No judgement here… I’ve had similar thoughts for my alts

For WvW I know some people make alt charrs for frontline and asura for backline/focus party.

I’ve currently got 16 characters, 2 of each Profession, for the sole purpose of having 1 with Elite Specialization and the other without. I have at least 2 of each Race, with the exception of Charr. I have no Charr. I just can’t into Charr for some reason.

Generally, I gear one for Dungeon Meta and the other for Thematics or sometimes WvW meta. Saves me bagspace and nurtures my altaholism something stupidly.

I have alts of the same class because changing builds is awful. You need large amounts of gems to make the neccessary bag slots to carry all the gear, large amounts of gold to actually fill them with bags, gold for all of the gear, especially the very expensive and unswappable runes and sigils, and then even after all of that, you have to sit and adjust traits and skills every time you change builds…

I only run one character with mutliple builds and that is my Ele. Everything else sits in a static build and if I need another build, I make an alt instead. I’ve found it to be a much more rewarding use of my gems and gold.

Larx! Now I know the truth and I judge you… kidding. I do the same but on a more troubling scale.

I have two Necros. One of them was my first character, a Sylvari, that I use as a Powermancer type build. The other is a Human with a Vampiric build type.

I treat them as different personalities as I do with all of my characters. I don’t have too many, but they are all individuals. I don’t role play per se, but I feel it is important to distinguish each character as independent personalities with preferences and views that separate them from one another.

I have 15 characters in 7 classes perfectly imbalanced and with particualer priority made.

I have 3 warriors
1 Fem Norn (O/W/T) for Dungeons, GS & A/M ASC Zerk Strength
1 Fem Charr (T)for WvW, shout heal (hammer) Zealot or Soldiers Trooper
1 Fem Norn (O/A/W/T) for FUN Hybrid (PvE/WvW roaming) S/S & LB ASC Sinister/Rabid with strength

I have 3 rangers
1 Fem Sylv (O/W/T) for Fractals, zerk scholar LB & S/WH or GS
1 Fem Norn (T) for WvW Roaming, sinister/krait SB/ A+?
1 Fem Charr for Experiments, Whatever I want to try with whatever I can think of

I have 3 necro’s
1 Fem Hum (W/T) for PvE DPS/PvE sinister/aristocrat (terror) hybrid or Zerk/Scholar DS DPS
1 Male Charr (O/A/W/T) for WvW ASC zealot/clerics/zerk support necro.
1 Fem Sylv (T)for WvW roaming Rabid/undead terrormancer

I have 2 ele’s
1 Fem Hum (O/A/W/T) for PvE/Dungeons ASC Zerk/Scholar or Zerk/Divinity or Celestial/Divinity (perfect group/ bad group / all zerk noobs…)
1 Fem Hum (A/W) for FUN Zealot/ Monk Healer It can heal 1000 hp on auto….from 1200 range

I have 2 guardians
1 Fem Hum (W/T) for PvE/Dungeons Zerk/Strength (S/F & GS) or Zealot/Hoelbrak (M/F/Stf/Hmr)
1 Male Sylv (O/W/T) for WvW Nomads&Clerics/Trooper (Staff Mace/Shld)

I have 1 thief
1 Fem Sylv(O/A/W/T) for FUN -no defined build-

I have 1 Mesmer
1 Fem Sylv (*/W/T) for all purposes: Sc/T& Sc/P or Stf Sinister/Perplexity or Rabid/Perplexity

I’m still working on other plans, I have 17 character slots

Race, themes, even build differences (if I’m going to have to buy multiple sets of armour, why have them taking up bag space) – there’s plenty of reasons. Hell, even roleplay could work.

WvW and PvE

my GL has ..4 necros last I heard. There was one for WvW, one for PvE, one for sPvP and I can’t remember what the last one was for.

I myself have so many alts (check the signature) because I love dressing up characters. Every character has a different personality (in my mind, I don’t tend to RP much), and I like reflecting that in the gear they wear.

