How to pronounce Tequatl
lucky for me, i come from a place where words are pronounced and spelled the way they are written
unlike english where they’re written one way, pronounced another, and spelled a third, i just read things the way they’re written…
kat tru d wuords sou tu spik
cut through the words so to speak
I dont know what is your langueage( perhaps czech? )but to be fair lot of people thinks they speak words how they write them :-) But somene with absolutely different language (for example English and czech) can see it as totaly different writing and reading.
But as far as i know english is language that is differently written and spelled even for natives.
But maybe i am wrong, feel free to correct me americans, britons, irish and others :-)

The point is, I believe, that English as a language is phonetically deep, i.e., there isn’t any simple relation between how a word is written and pronounced, making it a necessity to use some kind of extended code when discussing phonology.
As an example, the ‘ge’ in get (get) does not represent the same sound as the ‘ge’ in George (jôrj) which does not represent the same sound as the ‘ge’ in germ (jûrm). Rather contrived, if you ask me.
In contrast, some other languages do have a one-to-one correspondence between a written symbol and the phoneme it represents, making it trivial to see how a word is pronounced.
As for the actual topic, everyone I know just calls her Teq.
I just called him the other name for the lady reproductive part, it starts with a T. Lol
EDIT: Because I can’t say the V word, how stupid.
As for the actual topic, everyone I know just calls her Teq.
It is a girl? I thought it is a boy.

“It has reinforcements. Slay them!”
“It’s dropping something from its wings. Look out!”
“Get back. It’s about to breathe. Stay out of its way!”
Based on the NPC chatter, it appears it’s an it.

In the german version Tequatl is a male. “Tequatl der Sonnenlose”
I think in the french version too. “Tequatl le Sans-soleil”
I’m not a language expert, so I’m interested to know: if something has no defined gender, what would you use instead?
Yeah, I know. The Hylek in Tyria have weird names and give things weird sounding names.
Their naming conventions and art design have Aztec motifs.
Anet Lore and Continuity Designer Ree Soesbee pronounces it as such
Well it looks Aztec/Mayan/South American in spelling.
Common pronunciation of Aztec words break down the name as thus:
Te – “teh” sometimes “tee”
qu – “kay” or “kuh”
alt – “tul”
So…. Teh-kuh-tul?
But the developers can say it how ever they please since they made it.
Actually Hylek names are inspired just by Nahuatl (the language spoken by the Aztecs). Quechua (the language of the Inca) and Mayan sound quite different and not at all like the Hylek names.
From the wiki page: "The Nahuatl word “tecuani” means “biter”, “wild beast”, or “poisonous” according to how it is used; “coatl” means snake. The boss’ name is similar to Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, a major deity in the Mesoamerican pantheon".

You mean TQ’s been neutered?!?!?!?!?!?
Seriously, tho… I pronounce it Tech Wattle unless I’m in a hurry, then it’s simply TQ.

The trend I dubbed Tequatl way back:
“Tequilla the Sunshine” and we all asumed teq is a girl.
- Spends more time picking clothes in the wardrobe than in stealth.

I choose to believe the final L is not pronounced, but instead the “tl” together signifies a hard/ejective T sound, for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nahuatl (click the “listen” link near the top).
Of course, I have no particular reason to believe this except that it seems awesome.
Nahuatl words as we see them in English are the result of Spanish attempts to spell them phonetically according to the rules of Spanish pronunciation. Though the actual pronunciation may be slightly different, pronouncing these words in accordance with the rules of Spanish is probably the best practice.
So Tequatl is
Tay KWA till or
Teh KWA till
With emphasis on the second syllable..
Quetzalcoatl would be:
Kates all KWA till or
Kets all KWA till
Tequila Dwagon. De daa dee da doo da da daar
Tee-quat-tle
= Teakettle

Hope it’s not too late to chime in, but it’s pronounced “teh-KWAHT-ul.” Kind of rhymes with “heck bottle,” with the accent on the “BOT.”
That’s how we say it in-house and how we have NPCs say it in-game through VO.
Oh my you guys are a hoot. This made my day.

Sorry to say that but Tequila Sunrise is better and I’ll stick to it
i call him “you know, the dragon thats stronger then zhaitan after the patch”
He was always stronger than Zhiatain… Zhiatain is the most anti-climatic boss in game.
My assumption was that the name derived from a combination of the Aztech city-state Tenochtitlan and the Meso-American deity Quetzalcoatl, making the correct pronunciation “Tay – kwa – tul”.
HOWEVER, as a proper name, the rule is that both spelling and pronunciation are dictated by the bearer of that name, and deemed correct, no matter how odd it may seem.
Given that premise, I have it on good authority that Tequatl himself (herself?) pronounces it “Rrrrrrrrrroooooaaaaaaarrrrr!!!!”
Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

npc speaks it if you watch the cut scene etc…
Teh-qwaht-uhl
Actually, the spelling and pronunciation remind me of the Mayans.
But we just call him tequila sunrise.
I like this, a lot. Haha.

It’s another Tequatl sunrise
Flyin’ slowly ‘cross the sky, said goodbye
He was just a hired dragon
Workin’ on the frogs he planned to fry
The days go by
Ev’ry night when the sun goes down
Somethin’ in the water outside town
Soon to be burnin’ down
She wasn’t just another dragon
Tequatl couldn’t keep from comin’ on
It’s been so long
Oh, and it’s a hollow feelin’ when
It comes down to eatin’ friends
It never ends
Throw another shot of poison
Wonder why the lady dragons never come
You just get numb
It’s another Tequatl sunrise, this old world
still looks the same,
Until today, mm…

Listen to the NPCs around where the boss occurs. They pronounce it a few times, especially when Tequatl rises.
Teh (soft e, not hard e like OP)-Kuah-Tell
And as Quartktastic said, the hylek names are based off mesoamerican (not just Mayan, but Incan and Aztec too) naming systems. Tequatl as well.
Fun fact: Tequatl in hylek means “One in the Darkness” iirc; “the Sunless” is the hylek name for Risen. In other words his name basically means “Risen One in the Darkness”
The only problem with that is that it doesn’t make sense given how mesoamerican words are pronounced.
It oughta be Te-kah-tull so far as I understand, for the same reason you wouldn’t say Kweh-tzull-kwah-tull for Quetzacoatl.
Yes, but have you forgotten how badly they mispronounce “jotun?”

Tesquirtle ?
When in home server you can call it as you want.
When in overflow its name is Controlaltdel.
I hate all the stupid kitten cutesy nicknames for him. His name isn’t hard, just type it. Or Teq if you’re really into the whole brevity thing.
You don’t see people talking about the personal story endboss as Zhaitty, Zatty, Zohan, Zubar, Zagnut, or any idiotic crap like that, why can’t people just say TEQUATL.
