With the CDI vote upon us, (and in hopes we’re in the top 3), I thought it would be a fun idea for the Necro forum to start some threads about dream changes. I think it’s important to stay positive in our communications with the Devs, so if we can stay upbeat, that’d be nice. (Remember, no matter how bad it is, at least we aren’t Rangers!)
I really like the look of our minions, but I believe their skills are lackluster – especially in PvE. The Necro is too selfish of a class for PvE, wouldn’t it be nice for our minions to bring some team presence? Here’s some ideas I’ve had for changes to the skills of our minions.
1. Blood Fiend
Isn’t this guy cool? A floating, bloated, blood-filled balloon is a great necro minion heal, but couldn’t he be better? I’d like to change his mechanics for his siphon. Instead of healing the necro a bit on auto-attack, I think the Blood Fiend should instead grow in size as he sucks blood from the enemy. Using the Active Skill should still sacrifice the Blood Fiend, but the heal should scale based on the amount of blood drawn by the Fiend. Imagine a full Blood Fiend, nearly bursting with blood like a greedy mosquito. It’s a cool visual and very necromantic. On using the Active Skill, the necro receives the direct heal, AND it bursts in an AOE team heal that scales on Necro Healing Power (giving the necro some small team bonus!).
2. Bone Minions
We need to summon two different minions on using this skill. One should do relative high direct damage and the other should transfer conditions on bite. Visually, the direct damage minion could have a cool bone helmet and a little charge attack (no knockback, but something to get them in the fight quick). The condi bone minion can stay the cute little undead squirrel we love, and on bite give the enemy weakness, bleed, torment, or poison. We also need the ability to target one of the two to blow up first, as I’m tired of hitting my nuke and the wrong one blows.
3. Flesh Wurm
Necromancers need team utility, and allowing the Flesh Wurm tunnel to act as a portal for team mates would go a long way for this. It would be a limited version of the mesmer portal with a shorter leash AND should allow enemies to use it, but they incur a condi (bleed, poison, torment, blind, or weakness) when they use it.
4. Shadow Fiend
I know some people like the blind on this guy for PvP, but Necros already have several sources of blind. Instead, I think we need a reflect and the fiend could do it. His active skill should be a ground targeted ability. On use the shadow moves to the designated spot, and the necro rips it apart, causing its shadow form to split into a wall – killing the Fiend, but reflecting projectiles and acting as a dark field. This gives the Necromancer a large reason to slot this guy in PvE and gives us a more util purpose in Fractals.
I really like the Bone Fiend and the Flesh Golem skills and think they are great!
How would you change the minion skills to increase necromancer team presence?
1. Ranger
2. Necro
3. Engi
Cleanest waters in all of Tyria, I tell you!
Ask and ye shall receive.
Nice shot!
At least if you’re going to solo, could you please post pictures of yourselves dancing in the waterfall? That was really the big purpose of this thread.
Also, I want to make a thief now too. Thanks for sharing your video!
30/x/x/x/30
Trait for DS crit. Run Zerker. Maybe well if you want. BiP. Daggers. Maybe Axe.
More survival than many zerker builds, but a bit less damage and only cleave comes from piercing on Life Blasts in DS. Great though, and IMO, lots of fun to play.
Good points, Thaddeus. Seems like CM needs something to sweeten the runs, maybe a guaranteed dye drop with the daily chest?
30, x, x, x, 30 is safest bet, DS Crit build.
What game version: PvE, PvP, W3?
Why’s CM got such a bad rap? The Minister’s pretty chill, and is really grateful for all the work we’ve made, clearing out the bandits. Check out this selfie of me at one of his famous pool parties! #notamodel #chillininCM
Ranger sword is awesome, leave it be.

These are really all I care about
Still no win after 20 tries!!! I never die and always complete my platform. Why is my enjoyment held hostage by baddies? Why do I have to afk for an hour in Main server just for a better chance because overflows are terrible?
I don’t really want it to go, but it really makes sense for it to do so. I’d love something new to move in though! Maybe a nice spider infestation or a cool new Nightmare Court themed reclamation of the area? We see the ruined remains of the labs and whatnot overgrown.