That and I can do multiple runs of the same rich ore nodes/lemongrass area within a day. 10 ore x 40 characters = 400 ore per day from a rich node.

I used to have them all parked at the end chest for Not So Secret for the Blade Shards, but now all I need are fractal relics to complete all three – that’s right all three – coloured versions. Took me about 2 months.

I’ve got one of each profession…. and doubles of warrior guardian and mesmer.

Aside from the obvious advantages of being able to character swap to swap PvP builds extremely quickly…. I do have my reasons.

I have two warriors, primarily because I created frostfang and my existing warrior at the time was fire-themed…… so I created an ice-themed one to use the axe.

After a while each warrior has adapted different playstyles… one warrior has a super-leet pro dungeon speedclear setup…. and the other is for general pve fun and pug dungeons and fotm.

Both warriors are charr, and i must say “charr warrior master race.”

Two guardians… because my first guardian was a strong independent norn who didn’t take any guff from anybody….. and ran in full PvT gear. While PvT gear really is a joke in my opinion (you really fall short in the damage department) I literally could not be killed by anything either…. and I just could not shake wanting to be a full-support class, when faced with the zerker meta.

I created a secondary Guardian to be full berzerker, and because I wanted a human guardian, and I still enjoyed playing guardian and wanted to actually contribute to the team effort in dungeons and fotm.

…and now that there are nomad’s stats I aspire to have a full ascended nomad’s set on my norn guardian…. just to see if I can push this “there is no trinity” thing to its limit.

I do find the full nomad guardian useful/fun in some aspects…. I can literally solo the HotW path1 dungeon…. it just takes ages. (and this is without a completed nomad’s set)

…then we get to my two mesmers…. at the time mesmers had a place on every team “Timewarp OP” so I figured if I was going to continue making doubles of professions that mesmer was going to be the one to choose. What a mistake…. I don’t play on either of my mesmers any more…. having two is completely pointless.

Nobody even wants them on the team.

…..ele will be next…. but I think I’ll hold off on making another double till after I make a Revenant.

Because there is that one class i enjoy the most, but once i’m done with map completion, story mode dungeons, etc…. then i might want to redo these. Get a sense of progress. Basically relive the experience.

I have 14 characters. Duplicates are Guardian (3), Ranger (2), Elementalist (2), Mesmer (2) and Warrior (2). Mostly because I am bored with the game.

I have two engi’s, and multiple reasons for so.

First off, simply, different characters.
The first engi was my main from the start, is still my PvE main, and i’m very fond of this character. He does all the living story, too, and playing as him i feel immersed in the living world.
I’m also an RP-er, and my second engi functions as a rifle/pistol wielding medium armour alt for my main RP character.

Secondly, builds. I PvE engi, i WvW engi, and i have many different builds for Engi that i dont all want to stack on one and the same. My second engi, i’m currently still leveling, but will likely be more condi-oriented while my first engi is power-oriented.

Got all classes twice except for necro, which I will likely create one of these days once the specialization has been announced.

I keep telling myself that it’s for different builds or play-styles, but it’s really more about the race and wardrobe. Definitely about the wardrobe…

Simple answer to the Op: because there is nothing better to do – I have a pile of 80’s, and it’s mainly so I can play a different build without having to reset all traits, attributes, etc as GW2 lacks one thing above all else:

build templates.

Existed in GW1, and made life easy, especially as you could link and share them, instead of changing a good build to try something else, playing another toon for a few weeks, and trying to find the scrap of paper you wrote down the triat lines on…

Because, when I make a build that is the build. I don’t understand the concept of swapping out bits and pieces to make a completely different character. My character is my character, if I want a different character I’ll make that one separately.

19 chars with 18 world completes, two or more of each class I just like leveling characters.

My first character was a Sylvari Mesmer… I later made a second Mesmer because I wanted a Char Mesmer named Arlee The Purdy. So basically for a name that amused me
