Honestly, i know all mmo’s grinding is necessary, but 20 days of daily doing for an amulet, 25 days for a ring where you can get it for 10 fractal dailies. Am i the only one not happy with this?

I play 4-6 hours a day, i finish the daily achievment in 10-15 minutes. I need to sit and wait for it now?

IMO maybe 2 laurels a day, 15 monthly sounds more than sufficient for me.

Any opinions?

They want it to take longer than it does for exotics. Apparently they want it to take a month per piece. The fact that it takes less to get it from a method that not only is more difficult, but also may give you a ring with stats you don’t prefer, is something to think about, but it’s not that bad.

Does the monthly really only give 10, though? I was thinking it’d give 15-20. Where have the devs said this? The monthly for this month wasn’t supposed to give any laurels.

Their updates are the best I’ve seen in the MMO world. What other game gives free monthly updates? None that I can think of besides maybe Eve Online(but thats also p2p). They’re giving you free content. Every month. And all you can do is complain that you want more. With most games you would have to pay for the updates in the form on expansion packs and DLCs, but Anet is giving you them for free. Be happy.

It’s a purely business decision. If they didn’t update the game on a regular basis to keep it fresh and interesting they would lose players. Lost players means less people buying gems and a lower game population is less likely to attract new customers to buy the game and gems.

With that in mind, I really don’t see what the problem is with how we get laurels. Ya, it sucks that it will take a very long time to get the fancy minis or the cat potion, but the other gear is easy to get and making it any more instant gratification’y would just cause everyone to get bored again. It’s grind, but at least you know exactly where the finish line is and don’t have to rely on bogus RNG systems to make it across. Just enjoy the new shiny’s and the much more interesting daily system.

This is one reason I don’t like daily formats. I’m also not convinced that it works well for casuals, since casuals are likely to skip days entirely or cluster their playtime on one particular day (say, a day off).

What other game gives free monthly updates?

I don’t know that I would count the holiday events in there; plenty of other MMOs do that, but you don’t seem to give them any credit for it.

And the post above mine has the best explanation for why regular updates will continue in this game; it’s vital to sustaining gem sales.

Why does it matter if it’s vital to sustaining gem sales? It’s free content that benefits the playerbase and keeps the game interesting. If a few people want to spot them some money, then that’s all the better – it keeps the company running and funds future updates. Arenanet isn’t some large, greedy company. Hell, they have (or had?) a whopping TWO people working on balance.

Well of course it’s a business decision, that’s what Arenanet is, a business. That doesn’t change the fact that people are greedy and when they give us something new they just complain that it’s not good enough. Personally I love the new laural system, it gives me even more incentive to log on everyday even if its only to do my daily.

And yea I didn’t really think about the holiday updates, other MMOs do those as well.

Afaik the devs have not stated how many laurels the monthly will award. The “10” number being tossed around may be an extrapolation based on dailies giving 1 karma jug and monthlies giving 10 karma jugs

If they don’t keep the content flowing, general player interest wanes and fewer charitable fellows are left around to donate.

It’s in their own self-interest to continue updating the content. Why should I laud them for pursuing their own self-interest?

Arenanet isn’t some large, greedy company.

Ha. Is this supposed to be like “capitalism is bad” until it’s some party you sympathize with practicing it, like letting Hollywood off for getting an increased tax break on the back of the American middle class?

Yeah they’re greedy, and they’ve got even greedier owners, who in turn are owned by even greedier people.

If they wanted a larger class balance team, they could surely appropriate more personnel to it; no doubt they concluded that two people is all the job requires (and outside of class specific bug fixes, they’re probably right).

Their updates are the best I’ve seen in the MMO world. What other game gives free monthly updates?

Er….every F2P MMO ever made updates on a regular basis in order to keep its players active. It’s not like it’s a newfangled concept.

Granted, they don’t all update monthly, but I’ve played MMOs before whose patches are usually just as large as (or are even larger than) GW2’s, and a hell of a lot less buggy to boot.

