In one fell swoop Anet have got rid of one of my largest issues with the game…

Thank you and give the guys who did this a payrise…

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/

It will also negate the need for server merges due to low population and help the overflow issues in a single stroke. It’s pretty much how things should have been designed from the start but better late than never

So kittening happy at this. I hated the server system and felt it was a step backwards in tech terms from GW1. There’s still the EU/US divide to breach but this is a quantum leap from where we were.

^^ I Posted about it first, yet i was merged, such madness! ^^

This was so needed, PvE it’s going to live again!

I have no more words, this is one mega change for the better! As a PvE player, this is my favorite feature that is coming on the 15th.

hypes!

One some things ANet needs to get right is:
- Guilds. If 2 guild mates from 2 different servers enter the same map, as the system goes, it says they will be put together, if they are playing together, they should contribute influence globally to the guild, same with missions.
If the servers are going Mega-Servers, there is no sense anymore on the guild influence per-server restrictions. ^-^

This is a good change, but it’s one major thing that will cause several concerns to the community, that now, is not anymore X Server Community to… well… EU/US community.

This seems nice, but I have one concern:

How about those maps that have a long chain and areas that need a lot of work to open?

Specifically, Orr temples

And what about reset night meta event trains?

If I see Shatterer is up on BG, and I end up porting there, will I automatically be sent to a fresh, brand new map/server where Shatterer isn’t up, and I will have to go through another loading screen to go on BG?

edit: Just saw the last paragraph. There is going to be some complications from this, but it’s interesting.

I hope their announcement later this week will allow dragonite to be farmable and somehow provide a realiable source of open CoF/CoE maps.

Interesting… there are a lot of potential issues with this system, but no point in complaining about them until we have the full details. Overall though the idea is cool.

It is also one of the most elegant and clever ways I have seen what is essentially a server merge handled.

Dungeons would be more likely to be open now, considering the maps should be a lot more populated. As for world events, they’ll probably all be on static timers, like Tequatl.

This is great news. However I hope that they can expand it to the other maps relatively soon because a lot of the big events aren’t on 1-15 unless they plan on changing that which it seems like something is coming about that tomorrow.

my favorite note about megaservers:

+225% players on a single map copy. so 125 (i base this on marionette fight because i forgot the actual population limit per map copy) times 2.25 = 281 + 125 = 406 players per map copy now. sure, the number could be bigger, but 400 + players per map is awesome! TEQ and the WURM might finally be accessable to the average and / or casual player now.

And how we will make organised raids for Wurms? No overflow means no taxi to same map?

There’s also a chance it’ll stay unopened because people are lazy and want to wait for someone else to do it.

That’s not what it was saying.

It was saying that a map that previously had 8-10 people per server and seemed empty would now put all the players from different servers into the same map, so the population of that map would now be 30-40 people.

They didn’t change the cap on any of the maps.

It says it intelligently puts you with friends and guildies and people who speak your language by pulling data from your player experience. So in theory the taxi is in the background.

Get ready for 100 people waiting for the boar in Queensdale. Thought he went down fast before? You haven’t seen anything yet. I feel bad for people with lower end computers or slow internet, if every map is going to fill to the max before a new one is generated it’s going to be lag city everywhere for some people.

I believe on meta events they will likely go with separate instances like the Scarlet Boss on LA, they could win much by doing it that way to avoid problems with scaling / difficulty / overflow / cheating players just for chest and player limit control.

unlikely, that is too much work for Anet. The far far more likely solution is that they will synch the events across servers like they have already done for Teq and Wurm, so that if the event is happening in one map it is also happening in all the other maps that are created within 10 minutes of the event starting.

Guilds

  • How will this effect influence
  • How will this effect recruitment
  • How will the Guild bank be effected
  • How will this effect Guild Missions

Meta Events

  • Guild like TTS that are multi guilds, how will this effect that
  • Will we be able to pull non friends/guild member into the same map
  • Will there always be that 100+ player limit for larger/harder meta events like Teq and Wurms or will players have to sit out again if they dont wait 30minute to an hour before fight for few of being in the “Last” server.

Megaservers are about to destroy the unofficial rp server communities, at least as far as I understand them.

Why is this? Because every map is now going to be an overflow, with players scattered to the four winds with a vague weight given by their actual home.

Previously, if you went to divinity’s reach in piken square, you were going to the rp hub of the EU servers. Now every divinity’s reach is the same and while many of us will end up in the right place, a good proportion will probably find that they have no idea where they are and who the characters passing by are.

I can think of no greater destructive action towards the rp community than this, especially in that we have had to make our own way without official servers. While this is great for grouping and I welcome it, it should not apply to cities, as they are primarily social hubs and see no actual group content.

