Nowhere do they have in plain english “Dyes you have already unlocked on one character will become account bound”

It’s on the video https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-wardrobe-system/ in very plain english: Dyes are now account bound, each of the dyes you’ve collected on your characters is now available for use

See now they need to put that actual writing onto the friggin site here.

I’m going to bookmark this page just incase this is not the case on april 15th and WOOPS gotta unlock the dyes at least one more time. Because he doesn’t say those that you gotten will retroactively become account bound.

Might want to take a peek at my comment up there as it is a direct quote of text written on this site in the Support section’s Knowledge Base.

I, too, had concerns over the wording on the dye blog page yesterday and also because the video talking about the dye changes was at the very end of the wardrobe video on the wardrobe page so I had missed it. The Knowledge Base was pointed out to me, so I was pointing it out to you for this same reason.

“Each dye that one of your characters currently has unlocked will become available to every character on your account when you log in with that character.”

They’ll jump at the beginning but given a few days or weeks as there’s less demand for dyes, they’ll go down.

If you have cheap colors, use them, medium expensive ones, sell them, they will fall, and very rare and expensive ones will go up like a helium filled asura, so keep them.

You can get dyes from tradin post, from chef (making him finally more attractive again), from the laurels trader and from the mystic forge in pvp (i guess).

As dyes are being removed from loot, what about getting dyes from harvesting? Will that also be removed?

Account wide dyes were something quite a lot of players have been asking for since beta, I’m glad it is happening.

Thanks.

I guess my point was: I believe that removing unidentified dyes will vastly decrease the supply of dyes available, increase the effort of acquiring new dyes and all because dyes are becoming account-bound.

I could be wrong, but the decrease in supply should be vastly outweighing the decrease in demand from account-bound dyes and since both demand and supply will be going down, the end-result would be an increase in price and a decrease in quantity available. (Help me John Smith!)

This wardrobe and dye change was supposed to make things better, but I see it making things worse in terms of dye acquisition.

I think we can expect dyes to settle back down to lower prices overall, with blue dyes hovering at the same price as unidentified dyes until patch day. The reason is that every dye can effectively be turned into an unidentified dye on patch day, meaning that is now the minimum value for a dye. However after patch day you will see a massive plummet of the prices of all dyes. The reason for this is two fold.

Thousands upon thousands of players converted all their laurels into dyes yesturday to try and make money. Most of them didn’t… this means they have a crap ton of unidentified dyes and the only way to make money is to open them up and gamble right now. This means there is going to be a huge influx of dyes into the market.

Secondly on patch day an even larger influx of dyes will take place from duplicates being converted into unidentified dyes. I know personally I will be receiving 300 unidentified dyes. Assuming the unidentified dyes aren’t account bound, the price for them will bottom out rather quickly, and then slowly rebound.

Due to the sheer volume of extra dyes entering the market I don’t think we will see a significant price increase for any dyes for at least 6 months if not more.

You have to see the upsides. Especially for the chief. It’s an almost death profession you can learn. I really never used it. Many event buffoods cost 10% as much and are 80% as effective as the self made stuff. However discovering colors for yourself via chief will become lucrative again.

Also it’s not that big deal, I guess colors will increase for the release of the patch, then all the common colors are gonna drop again. The rare onces will be expensive as they are now and the ultra rare ones will increase to eternity.

High end dye prices are already dropping probably because people are opening unidentified dyes. Not sure if prices will take 6 months to recover though. Eventually all dye prices will return to normal or slightly more expensive than normal prices.

No, I think Shadow Blade is asking for some level of consistency in design philosophy. I think that’s a simple request.

That is exactly what i’m asking for, i think its absurd that we have core selling features of the game being removed or completely changed with no real feedback being taken. or explanations given.

There is an order to taking feedback and acting on it, generally you do this at a stage BEFORE the work is finalized and it can still make a difference not:

‘oh hay guys were completely changing this game feature in a few days /weeks hope your as excited as we are, not excited? your not a dedicated player then…’

look at the CDI threads, they are constantly asked what their long term design/ plans are so we can comment and give feedback at an early stage when it can make a difference and are told they wont talk about that, infact if you look the majority of the responses are comments on player comments and not thoughts on design or direction, just non committal responses lacking substance, at this point the cdi just looks like a PR spin exercise, and i seriously doubt anything of substance will come of it

In the last year progression in almost every area of the game has had at least one reset. In many cases with no compensation to the possible hundreds of hours players dedicated to it, in some cases changes have gone out as little as a few weeks after new releases. in cases such as these they quite obviously should have changed them before releasing them or put off releasing them to minimize disruption to players, but they didn’t so they could meet their deadline of new stuff every 2 weeks, even when they have taken longer to add polish etc its been a buggy mess as seen by the end of the living world season.

there is a fundamental disconnect between what they are saying and what they are doing.