Hi! Just wondering if the Aether Path of TA will be leaving with the conclusion of the Scarlet arc? The Path is heavily based on Scarlet being alive and still actively controlling the Aetherblades and communicating with the player. I’d just like confirmation on whether this path will be leaving soon.
Thanks!
I love this Marionette fight, but I hope ArenaNet looks into doing a split version of events like this going forward.
I’d like to see an instanced, hard version of this challenge, similar to a Guild Mission. This version would give increased rewards and allow the people like myself who enjoy harder content to do so.
For the open world PvE version, scale down the difficulty substantially, allowing everyone to come together and enjoy the fight.
Currently, only main servers seem to be completing this marionette fight with any regularity. This is forcing people to afk in main servers for up to 45 minutes before the fight to have an increased chance of success. That’s not fun… it’s boring, or it’s a bunch of auto-running into a wall to not get booted while you do something else. To make it worse, you’ve really got to be in main server during peak times to have the best chance at that! I’ve done this fight probably 10 times now and still not seen boss 5 because I’m either in main during off-time or on an overfail.
Failure fatigue in the game is very real right now. People are tired of doing their part over and over and having no recognition for that. Why not increase rewards for people who clear their platform? I love open world content, but this is grueling and abusive, which is why the map chat becomes toxic.
I’d like an invite!
MM is great right now if you’re good with the combo Bhawb mentioned above. Still have tough fights with heavy CC builds, but it’s not so bad since last patch. Terror builds are great too, especially if you’re good at fear juggling.
I’ve been running a 30, X, X, X, 30 build since the patch and carrying some stun breakers and like it so far. Plenty of burst and crits availble if you take the grandmaster DS trait for crits. Used it so far in sPVP and PVE (though I’m not geared properly yet for the traits PVE…too expensive).
Dagger also requires you to be close up in melee, of course the tradeoff is more damage.
Also, thanks for the head’s up that Axe Training affects Life blast! I did not know that.
Make sure to report this in the bugs section of the forum to ensure it’s seen.
Axe is wonderful for hybrid builds, especially since the aoe boon strip with axe 3 now. It’s great for sPvP when assisting in defending/taking a point and the c/d is very nice. The auto-attack is un-impressive, but it allows you to move back from a fight to heal while still attacking and stacking vulnerability.
So how do we communicate. Is anyone in game practicing? Is the team already formatted?
Looking forward.

ARG! I can’t make this time slot this particular Thursday, but I really am interested in playing with you guys. Need more events!
Man I have been loving MM builds recently. If I could just get those dang bone minions to move a little quicker, it’d be sick. Thanks for the cool build.
This is pretty sweet. I’d be down to join you folks if you do it again.
Nice! I’m so excited about the increased duration of vuln on axe auto attack. More duration = more stacks I can spam when my better sources are on CD. All in all a pretty big buff package in all the right areas. Minions and Axe. Oh my!
Thanks for the post Nemesis! I’ll check this out tonight when I get home.
What wells you looking to run? What weapons are you running? What’s your trait spread?
That might help a little bit.
I really hope this gets looked at. It’s driving me crazy and happens almost every time i leave DS.
Think the Arah fix came in the January patch.
I like Reanimator, but I wish the little guys were invulnerable to damage and just had a time life limit before they died.
Here’s a link to the necromancer forum discussing the issue.
This has been occuring since the January Patch
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Death-shroud-3/first#post1367687
Upon leaving DS, the utility skillbar is blank for about 1 second and then the skills populate. Please review. That one second can kill you.
I am having this issue as well. It can cause some serious problems for my playstyle as I use DS when I’m low on health sometimes and leave when my heal CD is ready.
Thanks for the suggestions! I tried out several of them last night.
Great point DeathShada! I always forget about Epidemic. I generally toss Spectral Walk out of my build fist. I really like the Etherial Field I get from the wall. Confusion bolts and Chaos armor is great. I can lay the field in front of my melee group in a zerg and watch my friends get 5secs prot and my enemies get confusion and 10 stacks vuln. Great suggestions guys! I really appreciate your inputs.
