you guys didnt played gw1

agony system was in gw1 and that was released 2 years before lotro

lotro tried to copy it and failed becouse different game mechanics

Infusion in GW1 was not even close to being the same. It was part of the main story and a painless one at that. You didn’t have to grind for it or anything of the sort. It was basically killing one mob, bringing an item it drops to an NPC and you’re done.

Moreover, heroes and pets in GW1 were always infused so you can potentially beat the whole campaign without even getting infused yourself.

Most importantly, Infusion in GW1 did not require a a new set of armor. It was automatically applied to your existing armor.

Actually, it was a bit of a grind when GW1 released. When the game first came out, each run to the Seer and Abomination only infused 1 piece of armor. The mission outpost chat in the first week(s?) of the game was all either “Infusion Run” or “GLF fully infused”. And, of course, there were no Heroes back then, just terrible AI henchmen.

Anet fortunately quickly realized how horribly stupid it was, and changed the infusion to infuse all pieces of armor, not just once per run.

That small piece of pedantry aside, the comments are correct – Infusion in the original game only gated a few storyline missions. Infusion was never needed for later “end game” content like Underworld, Fissure of Woe, or Sorrows Furnance.

Exactly. Only ascension was needed. Ascension doesn’t even exist in GW2.

Exactly… and…

People seem to have forgotten what infusion was designed for. Infusion was designed to completely stop players from completing the campaign if they were able to skip through a huge amount of content by crossing Lornar’s Pass (Beacon’s Perch to Droknar’s Forge runs). Only by beating your doppelganger and acquiring ascension could you infuse, which then let you complete the game and gain access to Ring of Fire, which is crawling with Mursaat.

In other words, infusion and ascension had nothing to do with your ability to play. It was just a requirement to beat the campaign.

ArenaNet needs to look back at Guild Wars 1 and realize what went astray.

Campaigns after Prophecies saw players reaching statistical caps very early on – it was the content that came after that really challenged players. As you progressed further, you often encountered enemies and mobs with higher stats than what normal players could reach, and it gave players an incentive to figure out what skills or strategies to employ (well, at least before PvXWiki became too prominent).

The point here is that anyone can try these content, but they challenge players equally without giving them statistical crutches. If you couldn’t complete late-game areas (see DoA in Nightfall as an example), you had no reason to complain that it was because your gears weren’t up to snuff – the “best” armors and weapons statistically were widely available early on. You had to adopt a different approach, or simply admit that you weren’t good enough.

In GW2, I was somewhat disappointed by the relative lack of difficulty in general PvE. Compared to GW1, the only explorable areas that felt remotely challenging was Orr, and I see everyone in the forums wanting to tone down Orr. Sigh.

ArenaNet should definitely add more challenging areas. These don’t have to be lv80 areas – you guys could even modify existing areas so players have a smoother difficulty curve. I know for many players, jumping into Orr was a pretty stark change – not unlike players in Factions jumping straight from Shing Jea into Vizunah Square.

But please, no statistical progression. ArenaNet already has prior experience designing non-gated content – they just need to look at their previous game to do it.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who absolutely loved how challenging Guild Wars was.

No.

When I first started playing Guild Wars, I was hooked. I stopped after Factions for a bit because of school, and picked it up again during Nightfall. I wasted so many hours on that game… close to 800 or more. The game was a true representation of how horizontal scaling needs to work.

The level 1-79 PvE experience was great in GW2 (except for the laughably bad personal story). But after that…. it just didn’t grab me the way Guild Wars did.

I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that unless major changes to the game design are made I won’t be coming back to Guild Wars 2.

I’m a casual player and even I have 4 crafted exotic sets, 1 dungeon armor set, full compliment of exotic weapons usable by my profession, world completion is at 56% only.

Ascended gear is welcomed with open arms, people complain about gear hamster wheel but they do not see that ascended gear is just in between exotic and legendary, now if they add something like godly armor as higher than legendary THAT right there would be a gear hamster wheel.

Most of the people complaining, I see them as the part of the player base that never even touched guild wars 1 and have no idea about infused armor, how it works and how it is NOT part of a gear hamster wheel.

