Can we make mentor harder to get?
Such a stupid freaking system. in 30 days you’re going to see like 20 mentor tags in any map. There is no justfied reason to make this new free tag better than the original tag and so easy to get.
How about an option to disable them showing up on your map?
Limit the number that can be active at a time per map – probably 3 or 4. People should be able to vote them down if other people want to take over. Complicated system, but an incredibly simple system like this isn’t doing any good at all.
Polyscia – Elementalist

I doubt most people will show the mentor tag after the first shiny has worn off. Not unless they actually want to act as a mentor. Since its level one there is no rarity, no prestige attached to it. Wearing it to show off would be like walking around with the Jenna or dragon minipet and expecting anyone to be impressed. In fact, that’s probably why it’s level one. So easy to get that trying to show off with it will be laughed at.
ANet may give it to you.
I don’t think making it harder to get will help at all. Even if they pushed the tag to the last line of the mastery in time everyone would get it because most of the game content people still want to play is in Tyria anyways.
If there are issues with these tags or will be in the future they need to look for a better solution.

I’m thinking this too. I mean the tag won’t mean anything beyond having reached level 80, and you’ll ideally be getting newbies whispering you for help. The only place where I can see people trying to flaunt them is in cities.

That won’t help.

30 days? It takes 3 hours to get it. More like in a week.
30 days? If only. These things are already flooding the maps. There were at LEAST a dozen idiots running around around the Claw of Jormag fight I was at earlier. When people asked them to stop, the responses ranged from “no” to “screw you,” and several more people turned on their mentor tag at that point to intentionally troll. The minimap ended up completely useless for a while; you couldn’t even see downed players because they were blotted out by all the useless tags.
I’m extra disappointed because I’ve always honestly been really impressed with how responsibly the commander tags get used overall — there are surely a few losers out there that abuse them, but the vast majority of people I’ve encountered using them were being genuinely thoughtful about how they used them, and genuinely trying to help other players. So far, I’ve seen ONE person using a mentor tag productively, while dozens have been running around with their tag up for no reason or for malicious reasons.
I not going to be the jerk that says “take mentor tags away from everyone” (even though honestly, that’s what I’d prefer — it seems to be bringing out the worst in people,) but at least we need an option to disable them on our own map and nameplates.
Honestly i can definetly understand the abuse, personally I enjoy the mentor tag solely cause if im the only one on the map using it, it kinda makes me stand out (map chat title is lovely). Really helped when I was organizing a Verdant Brink map for the day/night cycles.
Thankfully it seems people in Cursed Shore and Verdant Brink are far more mature than those elsewhere in the map from my experience. If theirs already a mentor on the map i either shut mine off or use my CM tag to organize events elsewhere.
Didn’t this exact issue get raised when mentor tags were first announced?
Wasn’t the official response that there would be mechanisms to report people for abusing mentor tags?
Has anyone tried right-clicking the tag and seeing if there’s a report option?

You may be referring to a post that I had made a couple of months ago that was similar to this subject. I do recall that they had said in the POI there would be ways to report abuse of the system but not sure If they have come good on that tho.

Ah, yes, that’s the one, also from the announcement.
The mentor tag is distinct from a commander tag as it doesn’t cost gold, doesn’t work in World vs. World, and doesn’t allow for the formation of squads. While it’s possible that players could toggle mentoring mode on in order to grief others, Josh said that the key to making the Guild Wars 2 community healthier is to continue to provide tools for altruistic, helpful players as well as a robust reporting system for deterring malicious ones.