The main reason I’m here instead of there is because at some point I discovered GW1 and fell in love with it, and I want GW2 to become the new filler of that time slot for years to come. But it has some improvements yet to make before I’d say that it merits truly abundant and heaping piles of praise. And I think the devs know this, which is why these upcoming patches are so focused on “strengthening the core game”.

But coming from that background, I don’t actually see how people can argue that free monthly updates are such a huge deal. Heck, I’ve played some indie online games that update darn-near weekly, always for free. Maybe I’m just spoiled and so I don’t really look at the frequency of the content as meaning much. Instead I look at the quality of the content offered, and I have to say that with every patch, the game has improved….but it’s also taken steps backwards as well.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?

About the number of this laurels…1 , 2, 3 i don’t care.It requires 0 effort to complete the daily , and if i can complete it without being forced to do an istance , or get involved in PvE stuff that i strongly dislike , any kind of reward is welcome even in low quantity.

People that complain about having to “farm” the daily (really? you don’t normally kill and gather stuff while playing?) for “months” to get yada yada item, have probably never played an actual MMO with all the farming involved.

A certain other game I played “forced” me to do over 100 specific daily quests (go to specific location, kill X of certain mob, gain Y of certain drop type quests) for over 2 months to unlock the shiny stuff. Those daily quests were 3-5 hours of time dedicated to ONLY doing daily quests, every day. And then the shiny stuff still required “laurels” which required you to do dungeons/raids/daily quests for even longer to be able to afford the shinys. Oh, and then that’s for ONE character. If you have 3 or 4, you have to do the daily quests 3 or 4 times…………

GW2 might not be perfect in every way possible but from my point of view it is so much better than so many other games I’ve played and it feels so much more rewarding. Heck, just the fact that I can complete my daily on any character I choose, my exotic-geared lvl 80 or my lvl 26 that actually benefits from doing the events, gathering and killing, is bloody amazing!

Besides, if you could get the Ascended and Legendary gear in 2 hours, then what? Stand around and afk in Lion’s Arch all day because you have “nothing left to do”?
If it doesn’t take time and effort it doesn’t feel as rewarding when you finally get the item you’re aiming for!

I think the laurels are an awesome concept, even if the current rate of acquisition is pretty slow. The laurel vendors have multiple pages of items we could potentially buy, but it takes so long just to get one thing! It’s kind of weird that they have all those bags of crafting mats, gathering tools, and boosters available for 1 laurel each. Who’s going to squander their laurels on those, instead of save up?
Anyway, I know there are going to be more ways to get laurels down the road, as they integrate them into more achievements. Just… too many things that I want right now!! :-P

Yes, the current time gating for getting ascended are completely unreasonable for people that want to have more than one char (or play with builds. or both). Neither current nor future methods should really be account-limited. It only discourages people from buying additional char slots.

The irony of all this is that within that monthly acheivement rotation is the requirement to do fractals dungeons. So if you’re going for the monthly then you might as well do fractals.
Never stepped foot in them since I can’t always stay at the computer long enough to do an entire dungeon. Lot’s of quick afk’s. Still I haven’t completed a monthly since they started requiring dungeons. It’s okay though because I knew this would be a limitation for me.

Copy/paste my answer from another thread:

The best part of this game, bring the worst part of the community. You see, This game is very casual friendly. But part of the “casual” community think that is unfair hardcore players get more rewards because they can invest more time in the game. For me, complaining about that is stupid. If someone can play 10 hours a day, is normal that should receibe more rewards. Sadly, there is no Win-Win situation in this kind of things…

with this, ArenaNet could do two things:

  • Like now: Casual are ok but hardcore complain.
  • Alt friendly: Hardcore are ok but casual complain.

Like the “casual” demography is bigger, the take that option.

You see, it wouldn’t be so much problem if prices were lower. Month per piece is too long even for one char – it means that as soon as you finish equipping your char, a new tier drops in or level cap is raised. And that assuming you won’t even try to go for other rewards.