“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.”

I would call that a treadmill.

Sounds like a treadmill, looks like a treadmill, feels like a treadmill. Probably is a treadmill.

GW1 vet here. All of the systems in Guild Wars 2 are abysmal. Combat is designed around dodging and downed state, rather than skill. Traits are stat bonuses with small situational perks. Guild system discourages guild loyalty by allowing you to jump around guilds. Magic find causes players to sacrifice ability for probability. Loot is now based on six rarities, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and purple. The Mystic Forge is the RNG system without the fun part.

I’m done with Guild Wars 2. Ascended armor is a gear check at its best. And for those defending the infusion system in Guild Wars, infusion was a necessary evil designed to stop talented players from progressing into the end game without completing all of the cooperative missions. How quick people are to forget Droknar’s Forge runs!

This is in no way similar to how it works in Guild Wars 2. Stat bonuses to ascended armor make all other armors irrelevant. Not that stats on armor matters, because in the end combat is just based on dodging LOL

Easy. Remove all levels from the game. Make all players have the same equal base stats. Provide variety to armor by adding meaningful runes and insignias. Use rarity as exactly that: rarity. Rarer items are harder to drop in the world and in the Mystic Forge. Certain zones only drop certain items. Etc. etc.

HOWEVER, I like the game. Overall, it’s brilliant. OP, your points have some value, but you’re missing the point of the game. It isn’t a vehicle to deliver you into more interesting combats. It is a world. It is meant to be explored, not just fought.

There are a HUGE number of stories being told. Zones are full of interesting events. If you only slog through the battles, well then yes, it is boring. But, if you try to find out why you’re having to kill wave after wave of pirates trying to attack some poor lass’es farm, it gets interesting. And there are HUNDREDS of these mini-stories being told constantly.

Don’t play to get to the end. Don’t play to earn titles. While both are fun, this game was intended to be MUCH more than that. It is a world to be discovered. And, when you get it all discovered, I suspect the devs will have cooked up a bunch of new sub-plots to keep you busy.

I hate the game sometimes (see the post above), but I keep coming back because there is SO much to discover.

And what if you don’t like exploring? What if you like getting to the end? What if you like getting titles? You’re kind of missing the point here… You’re telling a player how he should play and enjoy the game. If that is the case, then ArenaNet failed in their objective.

OP, I’ve been firm on the points you’ve made since release and I see that the reaction to these posts has not changed. I’m sorry you’re getting flamed and I think your post deserves some more recognition by the community.

I agree with everything you’ve said. I have a group of friends that also agree and we have all stopped playing Guild Wars 2. Unfortunately, they are part of the player-base that do not log on to the forums and express their opinion.

I was a very big Guild Wars fan and I believe that ArenaNet has a chance to save this game.

“Save”? Many players may argue there is nothing wrong with the game. I do see that in its current state, the game may be fun for some players. But in my opinion, the game design in Guild Wars 2 will cause players to leave after a short period of time and will not retain the same value and depth the original Guild Wars had.

I all haven’t touched the game since Halloween, much less log on to the forums. I’ve become incredibly bored with the game. I don’t enjoy exploring and PvP in most games, so the PvE was the only content I was looking forward to because for me it gives me the most enjoyment. Sadly, Guild Wars 2 did not deliver.

To review your points, I agree:

  • Combat is shallow – Combat is mostly built around positioning and dodging. I didn’t log on to play a third-person action game or an FPS. I want an RPG. I want to be able to sit down and think about my build. Zones and dungeons should have different gameplay mechanics. Skills need a bit more oomph. Builds need to complement the trinity system, not degrade it. It feels like each profession is the jack of all trades, master of none. Downed mechanic and dodging are super uninteresting to me. Elites are completely pointless, rarely change the tide of battle.
  • Game mechanics are shallow – Exotic armor and weapons have better stats than rare armor. This completely goes against their horizontal scaling game design. Armor sets are confusingly specialized into certain stats. Runes, sigils and gems feel half-baked, like an extra layer of fluff. Traits are mostly irrelevant if they do not provide stat bonuses. Weapon skills are static and most professions contain odd skills attached to each weapon. Dungeon tokens are horrid and limits the player to a very specific experience. Karma is horrid and feels like more fluff (everything that works with karma works just as well if replaced with gold).
  • No incentive to visit other zones/zones generally uninteresting – Zones don’t scale your rewards. Mobs are facerolled if too many players are together. There are no unique drops in the game, so you don’t need to go to an area to farm them. Mobs are generally all the same, have the same characteristics with few tweaks. End-game, which is unofficially titled due to the loot table, is mostly all the same. World bosses do not change the world, provide no sense of havoc. The world is mostly static, does not evolve.

