That’s actually hard to answer simply because I don’t think fairness is applicable at all. Some guy across town spent all spring in his garden and has a really nice crop of tomatoes. Is that fair to people that love fresh tomatoes and don’t have tomato plants? Fair is irrelevant. I’m not competing with that other guy whether or not he’s under the illusion of competing with me. I spent the time tending my garden without knowing or caring if he existed. How is it unfair if I enjoy fresh tomatoes?

(Side note… I had a hard time typing “garden” thanks to GW2… kept starting out as guard…)

Although you are not competing, the competition exists. Therefore whether you like it or not, you are competing!

A better analogy is this one:

We are all in a Bicycle race (i.g: tour de france). Those who have won a previous race, are entitled to a yellow shirt! The yellow shirt for it’s own shows the prestige of that runner! However, the wearer of the yellow shirt don’t start ahead of the rest, because that would not be fair! Doing so, is creating a handicap for the rest of those in the competition!

Because it is a competition, it should be fair for all, and so all start from the same starting line!

Competition requires participation by all. Otherwise you’re simply trying to show up the neighbors that don’t even know you exist. Just because someone thinks their competing with me doesn’t make it true. If I’m not in the Tour de France, where’s the competition?

Not sure if I do, haven’t looked, don’t care. I hear there are people over 10K anyhow, so I doubt I’d be that high up on the list. Besides, I heard those boards are a comparison as opposed to a competition.

If ANet chose to put me (and everyone) on that list it doesn’t mean I’m actively competing for positioning on the list. You can sign me up for a race, but if I choose to crack open a beer and watch a softball game while you’re running it’s kind of hard to say we were competing in that race.

That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. 99% of the player pop doesn’t give a hoot for this. Because a) it doesn’t matter and b) it’s not a competition. GW1 players did it for the skins and pets (and a few for the titles).

What kind of person makes a competition out of arbitrary points given out for walking from point A to point B…or listening to an npc talk?

The fact that it’s on a “leaderboard” is a farce in and of itself. And I think the players that actually care about it do so simply because it happens to be up there, and not because it’s any indication of merit or skill…because it isn’t.

We might as well all count the change in our couches and form a “leaderboard” out of that. It would be just as trivial.

That’s hardly a fair statement, telling people to buy GW1 and grind the points out. You know as well as I do how much time that involved, time better spent (and more efficiently spent) in GW2.

Points aren’t the problem. The problem is that people are under the illusion of competing with everyone for these points and for some really odd reason allowing the mental aspect of their game play to be affected by that. Strange, eh? I was actually told I’m in a competition because my name apparently is on a list.

Wrong solution. ANet can give GW2 players access to the HoM content through the GW2 interface or just keep the HoM points to 0. That would be simple and just.

Ah yes, the 2nd post (and the mightiest) about the highly controversial increase in points to Guild Wars 1 players who dedicated their feats in the Hall of Monuments.

The players comments against the points can be derived many, many ways.

Just a note that I posted on the first thread about this; GOD WALKING AMONGST MERE MORTALS HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH HOM, DID NOT NEED TO BE ACHIEVED IN ORDER TO MAX YOUR HOM, NOR IS ANY ACHIEVEMENT POINT REWARDED TO PLAYERS WHO ACHIEVED GWAMM So please, keep that out of this argument. It really is a disgrace to us who worked hard for that title to be put down by those who didn’t receive it.

I believe it was upgraded for two reasons, To show appreciation to those who supported ArenaNet and the development of GW2, and also as a marketing ploy to gear more players into a dying GW1 fanbase.

The APs should stay just for the fact that we now get skins and what have you. Take HOM Points out of the Leaderboard and make the otherside happy. End of story.

I fully understand the competitive complaint, but still fail to see how it’s important due to many GW2 APs still yet to be rewarded. But regardless anyone who doesn’t deem its fair that Dedicated fans devoted countless hours and time to the Same Maker should receive the points for rewards is simply upset they didn’t receive them as well. I could not care less about getting the points. What bothers me is the people complaining that we should not have gotten them.

In GW1, some of us purchased the collectors edition. We where given a special emote effect or “glowing hands” when we did emotes. We paid extra for this, a LOT extra, but we where supporting the game that we thought would take off and it did. New players came to the game when the collectors edition was no longer available and complained that it was not fair that those who purchased the collectors edition had glowing hands and they could not have them. There where rants and raves, very similar to this thread. Players demanding that glowing hands should be sold in the cash shop, etc.

When GW2 came out, the GW1 vets where given rewards for their loyalty which consisted of titles, pets and skins. The new players to GW2 complained that it was not fair that we got the special skins and pets, and they should be available from the gem shop for all, etc, etc.

Now anet decides to be nice to their old players and give them 500 points as a token of gratitude to their many years of playing their games. New GW2 players are complaining it’s not fair, etc, etc, etc. (Think Yul Brynner there)

THIS is why I am tired of it. When will it end? We have been dealing with the same complaints for going on 8 years now. Basically the same complaints, just different players. The GW1 vets have had to put up with our beloved game that we have been waiting for years to play, being converted to some twisted WoW clone to keep the new players happy. Nothing keeps them happy, nothing stops them from complaining.

lol when the Hall of Monuments came out, we had no idea what it would do in GW2. People did it for fun. It wasn’t till long after that the connection was announced, and even then there was no clear picture of how it would work in GW2.

So there’s nothing greedy about it. People did it for fun.

Even so, absolutely anyone could have played GW back then and filled their hall. Absolutely anyone can do so, today too.

I know it’s one hell of a time commitment. Those who did it, earned it and frankly, much more. Months/years for 500AP and some skins? Seriously. Nobody has a thing to complain about here. Frankly, it’s about kittening time that ArenaNet did something nice for the old GW crowd…lately I’ve been thinking that they’ve sold out to the kids from those other MMO’s.

Sure, but there sure needs to be a compelling reason to define it as “more than intended”.

If it was more then intended, then Arena net will correct the issue. And this is between the receivers and Arenanet, not between others that have decided to push down this arbitrary moral judgement upon others in which they have no business in deciding.

Personally i think these should not reward any AP at all, (just titles + perks) as i feel i shouldn’t be forced to play GW1 to remain highscore competitive on GW2.

If Anet gave every care..pve players 10000000 achievement points it wouldn’t matter one little bit. The only difference would be the damage to an unskilled players ego. They lack the skill to play in truly competitive forms of the game, so they must rely on some second rate “competition” that isn’t even based on personal skill.
