Update your drivers to the latest beta drivers:

If you still experience those issues, go to Nvidia Control Panel, select Guild Wars 2 profile and disable Ambient Occlusion. The transparent terrain and flickering is caused by that setting being on, normally…
You should google SweetFX, the HDR filter should give you a darker feel

Hi. Had this same problem when I installed my 550 Ti a few weeks ago. My power supply is 500W as well – I thought it might be insufficient even though it meets requirements for this particular card.
However, going into BIOS (Press DELETE when your computer first starts up to get into this menu) and tinkering with fan settings on CPU (setting them higher than they were), as well as cleaning the inside of the computer case of dust using compressed air and a vacuum cleaner (VERY carefully) solved the problem for me and I haven’t had a shut down since. Make sure you get all the dust and lint out of the heatsink (metal grill with fan) over the processor – it really gets stuck in there good!
Also helps to take out your memory modules one by one and blow the dust off them and out of the slots, swap them around a bit too for extra luck
Also, make sure the sides of your PC where the air is getting pumped out are in an open space, not close to a wall or desk as this will also result in overheating. Good luck and hope this helps!
This driver is great! My fps hasn’t really gone up but the game is much smoother, no sudden FPS drops like before and I’ve been able to crank up shadows to Ultra and other settings to Max without compromising on performance, so that’s cool too
The Ambient Occlusion transparent terrain and flashing on/off issue still exists which is disappointing. Can’t wait till AO is functioning correctly – makes the game even more beautiful.

Hi guys
On the odd chance that it might work, I installed DirectX 9.0c (June 2010) again and I’m happy to report that it’s given me a bit more stability and smoothness in some areas of the game. Perhaps it will help you too!
You can download the file from here ( http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ )
Once you’ve done this, create a folder on your desktop (any name will do) and double-click the downloaded file. Extract the files to your newly created folder.
After this, open the folder and double-click DXSETUP.exe and follow the prompts to finish the installation.
Hopefully this will give you a bit more performance like it did for me
Good luck!
I don’t believe it is supported in game but the newest drivers state that they add support for AO through the control panel. However for me, switching it on gives graphical glitches.
Hi there
Hopefully this will help:
Open your nVidia control panel and ensure that Ambient Occlusion is completely disabled for Guild Wars 2. Supposedly those drivers you have add support for AO, but when I turn it on I seem to experience weird glitches like the ones in your video.
I’m not suggesting gear (although a chance to get a nice piece of gear would be cool too). More like random things, like those tiny loot bags with crafting materials, an onion or two, whatever… If you’ve played Rift you will understand what I mean.
I’m not saying I want to amazing loot – just something!
It’d be a cool feeling to get a reward in the form of a chest with a few items for doing a DE… I spent about 10 minutes doing a DE involving killing a troll with a group of people and the troll didn’t even have any loot on him after we downed him. Just got the usual karma, coins and Xp.
Thank you for suggesting I’m crazy, but I’m entitled to suggest things just like every other player who’s posted in this sub-forum!
Can we get a big old chest of random cool loot after completing a dynamic event? Just makes it more exciting to finish one and have a little chest pop up on the screen afterwards, like a certain other game
Is this something you devs would consider?
Am using Nvidia, with ambient occlusion turned off in the CP :-/
Shadows flicker on and off in Sparkfly Fen, randomly, every now and then. It’s very annoying :P
Basically every shadow on screen disappears for about half a second, resulting in a sort of flashing effect on the screen…
Including a screenshot of the location, the red circle indicates the regions where this occurs, haven’t explored more of the zone – so I can’t tell you if it happens everywhere in this zone.
Not sure if it’s only me… This is the only zone I’ve experienced this in.
I’m using an nvidia GTX 550Ti card and an AMD Athlon II X2 processor.
Anybody else getting flickering shadows in Sparkfly Fen? Not constant, but they flicker on and off every 10 seconds or so…
I only get them in this zone, not any of the others I’ve been to. Am I the only one?
Hi guys
Bought myself a new graphics card this weekend for some better performance in-game. Was a bit horrified to find that my max FPS had gone up quite a lot but my game was stuttering every now and then, and things just felt less smooth than on my old card.
Anyway, I found this to be a great help and my game is running like butter now:
1. Download Driver Sweeper ( http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4266-driver-sweeper.html )
2. Uninstall all current nvidia items (Graphics Driver, HD Audio, PhysX, Update, 3D Vision etc) listed underneath “Programs and Features” / “Add or Remove Programs” in your Windows Control Panel. This may take a few restarts to do!
3. After you’ve removed all Nvidia software through the control panel, restart your PC again.
4. Now, run Driver Sweeper (as Administrator by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting “Run as Administrator”). Tick the boxes for “NVIDIA – Chipset”, “NVIDIA – Display” and “NVIDIA – PhysX”, then click analyse. After you’ve done this, you’ll see that Driver Sweeper lists all the leftover Nvidia stuff on your PC.
5. Tick all the boxes EXCEPT those that are of type “Registry” – so basically tick the boxes that relate to “File” and “Directory”. A good rule of thumb is NEVER to use any software to alter your registry – it can cause LOTS of problems that can only be solved by re-installing your OS from scratch. So rather just leave registry stuff alone at all costs.
6. Once you’ve ticked all the boxes that aren’t type “Registry”, click CLEAN and wait for it to complete.
7. Now, install the latest nvidia drivers (306.23) and restart your PC.
8. Launch Guild Wars 2 and enjoy!
PS. Use this at your own risk, I’m merely relaying my own experience of doing this. I found this helped me a great deal, and my game is running beautifully now.
Good luck!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This game is a work of art and I truly treasure being able to play it
