I tell you what, Beard…

You may want to give it a whirl. I, too, used to have 10 points in NM for the survivability. I switched just as an expirement to try out 30% more crit damage for pets. With a Jaguar pet…it’s ridiculous. I mean, just silly. My very first fight during the expiriment yielded pet crits of 6666, 3500, and 6200 all within 3 seconds of each other. I find that I dont really miss the survivability and kill people quite a bit quicker now.

I agree with Nerva. You may even mix in some Shaman gear with it for the HP. I was just trying to help as the point was the money was already spent and the OP didnt want to go through buying gear again.

I have a couple videos posted up on the forums. I am currently the condition damage version of that spec, but Djornak is in full Clerics gear and he has success with it. However, if you are zerg rolling, it wont work as well. If you roll WvW with a larger group I would use your Cleric gear to focus on group support…

If you roll for small skirmish, you probably just need some more practice. It’ll come together. I wish server transfers were free, I’d have ya hop over to HoD and roll with us for a bit.

-30% more crit damage on pet crit
-Master’s bond
-bleed on feline crit
-the 30 BM healing trait

-Use the speed signet, rejuv signet, sick ’em, and entangling roots

-Use a Jaguar

-Use Mango pie as food

See if that gives you the pet damage and the survivability you are looking for. Also, I highly recommend the Dwayna runes for this type of set up…

For the “speed” kills…lock someone in entangling roots and hit F2 + sick ’em.

That’s the difference between a thief video and anyone else’s video. Thieves need fixed. They are quite broken in PvP.

I am with Xsorus on this one. Watch some of the videos I am starting to post up. I use a sword and I likes it. I suppose it would be pretty bad in PvE instances. But I like it the way it is for my WvW skirmishing.

I suppose I should have mentioned that we are both Rangers, too.

Djor is a power/BM build using greatsword and longbow. His gear is a mix of pow/tou/vit.

Turkish is a CD/BM build using shortbow and sword/torch. His gear is a mix of apoth/Shaman.

Alas…who are we kidding, right? The pets do all the work. We are just there as a distraction and to keep the cats focused on earning those badges. =)

I felt the same way. And then I rolled/played a Mesmer and Guardian to 80 and got them full exotics.

I am now back on my Ranger full time…

Hi all! Turkish here.

I put together some basic WvW footage from me roaming by myself. Any feedback you can give me would be great because I am always trying to improve. (With that, “such and such that you fought was a noob” is not helpful =P)

Now, don’t hate on me too much… I am brand new to using fraps and windows movie maker. I will try and get better… I promise.

If received well I will make more videos, including ones with 2 rangers roaming WvW. Djornak and I duo skirmish a LOT.

I don’t think its humanly possible for me to care less about PvP garbage, so I’ve never considered short bow in pvp. could that be the reason no one uses a short bow?

The reasons people think/thought Rangers were awful are that:

A. If you spec anything glass-cannon-ish and stray from a zerg, you will usually be roflstomped.

B. They have no basis for comparison as they had never played another class.

I used to think Rangers had it rough and that I was playing a gimped class. So I rolled a Mesmer and a Guardian, both to level 80, and both to full OJ gear.

That said, I am back on my Ranger,
Appreciating it much more now,
And loving every minute of it.

1. I spend most of my time in WvW and NOT rolling with a zerg.
2. I enjoy not getting torn apart by thieves, so I go quasi-bunker with my spec.
3. I enjoy killing people, so I need to be able to hurt them somehow.
4. The last statement of Jazenn’s statement is correct.

Djornak and I roll survival type BM builds. We both meet a good deal of success. He is build for power with mostle Clerics and Soldiers gear while I am built for conditions with mostly Apothecary and Shaman gear. Both seem to be fun and viable. (Especially since we are just making pretty colors while the pets do the dirty work!)

I had myself a nice little duel last night with probably the same P/D thief. We fought for about 5 minutes, bowed to each other, and went our separate ways. Twas a fun stalemate!

Greetings, salutations, and all that jazz! Turkish Krul here. My cohort (Djornak) and I have newly transferred to Henge to get away from overpopulated zerg-fest WvW of larger servers. Now, before you start in with the “But…but!” let me assure you, the “zerging” you see here on Henge is nothing of the scope you will find on the higher ranking servers. It is awful. Groups of 20+ everywhere you go. Giant battles everywhere. Non-stop huge fights with intense action!

