Thief Counter Suggestions
Not sure of your exact meaning there Rizzy… Didn’t ask for more skills, or to be able to kill anything easier, I asked for a slight nerf in existing skills of another class that basically is able to engage 3 or 4 other players, disappear, heal, then re-engage. How about, think, consider, then post?
Thought, considered & this is the post. Thieves are not OP at all. They are average in PvE, a bit annoying in WvW & an easy kill in PvP. If you’re next question is if I play a thief, than the answer is no not anymore. They already got nerfed by increasing their revealed time I don’t see why Thieves should get another nerf towards their stealth ability.
Put in a PvP/PvE skill split before we start nerfing professions that aren’t yet on par with the Warrior, please. -1
I see what you’re saying there ace… I am speaking of WvW and did not think of it in PvP or PvE arenas; however, any class (in WvW) where an individual can keep re-engaging over and over is ridiculous. I just watched such a match from a tower. 1 Necro, 1 War, and 1 Ele all attacking 1 Thief. For ~8 minutes, they all battled 3 v 1. No one died; the thief just kept disappearing, then healing, then re-engaging. Possibly applying such a nerf as mentioned previously only in WvW areas would be more appropriate?

So, in this sentence, are you saying this like puhleeeeaaasse? If so, are you saying that the Thief is not on par with the Warrior, as in the Warrior is more powerful than a thief as it exists today?
either remove stealth or remove the thiefs mobiliy. Or cut its damage by 90%.

General PvE, especialy while lvl’ing, yup thief(especialy compared to Ele/Engi) is alot easier.
Go do dungeons, A war can do alot more dmg and wistand alot more. Thiefs are getting one of the weakest classes in the game, they are annoying in wvw, idd, but not op.
I suggest all Mesmers shouldn’t be able to use clones, rly annoying, eles shouldn’t be able to be a Cannon(they aren’t glass at all), necros shouldn’t have marks/wells or pets, those are really annoying, the same with the ranger pet and it’s aoe’s. Guardians shouldn’t take a hour to kill, wariors should do less dmg in general PvE, engis turrets are really annoying aswell, so are his mines and most of it’s kits, remove them.
but still always the thief, People don’t have a problem with Spies in Tf2, they have alot more stealth, transform into allies and 1-shot people, The GW2 thief has very limited stealth, can’t turn into allies and don’t 1-shot most people(if you are glass cannon in WvW, well yeah)
I’dd say the problem lies with: the people who don’t play thiefs and A-net for giving into these people.

- The group lacks CC
- The group consists of mostly upleveled characters

I see it like this… as an ele, what if i was able to create an invulnerable shield, then I would heal while my invulnerable shield was up, then, my Invulnerable shield would recharge fairly quickly (based on skill allotment ofc), but until it did, i had a mini-invulnerable shield to keep me alive, allowing only a few seconds of dmg before I could then reuse my invulnerable shield. Would that be okay?

a necro ele and warrior not able to kill a thief in 8 mins… well sorry but those ppl must suck really hard, both ele and necro have a LOT of aoe’s, and warriors some good aoe’s too, which is one of the best counters to thieves using stealth a lot, he goes stealth, well spam that aoe around the area where he did and you are sure to hit him and kill him, so yeah you cant really do anything about ppl being stupid, stealth is not invincibility, oh and have the necro throw tons of condition on him, as those will keep ticking while he is in stealth too, unless he ahve that trait that heals him but a necro should still b able to throw enough out that it will take a while before they all get cleansed in his stealth

Not true at all, I’ve watched it plenty of times, I’ll try to record the next one.
However; couple questions. So, do you think that it’s ok that a group has to be organized to take down a single character? I did not lack CC skills in my run-ins, however; i also did not skill to have inordinate amounts of them either; meaning, I did not try to just be a thief killer. You’re not suggesting that are you? The group did not consist of mostly up-leveled characters, only way i could prove that i guess would be to try and catch one on video, I’ll give that a shot.

I hear ya, perhaps not the best example… but since you can’t target them, then all the thief need do is move a slight distance away and they can’t be hurt, then, they move back in after healing. correct?

The only dialogue or rather monologue you’re trying to achieve is how you feel justified on nerfing another class because your skill level isn’t on par with another player.
I’ve been killed by really good Thieves who know how to cut down my mobility as an ele.
Am I complaining about Infiltrator’s strike?
No because those good thieves, know which skills a D/D ELE uses that really hurts and wait for me to use that when I’m at my most vunerable before coming in for the kill.
Does that mean Infiltrator’s strike is OP?
HELL NO.
I aint by any means a “Pro Ele” but I’m smart enough to counter gimmicky builds that people use like using SHOCKING AURA when I get immobilized and cant move so my attacker if hes dumb enough to Melee me with a BACKSTAB gets stunned himself.