I’ve pretty much just touched the tip of the iceberg here. I guess the only good thing I’ve gotten out of this game is I’ve been inspired to assemble a team and create an independent MMO. Hope you all keep enjoying the game and I hope to be able to come back someday and enjoy it as well.

Ok i just disabled my Mobile Authenticator for Guildwars 2 due to the fact it prompts me for the serial code; every single time i log in. There should at least a “memory system” like the Battlenet Authenticator, which remembers you if you’re logging in from the same location; avoiding repeated entries of the serial code. Hope Anet does something about this

Anyways can anyone tell me after i disable Mobile Authenticator, would the Email Authentication for my account be enable again ? Because the site tells me that if you install the Mobile Authenticator, Email Authentication would be disabled.

Luccian, I’m sorry you’re getting flamed. These forums are horrible sometimes. Anyways, I also agree with you. There should be an option to remember your location so you don’t have to constantly type in a new six-digit code every time you login.

Unfortunately, I don’t know whether the email authentication can be enabled again. Check your account settings.

For some reason I just can’t get myself to log into GW2. It feels like I such a chore to do anything in the game. I guess I don’t know what’s going on with it, but maybe the game is not for me?

Crafting—Was never a fan, so no surprise here.

Story(lore)—Not a fan at all. Not a roleplayer or anything, a bit too corny for me.

Jumping Puzzles—This to me is a complete joke in terms of “content”, like not even fun at all after the very first one I completed.

Dynamic Events—My biggest disappointment lies here. I would rather have every dynamic event replaced with heart quests, seriously. They take literally zero skill, so easy they can be auto-attacked through without ever dying. Very boring and repetitive imo/

Hearts—I actually like these, easily my favorite content in the game.

Dungeons—Biggest mess ever. There isn’t any strategy involved. Just feels like a big spam fest. I can’t get myself to do another one of these. I have completed just about every explorer mode dungeon without any issues.

Exploring—Nope, not for me. I never understood this.

Just throwing out my opinion on some of the things that the game offers in hopes that someone might have some ideas for me.

Like I said, I really want to like the game. I loved GW1 and just expected much more from the team at Arenanet. Is it even the same team?

I’ve come to something of a similar conclusion.

Fact is, GW2 feels like a huge, grind-y, sandbox-y mess. Most of the content, dungeons especially, feel very shallow and unchallenging for an organized group. WvWvW is supposed to be other “endgame” aside from explorables, but that also feels shallow and got old quickly(plus all the rendering issues). sPvP, same deal.

I’ve come to believe that since the game is supposed to be played for “fun” and be “accessible,” it’s more catered for casual play and messing around. It feels like a sandbox game. Kill this if you want to. Go explore that if you want to. Chase those “achievements” that are nothing but a grind. Grind for that one skin you really want. But there’s rarely an actual feeling of being challenged or making progression. As a result, maybe this game isn’t for people like you and me. But at least I can return to it every once in awhile since there’s no sub fee.

This is exactly how I feel. I haven’t logged in in weeks. I just come to the forums to check up on news and general consensus. This game is just uninteresting and I seriously don’t like anything about it.

Well good thing there is no sub fees and you already paid your 60 dollars. Which is a smart move by Anet doing this way. Its impossible to please everyone. I log in regularly and I have other that do too. Some just come back for special event. There is no obligation to play all the time just play when you feel like it. There is no sub fee

I’m sorry but this is such a stupid argument. This business model depends on continued releases of expansions. They’re not getting another dime from many players due to the level of disappointment. So while they made have made money now, their efforts are short lived.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posting here is a bad idea, for two reasons.

