Has Server Population Increased?

I’m doubting you’ll get more information about their financial statements or populations as they are not publicly traded being a subsiderary of NCSoft. Although, they do have some "interesting," history:

The founders of ArenaNet were former employees of Blizzard Entertainment who played important roles in developing the highly successful video games Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, Diablo II, and the Battle.net gaming network.

ANet has also partnered with a company in China to send GW2 over there, and as such, needed to register with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). Can be found here:

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1285137/000114420412048835/v322755_6k.htm

But then again, NCSoft is mired in trechary and scandal:

1) Worlds.com patent lawsuit-->> Worlds.com CEO Thom Kidrin claimed the idea of a "scalable virtual world with thousands of users" is patented by his organization and targeted NCsoft for patent infringement in 2008. This was the first of many lawsuits against NCSoft. The case was "settled" but then again on July 22, 2010, Worlds.com requested the case be reopened.

2)Then there’s the Richard Garriott termination-->> Richard Garriott, lead developer of Tabula Rasa, sued NCsoft for US$47 million in damages concerning his termination from the company. Garriott had asserted in his suit that he was forced out of the company and was made to sell his 400,000 shares in NCsoft’s stock, losing him millions of dollars. In addition, he claimed that the company was guilty of fraud by forging his resignation announcement. Then on July 30, 2010, a jury in a Texas federal court awarded him US$28 million in damages. NCsoft was foolish to appeal the ruling. And guess what??? Garriott again prevailed on appeal and NCsoft was required to pay an additional US$4 million, bringing the total damages awarded to Garriott to US$32 million. - I guess NCSoft has to make up those lost dollars somehow - the GEM STORE

3) Oh and how could we forget the closure of Paragon Studios and City of Heroes on August 31, 2012??? NCsoft liquidated Paragon Studios and announced the closure of City of Heroes. Over 21,000 players signed an online petition contesting the shut-down and many used social media to promote their criticisms.

Mmmhmmm.... a company with a FANTASIC reputation

Has Server Population Increased?

I have sources just like others and also see/play the game + what people in the industry are saying.
Dont forget that the server status has nothing to do with how many are playing or active. It is just the amount of accounts tied to that server. CC eva said that in one of her posts.

Lankybrit:Most do release #’s
Honestly if they were doing fantastic pop #’s would be front and center. All major MMO’s release pop #’s although usually vague to a degree they are released.
Rift,Eve,Tor,Wow,LOTRO all release pop #’s.

Also if this game was doing so "fantastic," then they wouldn’t be trying to gouge and herd us into the gem store. But I suppose this is what happens when there is no monthly sub - make the game so tedious and frustrating that it forces us to spend rl money...

When a company doesn’t release any stats of their customer population, I’m sure its a great sign.

When a company doesn’t release any stats of their customer population, it’s normal practice and not surprising at all.

Cheers.

Not quite true. In America, if they are a publically traded company, then they are required by law or face so many wonderful fines to release any and all information to their stakeholders; i.e., the player base. If they are not publically traded and are still private they are not required as they are not regulated by the government which is a pity as I’m sure there are a lot of "practices" that should be looked into.

No my friend. It was ANet’s plan all along. Get you in the game, make "promises" and then rip them out from under you. You DO KNOW there is the store where you purchase stuff - right? What? You REALLY DIDN’T THINK this was going to be easy did you? No sub and just buy the game and play for fun??? Are you madd??? This is one of THE largest money sinks I HAVE EVER SEEN and I have been playing MMO’s for a very loooong time. Even the asian ones I play don’t have stupid crap like this...

What asian mmos did you play btw ? Have you played Aion for the instance? Where you farmed months for material so you can craft a weapon, then the craft failed and you had to do it over and over again? Or did you play Lineage where did you farm one spot for severals months to drop a recipe, etc? But in those games all you went for were Stats, you get those items and you were more powerful than everyone else.

In GW 2 .. who cares you have Legendary, players in ugly random skin gear can kill you in pvp like a kid or you can perform worse than someone in rare gear in dungeons. You are just angry because its hard to get your skin you dream of ? sad

I’m not angry at all I couldn’t give a rat’s asset to be quite honest. I’m just making an observation. And OBVIOUSLY if SO MANY PEOPLE are upset about something here, then there must be a modicum of truth in it and should not be brushed under the rug by the fanbois and those who lick ANet’s bottom...