Not a solution. Stop sugarcoating.
This is getting worse. Mentor-tag trolling/spamming is happening at probably 1 in 5 world boss fights now; if anyone asks the trolls to stop, it doubles the number of people doing it and then they generally start flooding chat to boot. In the boss fight I just completed, a group of idiots with their tags on decided to troll someone who’d asked them to turn them off by following her around and just surrounding her character wherever she stood during the fight; blocking them is useless and, of course, there’s no appropriate way to report it. This kitten needs to stop.
Anybody remember the days when they anounce that Commander will be available
only for a limited time for 100g .. and then cost 300g ?
Can’t see that it is worse actually then in those days.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
People have been making the exact same complaints about commander tags for years, ever since 100g (the old price for them) stopped being seen as something only an entire guild working together could ever get, which was about a month after the game came out.
I agree with this:

Once it stops being an exciting new thing to try out there will be absolutely no incentive to use a mentor tag unless you’re actually trying to help people because no one will care that you’ve got it unless you’re doing something useful with it.
Which, for what it’s worth, has been my experience already. Admittedly I’ve not been doing world bosses which seems to be where people have had issues but I’ve seen mentor tags used appropriately in Silverwastes and the Mad King’s Labyrinth, and even on open world maps to show where events are happening.
Personally I think it’s a good idea to have an icon anyone can use (or rather anyone level 80 and above who has purchased HoT) rather than only those willing to shell out 300g for the “privilege” of being a sign post.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Yes, I think we will see them used less once the novelty wears off. Or not. There is precedent for both so I am surprised anet did not plan for worst-case in advance somehow.
I don’t understand why people attach prestige to any of these things. I don’t think highly of any player DUE to their tags, nor care for them.
That said, I plan to use the Mentor one when I am doing a map and want to actually help others, which is something I enjoy doing. I won’t attach any prestigious value to that, and thank ANet for giving bith old and new players this option.
I know ANet tends to listen “too much” to players, but hopefully they ignore the, IMO, unfounded criticism of the mentor tag-anyone using it inappropriately will just be mocking/fooling himself/herself.
you don’t see everyone with tags put it up for no reason.
I have a tag both commander and mentor i don’t use them.
players don’t use tag to show off how pro they are they use it to gather people.
Also squads are there for a reason.
You could always make them realize what it means to be a Mentor.
Ask them questions, lots of questions. If they’re tagged up as a Mentor it’s not like they can claim you’re harassing them if you ask legitimate, related questions to the content in the zone you’re in.
That said, who even cares if they Mentor up? I only ever follow people with true Commander tags, especially if the commander has Skittles.
This is basically the same thing that happened when people bought up the commander tag. A ton of tags all over the place, rendering the tag useless. Then over time, people stopped using them and it all settled down to the point that the only people using them, were the ones who knew how to use them.
This is the same thing. Give it time guys. It’s a new shiny toy to play with, just like with the commander tag. Just have to have patience and wait for the shine to fade. This same thing happened before, and just like before, it will calm down and then people will stop using them except for the ones who actually know how to use it.

Interestingly, if everyone overuses mentor tags just because they can then the people actually doing any mentoring will go back to what they originally did. That is, using commander tags to mentor so they stand out. Which would sort of defeat the purpose of having mentor tags in the game.
I am hoping the use of them does die down. There is a lot of precedent for it but it is not a given.
give it time the issue will go away on its own, remember the days when multi colored commander tags first became a thing? also note how it is nowhere near as bad as it was then?
At this point, people are probably spamming the mentor tags just because they know it annoys the people with commander tags.
There’s nothing new under the sun.
Option: Disable Commander Tags
Hide Commander Tags
Remove PvE Commander Tags
Too many Commander icons
(And too many more to list)
We survived the onset of brand new Commander tags. I think we’ll survive the Mentor tags. It’s new. It’s shiny. And people are showing off their new toy. Just like the Commander tags back then.
ANet may give it to you.
People will get bored of showing these things soon enough.
this topic again ? I swear man there’s less salt in the ocean . The more i see this topic the more i want to show my mentor tag just to spite people .
Soooo i was in the lab trying for my last 20 slot bag from farming ToT bags, no tag icon on the mini map.
People in the lobby before entering the actual map, so i popped my Mentor ‘apple’ on, everyone was happly following my lead for about an hour.
Then suddenly a blue tag appeared, people already following me in the map got confused as to who to follow, so turned off the ‘apple’, and everyone carried on…..blue tag did a couple of circuits (10mins), then said i could carry on mentoring, how very nice of him/her.
Sry i dont really see myself using this again ever, as people will just get confused at the end of the day, but will carry on training in it, i mean autoloot – who wouldnt want that !!
The tag is new, in a month almost no one have their out I bet.

