So, currently the only way to get Ascended armor is through drops, or a painstaking crafting exercise. Couldn’t there be alternative ways?
Maybe if you could “Upgrade” dungeon equipment to ascended by a simple Mystic Forge recipe:
Dungeon Armor Piece + Appropriate Gift of … + 250 Bloodstone Dust + 10-25 Dark Matter = Appropriately Statted Ascended Armorpiece
For example, to create Zojja’s Breastplate (Or maybe just the same skin but with ascended stats), you could for example go with Flame Legion Chestplate:
Flame Legion Chestplate + Gift of Baelfire + 250 Bloodstone Dust + 25 Dark Matter = Flame Legion Chestplate (Ascended)/Zojja’s Chestplate
Overall, this would also serve to work as a sink for all that Bloodstone Dust you accumulate through dungeons. Alternatively, you could use Empyreal Fragments as well.

That would make it too easy, Ascended armor was introduced because Exotic was too easy to get, you wanna back track now?
Right now I’m looking at over a month or two (probably more) to get a full set of ascended armor.
With your suggestion I’d get it this afternoon, probably, and I mean the whole set.
It’s not like you HAVE to get it, the stats increment is marginal I’ve already beat a warrior with a legendary+ascended armor in WvW on a random 1v1 encounter with guess what? A Ranger, a class that is often said to be useless with an average of less 30% damage on the weapons.
Ascended Armors are currently useless. All these mats for… 2 points ? LOL

I don’t ask for better stats, but the investment is currently worthless. If ascended gear have side bonuses to compensate, it will increase their interest.

AR slot?
The reason why it costs all those mats is because most of those mats used to be useless.
I remember selling silk scrap to NPCs simply because in the TP I’d lose money with the listing fee.
Ascended armor is spouse to be a long term objective, something you make over months.
And the stats are minimal so it doesn’t “break” the game specially WvW.
AR slot is a possibility. If Arena.net unlock higher levels of Fractals, they can require more agony resistance. It could be an “account bound AR slot” seeing that fractals level is account bound. Weapons always have AR slot available (just an update of current ascended weapons).
When you reach a specific level of fractal, a new AR slot is considered on armor.
50 : 1 slot
60 : 2 slot
70 : 3 slot
80 : 4 slot
90 : 5 slot
100 : 6 slot
It can be on any armor item, but if you only reach level 70 fractals, only 3 slots are considered, the bonus of the other armor items isn’t considered (similar to dynamic level).
Maybe Dean. Having the ascended armor just for making some materials more useful seems too little for me. I thought the Ascended armor should be something like aiming for the future of armors in the game, like an armor progression. Given the very “grindy” nature of crafting those armors (this is a nice grind in my opinion, by the way, I love doing the God’s Temples events), I believe it deserved something like two upgrade slots per piece. Or maybe a 4th stat with lower value (e.g, for the helm: +47, +34, +34, +22). Or maybe an inherent “set” bonus like the Runes, weaker than the Runes of course, that would give you some bonus the more pieces of the ascended armor you wear.
Anyway…, that said, I really don’t wish ANet turns this game into a gear grind fest like WoW. I really like the fact that Exotics and Ascended are the top gear on this game and the rest is just player skill. I wish they keep it that way.

Why not just make Agony Resist like the new Magic Find then? Make the new Agony Resist dusts work the same way as the Magic Find dusts and leave the itemisation flat like it should be.
Ascended gear wasn’t needed. What was needed was full legendary gear and a larger assortment of legendary skins. Legendaries were a good, long term goal. Ascended just isn’t worth the effort.