A truly Legendary punishment - Charged Lodes

I just finished yet another hourly charged lodestone grind with 0 drops. And then it hit me: I have to spend between 150-250 hours to either farm for charged lodestones or farm them. By my playing standards that is around month and approximately 400g(by buying the cores instead)

Before you say that i want it easy mode or that i feel entitled to anything, i have finished most of my expensive gifts including fortune and i have no issues finishing up the rest of them BUT

Farming for Lodestones is a new level of grind, one that i have never seen in my 10 years of playing mmos and has to be by far the worst thing i have ahead of me.

My question is: Was this how the quest for a legendary really envisioned? Has anyone who developed this concept even tried to farm these recently? You have had 4 months to watch your data and make adjustments. It makes me think: Is this really intended? How could it, possibly?

I can hardly grasp it...

Legendary weapons & level cap increase...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mavet.3047

No because they haven’t confirmed if there will be levels beyond 80 (although they have strongly hinted at it). All they have confirmed for absolute is that they will always have the stats equal to the top tier. I would expect if they did raise the level cap (and I sincerely hope they don’t), they will have to scale certain tiers up.

No matter what will get posted in this thread there will only be conjecture and speculation at this point. Anet have confirmed nothing since such matters are a long way off and things can/will change before we get to the point of worrying about it.

Forget. Too many wow players moaning about lack of end-game. I am more than certain lvl cap will beincreased. It also wouldn’t suprise me if legendary items remained lvl 80.
As for the quote that legendaries will always be equal to top-tier it only relates to introduction of ascended gear.

This game is no longer Guild Wars 1, and seems like A-Net doesn’t care much about franchise history, since all the steps they make take GW2 in the ver opposite direction of what we are used to.

Agreed. All these greedy slimeballs are interrested in is money and how much to suck it out of the players. They’ve taken a walk down the dark side with EA Games and ActiBlizz. Another company ready for the crapper of history...

If you look in the stickies up top there is a thread that was started by Stephanie Lopresti (I think) about this issue... "Post data on perceived loot drops" or something like that. There is real data there that has been presented by players to support this as an issue. If you have any facts I would suggest posting there. Not trying to be a jerk I agree with you 100%. I just feel like if we keep putting solid data in there they will have fix it. Thanks!

Well this thread is more to explain why low drop rates are a bad thing. I would be surprised if the devs didn’t know their own drop rates.

They might look at that data and just go "So? It’s for the economy! Working as intended!"

Oh and I should mention that I haven’t noticed any changes. Drop rates have been low since day 1.

Yeah, they want us to grind, grind, grind, grind, grind... It’s just not rewarding to play. The devs want you to spend rl money in the store. Why do you think that they decreased the open world drop rates to the point of oblivion? IT IS ANET WE’RE TALKING ABOUT...

Temporary bans for profanity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mavet.3047

I happily abide the rules of conduct in this game. There is no sense in using profanity. Swearing is definitely not needed to get a point across. The amount of negativity that comes with profanity is significant and can turn away proper players.

This has nothing to do with being a prude or anything, it has to do with good community etiquette. If a commander or guild member is mouthing off to others in the same server it can ruin morale.

I don’t care how much another player next to you is messing up it is senseless to cuss him/her out. It is more helpful to calmly tell them what they are doing wrong.

If profanity and verbal harassment keeps up in Guild Wars 2 it could turn into another League of Legends or any DotA style game for that matter where mouthing off at your own teammates is common.

Guild Wars 2 is a game and games are there for fun. If you are swearing your head off you couldn’t possibly be having fun IMO. By all means play to win.

As long as ANet keeps getting their money, don’t expect much...

no need of that class of healer, is useless and you will never learn to real survive with it.

Not really sure where you’re getting your information from joe-bob. I played a disc priest in wow and could whip anyone’s asset - yes, a weak, lowly healer like a priest could whip your asset any day bub. Perhaps you just either suck at the game or were rude to the healers and that’s why they didn’t heal your sorry self. I don’t know but I’ve been playing probably from before you were in diapers and the only time a healer doesn’t heal is when they’re dealing with annoying fks.