I urge the rp community to make their voice heard on this non city change, before this goes live. Otherwise it could cause irreparable damage to what little rp community there is left in GW2.

No Megaserver in city zones please.

But that will require the End of Pre-Events. Even if they don’t end, and start at the same time, how is it possible since meta-events depend of how fast people do them or if they win/fail?

I agree – and seeing the populations on some servers, merges were definitely needed.

In general, it looks promising – i have a few small doubts about the system, though.
First, while it is definitely good for smaller servers, it doesn’t solve the overflow problem for bigger and more organized ones (and it will make it harder to notice you are in what is for all practical reasons an overflow). While for a lot of servers doing big scale events will become easier, for some it may have an opposite result.
Second problem is not really a concern for me personally, but it’s quite possible that TTS-type guilds will end up having a lot more problem trying to create private event instances.
Whether those turn into major things or be almost unnoticeable will depend on specific implementation, so i guess we’ll have to wait and see.

my favorite note about megaservers:

+225% players on a single map copy. so 125 (i base this on marionette fight because i forgot the actual population limit per map copy) times 2.25 = 281 + 125 = 406 players per map copy now. sure, the number could be bigger, but 400 + players per map is awesome!

I am pretty sure they meant “+225% increase in average map population”, not raising map caps. Most marionette fights (to use your example) never reached map cap, ad some servers had to do with 10-15 people in the zone.

Actions, not words.

What if I want to play with the people from my homeserver only, though? There are a lot of people I know, who aren’t on my friendslist, who aren’t in my guild, yet have the same interests as me. Will I just have to be lucky to be put in the same world as them? Will I have to deal with people from other servers I quite literally couldn’t care less about?
I’m not trying to be the partypooper here, and I’ll wait for more updates and until I’ve seen it in action, but this could very well mean the end of roleplaying in Guild Wars 2, and thus, the end for a lot of players.

I do hope servers will remain to work as they do now; people from your server getting absolute priority to be in the same world, and I also hope cities, at least, will stay out of this. We don’t need trolls in our RP.

Edit: And I know that roleplayers make up a tiny portion of the playerbase, hence my asking instead of me stating that we’re being beeped over. Again, waiting until we get more info. It’s just the the first impression scares me.

TEQ and the WURM might finally be accessable to the average and / or casual player now.

Wrong!
These events, particularly Wurm, requires a very high level of organisation that the average and / or casual player are simple incapable of or not willing to do.

I am in a guild that specialises in doing these events on a daily basis. We go to great lengths to keep away from the casuals because 10 players not on teamspeak and not knowing what to do when will fail the event for the other 120 players.

Believe me, the megaserver change will cause these events to fail for everyone …

I’m more worried about this because you can’t choose your server anymore. I don’t mind helping with the event to open CoF or CoE but you might get stuck starting it from the beginning with only your party and no one else willing to help unless you’re lucky with your “megaserver” roll.

Even daily World Boss Tours will be hard to get on(you might get pushed to a dead “megaserver”/no one in the map wants to do the meta event you intend to do) as opposed to right now people can agree on “Lets guest to x server and do these meta events”.

We have guilds, many guilds, who are all part of the same community. This change is not about seeing a few friends, it is about seeing a whole community of people who are not joined together by party, friend or single guild links.

Both Piken Square (EU) and Tarnished Coast (NA) are almost the unoffical RP hubs of GW2. Every RP guild basically resides on these two communities and the fear now resides in the fact that suddenly we can be getting grouped with people form other servers (not just our friends and guilds)to balance out these news maps in the name of megaservers. That’s scary because as RPers we have stuck essentially to these few servers in the EU and NA in order to assure we have tight nit communities and no trolling to deal with. Now we’re looking at the very real risk of RP harassment and trolling suddenly.

I understand why ANet is making this change and I’d support it, IF capital cities were excluded.

The RP community is large, almost impossible to add every RPer and worse, new RPers wont know what’s going on. There’s tons of RP Guilds, it would fill up a whole guild to 500 peeps.

I worry as well about this idea, it could potentially kill the little RP that exists on both PS and TC. More so PS cause we’re already a smaller community than TC, but kill both it might.

I wont judge yet until it’s released, but I’ll still voice my concern depending on how it distributes people to each zone and how much it splits people from your own homeworld.

That would be the equivalent of showing up late and getting into an overflow. With the megaserver, at least you know all the other late people will also be joining you, rather than showing up on their home server.

How the megaserver matches people specifically will end up being very important and can easily make or break the system.

Well, ‘home server’ is still a factor in assigning maps, so the impact might be less than you think.