Now, for those of you who did NOT just alt+tab and start your transfer to a large server, allow me to continue. That type of huge scale zerg vs. zerg is not what we enjoy to do. We enjoy small skirmish, skill based, tactical encounters. (Don’t worry you karma hungry fiends, we take flags, supply camps, and keeps too) We pride ourselves on roaming the different borderlands and the Eternal Battleground assisting where needed, picking fights where we so choose, and most importantly: deporting those who would dare have a name that cons red to us.

The two of us work weekdays, and on 3rd shift, so for the time being the only time you would see anyone online would be 0800-1200 ish PT during the week. We are family men and worker bees. We’ve got stuff to do. On our days off (Fri-Sat) we spend almost 100% of our time (at night)in WvW rocking and rolling.

So, even if only to join us during 3rd shift on those nights, if you think what we do sounds like fun, hit me up (you can be in multiple guilds so why not?). I’d be happy to have you tag along and see what we’re about! However, bring your -A- game. If you can’t keep up, or struggle to perform, we reserve the right to help you until you are the skirmish PvPer you were meant to be. (or mock you endlessly)

Oh no, I assure you, I am (and have been since launch) on Dragonbrand.

It is not just our zergs that I am talking about. It is all zergs. Ours, theirs, it doesn’t matter. Even at 3 in the morning FA and CD have zergs freaking everywhere. I don’t like it.

I saw some of you guys running around last time I was out and about. Hi! =)

That said. I am already in UhOh. Very successful, lots of communication, strong presence in WvW. I have no guild issues. The guild is great. I have server issues. Dragonbrand is just to darned crowded for my taste.

Yeah. Right now It seems that FA, CD, and DB are all completely packed during these play hours. I want to get away from it and one of the reasons for this post is just to put feelers out there to see what people have to say about other servers. I would hate to end up on a server that is completely dead.

Or…we leave to a small server where we can roam and have our skirmishing and tactical fun! =)

Waffler, there are multiple zergs. We’d load into a map and there are crossed swords and commander icons all over the place. We’d try to go to a “quiet” map and hit a supply camp and a group of 20 would show up to defend. This has been happening for the entire last couple weeks. I can’t see it getting any better. I don’t want to play on a server that has WvW queues at 3 in the morning. Too busy for my liking.

Ykyk…that small tactics fight to assist in the overall goal while avoiding the main zerg is what we love doing. The problem is that here lately on Dragonbrand, there is NOWHERE that is safe from at least a 15-20 man zerg. They’re everywhere. Even supply camps are being hit by 20+ people.

Oh I hear ya, ykyk. The problem I am having with zergs is that nowadays on Dragonbrand they are EVERYWHERE! There will always be a zerg or two popping up when a commander puts his tag up, I just want to not have 15 zergs running at any given time. It’s getting too crowded.

An example: The other night, it was 3 in the morning. There were walls down on SM on two different sides. There were 40+ of each server fighting in SM for hours. Some people LOVE that kind of action. I don’t. Too many people.

Running the risk of being “too” populated? It’s 330 AM here too. West Coast it is, then. =)

I have dabbled in the past, but as I said, how much takes place at 3 in the morning US time? I’d consider taking the zergs in WvW for a reason to do something other than WvW.

I wish TOAST <—-lol wasn’t so high up on the list. As the unofficial RP server I would have to imagine that the community there is probably pretty top-notch.

@ Me I’m Not. Correct. They did not reach rank #1 by noob zerging. They reached #1 by professional zerging. It matters none to me. I don’t care how well organized, good or bad, a zerg is. I hate zergs. Period. I want to play where they dont. Zergs ruin the game for me. I know I can not get away from them entirely, as it is WVW. However, the higher you get up in the tiers, the worse it gets. This is how you move up in servers in GW2. You zerg to win. Zerg everywhere all day long. WvW is a battle of numbers, period. I am entirely unconcerned with “winning” each week as it does absolutely NOTHING for me.

Right? We kind of have to make a decision in the next day or so. Trying to gahter all the information I can before making a decision. We normally play at night (US) time as we work 3rd shift. So it helps with the zerginess, but here in the past few weeks, Dragonbrand has turned into a nonstop zerg fest even at 3 in the morning. We liked it nice a quiet-ish with maybe 1 or 2 commanders out and lots of small skirmishes. Now there seems to be 6-8 commanders out even in the wee hours on Dragonbrand. WAY too zergy for our taste.

The post from Kfarb was taken as nothing more as a joke by me. That is how I see the play on those huge servers and is why I want away from them. He couldn’t have been serious…. =/

Salluks, the reason for this change is a friend of mine and I are on the verge of, at least temporarily, quitting the game. We don’t want to. We enjoy WvW when it is small skirmish fights and not zerg trains everywhere. You could be level 20, naked, and traitless and still succeed rolling with a zerg. We hate it. We don’t want to quit, we want a new situation immediately.