1. You aren’t alone, but most of those threads like yours are deleted very quickly.

2. Anet already knows how people feel. Their behavior so far should give you a hint how much they care.

I do like some of the game, but most of the points you brought up are valid.

I figured as much, hope it wouldn’t be that way. It’s one of the reasons why I didn’t feel like putting up a “you could fix or improve it like this!” thread. Seems like they’re not interested in working with the community at large, as long as people support what they’re doing currently—why listen to any dissenting arguments?

I’m actually terribly confused by a lot of the directions they went with things. Innovation is great, yes, but innovation for the sake of innovation can be outright destructive to your overall efforts.

I agree with OP and I also agree that the innovation in this game just isn’t executed correctly. There is no reason for parties other than to go to a dungeon. The game should have no levels, which removes the need for scaling down players and instead only scales players up. Without levels, the whole game is truly endgame. World bosses give no loot. Traits and special builds don’t matter because…everyone can do everything… just a few of my complaints to be honest. I was looking forward so much to the game and its just such a bore right now. It doesn’t captivate me like Guild Wars did.

I agree with many points in this thread. They should include more skills that can be swapped in the primary skill bar and give us the option to create more versatile builds. I rather be able to select from a limited variety of skills for two weapons than have to swap weapons back and forth and deal with seemingly useless skills that are purely situational. Most of the time I find myself going into my inventory and switching back and forth. If this is the intended functionality, then give us the option to swap weapon sets so we can swap weapon sets when we are not in combat.

I rather have the former option over the latter though. I rather have more skills through a limited weapon set that are relevant to that weapon.

Why is GW2 so Stingy with the Titles?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: dimgl.4786

dimgl.4786

Sorry, but it basically sounds like you want ArenaNet to make titles more attainable. Titles should be challenging to get. I agree with “add more titles” but not “make titles easier to get”. In fact, I feel like everything in this game should be harder.

Aside from GW1 titles, there’s a handful of titles. Half of the whopping 7 PVE titles require to spend enormous amounts of money and basically the title you get just means that…you spend an enormous amount of money. That’s hardly a personal achievement when anyone can just drop cash on gems or shady gold sellers.

The PVP titles are practically all the same, only denoted by how long you’ve played PVP and half of those titles require you to drop a buttload of money on tournament tickets.

There’s very little flavor or diversity to the titles. Here, take a look for yourself:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Title

Why are you showing me this?… You just proved I’m correct. More titles need to be implemented.

That’s just something you’re going to have to live with in this game unfortunately.

It’s incredibly shallow

I don’t get it. At a very minimum you have 15 abilities while in combat (at level 30) with multiple weapon sets, healing, utility, elite skills, special abilities (ie. Mesmers’ shatters; Warrior’s burst skill, etc), plus all them traits. If this feels shallow then I’m only a foot tall.

Turning a blind eye to the reality that not all classes have cohesive builds and many have filler: completely situtional skills and traits that can’t be used in normal combat. It’s not practical to have traits that only apply to certain situations because many players will seldom change their traits between fights.

Anet missed the mark completely with their ability system. Boring ability system equals lack luster combat.

Watch out, this is bait for the white knights!

There will never be vertical progression. However, with horizontal progression there should still be some sort of goal. This was apparently in Guild Wars. In Guild Wars 2…not so much. I won’t dive too deep into specifics because I’ll get flamed like always, but basically ArenaNet needs to give players a reason to get new armor sets and weapons, as well as an incentive to hop around the world gathering drops and loot.

This is all completely a matter of opinion. Many players feel the need to get to the end because the game has levels. Once you’re 80, you have reached the end and now you want to actually start playing the game. This is mentality fueled by a decade (or more) of gaming. Also, I feel like this game has no enjoyable endgame, for several reasons:

  • Again, there are levels. This game was clearly designed to not have levels, but they were included so players can feel a sense of progression.
  • Dungeons are tedious, involve only 5-man and are simply not epic in scale whatsoever.
  • Dungeons reward horrible loot (getting fixed…hopefully).
  • Returning to previous areas gives you bad loot.

