t matter. In my opinion they all suck haha. I switch them up. If I have to take down a lot of objects I usually use firey greatsword to speed things up. I use tornado for the Lols and elemental if I’m soloing a champion.

I strongly believe building tanky is the right way to go. You are probably thinking Ugh, I don’t want to play a caster to be a tank. I want to kill things fast. I assure you things die very fast. Lets get down to the strategy and pro-tips.

Strategy # 1 -> Start in earth. If you are working on a heart that involves killing something in a enemy camp start by casting Rock Barrier. If you have the right gear this will put your armor higher than most warriors. Then run around a large area and get everythings attention with Stone shards. Start small first but once you get use to it you can easily handle 10+ monsters as early as level 20. Try to pull as few archers as possible. When they are all round up start casting my favorite all time spell….. Churning Earth. As soon as its channeling cast Arcane Shield, this with your toughness will guarantee survival. When it goes off follow up with a back roll and Dust Devil or a Earthquake. A single Churning Earth has killed every group of monsters I’ve pulled except Ettin all the way until level 60, even specced as a tank. If somehow something didnt die you can either switch to fire and drop some AoE or pick them off with your auto attack while moving.
Pro Tip #1 – If you are working on a event and there are monsters charging at you or you see a large cluster of monsters in one spot start casting Churning Earth then when its about finished use Lightning Flash to teleport in the midst of the group. Lightning Flash does not stop Churning earth from channeling.
Pro Tip #2 – If you are fighting monsters that use heavy interrupts and knockbacks instead of using Arcane Shield, use armor of earth. Also use armor of earth when arcane shield is on cooldown. When you get the timing right you wont need to use either.

Strategy#2 -> Use this when inbetween Churning earth cooldowns. Start with earth and cast the armor. Pull like before with the auto attack. When they are clustered switch to fire. Drop ring of fire followed by a Phoenix INSIDE the ring of fire for might stacks. Then use Fire grab and switch to lightning. Use Lightning strike on whatever you are targeting. Its instant, may as well. Then use ride the lightning into the group and updraft to get away safely. If they are still not dead switch back to fire or to water for shatterstone. This strategy requires alot more button pushing but in my opinion its reward watching all the elements come into play.
Pro Tip# 1 -> Using a Phoenix inside Ring of Fire grants might stacks.
Pro Tip# 2 -> Strafing in a circle around your clusters enemies avoids a lot of damage.