That was my initial thought. But the recent announcement of free server transfers ending, some of the lower tiered servers may have died completely, while some of the servers higher up the list (IoJ for example) are misrepresented by their current rankings. IoJ has had a mass exodus from it by a bunch of WvW guilds over the past couple of weeks. This could end up being what I’m looking for, even though they are still ranked 10th (Tier 4).

With the impending termination of free server transfers, I am looking to move to a new server. All I am concerned with is enjoying my WvW. I am currently on Dragonbrand and it is just not working for me.

Zergs.

Oh, holy hell, the zergs. There are zergs everywhere. You can’t run anywhere without running into a group of 20+. I don’t like it. It is mindless and just a bunch of lemmings face-rolling everything. I want to go to a server that has balanced-ish WvW maps without giant zergs sotrming all over the place. I like small skirmishes and tactics, not battles of numbers. I care about who brought the more talented sword, not about who brought more swords. I don’t like loading into a WVW BG to see 12 different sets of crossed swords all over the place.

So. Who out there is on a server with the situation I am looking for? For me, smaller numbers per fight are important. I play for the fun of the WvW fights, not to “win” and try and move up in tiers. Winning does nothing for a server, or for me as a player. Moving up in tiers takes wins, and wins take zergs. It’s not for me.

P.S. With all of that said, I’d also rather not go to a server that is completely dead either. =)

Many people complain about this problem. I happen to like it because the mechanics of it make you “stick” to your target in PvP if he is running from you. To combat getting “stuck” I get in such a groove and I hit escape right before I dodge and it breaks the animation lock.

Omniderad. I have the answers you are looking for. For a couple of months, I ran the setup you are looking for. There are two good ways of being survivable as a Ranger in WvW, and I will discuss two of them here.

First things first, your main gear stats will be healing and vitality, after that you want toughness and either power or condition damage depending on how you want to play. Let’s face it, you only care about survivability, but you’re still going to have to fight, right?

You will want to spec either 0/5/30/30/5 or 0/5/30/5/30. There are benefits and bonuses to each for survivability and it only matters which you prefer. If you spec 0/5/30/30/5 you will use the nature spirit as your elite skill and it can run with you.

If you choose condition damage, I would suggest a mixture of gear that has Apothecary and Shaman stats on it. If you choose power, I would recommend gear with power toughness and vitality mixed in with jewelry of Cleric stats. Use Dwayna runes on the armor.

I would recommend using some combination of sword, torch, dagger, greatsword, short bow, or longbow as they can all help you survive. It’s a matter of preference for you.

You will want to use Mango pies as your food. Use Troll Ungent as your heal. Use the fernhound and some form of bear as your pets. For skills, use protect me, the speed signet, and the rejuv signet.

These things make up the base of being hard to take down in WvW roaming away from the zerg. If you have questions, ask away as I’m sure I missed things.

My Mesmer’s current set up for WvW is Staff switching to scepter + torch.

Your post made me giggle.

A friend of mine says it happens when you try and make a mask look like the hood. However, he also says that when you zone, it fixes and stops bugging into the awesome combo and you just see the hood. Oh how I wish this were not a bug. I live the look of hood+mask. So much face covered while still showing the eyes. It’s why my ranger uses the WvW hat+bandana. I should get a pic of ole Turk up on here.

No, he is right. There are a few different ways to successfully bunker a ranger in WvW.

Also, sarcastically commenting on the damage output of a bunker build seems a little silly to me. Of course the damage isn’t going to be fantastic…you are built to survive, not murder…

However, it IS possible to spec and gear bunker while still having respectable damage if you go the condition route.

I do, and have for over a month now, use a 1h sword in WvW. Once I got comfortable with the “stickiness” of auto attack, I learned to adapt with it. For starters, if/when someone has the notion to run away from me, I really don’t have to do anything but wait for them to realize it isn’t going to happen. The “unresponsiveness” of the auto attack actually keeps me locked on someone AND keep them crippled as they try and move.

Other than that, I rarely get screwed by not being able to dodge or anything any more because I just hit the escape key and dodge roll out or swap weapons. Trying to learn to play with the animation lock actually made me better at using the weapon because instead of waiting to NEED a dodge roll but being locked by my auto attack, I found that I was more mobile in a fight. The result of being “all over the place” actually improved my fight win percentage.

Agreed. If that portion of it were fixed I would probably use a combination of 2 pigs as I really dig the stuff they find. It is all very useful in WvW.
