Now that I as bunker-ish spec as a ranger can be, I take it in the face and then deal with the consequences. If this wont situationally work I will use sword 3 or dagger 4 and hope for the evade.
When I was a full power/precision/crit damage spec/geared bow ranger, I panicked while saying oh my god oh my god over and over again whilest hoping for the best.
There are a couple ways to go about looking at this, and I could argue it either way.
First things first, if you plan on using protect me, I would suggest a Bear of some sort. Using protect me on a weaker pet usually results in them going splat. When choosing what bear to use, I would look at the F2 abilities and decide which best suits your spec and playstyle. For example, I am a poison stacking melee ranger so I use the Murrelow.
Now, for the pet that you swap to, I would recommend using the pet’s abilities to help you determine what best fits you. I would suggest a pet with high damage such as a cat, or a pet with good CC abilities like a dog or some birds. Agains, it comes down to playstyle. Being a melee bunker build myself, I use the Fern Hound for the regen.
As a follow up, when you are part of a zerg group, or in a stand off situation, I would recommend a pet that buffs you and keep it on passive. A red Moa gives Fury, the Jungle Stalker gives might, etc… In the case of lots of people, sending in a pet is suicide for it, so it’s usually best to keep it next to you on passive.

I run with a Murellow as my main pet in PvE and WvW. I will swap out to the Plant dog (named Kindling) if the situation calls for it, but other than that I am always running the my Murellow: “Naked Rat Bear Dog”.
Afterthought: A buddy I run with is also a ranger and mainly uses his Murellow: “Precious”.
My spec is 0/5/30/30/5
I roll around swapping between axe/warhorn and sword/dagger.
My gear stacks vitality and then splits importance between toughness or healing power, and then power or condition damage whichever may be there.
The skills I use are Signet of Renewal, Protect me, Signet of the Wild, and Nature Spirit.
Questions?
I had this happen to me two nights ago. I fought a Guardian 1v1 when we crossed each other out roaming the BG. It was a good long fight that alsted at least a minute, maybe a minute and a half, and when I finally got the upper hand and downed him, he disappeared from the screen as my character was up in the air performing a death blow.
Kind of a cheap move and I would like to see A-net implement a fix for this.
My friend and I both play Rangers and we do just fine. I understand some tweaks are neccessary in certain aspects, but we are still very much playable.
Of course we didn’t always feel this way. We WERE full power/precision/crit damage and WvW made us bust keyboards in anger. So we respecced and regeared ourselves to adapt. Now, we do just fine working as a pair in 2v2 or 2v3 and also hold our own in 1v1s.
I got a PM from Madember. My friend(s) and I are discussing it now trying to decide if uprooting and starting over is the best thing to do at this point. We love a good community and guild team, but would be hesitant to up and move simply to be alone somewhere else helping another guild full of people we don’t get to play with. Is there ANY consistent night team there to speak of at this point, or is it pretty much non existant?
If in an open field battle, or out in a BG where the symbol shows on the map, there is a person with a commander tag who is giving legible instructions and not acting like a tool:
I will follow his lead.
If this is what you are looking for, do it, it will work.
Greetings and saulutations from Dragonbrand.
I find it interesting that I should come across this particular thread just as I was talking to a friend of mine about our current situation. We are 3rd shift workers, and find our only real play time to be from about 11PM through the following morning Sunday through Tuesday. We don’t really have too much holding us to Dragonbrand at the moment, and have been considering a move to a guild PvP community that needs players like us.
Over this last few days we were off work, we managed to accomplish a good amount in WvW late night, as once we log in it’s all we do. Some TC’ers may have noticed a small roam group hitting towers and supply nodes consistently throughout these nights flipping them purple. That would be us. You can’t see our names, but you will know us as the duo of Rangers running laps. Sometimes people end up following and joining in our fun, sometimes it’s just the two of us.
Turkish Krul and Djornak Bjeornsun are our names.
We both fit in very well with a mature RP type community and have even dabbled in it a bit ourselves in previous games. If there are guilds serious about strengthening their presence during 3rd shift, hit me up if you are able to, or reply to this. While we can only help Sun-Tues, and there are only two of us, we consider ourselves a noticable presence in the BGs when we roam. At the very least, the constant flipping of flags, supply camps, and towers has got to be a nuisance to keep up with. ; )
I have only ever primarily run around with entangle as it is so usefull for me as a kiting bow user. However, now that I will be venturing into WvW I have been considering using Become the Leopard for the stealth and sprint as a get away tool.
I roll almost exclusively longbow. I don’t switch to my shortbow unless the situation becomes close quarters or I need to kite something a lot. I spend 90% of my time with a longbow in my hands and I love it. I don’t feel weak at all. To each his own I guess.
You don’t fail at life. breath a sigh of relief…you’re fine. While warriors can do a ton of damage, it is not as high as he stated. Also, a warrior’s insane output of damage is from “hundred blades” which they have to stand still to use.
If you are having a blast as a mesmer, then rerolling would be nuts. Enjoy!