“no grind, play the way you want”
grind everything, play what we tell you how we tell you when we tell you

Did you demand Valve give you your money back for TF2 when they made it free to play? I love the way many people on this forum get bent out of shape when something doesnt go 100% their way but when you benefit from a change, like the new wardrobe with a legendary, people are AMAZINGLY ok with it.

Your TF2 example is a bad one, most likely purposefully so. all they did was make it free, they didn’t fundamentally change it, if i had bought TF2 and they patched it to portal, then yes i would have demanded valve give me my money back.

In regards to legendaries, maybe you should look around a bit there are many people upset that people who made one legendary get to dual wield them like people who made two for that purpose with half the effort.

WoW made leveling to 90 + full gear-set buyable.

I’m actually a believer that the dye market NEEDS to crash a bit.. like by 50%.. Keeping dyes as drops would accomplish this. I mean you can already see how bad unidentified dyes are exploding.

I also enjoy when dyes drop too. It’s super fun even when you get a lame color lol. Maybe keep them as drops but slightly adjust the drop rate so the combination of dyes still dropping plus the fact that people don’t need to buy multiples, might drive prices down from where they were (Unid dye was around 35s before this announcement.. anyone remember when they were 11s a piece?).

Nobody in the world needs to keep Abyss dye at 40-50 gold… Nobody… lol.

Dyes will drop in price again anyhow. Check the term economy and you will surely find some articles about it (this isn’t sarcasm). Prices will go up and down sometime soon though they won’t be as cheap as before.

But what I’m saying is even if they go back to where they were a month/2 months ago it’s still pretty crazy. A few months ago (don’t remember exactly but I think like 6 or more months) rare dyes were abt 20s low end, now the low end is like 40-50. I’m not convinced simply making people not require duplicates will have as much of an effect as people think.

I’m just tired of the whole “amg black and white dyez R da bezt I need BILLIONS of gold for it!”.. Seriously, in every MMO that has black and white dye, they are always a billion(exaggeration) gold.

The world could stand that at least rare dye prices (and a couple masterwork here and there) be cut by 50%. Maybe they will simply with the account bound change, but then again… I didn’t expect unidentified dyes to go UP in price either but since they won’t drop anymore I would think that would serve to lower the dye supply across the board and essentially normalize the supply vs demand to be basically what it is now.. I suppose we won’t know until the change lands though.

Then there’s still the simple part about how finding unidentified dyes as drops is fun and I would be disappointed to not find any more.

LOL so many deluded fools in this thread think they’re going to strike big come patch day XD

Apparently there cant see the mark for buying dye has been slashed in half if not more. Just going to think up an example of the top of my head say you have 4 characters on your account which i think is a fare average to base off of.

So taking that into amount and let’s do the maths here they get a unid dye for each copy of the same dye they have on the other 3 characters out of the 4 that is 3x the unid dye for every copy they have on their character. let’s not forget that some players have 8 characters so that 7×.

so 4 characters with let’s say 40 dyes unlocked each, that would work out at 120 unid dyes just popping into existence correct? Now let look at how many people are in game let’s say 2million players maybe more, maybe less.

Ok what is
120 unid dyes x 2 million player = a metric kitten tone of dyes

Which is a dam site more than the market could ever shift e.g. “flooding the market lowing there price!”

We are talking 10s of millions of dye been added to the mark from just the dye crated from fin air not even taken into account the shear amount of unid dyes that have been stock pile or are on the tp as we speak if you add them all up the mind boggles at the amount of dyes that will be available on patch day.

I’ve said it once and i will say it again until you learn it. These dyes will be worthless or at best there price will bottom out back to there original TP price.

Unless everyone in game stock pile every dye they get for years you will see no profit from this.

“drop in price” or “stabilize at the new equilibrium?”. Because the second is true, but the first… if the supply will decrease as badly as it seems it will, then no, the new equilibrium will likely end up being higher than even the post-announcement prices.

1. i sincerely doubt that there are 2 million active accounts nowadays.
2. most of those will not have alts at all
3. lot of those with alts will not have much dyes across them total, much less duplicates
(ad 2, 3 – just look at the AP breakdown on leaderboards to understand how bad the average player activity is)
4. Most probably majority of the generated unid dyes will be thansformed to identified ones on the spot (again, people that remember to sell things on tp are a minority on this game).

No, you will not get millions of new unid dyes. And what you get will be devoured by the market very fast. After which the situation will return to the new norm – slightly reduced demand, way lower supply.