Or maybe he just doesn’t like the standard trinity or dealing with arrogance of "I’m the healer, do as I want or screw you" which is pretty common in games where they are required. Lot of reasons possible beyond the ones you give in that arrogant display. Just because someone doesn’t like something does NOT equal unskilled. He’s right though, the standard trinity is not needed. There are ways to still do the roles of the trinity in a semi-dedicated way, just you need to do more in addition. The only issue I’ve seen in that regard in this game are from people who can’t adapt to something new.

No, clearly Joe-bob says: "no need of that class of healer, is useless and you will never learn to real survive with it." This is utter crap and that was my point.

No, because if you build for pure healing or tanking or DPS and neglect all other aspects of your character, you throw the balance of the game and take away my ability to play the style *I* want to play. Leave our game alone.

Blame ANet for that - THEY got rid of the trinity and if someone wants to play as a healer type, then let them. I didn’t realize this game had fascists in it...

I do like dungeons, but I don’t care for grinding dungeons all day long for tokens. I initially played this game to experience the open free world and tag along with people to complete these ’huge’ dynamic events.

Sadly this game has become a dungeon brawler (apart from the PvP aspect). I was crazy about this game before because they had hyped up how great the world was and how good dynamic events were. But to me, they are not hard enough and people just skip past them.

I want to see a world that is destroyed, unless people help out the towns folk etc. I want to be able to take back areas of the world map that hordes of mobs have taken over.

Oh that would be rift. Invastions can happen that kill the npc’s and you have to kill them to get the npc’s to respawn. Lots of fun, the devs care about the playerbase and are not greedy slimeballs like here. You should go and check it out.

the only events that gets ppl going to lower zones is the dragons thanks to chests dropping precursers now.

so get used to it. the high pop zones will have people in aprt from lsot shores, that place is a nightmare to go alone esp when u get 1 veteran karka +2 normal chase you.

Well it’s good to see that the human and asura zones are the only ones viable to play in unless you just want to play with yourself. But this is something to be expected from ANet...

A “dev” not knowing where the issue is coming from – wow not THAT is a shocker ROFLMMFAO!!!

Why don’t you actually do something useful and fix the crap you fked up like world loot drops??? I find it odd that you can “find a solution” in 72 hours if there is the potential of a exploit but yet takes you weeks to fix the debacles you create. But what do I know? I just have a Masters in IT so most of the bllsht that you’re spurting is just that – bllsht…

I work as a software QA. I assure you that it’s insanely hard to track down some of these problems. He’s made it his goal to get it in by the 14th. It means it’s something he’s dedicating time to.

The problem here is even if you know it’s flawed, you might not know where in the code the flaw is being applied and figuring that out can take weeks or more. He’s asking us for what we saw before and after in hopes that something leads him to the right area to look.

Honestly, this is standard. Every software company will tell you this is how it goes. There are just certain bugs that you go "Yeah that’s a bug, but kitten all, I don’t know where in the code it’s hiding."

Once they find the spot then he can start fixing it. Screaming at him for admitting he needs help, asking the experts for help, and giving us a pledge to get it fixed is not helpful for any one.

I have a Masters in IT - Security. One of the first things we learn when programming is to FULLY DOCUMENT and COMMENT OUT EVERYTHING. But ppl are lazy and have a tendency to cut corners and not place comments or write sloppy code. So it’s no wonder there are so many bugs. I won’t even go in to the whole concept of PM (Project Management) and the testing phase before bringing a system live. This is something that ANet is lacking on. Granted they may have a beta testing phase but without a PTS or a proper protocol for addressing all of the bugs and other problems, they might as well be dead in the water and who suffers? We do...

I’m am worried about the direction of GW2.

Over the 3 months since release I have seen a steady stream of patches and updates that do little to nothing for the long term development of the game and it’s community. This has me worried that what we’re seeing is a "Churn and Burn" policy from our game developers.
The constant content push, month after month, for new content instead of a focus on game stability and playability. The steady nerfs to the economy, drop rates and general wealth generation. The lack of genuine communication and any real QA from the development team.
All these issues are leading me to believe the the games designers are pushing for higher profits rather then the vibrant, progressive community all the current customers were hoping for when they purchased the game.

