I’d like to add my experience tonthis thread as it seemed someone else had a better experience this bwe with dh like I did.
Dragon’s maw was and is a great elite and works against the stealther types one would face in pvp. But it, like the other traps are only gotcha skills. Dropping it as soon as you see that guy disappear isn’t gonna save you from the burst. But standing on point with your traps up is a nasty surprise when you chain the three useful traps together. Those being dm, pob and the light one that reveals, its name escapes me now.
But i wholeheartedly agree that traps require more thought and planning for use than what we, as a class, are used to. Trappers in wvw are a thing, and if you’re facing a smart trapper, a very annoying and potent thing.
My preliminary opinion after playing dragonhunter for an evening is that it feels better, less clunky than the previous BWE, but sighting issues and justice having no synergy between the new justice and the virtues line (ie, supreme justice, which was automatically traited along with permeating justice btw, not reducing the attacks to proc from 5 to 3), as resolve and courage do. Traps still niche and out of place. The heal trap still practically screams to be used in the middle of a packed fight, and if you’re fully healed and laying as a fail safe, the enemy can and have run in, trigger it and waste the extra healing. Maybe this trap shouldn’t be a trap but a consecration and operate like a pulsing heal that can be ground targeted and placed into your frontline players.
Dragon hunter’s life is still one of no line of sights and obstructions galore, but ya know I’m working around it. Was great fun in wvw and in the open world last night. Just have to remind myself no to dive off into a batch of critters or players, even if it was to drop traps in the middle of them because it no worky. Look forward to more changes next weekend tho. Great fun, much more than last weekend.
Supreme justice doesn’t work with spear, as others have mentioned. That should be rectified for possibility of converting burn guard to longbow. Most of the changes noted in Karl’s post are pretty much where I thought dragonhunter fell flat on. Oh and the obstructed by ankle high hills bs.
How about the traps, if only one or two be create symbols, to sync better with the zeal line?
Its only a medium server for wvw, so come on by kill some guys with us. :P
Thank you sir for pointing out this pun
Suggestion: 'sniper' thief specialization

I like p/p myself and would like to see rifle on thief also, maybe bring back richocet with the spec. But I imagine, if anything, it’d be along the lines of those pale reavers we saw in beta
I would like a spear please.
Hmm, i dunno, did anyone ever try a Dire for condi burning ?
I would assume a Dire set would give enough toughness and vit for survivability, but you’d need to go full zerk on weapons, jewelry and backitem to compensate in power.
But i’m sure you’d burn everything to smithers .
I find burn is at its most effective without zerker. If power is a concern, you can always mix carrion or sinister. In my experience since patch, dire and carrion work well, but roaming and 1v1 its a mixed bag. Especially against classes with a lot of cleansing.
Burn guards can be offensive, at least I am. But i use a mix of carrion and dire for more of a bunker burn. The burn works best as a team fighter with a small group or a pair. If you find yourself in 1v1, best to pace the opponent so he exhausts his cleanses before dropping the stacks on top of him.
I’m impressed by it, taught me a thing or two about and JI that i never considered before. Thanks for the vid.
Or if it haven’t been suggested, change shield 5 to a reflect field and use the above post’s suggestion for ahield 4
I think shield isn’t all that viable a support weapon, even in the limited areas it’s useful. I would have liked the shield trait to add aegis to the shield skills for a needed boost, like shield 4 provides aegis along with protection and shield 5 provide aegis at toggle. Seems like a balanced trade off.
As is, i use it for cosmetic reasons

Must have been the burns.
I run a carrion burn, and with amplifiee wrath, shelter and swapping to focus in the middle of mesmer or thief burst and they tend explode themselves. I find that idont use JI for anything other than a stunbreak. Now i don’t play ranked, so that is probably where my success comes from. This build is a definate one to two trick pony, but they are kitten good tricks.