For players that are centered on hard PvE content… Completion isn’t an opinion. I could care less about completion. I care about the challenge. And apparently so do my friends who played WoW pre-WotLK and GW.

Graphics glitches + Lack of response + Constant game crashing = F this...

Sort of a gross oversimplification of dungeon’s in other MMOs…. yes you do have tank n’ spank, but you also have bosses with some very interesting mechanics that you have to deal with.

There’s nothing wrong with the general idea of the GW2 style except for the fact that there’s often little need to spam boons or heals on other players, or use combo fields. The truly necessary co-op part is sort of missing other than the simple fact that “soloing this dungeon is likely very long or not possible so I need 4 other chaps to add their damage so I can get out of her in some timely fashion”.

This. So many skills seem wasted either because their cool down is too long or their effect isn’t noticeable without combos being used. Auto attack and kiting/dodging can only be fun for so long and used for a limited number of “fresh” boss encounters. More reaction based skills on reasonable cool down timers are needed imo. This would allow for more interesting fight mechanics instead of the way point DPS zerg racing we have now. Not to mention offer more variety when dealing with combat instead of simply kiting and dodging.

I agree with this. Some skills are simply too situational and their cooldowns are insane.

You’re dealing with typical MMO kitten. I deal with them everyday. The problem is there is no clear way to play in this game so neither you nor him are right. You have to play however it best works for you and your team.

Building a game around the idea of no trinity was a great idea, but I have to wonder why they stuck with the whole heavy/medium/light armor approach and promote statistics that basically mimic the trinity without giving you the tools to complete the build (taunts and proper heals). Doesn’t that seem kind of… counter intuitive?

Everything in this game is counter intuitive. Why have levels if the whole game is end game? Why have a horizontal scaling system if all gear has different stats? Why have magic find when all players should have equal chances of receiving drops? Wtf? WHY HAVE HEARTS IF THE WHOLE WORLD IS DYNAMIC?

Going back on topic, this combat system feels like its meant to appeal to players coming from MMOs that have a vertical scaling system just to convert them to a differe t mindset.

Why is GW2 so Stingy with the Titles?

Sorry, but it basically sounds like you want ArenaNet to make titles more attainable. Titles should be challenging to get. I agree with “add more titles” but not “make titles easier to get”. In fact, I feel like everything in this game should be harder.

I haven’t noticed the cost of waypoints since level 1 to about 20, to me this doens’t stop me from traveling around at all.

Wait till you’re 80 bud.

Thank you for spending so much time getting all of this data. The game definitely needs some work endgame, and it shows people want to do dungeons but aren’t getting much out of it

juiceman: Magic Find armor != armor rarity disparity.

These are two completely unrelated things. You lose stats by using Magic Find armor. Period. I’ll let you figure it out.

I agree with most every point, although I have no issues with combat and dodging, it’s an MMO, I expect crap combat though.
If this game had a sub fee I’d never have even considered buying it.
Since there is no sub, I can’t be too hard on AN. It’s one of the best MMOs out there and it’s B2P so..
I have no reason to log in anymore though, the game is boring to me, no direction, no point, nothing to strive for.

This is my issue as well. I log in and I’m just…bored. I don’t wanna PVP or WvW. I want to do CoE to get that sweet looking gear but no one wants to. Once I’m in the dungeon, the dungeon and gameplay mechanics are generally unfun. I go around the world, doing stuff. Nothing seems rewarding. Its just not a fun a game for me.

Will GW2 run on Linux?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: dimgl.4786

dimgl.4786

Linux has like 1% market share or something and most of that isn’t gamers. There’s no good reason for anybody to waste resources trying to make PC games run on it.

Great OS – for some things and some people (techies) – but not necessarily for PC gaming.

Yet. The keyword is yet. Linux has been gaining a lot of ground in the past few years and Windows 8 might make a lot of users consider switching.