But these are just my observations. As erroneous as they may seem, I’m happy to discuss so...

Fire away

WoW yah think??? This IS a corporation after all and taking NCsoft’s/ANet’s previously crappy track record, are you REALLY all that surprised?? They’re really trying to emulate EA, "The Kiss of Death," and we know what kind of craptastic company that is....

Q: When most people hear "MMO" they think "grind". You need to grind your to the levels by killing monsters and it’s boring. So, how do you plan to avoid this boring grind in GW2?

A: One thing we are fighting hardest against is grind. We don’t want the player to ever have to grind and do something they don’t want to do to progress in the game. As mentioned before, we have a wide variety of things we can do. If you are really in story then you can follow your personal story. If you want to experience events with all the people you have the DE, you can do PvP all the way through the game. At any point of the game you will have a choice of picking whatever you want to do and that’s how we fight grind.

Well, I suppose we’re not "grinding" for stuff now - right?

Q: You said you want to make GW2 a lot like a single player RPG game. If I am a solo player and I’d like to play alone, how far into the game can I get without grouping with other guys?

A: We want the vast majority of the time you play in-game to be available to a solo player, completed by a solo player. We don’t want you to feel punished because you don’t have friends to run around with every time. That said, we do have a lot of content that is group oriented like there are certain very difficult events that will require a group with good team work to get through. Similarly, dungeons will be group oriented. But as a single player I wouldn’t be worried about not being able to get through content, you should be able to get through most everything.

Really?? Hmmm... last I checked, many ppl were complaining about not being able to complete their personal story solo due to one issue or another...

: I know you guys are focused on finishing the original game but I would like to know how are you going to handle the character progress after the release? Is the original game going to have some cap set on items/attributes, just like in GW1, or will we be growing in power as the content is added (DLC, expansions) and the maximum level will increase?

A: So, the maximum level in GW2 will be level 80 on the initial release of the game. And I’m sure as we add expansion content we’re going to add more progression and add more levels to the game. However right now we are really focused on getting the release of Guild Wars 2, for core game to be done right, and we are putting all our effort into getting that put together.

And we’re not really thinking that much about what we’re going to do with expansions yet. We want to get the core GW 2 game amazing. And when we get that done, we will release it and we will sit down to figure out our plans for how are we going to tackle expansions from there.

I’m not sure where it states here vertical progression or they were going to add more armour... and OBVIOUSLY you’re going to progress in the game at some extent - everyone should remain at lvl 1??? People are supposed to progress in this game on the same plane, ergo, horizontal progression, as their surroundings and not become more - equal foothold. This is not the case and that is what upsets many ppl. If ppl wanted to play vertical progression based games, they can play rift, wow, tera, etc...

So I guess that everyone is wrong here and there were no world drop nerfs, vertical progression was already promised to us, etc... So how is it so many ppl here are delusional thinking otherwise? I guess ppl were delusional as well in D3 when the devs there did the exact same thing with the drop nerfs - or maybe they didn’t and everyone there was delusional as well...

Well, if it’s any consolation, SWTOR has just as many bugs now as it did when it first launched. AND they had a number of updates/xpacs whatever they’re calling them, AND they have a store AND it’s boring as all hell. At least this game isn’t boring - right?

And ppl please stop asking for stuff and for it to be fixed. The last time something like THAT happened, the open world drops got nerfed, um, I mean "corrected." We got a new dungeon called fractals and only there, via some mystical reasons, you can get most, uh, I mean some of the best, stuff in game. Every time we ask for something it reminds me of that game called "Corrupt-A-Wish." You know, for instance:

I wish for X-ray vision. - Granted...but it only works on the elderly.

I wish for a puppy. - Granted, but after you placed your order you had to switch to a fork because the chopstix were too hard to use.

I wish for my own personal teleportation machine. - Granted, but it has a 1 hour cooldown and cannot be used inside instances and can only teleport you to Mitt Romney’s basement.