Not a solution. Stop sugarcoating.
So, let’s see…
I point out this issue was raised even before the launch. Fact.
I point out that ANet said they’d prevent abuse. Fact.
I ask if anyone has tested to see if they can actually report abuse. Not claiming this is a solution, simply asking if anyone actually tried. I’m curious if ANet did include such a mechanism, I’m not going to blindly assume they didn’t because I didn’t have any apples to test it on at the time of posting, so I asked a question
Are you really that salty over the issue that you’d call anything that isn’t parroting your opinion “sugarcoating”?
(edited by Pandaman.4758)
I had planned to use the Mentor tag and have it up as I clear maps on my Rev so people can whisper me if they needed any help/info. The apple icon above my head is so distracting I turned it off after 5 mins lol.
So I think once the novelty wears off a bit, more and more people will get sick of the apple above their heads as well and just turn it off. Also if they do get a lot of whispers, and if they are not using the tag for the purpose of actually helping people that will be another reason to turn it off.
The mentor tag should only be visible to everyone in a city. As soon as you are in a world zone only the people in the mentors group should see it.
This will allow mentors to recruit new folks in cities, and then lead them around like sheep in real zones, without griefing the commander tag folks..
Can we also get Commander tags disabled also? Many of them only bought it because it was a 100 gold status symbol, are rude and don’t know what they are doing.
Or was this something that the passage of time fixed all by itself? Just like the passage of time will fix the mentor tag and people using it who don’t need to.

I assume those people are not even playing the game anymore. Yes, you may say that time fixed it, but do you really suggest waiting for it to be gone? Like… all those bugs, server/client crashes and now this? Dispite how much I loved the expansion in general – I might choose not to play for a while, then.

People acting like people and bugs are not the same issue. Bugs should be fixed as soon as possible. People flashing their shiny new toy can be ignored because time will fix it. All that’s needed is for the shine to wear off. Exactly like commander tags. (And no, neither you nor I know if they stayed or left but it’s unlikely they left at a rate different than any other group, so they are still around. They just don’t bother to flash the tag, because it’s no longer shiny and no longer prestigious).
I was reading and posting on the forum back when commander tags were new. Thread after thread after thread complaining about too many tags and rude commanders and commanders who didn’t know what they were doing and so on. Where are all these threads now? They don’t show up like they did because time fixed the problem.
Patience, young Padawan. Tincture of time heals many things.
ANet may give it to you.
I’m pretty sure that this will die down just as what happened with the commander tag change. Soon commanders will get more tools for their squads which should also help alot for the new world bosses. You’d be able to assign groups of people yourself to tasks since they will be visible in groups.
So the only thing of note is that he was wearing the mentor tag? What if he had done exactly the same thing and said exactly the same words but wasn’t wearing the tag? Would you have bothered to post that chat, or would it have been just a person being rude and inconsiderate? Tags don’t change a person’s personality and are irrelevant to the situation being discussed other than it made him more visible and you thought him having a tag made it noteworthy to screenshot what he said.

So the only thing of note is that he was wearing the mentor tag?
Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying, because I think that a person like this is not worthy to call himself a mentor and right now the game gives him this option for doing nothing.
Situations like this have happened several times, but in this case I took a screenshot just because I felt bad for those many people who died and were blamed for being bad players during an event that should be fun and, you know, bring joy.
I also feel like mentor is way to easy to get. Its a bit unfair to give the tag almost for free, since proper tag costs 300 gold.