So let me get this straight. When GW2 first released, we had account bound dyes. Then this happened (quote from Crystin Cox):

There was a time when the dye system was very different and at that time dye unlocks were account based, but we have since changed the dyes system and we really feel that character based is the right way to go and the system we have now is the best one for the game.
Customized dye should be something that denotes your characters progress, like better looking, more elaborate gear. As you spend more time on your character, they grow and gain access to more customization options. If we make dyes account based, this progression will only happen on one character. We wanted character customization to remain tied to the character but we felt that one-time-use dyes discouraged players from customizing as often as they would like, that is how we arrived at the current system.
There are 400 dyes in the game, we do not think of dyes as something that a character should unlock all of, it is not meant to be a collection feature. Each character should have a unique palette and we have made enough colors to make this possible. Dyes come from world drops, rewards, crafting, the Mystic Forge, and the Gem Store and we expect that over the life of a character you will collect a lot of them.
We are still developing and the dye system will continue to receive attention and improvements, but changing it to an account based system is not something we are considering right now.

Now we are going back to account bound dyes again? Seriously, why did we even switch to character bound dyes any ways in the first place? It should of been account bound and stayed account bound from the start. Glad it is finally going back to account bound, but this is a change that should of never happened as they should of never been character bound in the first place.

Do we know if there is a chance for duplicate dyes again after this change? For example, say I have two avvies right now who have both unlocked the color “Unexciting Brown”. On patch day, one of those will get reverted to “unidentified”. Is there a chance that that un-id’ed dye could be Unexciting Brown again? Or am I guarenteed to get a new color every time I open an un-id’ed dye from here on out?

i’m assuming unid’ed dyes after the patch will pull from the same pool of colors regardless of what you have unlocked, so yes you could get “unexciting brown” again. your options will then be to sell it on the TP or recycle it in mystic forge toilet.

(This and several of the replies after it were originally a separate thread I made to deal with a specific issue in the new dye system, but has since been merged to this thread)

So ANet is making dyes account wide unlocks. That’s seriously awesome, and I love it. Can’t wait.

One problem: some of us have already purchased the same dye for multiple characters. ANet is acknowledging us by giving one unidentified dye per duplicate unlocked dye. So that’s cool.

Except…it really isn’t. There are HUGE price differences between dyes, and ANet seems to be saying that the “reimbursement” for our multiple unlocks will be the same regardless of WHICH dyes we have multiple unlocks on.

I spent in the neighborhood of 70 gold to unlock Abyss on two different characters, and all I will get for that is a single unidentified dye, currently worth less than a single gold, which is the same thing I will get for having some crappy 50-copper dye unlocked on two or more characters?

ANet, please give us an item-version of the SAME dye we have multiple unlocks for so that we can sell it on the TP. This only seems fair. I paid a lot for abyss, so I want to get an item version OF abyss, not a random unidentified dye.

There are actually two markets we are dealing with: UNID market, and actual colored dye market.

UNIDs won’t be dropping anymore, so I could see people thinking, “omg I will save all of these and the demand will skyrocket and their price will skyrocket!” Problem is, like grayskull says, there will be TONS of people dumping their UNIDs.

Your best bet will be the specific colors market, because there will be a new customer, the completionists who absolutely must have all of the colors unlocked. Overall I anticipate prices for individual colored dyes to stay well above what they were prior to this announcement, but nowhere near what some of them are selling for now.

I’m thinking more money will be lost than gained after this patch lol.

I’ve just done a count of the duplicate dyes I have on four characters, the result is I should get at least 184 unid dyes. I’m just one player so when you consider the size of the player base the number of unid dyes being available will soar.

The new equilibrium price will be higher than the old equilibrium price. This benefits suppliers, like the chef profession as you said, but suppliers benefits are far outweighed by the losses to consumers (buyers and users of dyes). Furthermore, most consumers are likely not even in the market for dyes yet, because there are likely to be many people like me who do not buy dyes on the trading post and instead get their dyes from unidentified dye drops. If these people enter the market after the patch, the price will go up even further.

If I sum the rest of other dyes I bought (black/white/random color) I have spent +1438g on dyes.

And I’m not even going to get a single unidentified dye because those dyes were used on characters I deleted.

And I’m not even mad (after knowing how much I spent I’m just screaming internally).

Firstly, the 70 gold was just an example, and that is only what I’ve spent on getting abyss for just two characters. I have other multiple-unlock dyes as well.

Secondly, 70 gold is a LOT for some players. Super-duper hardcore players who spend a ridiculous amount of time and use obscure strategies to acquire wealth might not see it as a large amount, but it is, and it takes many players a long time to acquire.

Thirdly, your lack of anger is not my concern. The fact that you are not angry does not mean I shouldn’t be. You are entitled to be as enraged or not as you like, and so am I.

Bottom line: I spent gold on something that will be rendered obsolete in the new update, and I don’t feel I (or anyone else in a similar situation) am going to be compensated fairly.