;)

Look at the positive for a moment. Sure this game is in the crapper now but in a year or so, ANet will realize their mistake, or not, very much like blizz did with D3 and start to make some positive changes. Either that, or it will just become another Warhammer Online, SWTOR, Tera Online, etc... you get my point

And yet, for some reason, I feel that you will still be here posting about it. ;-)

Perhaps, unless this game fades into oblivion like so many before it. I try to keep a current rotation of at least 3 games at any one time so perhaps I’ll be here - who’s to say...?

I must be mistaken as well when the very best next tier of armour and weaps, which NCSoft/ANet LIED TO ALL OF US and said this WOULD NEVER HAPPEN, can ONLY BE FOUND in the new dungeon - right??

You did catch the part where they said that there are other ways to get the new armor, they didn’t release those yet because they were still half baked, and in retrospect this was a big mistake... right?

They’ve lied to us already, their credibility is now crap. They’re going to have to do something MAJOR to regain public trust. But then again, NCsoft/ANet have a long history of lying to their player base and creating huge problems - I thought that maybe this time would be different. But I guess they’re trying to be like The Kiss of Death, i.e., EA, and Actiblizz.

GW2 is better than GW1 in almost every way. Stop letting nostalgia color your perception so heavily.

mmmhmmm - you’re absolutely correct. Nerfing all the drops and forcing players into one type of niche to garner decent gear is just about better in all ways.

This isn’t even remotely true.

There are 4-6 ways to get "Decent gear" right off the top of my head, and more that I’m sure I haven’t even discovered or used.

Exotics from:

Karma
Crafting
WvW
Dungeons
Drops
Mystic Forge

Look at how incredibly niche that is! Gods there’s only 6 solid ways to get a full set of exotic gear. It must be *impossible* to get decent gear!

You’re just sucked into your own confirmation bias and WANT to hate on the game. So you do mental gymnastics to let you do so.

To the poster above me: The more people that buy a game, and the more popular it is, the higher % of players that will be dissatisfied with it. More population = higher number of people who don’t like something, it’s just a numbers thing.

Not to mention there are people who just like to hate things in a hipster like fashion just because.

Gee, I’m sorry. I and all the rest of the crap tons of posts on these forums and other gaming forums, yes, gw2 players play other games and have posted the kind of crap the devs pulled here over there, must all be wrong and hallucinating. The zone drops are exactly the same without any changes - correct?? I must be mistaken as well when the very best next tier of armour and weaps, which NCSoft/ANet LIED TO ALL OF US and said this WOULD NEVER HAPPEN, can ONLY BE FOUND in the new dungeon - right?? Or am I, and with the majority of ppl complaining about this, just wrong?? If so, please tell me and everyone else what we are missing. Thanks in advance

P.S. DR must be our imagination as well when using the mystic forge and in other areas of the game - correct??

Communication with the community

Hey guys,

I have been to these forums since the day 1 it came out. At the beginning I saw A LOT of feedback from the devs and community managers to different threads regarding pretty much any aspect of the game. I loved that because it really felt like the devs are reading the feedbacks and really want us to help them make the game better. That was such a refreshing thing compared to what I experienced in SWTOR.

And also I remember the quality of players feedback being much better due to that because players really felt that by providing their feedback they can make a difference.

For past few weeks however, the only interaction we have with devs and community managers is thought thread locks, reminders to "keep this thread flame free" and in some cases notification that either you msg has been deleted and u get one black point or your msg has been moved to different thread.

The only actual replies you can find are to threads like "Hey Anet guys I love you and love this game."...with reply "Hey player X we love you too thanks for your support, see u in game!"

I have yet to see some real quality feedback from the devs in here in past few weeks that would make me feel like my feedback could make a difference again.

Where did they go? Why they dont talk to us anymore? What happened to "community is #1 priority for us"?

Let this be a reminder to you guys working on this game. If you dont show interest in our feedback, there will be no point providing one. And you might think about how come the quality feedback provided by players on these forums went so downhill.

Regards,
Looria

Uh yeah that... well you see, the game launched and ppl spent money. Oh and let’s not forget about all the nerfs and crap that the devs have been doing to "improve" the game. You really think they want to talk to a hostile player base now??? Oh boy, I’m have Déjà vu from my SWTOR days... Funny how history repeats itself in such a small amount of time...

The biggest downside though is how reliant it seems to be on the cash shop in design.

Hmmm... gee, yah think...