This is what I agree with as well. Everyone can not use their tags properly and be a jerk. It doesn’t matter if you completed a mastery for it, completed a series of masteries for it, paid 300g for it, or have total map completion for it. There is always the option to abuse it. Therefore, I do not believe that upgrading the requirements for it are the way to go.
This is my solution
1. Make it so individual players can turn on or off their tags like it is now. If you don’t want to mentor and ask questions, you can turn it off.
2. Make it so individuals can turn off all mentor tags they see. If you don’t need to be mentored yourself, you don’t have to see the tags. This is useful because I am always willing to ask questions for other players and help them out. A tag or something would be nice to let others know I am willing to do this. However, I also don’t want to see the tag over my head and don’t want to see others tags. I also don’t want people who don’t want to be mentored seeing the tags. I don’t want them to be confused and think there is an event where I am at. I only want a way to let others know that I am willing to ask questions and help them out
3. You should be able to make it so you can’t see individual commander tags. Like a right click option to disable being able to see it. There have been many times I have ran to a commander tag only to see they are roaming around on their own killing random creatures, probably tagging up only to make the killing process go faster.

See any resemblances?
This whole thing is a fad. Like all fads, they show up. Hang around awhile. Then are replaced by the next new fad. Mad Memoirs. Karka shell backpack. The two holographic wings. The Halo/Devil Horns. Even the new white or black wings. All fads and people flashed them because they were new. They they got tired of them and that was it for them. It’s not worth wasting time worrying about the current fad in game.
It’s a fad. Give it enough time and I can message this post to you and ask you where all the mentor tags are.
ANet may give it to you.

I don’t have a problem with mentors. I treat them exactly the same way that I treat commanders – self-appointed numpties who have never demonstrated any reason why I should pay the slightest attention to a single word they say.
There are, of course, exceptions. But they’re names that I recognise & have a reason to respect. As long as there is a system whereby people can spend time or money just to “win” an icon, I will treat that icon with the contempt that it deserves.
It’s a game. I’ll play the game the way that I want to. If someone wants to try to order me around, they’ll get a very short answer. Whether they’re tagged as a commander, mentor, or no tag at all.
That said, I plan to use the Mentor one when I am doing a map and want to actually help others, which is something I enjoy doing. I won’t attach any prestigious value to that, and thank ANet for giving bith old and new players this option.

This, 100%. I only put up my tag when in lower level maps, and already I’ve had people ask me several questions because they saw my tag. I enjoy being helpful, and I think this tag is a great mechanism for that.
Yes, there will occasionally be some abuse, but I haven’t seen any cases of it yet. I also haven’t seen anything that leads me to believe that it will be any worse than commander tag abuse that happens every so often.

Pretty much this, yes. Doesnt help that most of the people that are upset about it are only upset because they spent money.
I remember the Commander tag spamming that went on, it was very annoying, much like this is, but it will be fixed like the other, with time.
Being a mentor should require knowing the content.
To show a mentor tag in a map, the account should have done anything that can be done in that map:
- 100% map completion.
- Revealed all areas.
- Completed all puzzles and mini-dungeons.
- Completed story and all paths of any dungeon entered from that area.
- Done all diving goggles.
- Defeated all world bosses and meta-events with a related acheivement in that area.
This from Lornar’s Pass:
some guy all worked up in mapchat “stupid anet, I got 635,000/635,000 xp in Pact commander line and it isn’t giving me reward”
Me and a couple of others: “you need to click on the lower right and apply the mastery point”
guy: “oh, TY, lol”
get a whisper in about 45 seconds: “How do I turn on mentor tag?”
ignore. 10 seconds later: “nvm, found it”
…and he’s running around with the tag on, ready to “help” others despite not having a clue.
Aw man, are we still on this?
Lots of folks got free tags.
Some will use them for good.
Some will use them for evil.
Some don’t know how to turn them on and off.
Some have not even realised that they got them.
If a few surplus tags on a map totally destroys your open world PvE gameplay then… <insert your own words here>.
We could, you know, just move on.
How about an option to disable them showing up on your map?