Honestly, im kittened that only dyes bought after the patch become account- bound. What about my warrior that has 200+ dyes unlocked including abyss and celestial? They managed to make karma accound bound by just logging in on all toons. why not with dyes?

Where did you read this? Seriously ALL your dyes on ALL your characters will become account bound and any duplicates will become new unidentified dyes. Seriously this thing has come up a thousand times since the announcement read the threads before posting.

Worthless dyes means more ppl can enjoy the colors at minimal cost – a winning scenario

Very expensive dyes puts a cap on the dyes you would want vs can afford – better for anet and the ppl that want to make a quick buck

Which is better for the players? You getting to enjoy your colors or making money someway or getting lucky of purchasing gems.

Eventually as time goes by prices will drop on dyes considerable but that is when the player base has all colors they want which will be a very very long time from now. Prices will sky-rocket for a few months too :s

The only thing that worries me is having to pay to re-dye. That will only create a barrier. Alot of ppl say its not going to cost anything but my fear is that changes.

With the removal of Dye’s from the random drop table will there be any change to the requirement of 250 dyes for the Gift of Color?

Yes. We just received verification from Dev that we will be reducing the amount of unidentified dyes needed to 100.

This information would have had a tremendous impact on how the dye market responded to the new dye system. This information belongs on the blog post.

The article says: “When you unlock a dye after the feature pack is released, all characters on your account will have unlimited access to that color.”

Didn’t see anything on: "already existing dyes on one character will be account bound.

Secondly, 70 gold is a LOT for some players. Super-duper hardcore players who spend a ridiculous amount of time and use obscure strategies to acquire wealth might not see it as a large amount, but it is, and it takes many players a long time to acquire.

Erm.. if you think the only way to get gold in this game is by playing the TP or hacking or farming (bad strategy actually) or using real money then you may wanna “play” the game, is very rewarding (I have never farm but a few hours and I’m not familiar with those “obscure strategies” you speak of).

And of course it take time to get gold. Or what? You think I wake up one day with +1000g and said: hey, I’m going to buy a kittenload of abyss dyes just for the lulz? It took me 1-2 weeks to get the gold for 1 pair of abyss/celestial dyes each time.

And yes, you have right to be angry but that’s not ArenaNet problem. They are know for screwing players over and over without the minimal consideration and they aren’t going to change because someone spent 70g on something that is going to be changed soon.

The is a link somewhere in this thread. Although a Dev should post a official reply here to make it clear once and for all.

And just a few lines down from that they clearly states that if you have the same dye on several characters you will get an unidentified dye for each of those.
Which suggests that all dyes currently own on all characters will be put in a account-bound pool.

I keep reading on here that Unidentified Dyes are going to stop dropping. The question I have is where did it say that? I don’t remember reading that in the article. I am confused by that. I can understand the Dye change and I completely agree with it but why would Dyes stop dropping? I can understand a decrease in drop rate a bit and even a better way to use them either by crafting or mystic forge because of the duplicates. I can can also sorta except them becoming account bound drops, even though, I would not agree with that. Mainly because of the horrible RNG rate of the Unidentified Dyes or any RNG in GW2 for that matter. Now on the other hand if I could somehow greatly increase my likelihood of getting specific Dyes then I would be ok with accountbound Dyes; Possibly even specific rare Dyes for specific events, achievements, boss kills, etc..

The TP is never a good reason for peoples complaints. Trading is helpful but that is not the core function of this game nor should it ever be. You are supposed to accomplish things in this game by playing it not the TP. The stuff you have should represent your experience and skill in playing GW2 not trading in the game. This is a wonderful update and a giant step in the correct direction. For those of us that have 8 level 80 characters we now have been put closer on par with those who just play 1 or 2. Playing multiple characters should never be a disadvantage as it has been and this is the correct way to fix it, by making everything account bound. Even though I have 8 characters I can only play 1 at a time and all the accomplishments I have made are no different than if I had made them on 1 character. I am currently very happy with the bulk of the coming changes. I hope there isn’t any unpleasant surprises. Keep it coming Anet!

It says it on the blog page.

“With dyes becoming account unlocks, the demand for dye will decrease and unidentified dyes will no longer drop as loot but will still be available from the Mystic Forge and select in-game rewards.” (from the page)

Here.
Specifically, under a paragraph named (coincidentally) Unidentified Dye Drop Rate, you can read:

With dyes becoming account unlocks, the demand for dye will decrease and unidentified dyes will no longer drop as loot but will still be available from the Mystic Forge and select in-game rewards.

Actions, not words.

I dunno. I still want dyes to drop as loot. Kind of like getting a lottery ticket and hoping for a super rare.

I’ll miss that.