I use the build for higher level FOTM and dungeon play as well and if I have warriors or thieves on the team, I see bosses melt pretty quickly.
Yeah, I didn’t want to go too deep into foods and whatnot for the intitial write-up, but that’s exactly why I’m fully down the spite line. All my conditions (vuln, poison, daze, cripple, weakness) benefit from duration and not damage.
I haven’t even seen Nemesis’s build, but I’ll look at it. Glad to know I’m on the track of a popular one though. I run cleric’s set for survival and haven’t had problems with dying in WvWvW.
I’ve been running a Vulnerability / Support stacking build for the last month or so with my necro – taking note of the many sources of vulnerability we get.
Vulnerability
With this build, I have 6 reliable sources of adding vulnerability to often multiple sources. With the Lich Elite, I gain a 7th source (though I prefer Plague form for its utility).
Vulnerability on the Axe Auto-attack.
Vulnerability on the Focus #4 Skill.
Vulnerability on the Well of Suffering.
Vulnerability on the Spectral Wall.
Vulnerability on the shots from DS Life Blast (which pierces).
Vulnerability every 3 seconds to nearby foes when I am in DS.
With the traits, sigils, and runes selected I can achieve 50% vulnerability length increase too. Generally I keep enemies anywhere from 5-15 stacks of vulnerability easily. My vuln spikes can pop up to 25 if I stack it right.
Surviving
Because I’ve traited somewhat into death magic, I’m able to better utilize the 3 sources of protection I can receive.
Protection when casting wells.
Protection when crossing Spectral Wall (can hit this twice if you time it correctly).
Protection from trait “Last Gasp” in Soul Reaping Trait Line.
Two of these protection sources can be provided to struggling allies as well, and Spectral Wall is an ethereal combo field which is all sorts of fun.
Playing
I mainly use the axe for this build. I prefer to use dagger as my secondary weapon for its life siphon (weak, i know, but it’s something) and for its root skill. I like the permanent swiftness combo with this build using warhorn and spectral walk because I WvWvW a lot.
Could I get some feedback on this? I’ve been really happy with the build so far, but I know it’s not perfect yet.
I completely disagree with this title. My necromancer is super tough and has no problems living at all. I can face tank damage for a while in dungeons generally – especially if I got a Guardian at my back to synergize with.
Maybe post your build on the thread? Perhaps you’re running too much of a glass cannon build.
Title says it all – Especially if they are going to keep up with the “combo finishers” daily requirement.
Ranger takes a long time to get rolling on high lvl play. Ignore the negatives and learn the class…there’s a ton of complex combos you can pull off with rangers that are fun. Are they the best for high-level play for tPvP? I don’t know, but I do great in random sPvP and in WvWvW and FOTM and have tons of fun.
I’m hopeful for the DS UI improvement this month. They’ve already said devs are working on it and “UI Improvements” were teased as coming soon.
I bet we see no AI improvement for any pet classes yet (maybe by March).
I’d like to see an axe damage buff, but I’m actually pretty happy with my new Vulnerability stack build for FOTM and WvWvW.
Minor bug fixes and removal of spectral walk parachute are high chances because the spectral walk bit screws up dungeon design.
Think there was a glitch that caused the pet to climb things when you used the Guard shout, but I don’t think that works anymore. That also may have been what you were seeing.
No, this is not true. Though people have reported online that moving LARGE AMOUNTS of gold from several persons to garner a certain achievement did cause a false-positive ban, this is not a normal circumstance by any means.
You are free to mail items, gold, food etc to your friends in game.
You will run into a problem if you start selling/buying gold for actual currency such as the US Dollar or the Euro.
Hope this helps.
Necro minion AI needs to be fixed first so we can accurately gauge minion effectiveness. After that, we can judge the need for buffs/nerfs.
Not speaking about the bugs with the trait, I believe that Reanimator would be better served if the Horrors were completely invulnerable to damage, save the degen.
This would give us a constant expectation for how long they would survive, and a reasonable expectation for the amount of bleed stacks the trait would proc.