Also, as soon as I get to where I can wear decent armor and have the skills, my plan is to do wvw with mine.
If it took an elementalist, a necromancer and a warrior 8 minutes to fight a thief off then those three are either incredibly bad and refused to bring any CC, AoE or damaging skills or the thief is actually the best player in the world at anything.
1 stun is all it should have taken for a build of those 3 professions to take out a thief, even if they where upleveled 1 stun would probably have been enough.
But sure, nerf thief even more however you also have to nerf everyone elses ability to go 1vX against bad players as well, so what nerfs do you want for the other 7 professions?

I see it like this… as an ele, what if i was able to create an invulnerable shield, then I would heal while my invulnerable shield was up, then, my Invulnerable shield would recharge fairly quickly (based on skill allotment ofc), but until it did, i had a mini-invulnerable shield to keep me alive, allowing only a few seconds of dmg before I could then reuse my invulnerable shield. Would that be okay?
Oh come on. Stealth is not the same as invulnerability, by far. How about you try playing your thief outside of PvE?
I hear ya, perhaps not the best example… but since you can’t target them, then all the thief need do is move a slight distance away and they can’t be hurt, then, they move back in after healing. correct?
Also, as soon as I get to where I can wear decent armor and have the skills, my plan is to do wvw with mine.
Oh yes if you get past the level 11 with your magical 1 trait point which somehow cuts down the recharge time of Hide in Shadows to less than 30 Seconds

And seriously, if the dialogue moves to convince me that it’s a non-sensical idea, I’m ok with that.

Stealth is a survival mechanic thieves.
Much like Water attunement is for Eles.
Whats the difference between the 2?
You can change to Water Attunement every 7 seconds if you specced for and you can stealth every 3 seconds after opening an attack.
If you’re dying to Cloak and Dagger attacks only, seriously I need to do an obligatory laugh.
The moment a thief goes out of stealth as a D/D Ele you have SO MANY OPTIONS to CC them.

Updraft for when he comes close to Cloak and dagger.

Air is your closer and guarentees a thief cant smack you with CnD when you use shocking aura and switch to earth which cripples and damage them apon attunement change when you start to bleed them.
Air attunement should be the attunement you stay on OOC.

Well, i’m not necessarily opening with fire, it depends on what I’m doing when it happens… so lets say, I am running with Air toward a tower our zerg may be attacking. We do the norm, build the siege etc., then I switch to fire to start the Might. Then I’m attacked in Fire so I’d do the 2-4. then start switching. Am I correct in assuming that you’d go straight to air, not working within current attunement first? I don’t normally switch to fire first, I was going off of your previous statement as to what 2-4 was for. Do you normally jump to Air regardless of current attunement?
This thread seems to fall more under Player’s helping player’s sub-forum. If you want, post questions/answers on the thread I made awhile back. That or read through and maybe you’ll learn a thing or 2. I used to hate warrior and thought they were “op” back in like november. The 100b frenzy was simply too much for me. Practice and after making my own warrior and learning more about it, I found out the opposite. Warriors were horribly slow and when it came to mobility/dodging they were down right pitiful.
I’d suggest rolling a thief, go to the mists (spvp) and look/use every skill. Learn how they work and what they do internally. After that, look up some of the skills on the gw2 wiki. Some skills have tricks and/or bugs so it helps to know what you’re expecting when player x uses said skill.
Can a thief keep spamming stealth? Sure but the moment they do any direct damage they are revealed for 4 seconds. Also while they’re invisible there are methods to tracking them (not just swinging 1 until the chain starts up). AoE skills that pulse are the best at this (wells, traps, things like meteor or barrage).

I don’t know if i can move the conversation; however, am not inclined to do so as there were people who seemed personally insulted by the original suggestion and I’m not going to give in to such draconian methods. I just watched such a match from a tower. 1 Necro, 1 War, and 1 Ele all attacking 1 Thief. For ~8 minutes, they all battled 3 v 1. No one died; the thief just kept disappearing, then healing, then re-engaging. Possibly applying such a nerf as mentioned previously only in WvW areas would be more appropriate?

Thieves are very easy to kill when outnumbered. Like really really easy. Out of a necro, a warrior, and especially an ele, how did not one of them bring any cc?
Thieves in 1v1 are excellent with their burst and also their endurance regen/gain). Stealth is a thief’s version of protection, its the only real protection a thief gets. No reliable or perma regen (like guardian or ele), no potential to get protection (lyssa runes don’t count, thats not a thief thing thats a rune thing), only 1 stability from an elite skill, and no retaliation or aegis. Stealth is our boon, a very special one with many drawbacks. People need to understand why thieves get stealth so well, and also understand invisible =/= invincible.
Truthfully, a d/d ele can do everything a thief can (excluding stealth) and more. Great burst, great sustain, superior mobility, and amazing utility. Has anyone here, who thinks thieves need yet another nerf, tried to 1v1 a good d/d ele? Then come back here and share your horror story.
